RESUMO

The evolving prevalence of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) abuse among nonathletes is alarming because of the known harm to an individual's health. Among the adverse effects of AAS abuse, male infertility and sexual dysfunction have been often reported in the literature, but little is known regarding its actual prevalence, possible underpinning mechanisms, and potential treatments either during or post-AAS usage. Thus, the current narrative review summarizes the state-of-art regarding the effects of AAS on male fertility and sexual function. Evidence was gathered from the latest reviews and recent original studies, specifically from prospective cohorts and clinical trials, ultimately resulting in five main topics of discussion. First, AAS usage is briefly characterized by its historical background, main physiological mechanisms, and the most frequently used AAS substances. Second, data on the prevalence of AAS-induced male infertility and sexual dysfunction are described. Third, some new insights on possible underpinning mechanisms of AAS-induced male infertility and sexual dysfunction are thoroughly discussed, with particular attention to histological data derived from animal models and the latest insights from prospective cohorts in humans. Fourth, the potential treatments during and after the AAS usage are presented, highlighting the odds of resolving male infertility and sexual dysfunction. Fifth, future directions on this topic are discussed, focusing on the methodological robustness of scientific studies.

Carbohydrate (CHO) supplementation during endurance exercise can improve performance. However, it is unclear whether low glycemic index (GI) CHO leads to differential ergogenic and metabolic effects compared with a standard high GI CHO. This study investigated the ergogenic and metabolic effects of CHO supplementation with distinct GIs, namely, (a) trehalose (30 g/hr), (b) isomaltulose (30 g/hr), (c) maltodextrin (60 g/hr), and (d) placebo (water). In this double-blind, crossover, counterbalanced, placebo-controlled study, 13 male cyclists cycled a total of 100 min at varied exercise intensity (i.e., 10-min stages at 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 W/kg; repeated three times plus two 5-min stages at 1.0 W/kg before and after the protocol), followed by a 20-min time trial on four separated occasions. Blood glucose and lactate (every 20 min), heart rate, and ratings of perceived exertion were collected throughout, and muscle biopsies were taken before and immediately after exercise. The results showed that trehalose improved time-trial performance compared with placebo (total work done 302 ± 39 vs. 287 ± 48 kJ; p = .01), with no other differences between sessions (all p ≥ .07). Throughout the 100-min protocol, blood glucose was higher with maltodextrin compared with the other supplements at all time points (all p < .05). Heart rate, ratings of perceived exertion, muscle glycogen content, blood glucose, and lactate were not different between conditions when considering the 20-min time trial (all p > .05). Trehalose supplementation throughout endurance exercise improved cycling performance and appears to be an appropriate CHO source for exercise tasks up to 2 hr. No ergogenic superiority between the different types of CHO was established.

The aim of this article is to investigate the effects of different ramp-incremental (RI) slopes on fatigability and its recovery in females and males. Ten females and 11 males performed RI tests with distinct slopes, in separated and randomized sessions, 15 (RI15), 30 (RI30), and 45 (RI45) W·min-1. Performance fatigability was assessed by femoral nerve electrical stimuli evoked during and after isometric maximal voluntary contraction (IMVC) of knee extensors at baseline and after task failure at min 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 5, and 10. Maximal oxygen uptake (V̇o2max) and peak power output (POpeak) were also measured. There were significant and similar declines from pre- to post-RI test in RI15, RI30, and RI45 for IMVC (-23%; -25%; -25%, respectively; P < 0.05) and potentiated single twitch (-46%; -47%; -49%; P < 0.05), whereas voluntary activation did not change (-1%; -1%; 0%; P > 0.05). There were no RI condition effects, nor time × condition interaction for IMVC, potentiated single twitch and voluntary activation (all P > 0.05). V̇o2max was not different among RI15, RI30, and RI45 conditions (3.30, 3.29, and 3.26 L·min-1, respectively; P = 0.717), but POpeak was (272, 304, and 337 W, respectively; P < 0.001). Overall, performance fatigability profiles were similar between sexes after the RI tests and during recovery. In addition, during recovery, high-frequency doublets and single twitch recovered faster after RI30 and RI45 compared with RI15, regardless of sex (all P > 0.05 for sex differences). In conclusion, RI tests of different slopes that elicited similar V̇o2max but different POpeak did not affect the profile of performance fatigability at task failure in females and males.NEW & NOTEWORTHY It was unknown whether performance fatigability and its recovery are affected by different slopes in a ramp incremental (RI) test. It was also uncertain if females and males would respond differently. Performance fatigability was the same regardless of the RI slope adopted and the sex of the population, which was accompanied by similar maximal oxygen uptake but different power output achieved. The recovery of contractile function was similar between sexes but delayed after slower RI slopes.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the time course and amplitude of performance fatigability during cycling at intensities around the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) until task failure (TTF). METHODS: Ten females and 11 males were evaluated in eight visits: 1) ramp incremental test; 2-3) 30-min constant power output (PO) cycling for MLSS determination; and 4-8) cycling to TTF at PO relative to the MLSS of (i) -15%, (ii) -10 W, (iii) at MLSS, and (iv) +10 W, and (v) +15%. Performance fatigability was characterized by femoral nerve electrical stimulation of knee extensors at baseline; minutes 5, 10, 20, and 30; and TTF. Oxygen uptake, blood lactate concentration, muscle oxygen saturation, and perceived exertion were evaluated. RESULTS: Approximately 75% of the total performance fatigability occurred within 5 min of exercise, independently of exercise intensity, followed by a further change at minute 30. Contractile function declined more in males than females (all P < 0.05). At task failure, exercise duration declined from MLSS -15% to MLSS +15% (all P < 0.05), accompanied by a greater rate of decline after MLSS +15% and MLSS +10 compared with MLSS, MLSS -10 , and MLSS -15% for voluntary activation (-0.005 and -0.003 vs -0.002, -0.001 and -0.001%·min -1 , respectively) and contractile function (potentiated single twitch force, -0.013 and -0.009 vs -0.006, -0.004 and -0.004%·min -1 , respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Whereas the time course of performance fatigability responses was similar regardless of exercise intensity and sex, the total amplitude and rate of change were affected by the distinct metabolic disturbances around the MLSS, leading to different performance fatigability etiologies at task failure.

Muscle oxygen uptake (V̇o2m) evaluated from changes in the near-infrared spectroscopy oxygen desaturation slope during a 5-s arterial blood flow occlusion has been proposed as an estimation of the actual V̇o2m. However, its correspondence with pulmonary oxygen uptake (V̇o2p) during exercise remains unknown. This study investigated the V̇o2m and V̇o2p relationship in females and males in response to prolonged constant-load cycling exercise at different intensities. Eighteen participants (8 females) visited the laboratory on six occasions: 1) ramp incremental test; 2 and 3) 30-min constant power output (constant-PO) exercise bout to determine the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS); 4-6) constant-PO exercise bouts to task failure at i) 15% below MLSS (MLSS-15%); ii) MLSS; and iii) 15% above MLSS (MLSS+15%). V̇o2m was estimated at baseline, at min 5, min 10, min 20, min 30, and at task failure. V̇o2p was continuously recorded during the constant-PO bouts. V̇o2p and V̇o2m significantly increased from min 5 to min 30 in MLSS condition (all P values <0.05) and from min 5 to min 10 in MLSS+15% condition (all P < 0.05). V̇o2p and V̇o2m were correlated (r2adj range of 0.70-0.98, all P < 0.001) among exercise intensities in both females and males. In addition, both variables were also correlated when expressed as percent (r2adj range of 0.52-0.77, all P < 0.001). V̇o2p and V̇o2m responses were similar when exercising below, at, and above the MLSS independently of sex. Most importantly, V̇o2p and V̇o2m were correlated regardless the exercise intensity and sex of the participants.NEW & NOTEWORTHY It was unknown if muscle oxygen uptake (V̇o2m) derived from near-infrared spectroscopy oxygen desaturation slope during 5-s blood flow occlusion, was similar to the pulmonary oxygen uptake (V̇o2p) across time and among different exercise intensities. We showed that 1) V̇o2m and V̇o2p had similar responses across time and among intensities below, at, and above the maximal lactate steady state; 2) both variables were strongly correlated; and 3) these observations were consistent between females and males.

The current study analysed the effect of distinct pacing profiles (i.e. U, J, and inverted J) in the perceptual responses and neuromuscular fatigue (NMF) development following a 4-km cycling time trial (TT). Twenty-one cyclists with similar training status were allocated into three different groups based on their pacing profile spontaneously adopted during TT. Rating of perceived exertion (RPE), oxygen uptake (⩒O2) and heart rate (HR) were continuously recorded. NMF was assessed by using isometric maximal voluntary contractions (IMVC), while the central [i.e. voluntary activation (VA)] and peripheral fatigue of knee extensors [i.e. peak torque of potentiated twitches (TwPt)] were evaluated using electrically evoked contractions performed pre and 2 min after the TT. TT performance was not different amongst pacing profiles (U = 377 ± 20 s; J = 392 ± 23 s; J-i = 381 ± 20 s) (all P > 0.05). RPE, ⩒O2 and HR increased similarly throughout the TT regardless the pacing strategy (all P > 0.05). Similarly, IMVC (U = -9.9 ± 8.8; J = -9.6 ± 4.5%; J-i = -13.8 ± 11.3%), VA (U = -2.3 ± 1.7%; J = -5.4 ± 2.2%; J-i = -6.4 ± 4.5%) and TwPt (U = -32.5 ± 12.0%; J = -29.5 ± 8.0%; J-i = -33.6 ± 13.6%) were similar amongst pacing profiles (all P > 0.05). Therefore, endurance athletes with similar training status showed the same perceived responses and NMF development regardless the pacing profile spontaneously adopted. It was suggested that these responses occurred in order to preserve a similar rate of change in systemic responses (i.e. RPE, ⩒O2 and HR) and NMF development, ultimately resulting in same TT performance. HighlightsDifferent pacing profiles resulted in the same performance in a 4-km cycling time trial.The similar performance might be due to achievement of the same sensory tolerance limit.There was no difference for perceptual, metabolic and neuromuscular fatigue responses.

Neuromuscular fatigue (NMF) and exercise performance are affected by exercise intensity and sex differences. However, whether slight changes in power output (PO) below and above the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) impact NMF and subsequent performance (time to task failure, TTF) is unknown. This study compared NMF and TTF in females and males in response to exercise performed at MLSS, 10 W below (MLSS-10) and above (MLSS+10). Twenty participants (9 females) performed three 30-min constant-PO exercise bouts followed (1-min delay) by a TTF at 80% of the peak-PO. NMF was characterized by isometric maximal voluntary contractions (IMVC) and femoral nerve electrical stimulation of knee extensors [e.g., peak torque of potentiated high-frequency (Db100) and single twitch (TwPt)] before and immediately after the constant-PO and TTF bouts. IMVC declined less after MLSS-10 (-18 ± 10%) compared to MLSS (-26 ± 14%) and MLSS+10 (-31 ± 11%; all P < 0.05), and the Db100 decline was greater after MLSS+10 (-24 ± 14%) compared to the other intensities (MLSS-10: -15 ± 9%; MLSS: -18 ± 11%; all P < 0.05). Females showed smaller reductions, relative to baseline, in IMVC and TwPt compared to males after constant-PO bouts (all P < 0.05), this difference being not dependent on intensity. TTF was negatively impacted by increasing the PO in the constant-PO (P < 0.001), with no differences in end-exercise NMF (P > 0.05). Slight manipulations in PO around MLSS elicited great changes in the reduction of maximal voluntary force and impairments in contractile function. Although NMF was lower in females compared to males, the changes in PO around the MLSS impacted both sexes similarly.NEW & NOTEWORTHY It is unknown whether minimum changes in power output (PO) below and above the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) affect neuromuscular fatigue (NMF) development in females and males. The present data showed that a decrease or increase of 10 W in PO in relation to MLSS elicited lower and greater impairments in contractile function, respectively. Even though females had less of an overall decline in NMF than males, similar exercise intensity-dependent response occurred independently of sex.

The present study analyzed the effects of local ischemia during endurance exercise on neuromuscular fatigue (NMF). Nine cyclists performed, in a counterbalanced order, two separate 4-km cycling time trials (TT) with (ISCH) or without (CONTR) induced local ischemia. NMF was characterized by using isometric maximal voluntary contractions (IMVC), whereas central [voluntary activation (VA)] and peripheral fatigue [peak torque of potentiated twitch (TwPt)] of knee extensors were evaluated using electrically evoked contractions performed before (PRE) and 1 min after (POST) the TT. Electromyographic activity (EMG), power output (PO), oxygen uptake (V̇o2), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were also recorded. The decrease in IMVC (-15 ± 9% vs. -10 ± 8%, P = 0.66), VA (-4 ± 3% vs. -3 ± 3%, P = 0.46), and TwPt (-16 ± 7% vs. -19 ± 14%, P = 0.67) was similar in ISCH and CONTR. Endurance performance was drastically reduced in ISCH condition (512 ± 29 s) compared with CONTR (386 ± 17 s) (P < 0.001), which was accompanied by lower EMG, PO, and V̇o2 responses (all P < 0.05). RPE was greater in ISCH compared with CONTR (P < 0.05), but the rate of change was similar throughout the TT (8.19 ± 2.59 vs. 7.81 ± 2.01 RPE.% of total time-1, P > 0.05). These results indicate that similar end-exercise NMF levels were accompanied by impaired endurance performance in ISCH compared with CONTR. These novel findings suggest that the local reduced oxygen availability affected the afferent feedback signals to the central nervous system, ultimately increasing perceived effort and reducing muscle activity and exercise intensity to avoid surpassing a sensory tolerance limit before the finish line.

RESUMO

Performance in self-paced endurance exercises results from continuous fatigue symptom management. While it is suggested that perceived responses and neuromuscular fatigue development may determine variations in exercise intensity, it is uncertain how these fatigue components interact throughout the task. To address the fatigue development in self-paced endurance exercises, the following topics were addressed in the present review: (1) fatigue development during constant-load vs. self-paced endurance exercises; (2) central and peripheral fatigue and perceived exertion interconnections throughout the self-paced endurance exercises; and (3) future directions and recommendations. Based on the available literature, it is suggested (1) the work rate variations during a self-paced endurance exercise result in transitions between exercise intensity domains, directly impacting the end-exercise central and peripheral fatigue level when compared to constant-load exercise mode; (2) central and peripheral fatigue, as well as perceived exertion response contribute to exercise intensity regulation at the different stages of the trial. It seems that while neuromuscular fatigue development might be relevant at beginning of the trial, the perceived exertion might interfere in the remaining parts to achieve maximal values only at the finish line; (3) future studies should focus on the mechanisms underpinning fatigue components interactions throughout the task and its influence on exercise intensity variations.

Purpose: This study investigated the effects of previous exhaustive upper body exercise on performance and neuromuscular fatigue following a 4-km cycling time-trial (4-km TT). Methods: Eight recreational cyclists performed a 4-km TT with (ARMPRE) or without (CONTR) a previous arm-crank maximal incremental test. In each experimental session, neuromuscular fatigue was evaluated with a series of electrically evoked and maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVC). Oxygen uptake ( V ˙ O2), heart rate, electromyographic muscle activity (EMGRMS) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were also recorded throughout the 4-km TT. Results: The average power output during the 4-km TT was reduced (P = .027) for the ARMPRE (299 ± 59 W) group, compared with CONTR (310 ± 59 W) and overall performance in 4-km TT was impaired (P = .021) in ARMPRE (382 ± 28 s) compared with CONTR (376 ± 27 s). The decrease observed in MVC (P = .033) and potentiated peak twitch force (P = .004) at post-TT were similar between the ARMPRE and CONTR conditions (P = .739 and P = .493, respectively). There was no (P = .619) change in voluntary activation at post-TT between conditions. V ˙ O2, EMGRMS and RPE measured throughout the 4-km TT were not significantly different between the conditions (P = .558, P = .558 and P = .940, respectively). The rate of RPE change relative to power output average and heart rate was higher (P = .030 and P = .013, respectively) in ARMPRE (0.031 ± 0.018 AU/W and 168 ± 8 bpm) than CONTR (0.022 ± 0.010 AU/W and 161 ± 7 bpm). Conclusion: These results suggest that impaired performance in ARMPRE was mostly due to pronounced perception of effort rather than neuromuscular fatigue.

During ramp-incremental (RI) exercise to exhaustion, the near-infrared spectroscopy-derived deoxygenated hemoglobin ([HHb]) signal in the vastus lateralis muscle shows a linear increase up to a point at which a plateau-like response is manifested ([HHb]bp). This study investigated if 1) the [HHb]bp is affected by different fractions of inspired O2 (FIO2) [hypoxia (16%; HYPO); normoxia (21%; NORM); hyperoxia (30%; HYPER)]; and 2) an abrupt change to hyperoxic-inspired gas just before the occurrence of the [HHb]bp (HYPERSWITCH) would affect the [HHb] plateau-like response. Ten physically active male participants reported to the laboratory on four separate occasions to perform an RI test to exhaustion in NORM, HYPO, and HYPER and an RI test to exhaustion with an abrupt increase in FIO2 (30%; HYPERSWITCH) 15 W before the power output (PO) associated with [HHb]bp in normoxia. PO, [HHb], tissue O2 (StO2), and pulse O2 saturation (SpO2) were recorded continuously. Peak PO was significantly lower in HYPO (290 ± 21 W) and higher in HYPER (321 ± 22 W) and HYPERSWITCH (320 ± 19 W) compared with NORM (311 ± 18 W). The PO associated with [HHb]bp was not different between NORM and HYPER (246 ± 23 vs. 247 ± 24 W), but it was lower in HYPO (198 ± 31 W) than NORM and HYPER. The PO associated with the [HHb]bp in HYPERSWITCH (240 ± 23) was not different compared with NORM. HYPER and HYPERSWITCH resulted in greater StO2 and SpO2 compared with NORM. These results suggest that the [HHb]bp response is not dependent of O2 driving pressure and that other physiological mechanisms might determine its occurrence.

Pacing during a high-intensity cycling time trial (TT) appears to prevent premature task failure, but the performance fatigability during a self-paced exercise is currently unknown. Therefore, the current study characterized the time course of performance fatigability during a 4-km TT. Eleven male cyclists performed three separated TTs in a crossover, counterbalanced design. The TTs lasted until the end of the fast-start (FS; 600 ± 205 m), even-pace (EP; 3,600 ± 190 m), and end-spurt (ES; 4,000 m) phases. Performance fatigability was characterized by using isometric maximal voluntary contractions (IMVCs), whereas the muscle activation [i.e., voluntary activation (VA)] and contractile function of knee extensors [e.g., peak torque of potentiated twitches (TwPt)] were evaluated using electrically evoked contractions performed before and 1 min after each specific part of the trial. Gas exchange, power output (PO), and electromyographic activity (EMG) were also recorded. EMG/PO showed an abrupt increase followed by a continuous decrease toward the end of FS, resulting in a drop in IMVC (-12%), VA (-8%), and TwPt (-23%). EMG/PO was stable during EP, with no additional drop on IMVC, VA, or TwPt (-12%, -6%, and -22%, respectively). EMG/PO increased abruptly during the ES, but there was no change in IMVCs, VA, or TwPt (-13%, -8%, and -26%, respectively). These findings demonstrate that the performance fatigability during a self-paced exercise is characterized by a large drop in contractile function and muscle activation at the beginning of the trial (i.e., FS), without additional change during the middle and end phases (i.e., EP and ES).NEW & NOTEWORTHY The time course of performance fatigability throughout a self-paced exercise is currently unknown. The results showed that a large amount of muscle activation and contractile function impairments are attained early on a self-paced exercise (first ∼15% of the total time trial distance) and maintained throughout the test. This novel finding characterizes the performance fatigability from a contractile function and muscle activation perspective, which brings new insights for future studies focused on real-world exercise training and competition.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to verify the acute and prolonged effects of stretch-shortening cycle exercise (SSC) on performance and neuromuscular function following a 4-km cycling time trial (4-km TT). METHODS: On separate days, individuals performed a 4-km TT without any previous exercise (CON), immediately (ACUTE) and 48 h after (PROL) SSC protocol (i.e., 100-drop jumps). Neuromuscular function was measured at baseline SSC (baseline), before (pre-TT) and after (post-TT) 4-km TT. Muscle soreness and inflammatory responses also were assessed. RESULTS: The endurance performance was impaired in both ACUTE (- 2.3 ± 1.8%) and PROL (- 1.8 ± 2.4%) compared with CON. The SSC protocol caused also an acute reduction in neuromuscular function, with a greater decrease in potentiated quadriceps twitch-force (Qtw.pot - 49 ± 16%) and voluntary activation (VA - 6.5 ± 7%) compared for CON and PROL at pre-TT. The neuromuscular function was fully recovered 48 h after SSC protocol. Muscle soreness and IL-10 were elevated only 48 h after SSC protocol. At post-TT, Qtw.pot remained lower in ACUTE (- 52 ± 14%) compared to CON (- 29 ± 7%) and PROL (- 31 ± 16%). CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate that impairment in endurance performance induced by prior SSC protocol was mediated by two distinct mechanisms, where the acute impairment was related to an exacerbated degree of peripheral and central fatigue, and the prolonged impairment was due to elevated perceived muscle soreness.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mental fatigue, characterized by a subjective feeling of tiredness, on the development of neuromuscular fatigue during a 4-km cycling time trial (4-km TT). METHODS: Eight recreationally trained male cyclists performed a 4-km TT after either performing a prolonged cognitive task (mental fatigue) or after viewing emotionally neutral documentaries (control). The neuromuscular function of the knee extensors was assessed using electrical nerve stimulation at baseline, before (pre-TT), and after (post-TT) the 4-km TT. Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and physiological variables were periodically measured during 4-km TT. RESULTS: Subjective ratings of fatigue increased significantly only after a prolonged cognitive task (P = 0.022). Neuromuscular function at baseline was similar between conditions and remained unchanged at pre-TT. Time to complete the 4-km TT was similar between control (376 ± 27 s) and mental fatigue (376 ± 26 s). There was no significant difference between conditions for RPE, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and HR throughout the exercise. The 4-km TT-induced similar decrease (from baseline to post-TT) in maximal voluntary contraction (mental fatigue - 11 ± 10%, control - 16 ± 12%), twitch force (mental fatigue - 26 ± 16%, control - 24 ± 17%), and voluntary activation (mental fatigue - 5 ± 7%, control - 3 ± 2%) for both conditions. CONCLUSION: Mental fatigue induced by prolonged cognitive task does not impair performance nor alter the degree of central and peripheral fatigue development during self-paced exercise in recreationally trained cyclists.

Resumo O presente estudo teve como objetivo verificar se a incidência do platô está relacionada com a capacidade anaeróbia. Para tanto, nove indivíduos fisicamente ativos (idade: 23 ± 4 anos; massa corporal: 72,4 ± 8,2 kg; estatura: 176,4 ± 6,8 cm; VO2max: 41,3 ± 5,7 ml.kg-1.min-1) participaram do presente estudo. Eles foram submetidos aos seguintes testes, realizados em cicloergômetro: a) um teste incremental máximo para a determinação do VO2max; b) seis testes submáximos para determinar a demanda supramáxima de O2; c) um teste supramáximo para a determinação do déficit máximo acumulado de oxigênio (MAOD). O platô foi caracterizado quando a diferença do VO2 entre os dois últimos estágios do teste incremental foi ≤ 2,1 ml.kg-1.min-1. Foi observada uma correlação inversa, porém não significante, entre e o MAOD e o platô do VO2 (r = -0,61; > 0,05). Dessa forma, parece que a capacidade anaeróbia não é fator decisivo para determinar a incidência de platô no VO2 em indivíduos fisicamente ativos.(AU)


Abstract The present study aimed to verify if the incidence of plateau is associated with anaerobic capacity. Therefore, nine physically active male (age: 23 ± 4 yr; body mass: 72.4 ± 8.2 kg; height: 176.4 ± 6.8 cm; VO2max: 41.3 ± 5.7 ml.kg-1.min-1) participated in the present study. The subjects in a cycle ergometer the following tests: a) maximum incremental test to determination of VO2max; b) six submaximal tests for determination of supra maximum demand of O2; c) supra maximum test for maximum accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) determination. The plateau was identified when the difference in the VO2 in the last two stages of incremental test was ≤ 2.1 ml.kg-1.min-1. It was observed an inverse correlation, although no significant, between MAOD and VO2 plateau (r = -0,61; > 0,05). Thus, it appears that anaerobic capacity is not a decisive factor for determining the incidence of VO2 plateau in physically active individuals.(AU)

The current investigation aimed to develop a valid specific field test to evaluate anaerobic physical performance in Aerobic Gymnastics athletes. We first designed the Specific Aerobic Gymnast Anaerobic Test (SAGAT), which included gymnastics-specific elements performed in maximal repeated sprint fashion, with a total duration of 80-90 s. In order to validate the SAGAT, three independent sub-studies were performed to evaluate the concurrent validity (Study I, n=8), the reliability (Study II, n=10) and the sensitivity (Study III, n=30) of the test in elite female athletes. In Study I, a positive correlation was shown between lower-body Wingate test and SAGAT performance (Mean power: p = 0.03, r = -0.69, CI: -0.94 to 0.03 and Peak power: p = 0.02, r = -0.72, CI: -0.95 to -0.04) and between upper-body Wingate test and SAGAT performance (Mean power: p = 0.03, r = -0.67, CI: -0.94 to 0.02 and Peak power: p = 0.03, r = -0.69, CI: -0.94 to 0.03). Additionally, plasma lactate was similarly increased in response to SAGAT (p = 0.002), lower-body Wingate Test (p = 0.021) and a simulated competition (p = 0.007). In Study II, no differences were found between the time to complete the SAGAT in repeated trials (p = 0.84; Cohen's d effect size = 0.09; ICC = 0.97, CI: 0.89 to 0.99; MDC95 = 0.12 s). Finally, in Study III the time to complete the SAGAT was significantly lower during the competition cycle when compared to the period before the preparatory cycle (p < 0.001), showing an improvement in SAGAT performance after a specific Aerobic Gymnastics training period. Taken together, these data have demonstrated that SAGAT is a specific, reliable and sensitive measurement of specific anaerobic performance in elite female Aerobic Gymnastics, presenting great potential to be largely applied in training settings.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da suplementação de creatina associada ou não ao treinamento de força sobre a peroxidação lipídica em mulheres idosas. Foi conduzido um estudo clínico, randomizado, duplo-cego e controlado por placebo, no qual mulheres idosas foram randomizadas para compor quatro grupos: 1) suplementação com placebo (PL; n = 10); 2) suplementação com creatina (CR; n = 10); 3) suplementação com placebo associado ao treinamento de força (PL+TR; n = 6); e 4) suplementação com creatina associado ao treinamento de força (CR+TR; n = 8). Antes (PRE) e após 24 semanas (POS) de intervenção, foram coletadas amostras de sangue para posterior análise das concentrações plasmáticas de hidroperóxidos lipídicos por espectrofotometria. Nenhuma diferença estatística foi observada na concentração de hidroperóxidos lipídicos entre os grupos (PL: PRE = 48,7 ± 36,9; POS = 29,3 ± 18,8; delta = -13,0 ± 26,8; CR: PRE = 51,0 ± 46,0; POS = 54,2 ± 51,6; delta = -8,6 ± 30,2; PL+TR: PRE = 33,0 ± 11,2; POS = 47,3 ± 31,6; Δ = 14,3 ± 39,2; CR+TR: PRE = 18,5 ± 10,1; POS = 28,1 ± 17,9; delta = 9,7 ± 16,4 pmol.mg-1 de proteína total; p = 0,17). A suplementação de creatina associada ou não ao treinamento de força não afetou a peroxidação lipídica, um importante marcador de estresse oxidativo no plasma, em mulheres idosas.


The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of creatine supplementation associated or not with strength training upon lipid peroxidation in older women. This was a clinical, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Older women were randomly allocated into four groups: 1) placebo supplementation (PL, n = 10), 2) creatine supplementation (CR; n = 10), 3) placebo supplementation associated with strength training (PL + RT, n = 6) and 4) creatine supplementation associated with strength training (CR + RT, n = 8). Before (PRE) and after 24 weeks (POST), blood samples were collected to measure lipid hydroperoxides concentration by spectrophotometry. No statistical difference was observed on the lipid hydroperoxides concentration between groups (PL: PRE = 48.7 ± 36.9; POST = 29.3 ± 18.8; Δ = -13.0 ± 26.8; CR : PRE = 51.0 ± 46.0; POST = 54.2 ± 51.6; Δ = -8.6 ± 30.2; + PL TR: PRE = 33.0 ± 11.2; POST = 47.3 ± 31.6, Δ = 14.3 ± 39.2; CR + TR: PRE = 18.5 ± 10.1; POST = 28.1 ± 17.9, Δ = 9.7 ± 16.4 pmol.mg-1 of total protein, p = 0.17). Creatine supplementation associated or not with strength training did not affect the lipid peroxidation, an important plasmatic marker of oxidative stress, in elderly women.
