Since ectoine is a high-value product, overviewing strategies for identifying novel microbial sources becomes relevant. In the current study, by following a genome mining approach, the ectoine biosynthetic cluster in a tropical marine strain of Nocardiopsis dassonvillei (NCIM 5124) was located and compared with related organisms. Transcriptome analysis of Control and Test samples (with 0 and 5% NaCl, respectively) was carried out to understand salt induced stress response at the molecular level. There were 4950 differentially expressed genes with 25 transcripts being significantly upregulated in Test samples. NaCl induced upregulation of the ectoine biosynthesis cluster and some other genes (stress response, chaperone/Clp protease, cytoplasm, ribonucleoprotein and protein biosynthesis). The production of ectoine as a stress response molecule was experimentally validated via LCMS analysis. The investigation sheds light on the responses exhibited by this actinomycete in coping up with salt stress and provides a foundation for understanding salt induced molecular interactions.

The overuse of colistin, the last-resort antibiotic, has led to the emergence of colistin-resistant bacteria, which is a major concern. Lactic acid bacteria which are generally regarded as safe are known to be reservoirs of antibiotic resistance that possibly pose a threat to human and animal health. Therefore, this study assessed the prevalence of colistin antimicrobial resistance in livestock in India, that is lactic acid bacteria in healthy chickens, sheep, beef, and swine of Mysore. Diverse phenotypic and genotypic colistin resistance were examined among the lactic acid bacterial species (n = 84) isolated from chicken (n = 44), sheep (n = 16), beef (n = 14), and swine (n = 10). Hi-comb, double-disk diffusion tests, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), and biofilm formation were assessed for phenotypic colistin resistance. Specific primers for colistin-resistant genes were used for the determination of genotypic colistin resistance. Around 20%, 18%, and 1% were colistin-resistant Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Pediococcus species, respectively. Among these, 66.67% exhibited MDR phenotypes, including colistin antibiotic. The identified resistant isolates are Levilactobacillus brevis LBA and LBB (2), Limosilactobacillus fermentum LBF (1), and Pediococcus acidilactici CHBI (1). The mcr-1 and mcr-3 genes were detected in Levilactobacillus brevis LBA, LBB, and Pediococcus acidilactici CHBI isolated from chicken and sheep intestines respectively. The study identified colistin resistance determinants in lactobacilli from food animals, emphasizing the need for enhanced surveillance and monitoring of resistance spread. These findings underscore colistin resistance as a significant medical concern and should be integrated into India's ongoing antimicrobial resistance monitoring programs.

Introduction Tooth sensitivity, or dentin hypersensitivity (DH), is characterized by sharp, sudden pain in response to stimuli such as cold, heat, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks. In Malaysia, there is limited understanding of the epidemiological aspects of tooth sensitivity, necessitating focused research. The condition results from the exposure of dentinal tubules transmitting stimuli to nerves within the pulp, with contributing factors including gingival recession, enamel erosion, and periodontal disease. This study aims to investigate the factors associated with tooth sensitivity among patients at the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) using advanced statistical methods. Methods This study employed a computational research design to develop an ordinal regression and bootstrap methodology using the RStudio software (Posit PBC, Boston, MA) to analyze secondary data from the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. Six variables were analyzed: tooth wear severity, patient's age, gender, smoking status, alcohol status, and type of toothbrush. The study was conducted in three phases: 1) the development of an ordinal regression model, 2) the development of algorithms for ordinal regression and bootstrap method, and 3) validation using tooth sensitivity data. Results The analysis revealed that the replication with 1000 samples provided the most precise estimates with small standard errors (SE) and consistently significant effects across variables. Tooth sensitivity was influenced by age, toothpaste type, toothbrush type, and brushing frequency. Conclusion The study highlights the importance of considering multiple variables such as age, toothpaste type, toothbrush type, and brushing frequency in understanding tooth sensitivity. The combined ordinal regression and bootstrap technique significantly improved the model's accuracy, providing valuable insights for dental health professionals. These findings underscore the need for specific guidelines on oral hygiene practices to manage and reduce the risk of tooth sensitivity.

Cardiac echinococcosis is a rare and severe manifestation of hydatid disease. It is caused by parasitic infestation by the Echinococcus species and can lead to life-threatening complications. Diagnosis is difficult due to nonspecific symptoms, but echocardiography is a highly sensitive diagnostic method. Albendazole treatment is effective in managing these cysts and can be an alternative to surgery. A patient with multiple cardiac hydatid cysts was successfully treated with albendazole, highlighting the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent life-threatening complications.

RESUMO

Rabies is a lethal viral disease transmitted through the bite of rabid animals. India has a high burden of rabies, contributing to a significant proportion of the global deaths. However, under-reporting of the disease is prevalent due to lack of laboratory confirmation. Laboratory diagnosis of rabies plays a crucial role in differentiating the disease from clinical mimics, initiation of appropriate care, implementing infection control measures and informing disease surveillance. This review provides an overview of the recent advancements in laboratory diagnosis of rabies, aimed at updating physicians involved in diagnosis and management of rabies cases in India.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) poses significant risks during pregnancy for both mother and fetus. Adherence to oral antidiabetic medications, like glibenclamide (GB), can be challenging, necessitating novel drug delivery methods. Nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) offer a promising approach by efficiently permeating the skin due to their small size and lipid-based composition. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate transdermal patches loaded with glibenclamide NLCs to treat GDM. METHODS: Glibenclamide NLCs were prepared using hot homogenization with ultrasonication and melt dispersion method. A central composite design was utilized to optimize the formulations. Transdermal patches containing optimized NLCs were developed using HPMC K 100 and Eudragit L polymers. The patches were evaluated for various parameters, and their pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies were carried out to assess their safety and efficacy. RESULTS: Optimized NLCs efficiently permeated rat skin. Cell viability studies indicated the nontoxicity of the formulations. NLC-loaded transdermal patches (F2 and F7) showed drug release of 1098 µg/cm2 and 1001.83 µg/cm2 in 24 h, with a 2.5-fold higher flux and permeation coefficient than the GB patch. Pharmacokinetic analysis revealed Tmax of 8 and 10 h and Cmax of 7127 ng/ml and 7960 ng/ml for F2 and F7, respectively, ensuring sustained drug action. AUC0-α was 625681 ng/ml·h and 363625 ng/ml·h for F2 and F7, respectively, indicating improved bioavailability. CONCLUSION: Transdermal patches incorporating NLCs hold promise for enhancing glibenclamide's therapeutic efficacy in GDM treatment. Improved skin permeation, sustained drug release, and enhanced bioavailability make NLC-based transdermal patches a potential alternative with better patient compliance.

Extra-abdominal fibromatosis is an uncommon, benign locally aggressive fibrous soft-tissue tumor that usually occurs in the shoulders, chest wall, back, thigh, and head and neck affecting the young adult population. It is commonly located in the subcutaneous tissue and may infiltrate the adjacent skeletal muscles. We hereby report a rare case of a large extra-abdominal fibromatosis of the leg and foot in a 38-year-old woman. The patient presented with a large voluminous lesion clinically and on imaging, which was difficult to diagnose. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was very helpful in diagnosing the lesion. It revealed a large relatively well-defined, lobulated hypointense mass in the posterior compartment of the leg with extension into the lower thigh and foot with local infiltration into the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. An incisional biopsy was performed, and the mass was diagnosed on pathological examination as a spindle-shaped fibroblast proliferation suggesting extra-abdominal fibromatosis.

Rabies, a lethal zoonotic encephalitis, remains a significant global health concern, causing an estimated 60 000 annual fatalities worldwide. Dogs serve as the primary reservoirs and vectors for transmitting this infection to humans. Definitive diagnosis of rabies in both human and animal cases necessitates laboratory testing involving various clinical specimens. However, the complexity of laboratory infrastructure and the need for skilled personnel, along with the challenge of maintaining cold-chain integrity during sample referral, hinder the decentralization of diagnostic facilities. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of the Truenat rabies assay, a rapid, portable, semiautomated, and closed PCR-based system, for the diagnosis of rabies in both humans and animals. The Truenat assay demonstrated a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 86.96% when compared with the fluorescent antibody test (FAT), as the reference standard, on 147 canine brain samples tested. Notably, the Truenat assay exhibited a sensitivity and specificity of 100% when tested on 48 human brain specimens. Furthermore, an examination of 148 human antemortem samples (cerebrospinal fluid, saliva, and skin biopsy) using both the Truenat assay and a validated real-time reverse transcriptase PCR assay revealed a κ value of 0.505, indicative of a moderate level of agreement between the two tests. Thus, the Truenat assay offers a robust, reliable, and affordable point-of-care solution to enhance rabies diagnostic capacity in endemic areas.

Nothapodytes nimmoniana belongs to family Icacinaceae and is a major source of compound Camptothecin. The global demand for Camptothecin has caused large-scale exploitation of N. nimmoniana from its wild habitat in Western Ghats of India, thereby making it vulnerable. The species is known to exhibit genetic diversity among the populations in Western Ghats. In this study, we report plastome sequence of N. nimmoniana, first for the genus. For the study, the species was collected from Western Ghats of Maharashtra. The plastome of N. nimmoniana was 150,726 bp in length and exhibited typical quadripartite structure with 83,771 bp LSC, 18,513 bp SSC and 24,221 IR region. The plastome was characterized by presence of 124 unique genes, 87 protein coding genes, 29 tRNA genes and four rRNA genes. Further, the plastome was compared with the available basal lamiid plastomes for gene order and composition. N. nimmoniana plastome exhibited SSC region in an inverted configuration. Phylogenomic study placed N. nimmoniana sister to Mappia mexicana. The SSR markers identified in this study, might help to distinguish genetically diverse populations, prioritizing the populations which need immediate conservation effects as well as for checking adulteration.

PURPOSE: Dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) can greatly decrease quality of life for individuals with dysphagia and can lead to caregiver burden and third-party disability. Support groups have been shown to be effective in improving quality of life in a range of conditions, through allowing individuals to form connections with those with shared experiences and sharing and learning about relevant resources and coping skills. However, no research on the effects of dysphagia support groups on quality of life has been conducted. This preliminary study aimed to determine whether a virtual support group, facilitated by speech-language pathologists, could positively affect quality of life in similar ways for adults with dysphagia and their family caregivers. METHOD: Pre- and postsupport group surveys were sent to participants to gain information about their dysphagia, demographics, and support group feedback (e.g., access to resources). Questions were mainly multiple choice, with three open-ended questions related to the support group. RESULTS: Eight individuals participated in the surveys, with four completing both pre- and postsession surveys. Seven of eight individuals reported that they felt a support group could improve their quality of life, with the eighth being unsure. Qualitative data found the support group offered both informational (e.g., resource access) and psychosocial support (e.g., knowledge that they were not alone, emotional support). CONCLUSION: These initial results suggest that a dysphagia support group could fill a gap in the health care system to offer more holistic support to individuals with dysphagia and their family caregivers.

INTRODUCTION: Plantar fasciitis is a debilitating clinical condition and is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The risk factors include frequent and prolonged running, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, work-related weight bearing, and inappropriate footwear. Ultrasonography being a non-invasive, cost-effective, and easily available modality is a useful adjunct in the diagnosis. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted among 30 patients with unilateral plantar fasciitis. The diagnosis was based on history and examination. Heel pad thickness and plantar fascia thickness were recorded using ultrasonography. RESULTS: The ultrasonography results showed increased plantar fascia and heel pad thickness in the affected limb with plantar fasciitis than the normal one (p<0.001). The BMI was positively correlated with the heel pad thickness (p<0.05). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve showed 90% sensitivity and 60% specificity for heel pad thickness (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasonography is a sensitive and specific tool to identify patients with plantar fasciitis.

Loranthaceae is the largest family of the order Santalales and includes root and stem hemiparasites. The parasites are known to exhibit reductions in the genomic features as well as relaxed or intensified selection shifts. In this study, we report plastome and mitogenome sequence of Helicanthes elastica (subtribe Amyeminae, tribe Lorantheae), an endemic, monotypic genus of Western Ghats, India growing on remarkably diverse host range. The length of plastome sequence was 1,28,805 bp while that of mitogenome was 1,65,273 bp. This is the smallest mitogenome from Loranthaceae reported till date. The plastome of Helicanthes exhibited loss of ndh genes (ψndhB), ψinfA, rps15, rps16, rpl32, trnK-UUU, trnG-UCC, trnV-UAC and trnA-UGC while mitogenome exhibited pseudogenized cox2, nad1 and nad4 genes. The comparative study of Loranthaceae plastomes revealed that the pseudogenization or loss of genes was not specific to any genus or tribe and variation was noted in the number of introns of clpP gene in the family. Several photosynthetic genes have undergone relaxed selection supporting lower photosynthetic rates in parasitic plants while some respiratory genes exhibited intensified selection supporting the idea of host-parasite arm race in Loranthaceae. The plastome gene content was found conserved in root hemiparasites compared to stem hemiparasites. The atp1 gene of mitogenome was chimeric and part of it exhibited similarities with Lamiales members. The phylogenetic analysis based on plastid genes placed Helicanthes sister to the members of subtribe Dendrophthoinae.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) being a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes, tend to disseminate antibiotic resistance that possibly pose a threat to human and animal health. Therefore, the study focuses on the prevalence of macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin- (MLS) resistance among LAB isolated from various food samples. Diverse phenotypic and genotypic MLS resistance were determined among the LAB species (n = 146) isolated from fermented food products (n = 6) and intestine of food-producing animals (n = 4). Double disc, triple disc diffusion and standard minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests were evaluated for phenotypic MLS resistance. Specific primers for MLS resistance genes were used for the evaluation of genotypic MLS resistance and gene expressions using total RNA of each isolate at different antibiotic concentrations. The isolates identified are Levilactobacillus brevis (n = 1), Enterococcus hirae (n = 1), Limosilactobacillus fermentum (n = 2), Pediococcus acidilactici (n = 3), Enterococcus faecalis (n = 1). The MIC tests along with induction studies displayed cMLSb, L phenotype, M phenotype, KH phenotype, I phenotype resistance among MLS antibiotics. Genotypic evaluation tests revealed the presence of ermB, mefA/E, msrA/B and msrC genes. Also, gene expression studies displayed increased level of gene expression to the twofold increased antibiotic concentrations. In the view of global health concern, this study identified that food samples and food-producing animals represent source of antibiotic resistant LAB that can disseminate resistance through food chain. This suggests the implementation of awareness in the use of antibiotics as growth promoters and judicious use of antibiotics in veterinary sectors in order to prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (sCSF) leaks develop from pressure erosion due to idiopathic intracranial hypertension, treatment of which is paramount to preventing recurrence. Direct measurements of intracranial pressure (ICP) for monitoring response to treatment via lumbar drain (LD) or ventriculostomy are invasive and have risks. The objectives of this study are to determine whether ultrasonographic measurements of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) correlate with LD ICP in patients with sCSF leaks undergoing treatment, and whether ONSDs are larger in patients with sCSF leaks than controls. METHODS: Subjects with sCSF leaks and controls were prospectively recruited. ONSD, sex, and body mass index (BMI) were analyzed. For sCSF leak subjects, ultrasonography was performed at the time of LD opening and each pressure check postoperatively, including the acetazolamide response. In control patients, measurements were obtained at the time of surgery. Pearson's correlation between ONSD and ICP was performed. RESULTS: Subjects with sCSF leaks (n = 9, age 52.4 ± 9.5, all female) and controls (n = 8, age 60.1 ± 14.8, two females) had significantly different BMIs, 38.4 ± 8.1 vs. 29.2 ± 4.8, t(15) = 2.793, p = 0.014. ONSD was strongly correlated with ICP measurements (r = 0.583, p = 0.002). However, percentage change in ONSD and ICP measurements were more strongly correlated (r = 0.733, p < 0.001). Patients with sCSF leaks had significantly higher ONSDs than controls, 0.63 cm ± 0.044 vs. 0.56 cm ± 0.074, t(15) = 2.329, p = 0.034. CONCLUSION: ONSD significantly correlated with ICP in sCSF leak patients and was wider in sCSF leak subjects than controls. Ultrasonography has utility in monitoring the ICP response to acetazolamide.

MAIN CONCLUSION: Novel cytochrome P450s, CYP81B140 and CYP81B141 from Plumbago zeylanica were functionally characterized to understand their involvement in polyketide plumbagin biosynthesis. Further, we propose 3-methyl-1-8-naphthalenediol and isoshinanolone as intermediates for plumbagin biosynthesis. Plumbago zeylanica L. (P. zeylanica) is a medicinally important plant belonging to the family Plumbaginaceae. It comprises the most abundant naphthoquinone plumbagin having anti-cancer activity. Only the polyketide synthase (PKS) enzyme has been identified from the biosynthetic pathway which catalyzes iterative condensation of acetyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA molecules. The plumbagin biosynthesis involves hydroxylation, oxidation, hydration and dehydration of intermediate compounds which are expected to be catalyzed by cytochrome P450s (CYPs). To identify the CYPs, co-expression analysis was carried out using PKS as a candidate gene. Out of the eight identified CYPs, CYP81B140 and CYP81B141 have similar expression with PKS and belong to the CYP81 family. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that CYP81B140 and CYP81B141 cluster with CYPs from CYP81B, CYP81D, CYP81E and CYP81AA subfamilies which are known to be involved in the hydroxylation and oxidation reactions. Moreover, artificial microRNA-mediated transient individual silencing and co-silencing of CYP81B140 and CYP81B141 significantly reduced plumbagin and increased the 3-methyl-1-8-naphthalenediol and isoshinanolone content. Based on metabolite analysis, we proposed that 3-methyl-1-8-naphthalenediol and isoshinanolone function as intermediates for plumbagin biosynthesis. Transient silencing, over-expression and docking analysis revealed that CYP81B140 is involved in C-1 oxidation, C-4 hydroxylation and [C2-C3] hydration of 3-methyl-1-8-naphthalenediol to form isoshinanolone, whereas CYP81B141 is catalyzing [C2-C3] dehydration and C-4 oxidation of isoshinanolone to form plumbagin. Our results indicated that both CYP81B140 and CYP81B141 are promiscuous and necessary for plumbagin biosynthesis. This is the first report of identification and functional characterization of P. zeylanica-specific CYPs involved in plumbagin biosynthetic pathway and in general hexaketide synthesis in plants.

PURPOSE: It is important to pinpoint modifiable factors contributing to reduced dysphagia-related quality of life (QoL) in order to improve treatment outcomes and patient health given that a large proportion of stroke survivors experience dysphagia. The purpose of this exploratory study was to identify the independent predictors of dysphagia-related QoL in community-dwelling stroke survivors. METHOD: A sample of 31 adult stroke survivors with dysphagia (M age = 62 years; 23 males) and their partners (M age = 57 years; seven males) participated in the study. Survivors were > 3 months poststroke and living with their partner. Backward regression analysis methods were employed to determine independent predictors of dysphagia-related QoL using scores from the Swallowing-Related Quality of Life questionnaire. Independent variables tested included age, employment status, receiving dysphagia treatment, number of medical conditions, level of diet modification, Stroke Impact Scale (SIS) scores, relationship with partner, partner age, partner employment status, partner burden, and partner depression. RESULTS: Results indicated that number of survivor medical conditions, degree of diet modification, SIS emotional subscale score, and partner employment status significantly predicted dysphagia-related QoL (p < .001). More specifically, stroke survivors with more medical conditions or a partner who worked outside of the home had worse dysphagia-related QoL, and those with better mental health or a less modified diet had better dysphagia-related QoL. CONCLUSION: Factors related to dysphagia-related QoL are multifactorial and include both survivor and spousal variables. The results of this exploratory study highlight the need for clinicians and researchers to consider patient function and needs more wholistically to maximize perceived QoL.

Dysphagia is commonly diagnosed in patients living with dementia, but we lack understanding of changes in swallowing physiology and the resulting relationship to impairments of safety and efficiency. The purpose of this study was to describe the pathophysiology of dysphagia in a retrospective sample of patients living with dementia. Videofluoroscopy data from 106 adults (mean age: 84) diagnosed with dementia were scored by blinded raters. Raters analyzed 412 thin liquid swallows for safety [Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS)], efficiency [% of (C2-C4)2], timing [Pharyngeal Transit Time (PTT), Swallow Reaction Time (SRT), Laryngeal Vestibule Closure Reaction Time (LVCrt), Upper Esophageal Sphincter Opening Duration (UESO)], and kinematics (pharyngeal constriction). Impairment thresholds from existing literature were used to characterize swallowing. Chi-square tests and Pearson's correlations were used to determine associations between swallowing physiology and function. Compared to published norms, we identified significant differences in PTT, SRT, LVCrt, UESO, and degree of maximum pharyngeal constriction. Unsafe swallowing (PAS > 2) was seen in 17% of swallows. Clinically significant residue (i.e., % of (C2-C4)2 > 0.54 vallecular; > 0.34 pyriforms) was seen in most patients. Chi-square tests revealed significant associations between LVCrt and unsafe swallowing. There was a weak positive association between post-swallow residue in the pyriforms and poor pharyngeal constriction. Detailed analysis of swallowing physiology in this sample provides insight into the pathophysiological mechanisms associated with dysphagia in patients living with dementia. Further work is needed to explore additional bolus consistencies and to identify how physiology changes based on type and severity of dementia diagnosis.

Natural polymers have attracted a lot of interest in researchers of late as they are environmentally friendly, biocompatible, and possess excellent characters. Membranes forming natural polymers have provided a whole new dimension to the separation technology. In this work, chitosan-gelatin blend membranes were fabricated using chitosan as the base and varying the amount of gelatin. Transport, mechanical, and surface characteristics of the fabricated membranes were examined in detail by means of the characterizing techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning colorimetry, wide angle X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and thermogravimetric analysis. In order to analyze the water affinity of the developed blend chitosan-gelatin membranes, the percentage degree of swelling was examined. Out of the fabricated membranes, the membrane loaded with 15 mass% of gelatin exhibited the better pervaporation performance with a pervaporation separation index value of 266 at 30 °C for the solution containing 10% in terms of the mass of water, which is the highest among the contemporary membranes. All the fabricated membranes were stable during the pervaporation experiments, and permeation flux of water for the fabricated membranes was dominant in the overall total permeation flux, signifying that the developed membranes could be chosen for efficient separation of water-isopropanol mixture on a larger scale.

The genus Limonium, commonly known as Sea Lavenders, is one of the most species-rich genera of the family Plumbaginaceae. In this study, two new plastomes for the genus Limonium, viz. L. tetragonum and L. bicolor, were sequenced and compared to available Limonium plastomes, viz. L. aureum and L. tenellum, to understand the gene content and structural variations within the family. The loss of the rpl16 intron and pseudogenisation of rpl23 was observed. This study reports, for the first time, expansion of the IRs to include the ycf1 gene in Limonium plastomes, incongruent with previous studies. Two positively selected genes, viz. ndhF and ycf2, were identified. Furthermore, putative barcodes are proposed for the genus, based on the nucleotide diversity of four Limonium plastomes.

Purpose Caregiver burden negatively impacts both stroke survivor and caregiver well-being. Thus, it is important to better understand the individual- and dyadic-level variables that may contribute to dysphagia-related caregiver burden. The aim of this preliminary study was to identify survivor-, caregiver-, and dyadic-specific factors associated with burden in couples experiencing poststroke dysphagia. Method Twenty-eight stroke survivors ("care recipients") with dysphagia and their spouses ("caregivers") participated. Care recipients and caregivers completed a survey from which scores for the following variables were derived: dysphagia-related caregiver burden, survivor- and spouse-perceived impact of dysphagia on mealtimes (social, mealtime logistics), dyadic congruence on perceived impact, International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative Functional Diet Scale, Swallowing-Related Quality of Life Scale, and Stroke Impact Scale (cognitive, emotional, physical, and social domains). Spearman's rho and point biserial correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the factors related to caregiver burden. Results Increased burden was significantly associated with greater care recipient- and spouse-perceived impact of dysphagia on mealtime logistics; however, burden was not associated with measures of dyadic congruence of perceived impact. Notably, increased burden was also associated with increased diet restrictiveness and decreased swallow-specific quality of life. Dysphagia-related caregiver burden was not associated with measures of stroke impact/severity across any domain. Conclusions Factors related to dysphagia-related caregiver burden are multifactorial and include both care recipient (e.g., International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative Functional Diet Scale, Swallowing-Related Quality of Life Scale, perceived impact of dysphagia on mealtime logistics) and caregiver (e.g., perceived impact of dysphagia on mealtime logistics) variables. The results of this preliminary investigation support the need to incorporate aspects of counseling and family-centered care into our management practices, a growing area of interest for speech-language pathologists.
