RESUMO

In this study, we provide a theoretical explanation for the experimentally observed decrease in the organocatalytic activity of N-aryl imidazolylidenes methylated at the C4/5-H positions in the benzoin condensation of aromatic aldehydes. A comparative quantum chemical study of energy profiles for the NHC-mediated benzoin condensation of furfural has revealed a high energy barrier to the formation of the IPrMe-based furanic Breslow intermediate that can be attributed to the negative steric interactions between the imidazole backbone methyl groups and N-aryl substituents.

RESUMO

Bis(carbazolide) complexes M[3,6-tBu2 -1,8-(RC≡C)2 Carb]2 (THF)n (R=SiMe3 , n=0, M=Ca, Yb; R=Ph, n=1, M=Ca, Yb; n=0, M=Yb) were synthesized through transamination reaction of M[N(SiMe3 )2 ]2 (THF)2 with two molar equivalents of carbazoles. The complexes feature M(η2 -C≡C)4 structural motif composed of M(II) ions encapsulated by four acetylene fragments due to atypical for alkaline- and rare-earth metals η2 -interactions with triple C≡C bond. This interaction is evidenced experimentally by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy in the solid state and by NMR-spectroscopy in the solution. According to QTAIM analysis there are 4 bond critical points (3;-1) between the metal atom and each of the triple bonds, which are connected by a strongly curved, almost T-shaped bond pathway.

Photochemical properties of symmetrical pyromellitic diimide containing two cymantrenyl fragments at two nitrogen atoms were studied with IR, NMR, UV-vis, ESI-MS, and cyclic voltammetry. It was found that new unstable chelates are formed during photolysis. At the same time, the CO ligand dissociates from two Mn(CO)3 fragments during photoexcitation, which dramatically changes the electronic and redox properties of the molecule compared to the cymantrene derivative containing one imide fragment. Photolysis leads to a color change from light yellow to green. DFT calculations confirmed the possibility of the formation of complexes due to the loss of one or two CO ligands from manganese atoms. The results obtained with variation of photolysis conditions demonstrated the hemilabile character of the Mn-O=C(imide) bond. On addition of external ligands, the color and electrochemical properties changed, which is promising for the use of this complex as a sensor for small molecules.

RESUMO

Herein, we propose a novel mechanistic model for NHC-mediated carbonyl umpolung which involves the formation of a carbanionic carbene Breslow intermediate (CCBI). We have demonstrated theoretically that this reactive intermediate can be formed by inserting an aldehyde into the C4-H position of an N-aryl-substituted imidazolium-derived NHC via the generation of an H-bonded ditopic carbanionic NHC (dcNHC). Our DFT study on benzoin condensation has revealed that the mechanism of polarity inversion proceeding through the CCBI may be more energetically favorable than the classical mechanism of umpolung that uses the C2 carbene position in NHC. The potential existence of the CCBI highlights the dynamic and adaptive nature of NHC-mediated organocatalysis, particularly in relation to carbonyl umpolung. This finding also sheds light on new pathways in organocatalytic transformations employing the ambident reactivity of NHC, which may be particularly attractive for reactions involving furanic aldehydes and sterically encumbered N-aryl-substituted carbenes.

In order to expand the range of materials that can be used in outer space and in development of small spacecraft, ladder polyphenylsilsesquioxanes with different molar weights and the Nb-siloxane composites based on them were studied. The properties of the polymer films were studied, including tests in an oxygen plasma flow. Both initial and filled ladder polymers feature extremely low erosion coefficients in the region of 10-26 cm3/atom O at a high fluence of atomic oxygen of 1.0 × 1021 atom O/cm2. Ladder polyphenylsilsesquioxane films irradiated with atomic oxygen (AO) retain their integrity, do not crack, and exhibit good optical properties, in particular, a high transmittance. The latter slightly decreases during AO exposure. The Nb-siloxane filling retains the AO resistance and slight decrease in optical transmission due to diffuse scattering on the formed Nb-[(SiO)x] nanoparticles. Ladder polyphenylsilsesquioxanes demonstrate their suitability for creating protective, optically transparent coatings for small spacecraft that are resistant to the erosive effects of incoming oxygen plasma.

Benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bis([1,2,3]thiadiazole) (isoBBT) is a new electron-withdrawing building block that can be used to obtain potentially interesting compounds for the synthesis of OLEDs and organic solar cells components. The electronic structure and delocalization in benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bis([1,2,3]thiadiazole), 4-bromobenzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bis([1,2,3]thiadiazole), and 4,8-dibromobenzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bis([1,2,3]thiadiazole) were studied using X-ray diffraction analysis and ab initio calculations by EDDB and GIMIC methods and were compared to the corresponding properties of benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']bis[1,2,5]thiadiazole (BBT). Calculations at a high level of theory showed that the electron affinity, which determines electron deficiency, of isoBBT was significantly smaller than that of BBT (1.09 vs. 1.90 eV). Incorporation of bromine atoms improves the electrical deficiency of bromobenzo-bis-thiadiazoles nearly without affecting aromaticity, which increases the reactivity of these compounds in aromatic nucleophilic substitution reactions and, on the other hand, does not reduce the ability to undergo cross-coupling reactions. 4-Bromobenzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bis([1,2,3]thiadiazole) is an attractive object for the synthesis of monosubstituted isoBBT compounds. The goal to find conditions for the selective substitution of hydrogen or bromine atoms at position 4 in order to obtain compounds containing a (het)aryl group in this position and to use the remaining unsubstituted hydrogen or bromine atoms to obtain unsymmetrically substituted isoBBT derivatives, potentially interesting compounds for organic photovoltaic components, was not set before. Nucleophilic aromatic and cross-coupling reactions, along with palladium-catalyzed C-H direct arylation reactions for 4-bromobenzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bis([1,2,3]thiadiazole), were studied and selective conditions for the synthesis of monoarylated derivatives were found. The observed features of the structure and reactivity of isoBBT derivatives may be useful for building organic semiconductor-based devices.

A method is reported to control the stereoselectivity at C(20) in the syntheses of 20-R-21,21,21-trifluorothevinols (12), the opioid ligands incorporating fluorine atoms within the pharmacophore associated with the surroundings of the C(20) carbon atom. The C(20)-alcohols 12 can be prepared either by reaction of 21,21,21-trifluorothevinone (9) with RM (R = alkyl; M = Li, MgX) or by reaction of thevinone (2) and related non-fluorinated ketones with CF3SiMe3. In general, alcohols 12 were formed as mixtures of the C(20)-epimers, with the major epimers of the alcohols obtained from the aforementioned reactions exploiting RLi vs. CF3SiMe3 with opposite absolute configurations at C(20). Some individual C(20)-epimers of the fluorinated alcohols 12 were isolated from the reaction mixtures in pure form by trivial crystallization. The reactions of the ketones with RMgX (R ≠ Me) and RLi (R = tertiary or secondary alkyl) resulted in the reduction of the carbonyl function to produce the secondary alcohols 11a,b rather than the tertiary alcohols 12. The additives of the salts were found to affect the composition of the products in the reactions of 9 with alkyl organomagnesium and organolithium reagents.

Three new 3D metal-organic frameworks of lanthanum based on mixed anionic ligands, [(La2(pQ)2(BDC)4)·4DMF]n, [(La2(pQ)2(DHBDC)4)·4DMF]n, [(La2(CA)2(BDC)4)·4DMF]n (pQ-dianion of 2,5-dihydroxy-3,6-di-tert-butyl-para-quinone, CA-dianion of chloranilic acid, BDC-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate, DHBDC-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and DMF-N,N'-dimethylformamide), were synthesized using solvothermal methodology. Coordination polymers demonstrate the rare xah or 4,6T187 topology of a 3D framework. The homoleptic 2D-coordination polymer [(La2(pQ)3)·4DMF]n was obtained as a by-product in the course of synthetic procedure optimization. The thermal stability, spectral characteristics and porosity of coordination polymers were investigated.

A rare example of chemospecificity in the tandem Diels-Alder reaction of activated alkynes and bis-dienes has been revealed. The reaction between bis-furyl dienes and DMAD occurs at 25-80 °C and leads to kinetically controlled "pincer" adducts, 4a,8a-disubstituted 1,4:5,8-diepoxynaphthalenes. On the contrary, only thermodynamically controlled "domino" adducts (2,3-disubstituted 1,4:5,8-diepoxynaphthalenes) are formed in the same reaction at 140 °C. The "pincer" adducts can be transformed to the "domino" adducts at heating. The rate constants for reactions of both types were calculated using dynamic 1H NMR spectroscopy.

The reactions of picolinyl and 4-chloropicolinyl chlorides with methyl esters of S-methyl-l-cysteine, l- and d-methionine, and l-histidine afforded a series of functionalized carboxamides, which readily formed pincer-type complexes upon interaction with PdCl2(NCPh)2 in solution under mild conditions. The direct cyclopalladation of the ligands derived was also accomplished in the solid phase, in particular, mechanochemically, although it was complicated by the partial deactivation of the starting amides. The resulting complexes with 5,5- and 5,6-membered fused metallocycles were fully characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy, including variable-temperature and 2D-NMR studies. In the case of some cysteine- and methionine-based derivatives, the realization of κ3-N,N,S-coordination was supported by X-ray diffraction. The cytotoxic effects of these complexes were examined on HCT116, MCF7, and PC3 human cancer cell lines as well as HEK293 as a representative of normal cells. The comparative studies allowed us to determine that the presence of the sulfide ancillary donor group is crucial for cytotoxic activity of this type of Pd(II) complexes. The main structure-activity relationships and the most promising palladocycles were outlined. The additional studies by gel electrophoresis revealed that 4-chloropicolinyl derivatives, despite the nature of an amino acid, can bind with DNA and inhibit topoisomerase I activity.

A series of benzannulated N-heterocyclic compounds containing divalent 14 group atoms, C6H4(NR)2EII, E = C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, have been studied by various experimental (vibrational and UV-vis spectroscopy) and theoretical (NICS, ISE, ACID) techniques. The methods used confirm 10 π-electron delocalization (aromaticity) in these heterocycles, however, the aromaticity sequences estimated by the criteria based on different physical properties do not coincide.

Hybrid scorpionate ligand (OPPh2)2CHCH2C(O)Me (L) was synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods and X-ray diffraction. The selected coordination chemistry of L with UO2(NO3)2 and Ln(NO3)3 (Ln = La, Nd, Lu) has been evaluated. The isolated mono- and binuclear complexes, namely, [UO2(NO3)2L] (1), [{UO2(NO3)L}2(µ2-O2)]·EtOH (2), [La(NO3)3L2]·2.33MeCN (3), [Nd(NO3)3L2]·3MeCN (4), [Nd(NO3)2L2]+·(NO3)−·EtOH (5) and [Lu(NO3)3L2] (6) have been characterized by IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Single-crystal X-ray structures have been determined for complexes 1-5. Intramolecular intraligand π-stacking interactions between two phenyl fragments of the coordinated ligand(s) were observed in all complexes 1-5. The π-stacking interaction energy was estimated from Bader's AIM theory calculations performed at the DFT level. Solution properties have been examined using IR and multinuclear ((1)H, (13)C, and (31)P) NMR spectroscopy in CD3CN and CDCl3. Coordination modes of L vary with the coordination polyhedron of the metal and solvent nature showing many coordination modes: P(O),P(O), P(O),P(O),C(O), P(O),C(O), and P(O). Preliminary extraction studies of U(VI) and Ln(III) (Ln = La, Nd, Ho, Yb) from 3.75 M HNO3 into CHCl3 show that scorpionate L extracts f-block elements (especially uranium) better than its unmodified prototype (OPPh2)2CH2.

A disiladicarbene, (Cy-cAAC)2Si2 (2), was synthesized by reduction of Cy-cAAC:SiCl4 adduct with KC8. The dark-colored compound 2 is stable at room temperature for a year under an inert atmosphere. Moreover, it is stable up to 190 °C and also can be characterized by electron ionization mass spectrometry. Theoretical and Raman studies reveal the existence of a Si═Si double bond with a partial double bond between each carbene carbon atom and silicon atom. Cyclic voltammetry suggests that 2 can quasi-reversibly accept an electron to produce a very reactive radical anion, 2(•-), as an intermediate species. Thus, reduction of 2 with potassium metal at room temperature led to the isolation of an isomeric neutral rearranged product and an anionic dimer of a potassium salt via the formation of 2(•-).

Both dimeric µ-chlorine bridged and monomeric bidentate Pd(II) complexes with SCN hybrid pincer-type ligands, bearing thiophosphoryl group and imine moiety of the benzothiazole ring as coordination arms, formed in the reaction with (PhCN)(2)PdCl(2) under kinetic control (20 °C, dichloromethane solution) were readily converted into the corresponding SCN pincer complexes via solid phase synthesis (neat, 200 °C, 15 min). The synthesis of pincer complexes can be performed also by heating (200 °C, 5 min) of a homogeneous mixture of the initial reactants, namely, the ligand and (PhCN)(2)PdCl(2), obtained by manual grinding in a mortar. The efficacy of solid phase approaches is comparable with the analogous synthesis in solutions under severe conditions.

The structure and dynamic behaviour of monomeric lead(ii) dithiolate Pb(SCH(2)CH(2)NMe(2))(2) are studied by multi-nuclear NMR, IR and Raman spectroscopy in solution, as well as variable-temperature Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis in the solid-state, revealing an unusual dynamic "flip-flop" process in solution and reversible conformational isomerism of the chelated five-membered rings in the solid-state.

Sublimation of sulflower, octathio[8]circulene C 16S 8 ( 1), on heating under high vacuum ( approximately 10 (-5) Torr) leads to successive formation of two modifications: a white film ( 1W) and a red polycrystalline solid ( 1R). When kept at room temperature for several weeks, 1W spontaneously turns pink, reflecting the monotropic phase transition 1W --> 1R. The accurate molecular and crystal structure of 1R has been studied using low-temperature (100 K) high-resolution single crystal X-ray analysis. The C 16S 8 molecule in crystal is strictly planar with nearly equalized bonds of each type (C-C, C-S, and CC). The point symmetry group of the free molecule is D 8 h , and the crystal space group is P2 1/ n. These data allowed group-theoretical analysis of vibrational normal modes to be accomplished. Investigation of the charge density distribution of 1R including Bader's AIM approach has revealed rather strong intermolecular S...S, S...C, and C...C interactions of charge transfer and pi-stacking types with overall lattice energy of 28.5 kcal/mol. The charge transfer due to the S...S interactions is the reason for the red coloration of 1R. The latter is reflected by its UV-vis spectrum exhibiting absorption bands in the visible region which are absent from that of 1W. Both modifications were studied comparatively by vibrational (Raman, IR) and electronic spectroscopies as well as XRD powder diffraction. All the results obtained are fully consistent and show that 1W is much less ordered than 1R with significantly weakened intermolecular interactions. Rationalizing of these results has led to an idea that 1W could be soluble, in contrast to 1R. Indeed, 1W appeared soluble in common solvents; this finding opens the way to the study of the chemistry of 1 and investigation of its electrooptical properties.

A new trioxystannate-transition metal complex, {[Li][(Me(2)NCH(2)CH(2)O)(3)Sn-Fe(CO)(4)]}(2) (3), exhibiting an unusual type of the heteronuclear bonding between heavier Group 14 elements and transition metals, has been synthesised and completely characterised by NMR, Raman and IR spectroscopy in solution as well as by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis in the solid state.

[chemical reaction: see text]. Treatment of N-substituted 2,5-dimethylpyrroles 2 with an equilibrated mixture of disulfur dichloride and DABCO in chloroform at 0 degrees C gives pentathiepinopyrroles 3 in moderate yields; further reaction of 3 with the same mixture at room temperature leads, in an extensive reaction cascade, to bis(dithiolo)pyrroles 4 in high yield; 2 can be converted into 4 in a one-pot operation under unusually mild conditions.
