RESUMO

English is widely recognized as the language of science, and English-language publications (ELPs) are rapidly increasing. It is often assumed that the number of non-ELPs is decreasing. This assumption contributes to the underuse of non-ELPs in conservation science, practice, and policy, especially at the international level. However, the number of conservation articles published in different languages is poorly documented. Using local and international search systems, we searched for scientific articles on biodiversity conservation published from 1980 to 2018 in English and 15 non-English languages. We compared the growth rate in publications across languages. In 12 of the 15 non-English languages, published conservation articles significantly increased every year over the past 39 years, at a rate similar to English-language articles. The other three languages showed contrasting results, depending on the search system. Since the 1990s, conservation science articles in most languages increased exponentially. The variation in the number of non-English-language articles identified among the search systems differed markedly (e.g., for simplified Chinese, 11,148 articles returned with local search system and 803 with Scopus). Google Scholar and local literature search systems returned the most articles for 11 and 4 non-English languages, respectively. However, the proportion of peer-reviewed conservation articles published in non-English languages was highest in Scopus, followed by Web of Science and local search systems, and lowest in Google Scholar. About 20% of the sampled non-English-language articles provided no title or abstract in English; thus, in theory, they were undiscoverable with English keywords. Possible reasons for this include language barriers and the need to disseminate research in countries where English is not widely spoken. Given the known biases in statistical methods and study characteristics between English- and non-English-language studies, non-English-language articles will continue to play an important role in improving the understanding of biodiversity and its conservation.

The widely held assumption that any important scientific information would be available in English underlies the underuse of non-English-language science across disciplines. However, non-English-language science is expected to bring unique and valuable scientific information, especially in disciplines where the evidence is patchy, and for emergent issues where synthesising available evidence is an urgent challenge. Yet such contribution of non-English-language science to scientific communities and the application of science is rarely quantified. Here, we show that non-English-language studies provide crucial evidence for informing global biodiversity conservation. By screening 419,679 peer-reviewed papers in 16 languages, we identified 1,234 non-English-language studies providing evidence on the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation interventions, compared to 4,412 English-language studies identified with the same criteria. Relevant non-English-language studies are being published at an increasing rate in 6 out of the 12 languages where there were a sufficient number of relevant studies. Incorporating non-English-language studies can expand the geographical coverage (i.e., the number of 2° × 2° grid cells with relevant studies) of English-language evidence by 12% to 25%, especially in biodiverse regions, and taxonomic coverage (i.e., the number of species covered by the relevant studies) by 5% to 32%, although they do tend to be based on less robust study designs. Our results show that synthesising non-English-language studies is key to overcoming the widespread lack of local, context-dependent evidence and facilitating evidence-based conservation globally. We urge wider disciplines to rigorously reassess the untapped potential of non-English-language science in informing decisions to address other global challenges. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is an antioxidant agent that has been shown to have beneficial effects when treating various diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of NAC on spinal cord injury in an experimental rat model. METHODS: A total of 48 adult male wistar albino rats were divided into six groups. Group C included the control rats, group L included the rats that underwent laminectomy, and group T included the rats in which spinal cord trauma was induced by the weight-drop method after laminectomy. Groups M (the methylprednisolone group), N (the NAC group), and MN (the methylprednisolone + NAC group) were the treatment groups. In the fourth group (group M), 30 mg/kg methylprednisolone (MP) was administered as a bolus intraperitoneally (IP), and a standard MP treatmentat a dose of 5.4 mg/kg was applied for 24 h. In the fifth group (group N), only 300 mg/kg NAC was administered as a bolus IP. In the sixth group (group MN), the standard MP treatment and a single 300 mg/kg dose of NAC were administered as a bolus IP. The motor functions of the rats were evaluated on the 1st, 7th, and 14th days using the inclined plane test defined by Rivlin and Tator and the motor scale defined by Gale et al. Spinal cord samples were obtained on the 14th day. The samples were evaluated using pathological and biochemical analysis. RESULTS: In the neuroclinical assessment, no differences were observed between groups T and M in terms of motor improvement. However, statistically significant differences were observed between group T and groups N and MN (p < 0.001, p = 0.01, respectively). Statistically significant differences were also seen between group M and groups N and MN on the 1st and 7th days (p < 0.017, p < 0.01, respectively). Additionally, when groups N and MN were compared with groups T and M,the pathological and biochemical analyses were found to be statistically different (p < 0.05, p < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: It was concluded that NAC treatment and the combined NAC + MP treatment may be more useful for healing in rats with experimental spinal cord injury in terms of neuroclinical, pathological, and biochemical results than MP-only therapy.

RESUMO

Circulating cardiac troponins are markers of myocardial injury. We sought to determine whether cardiac troponin I (cTnI), measured by a sensitive assay, is associated with disease severity and prognosis in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). cTnI was measured in 68 patients with PAH diagnostic category 1 in a research-based sensitive immunoanalyser with a lower limit of detection of 0.008 ng · mL(-1). The associations between cTnI and PAH severity and clinical outcomes were assessed using Chi-squared and Wilcoxon rank sum tests, Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression models. cTnI was detected in 25% of patients. Patients with detectable cTnI had more advanced functional class symptoms, a shorter 6-min walk distance, more pericardial effusions, larger right atrial area, and higher B-type natriuretic peptide and C-reactive protein levels. 36-month transplant-free survival was 44% in patients with detectable cTnI versus 85% in those with undetectable cTnI. cTnI was associated with a 4.7-fold increased risk of death related to right ventricular failure or transplant (hazard ratio 4.74, 95% CI 1.89-11.89; p<0.001), even when adjusted individually for known parameters of PAH severity. Elevated plasma cTnI, even at subclinically detectable levels, is associated with more severe disease and worse outcomes in patients with PAH.

RESUMO

For the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) pandemic, vaccination and infection control were the main modes of prevention. A live attenuated H1N1 vaccine mimics natural infection and works by evoking a host immune response, but currently there are no easy methods to measure such a response. To determine if an immune response could be measured in exhaled breath, exhaled nitric oxide (FE(NO)) and other exhaled breath volatiles using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) were measured before and daily for seven days after administering the H1N1 2009 monovalent live intranasal vaccine (FluMist®, MedImmune LLC) in nine healthy healthcare workers (age 35 ± 7 years; five females). On day 3 after H1N1 FluMist® administration there were increases in FE(NO) (MEAN±SEM: day 0 15 ± 3 ppb, day 3 19 ± 3 ppb; p < 0.001) and breath isoprene (MEAN±SEM: day 0 59 ± 15 ppb, day 3 99 ± 17 ppb; p = 0.02). MS analysis identified the greatest number of changes in exhaled breath on day 3 with 137 product ion masses that changed from baseline. The exhaled breath changes on day 3 after H1N1 vaccination may reflect the underlying host immune response. However, further work to elucidate the sources of the exhaled breath changes is necessary.

RESUMO

Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is a potential rich source for countless biomarkers that can provide valuable information about respiratory as well as systemic diseases. EBC has been studied in a variety of diseases including allergic rhinitis, asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Although numerous biomarkers have been discovered and studied in EBC, the methods of collection and biomarker detection have not been fully standardized. While leaving standardization methods up to individual labs for the present time is optimal for the continued discovery of new biomarkers in EBC, this decreases the reproducibility and generalizability of the findings. In this review we will discuss specific biomarkers studied in specific diseases as well as some of the related technical issues including collection, processing and analysis.

RESUMO

FT-IR and (1)H, (13)C, DEPT, HETCOR, COSY, and NOESY NMR spectra of 2-(1-cyclohexenyl)ethylamine (CyHEA) have been reported for the first time. The vibrational frequencies and (1)H, (13)C NMR chemical shifts of CyHEA (C(8)H(15)N) have been calculated by means of the Hartree-Fock (HF), Becke-Lee-Yang-Parr (BLYP) and Becke-3-Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) density functional methods with 6-31 G(d) and 6-31 G(d,p) basis sets, respectively. The comparison between the experimental and the theoretical results indicates that density functional B3LYP method is superior to the scaled HF and BLYP approach for vibrational frequencies and predicting NMR properties.

RESUMO

In myeloid malignancies, chromosome rearrangements involving band 3q21 are associated with a particularly poor prognosis of the disease. Their sensitive and unequivocal detection is therefore of great clinical importance. In this report, we describe the establishment of an interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay that complements classical cytogenetic analysis in the diagnosis of such aberrations. PACs that map centromeric and telomeric of known 3q21 breakpoints were labeled with different fluorescent dyes, and the separation of the normally colocalizing signals was used as an indicator of the presence of a 3q21 rearrangement. Two cell lines and 10 primary samples from myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients with 3q21 rearrangements were investigated using the newly established method. The rate of false positivity was determined in 27 control samples from patients with various types of myeloid malignancies. In addition to providing a sensitive and rapid test for the detection of 3q21 aberrations, the interphase FISH assay yields preliminary information about the localization of individual breakpoints. Six of the 10 breakpoints in the patient samples map to an only recently described breakpoint cluster region (BCR) 60 kb centromeric of the originally reported 3q21 BCR. These findings may contribute to the understanding of the molecular basis of the clinical features associated with 3q21 rearrangements.

RESUMO

"The demographic structure and fertility level of the population in two slum areas [in Turkey's Antalya Province]...were investigated with a cross-sectional study in 1989. It was found that the distribution of population by age groups differed and especially the fertility measurements were high in the new area in relation to various social and demographic characteristics. In order to facilitate and accelerate the transition period of slum communities, it is necessary to provide health education, mother and child health and family planning services." (SUMMARY IN ENG)
