BACKGROUND: Hartmann's procedure (HP) is commonly applied to resolve acute clinical conditions in most cases with colonic obstruction or perforation. HP and the closure of the end colostomy are associated with high morbidity-mortality rates. In our study, we aimed to report our clinical experience in HP. METHODS: Demographic data and outcomes of Hartmann procedures performed between 2015 and 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: The median age of our study was 63 (18-94) years; 65 of the patients were female, and 97 were male. Colorectal malig-nancies were the primary etiology in 50% of patients who underwent HP, with 70% presenting with obstruction and 30% with perfora-tion. Two-thirds of the patients were American Society of Anesthesiologists-2 or higher. Postoperative complications did not develop in 74.7% of patients. Our mortality rate was 33.3%. The colostomy was closed in 59 patients during an average 2-year follow-up. The median closure time was 311 (57-1319) days. A stapler was used in 89.8% of patients during the closure. A diverting ileostomy was created in only two patients. The median hospital stay was 8 (5-70) days. Post-operative complications did not develop in 25.4% of patients, while four patients died. CONCLUSION: In our population, HP was more commonly performed for colorectal cancer. The procedure and closure of the ostomy result in low stoma closure rates, high morbidity, and mortality rates, as well as surgical difficulties.

Sainfoin (Onobrychis spp.) is a perennial forage legume that is also attracting attention as a perennial pulse with potential for human consumption. The dual use of sainfoin underpins diverse research and breeding programs focused on improving sainfoin lines for forage and pulses, which is driving the generation of complex datasets describing high dimensional phenotypes in the post-omics era. To ensure that multiple user groups, for example, breeders selecting for forage and those selecting for edible seed, can utilize these rich datasets, it is necessary to develop common ontologies and accessible ontology platforms. One such platform, Crop Ontology, was created in 2008 by the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR) to host crop-specific trait ontologies that support standardized plant breeding databases. In the present study, we describe the sainfoin crop ontology (CO). An in-depth literature review was performed to develop a comprehensive list of traits measured and reported in sainfoin. Because the same traits can be measured in different ways, ultimately, a set of 98 variables (variable = plant trait + method of measurement + scale of measurement) used to describe variation in sainfoin were identified. Variables were formatted and standardized based on guidelines provided here for inclusion in the sainfoin CO. The 98 variables contained a total of 82 traits from four trait classes of which 24 were agronomic, 31 were morphological, 19 were seed and forage quality related, and 8 were phenological. In addition to the developed variables, we have provided a roadmap for developing and submission of new traits to the sainfoin CO.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to comparatively evaluate early to mid-term clinical results of case-matched patient groups of primary repairs with dynamic intraligamentary stabilization (DIS) or all-inside anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) by an independent group. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between March 2015 and September 2018, a total of 16 patients operated for ACL injuries with the repair technique were retrospectively identified. Cases were stratified by treatment: DIS technique versus all-inside ACLR and matched at a ratio of 1:2. The ACLR patients were selected from a patient group with an injury-to-operation time interval of fewer than three months. A total of 32 patients were included in the all inside ACLR group. Pre-injury and postoperative International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective score, Tegner and Lysholm scores had been obtained. Additionally, ACL-Return to Sport after Injury (ACL-RSI) scale scores, clinical results, and complications were noted. RESULTS: One (6%) patient in the DIS group and two (6%) patients in the ACLR group were lost-to-follow-up and, for a total of 45 patients, 15 in the DIS group and 30 in the ACLR group, were included in the study. The mean postoperative follow-up was 50.8±13.5 months and 48.2±11.4 months in the DIS and ACLR groups, respectively. The Tegner, Lysholm, and IKDC subjective scores were non-significantly different between the groups at any time points. The ACL-RSI scale scores were significantly higher at six (p<0.001) and 12 (p=0.01) months in the repair group. The pivot-shift test was negative in all cases postoperatively. One re-rupture occurred in each group. The reoperation rate at any cause was 25% for the repair and 10% for the ACLR group. CONCLUSION: Primary ACL repair using the DIS technique provides a similar clinical outcome to these by an all-inside ACLR technique in moderately active patients. The DIS technique is reliable and reproducible, and associated with an early and speedier psychological recovery in a carefully selected, non-athlete patient group as observed by an independent group.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the accepted standard treatment for acute cholecystitis (AC) in patients eligible for surgery. Percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) can provide a permanent treatment for high-risk patients for surgery or act as a bridge for later surgical treatment. This study is an evaluation of the use of PC during the current coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic at a single hospital. METHODS: Fifty patients with AC were admitted as of the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey through June 2020. Patients with pancreatitis, cholangitis, and/or incomplete data were excluded from the study. Data of the remaining 36 patients included in the study were recorded and a descriptive statistical analysis was performed. The patients were divided into three groups: PC (n=14), only conservative treatment with antibiotherapy (OC) (n=14), and LC (n=8). The findings were compared with a group of 70 similar patients from the pre-pandemic period. RESULTS: The mean age of the pandemic period patients was 53 years (range: 26-78 years). The female/male ratio was 1.11. PC was preferred in eight (11%) patients in the same period of the previous year, whereas 14 (39%) patients underwent PC in the pandemic period. Four of the 36 pandemic patients were positive for COVID-19, including one member of the PC group. There was one (7.1%) mortality in the pandemic-period PC group due to cardiac arrest. The length of hospital stay between the groups based on the type of treatment was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: LC is not recommended during the pandemic period; PC can be an effective and safe alternative for the treatment of AC.

RESUMO

One of the most tedious steps in genetic data analyses is the reformatting data generated with one program for use with other applications. This conversion is necessary because comprehensive evaluation of the data may be based on different algorithms included in diverse software, each requiring a distinct input format. A platform-independent and freely available program or a web-based tool dedicated to such reformatting can save time and efforts in data processing. Here, we report widgetcon, a website and a program which has been developed to quickly and easily convert among various molecular data formats commonly used in phylogenetic analysis, population genetics, and other fields. The web-based service is available at https://www.widgetcon.net. The program and the website convert the major data formats in four basic steps in less than a minute. The resource will be a useful tool for the research community and can be updated to include more formats and features in the future.
