RESUMO

This study aimed to compare dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) effects on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms, quality of life (QOL), anxiety and depression among patients with IBS. Eighty three eligible patients with a Rome- IV diagnosis were randomly allocated in DBT, MBSR, ACT, and control groups (n = 22 per group). All the patients were evaluated for IBS symptoms by IBS Severity Scoring System (IBS-SSS), QOL by irritable bowel syndrome quality of life (IBS-QOL), anxiety by Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and depression by Beck Depression Inventory- II (BDI-II) on the studied groups at the time of their inclusion in the study and 8 weeks after it. Each of the intervention groups took part in 8 group sessions. Conversely, the control group were evaluated without any intervention. 54 male and 29 female in 4 groups completed the study: DBT (n = 20), MBSR (n = 19), ACT (n = 22), and control groups (n = 22). The results showed significant differences between the groups based on the variables of the IBS-SSS, IBS-QOL, BAI and BDI-II (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the ACT intervention had considerably lower levels of IBS symptoms, anxiety, and depression compared to the other groups; also, the significant impacts of the QOL variable showed the higher scores of the ACT compared to the treatment groups. The therapies could not be applied to other groups of people. Other shortcomings were the absence of a follow-up strategy. This research offers preliminary evidence that ACT is more successful than other therapy groups in reducing IBS symptoms, anxiety and sadness, and improving QOL in IBS patients.

Working memory is the cognitive capability to maintain and process information over short periods. Behavioral and computational studies have shown that visual information is associated with working memory performance. However, the underlying neural correlates remain unknown. To identify how visual information affects working memory performance, we conducted behavioral experiments in pigeons (Columba livia) and single unit recordings in the avian prefrontal analog, the nidopallium caudolaterale (NCL). Complex pictures featuring luminance, spatial and color information, were associated with higher working memory performance compared to uniform gray pictures in conjunction with distinct neural coding patterns. For complex pictures, we found a multiplexed neuronal code displaying visual and value-related features that switched to a representation of the upcoming choice during a delay period. When processing gray stimuli, NCL neurons did not multiplex and exclusively represented the choice already during stimulus presentation and throughout the delay period. The prolonged representation possibly resulted in a decay of the memory trace ultimately leading to a decrease in performance. In conclusion, we found that high stimulus complexity is associated with neuronal multiplexing of the working memory representation possibly allowing a facilitated read-out of the neural code resulting in enhancement of working memory performance.

Conservation of the environment has taken a prime position among areas of concern for managers and practitioners worldwide. This study aims to provide a bi-level mathematical model for municipal waste collection considering the sustainability approach. The mathematical model with conflicting objects was proposed at the upper level of the model of maximizing government revenue from waste recycling and at the lower level of minimizing waste collection and recycling costs, which had stochastic parameters and was scenario based. A case study was conducted in the Saveh processing site (Iran). Due to the complexity of the bi-level model, the KKT approach was adopted to unify the model. Finally, the relevant calculations were performed based on actual information. The results of the problem in the case study showed the efficiency of the proposed method. Several computational analyses randomly generated different waste recycling rates and obtained significant management results.

Salinity seriously constrains growth and fertility of rice worldwide. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play crucial roles in plant abiotic stress response. However, salt responsive lncRNAs are poorly understood in rice. Herein, salt responsive lncRNAs (DE-lncRNAs) were identified in FL478 (salt tolerant) compared to its susceptible parent (IR29) using RNA-seq in root tissues at seedling stage. In FL478 and IR29, 8724 and 9235 transcripts with length of > 200 bp were nominated as potential lncRNAs, respectively. Rigorous filtering left four (in FL478) and nine (in IR29) DE-lncRNAs with only 2 DE-lncRNAs in common. ATAC-seq data showed that the genomic regions of all four lncRNAs in FL478 and 6/9 in IR29 are significantly accessible for transcription. Weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) revealed that lncRNA.2-FL was highly correlated with 173 mRNAs as trans-targets and a gene encoding pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) protein was predicted as cis-target of lncRNA.2-FL. In silico mutagenesis analysis proposed the same transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) in vicinity of the trans- and cis-regulatory target genes of lncRNA.2-FL, which significantly affect their transcription start site (TSS). This study provides new insights into involvement of the DE-lncRNAs in rice response to salt stress. Among them, lncRNA.2-FL may play a significant regulatory role in the salt stress tolerance of FL478.

Discriminating between object categories (e.g., conspecifics, food, potential predators) is a critical function of the primate and bird visual systems. We examined whether a similar hierarchical organization in the ventral stream that operates for processing faces in monkeys also exists in the avian visual system. We performed electrophysiological recordings from the pigeon Wulst of the thalamofugal pathway, in addition to the entopallium (ENTO) and mesopallium ventrolaterale (MVL) of the tectofugal pathway, while pigeons viewed images of faces, scrambled controls, and sine gratings. A greater proportion of MVL neurons fired to the stimuli, and linear discriminant analysis revealed that the population response of MVL neurons distinguished between the stimuli with greater capacity than ENTO and Wulst neurons. While MVL neurons displayed the greatest response selectivity, in contrast to the primate system no neurons were strongly face-selective and some responded best to the scrambled images. These findings suggest that MVL is primarily involved in processing the local features of images, much like the early visual cortex.

The outbreak of the emerging SARS-CoV-2 virus has highlighted the challenges of detecting viral infections, especially in resource-limited settings. The SARS-CoV-2 virus transmission chain is interrupted when screening and diagnosis can be performed on a large scale by identifying asymptomatic or moderately symptomatic patients. Diagnosis of COVID-19 with reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) has been limited due to inadequate access to complex, expensive equipment and reagents, which has impeded efforts to reduce the spread of virus transmission. Recently, the development of several diagnostic platforms based on the CRISPR-Cas system has reduced the dependence on RT-PCR. The first CRISPR-based diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2 was recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The biosensing systems have several important features that make them suitable for point-of-care tests, including the speed of design and synthesis of each platform in less than a few days, an assay time of 1-2 h, and the cost of materials and reagents less than one dollar per test. The HUDSON-SHERLOCK and STOPCovid biosensing systems, as field-deployable and rapid diagnostic tests, can detect low-copy viruses in body fluids without nucleic acid extraction and with minimal equipment. In addition, Cas13-based treatment strategies could potentially be an effective antiviral strategy for the prevention and treatment of emerging pandemic viruses such as SARS-CoV-2. In this review, we describe recent advances in CRISPR-based diagnostic platforms with an emphasis on their use in the rapid diagnosis and potential treatment of COVID-19.

Objetivo: Estudos demostraram que a zircônia monolítica um dos materiais restauradores desenvolvidos recentemente, resolveu vários problemas de restauração de zircônia. Portanto, a precisão marginal e o ajuste interno são necessários para o sucesso clinico e para a qualidade da restauração, e o espaço do cimento pode influenciar o ajuste marginal. Assim, o presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar os efeitos da espessura do cimento e o tipo de restauração na discrepância marginal. Material e métodos: foram usadas para fabricação de coroa total. Dois tipos de materiais incluindo Zirconia monolítica (Zolid) e Sintron foram usadas para produzir a coroa total. As amostras de cada grupo foram digitalizadas em laboratório dentário por um scanner 3D, projetadas e acessadas usando CAD-CAM. As amostras foram divididas em quatro grupos de cinco com espaço de 30 e 50 mícrons de cimento. Para avaliar a discrepância marginal, as coroas foram colocadas em seus respectivos dentes sem o uso de qualquer intermediário e examinados em micro-CT. Os dados foram avaliados pelo software SPSS. Resultados: Descobriu-se que a discrepância marginal do Sintron é maior que a discrepância da zircônia monolítica. Na verdade, a zircônia monolítica com espaço de 50 µm de cimento exibiu uma menor discrepância marginal, e o espaço de cimento do Sintron não influenciou significantemente na discrepância marginal. Conclusão: Concluiu-se que os tipos de material e o espaço do cimento influencia na discrepância marginal da restauração construída pelo fluxo digital (AU)


Objective: Studies demonstrated that as one of then ewly developed restorative materials, monolithic zirconia resolved several issues of zirconia restoration. Therefore, marginal accuracy and internal fit are necessary for clinical success and quality of restorations, and cement space may influence the marginal fit. Thus, the present research aimed to investigate the effects of the cement thickness and kind of restoration on the marginal discrepancy. Material and methods: In this study, 20 maxillary left first molars, prepared by DRSK Co., were used to fabricate a full crown. Two types of material included monolithic zirconia (Zolid) and Sintron were used to make a full crown. Samples from each group were scanned by dental laboratory 3D scanner and designed and processed using CAD-CAM. The samples were divided into four groups of five with 30-and 50- µm cement spaces. In order to assess the vertical marginal discrepancy, the crowns were fittedon their respective teeth without using any mediator and examined by a micro-CT scanner. Data were analyzed by SPSS software. Results: It has been found that marginal discrepancy in Sintron is higher than the discrepancy of monolithic zirconia. In fact, monolithic zirconia with 50-micron cement space exhibited the least marginal discrepancy and the cement space in Sintron did not significantly influence the marginal discrepancy. Conclusion: It has been concluded that the material kinds and cement space influence the restoration marginal discrepancy constructed by digital workflow (AU)

INTRODUCTION: Sustained Attention (SA) failure is one of the main characteristics of Specific Learning Disorders (SLD). Recent studies have reported a positive effect of Cognitive Rehabilitation (CR) and Neurofeedback (NFB) on SA in SLD. Thus, the effectiveness of CR and NFB is well understood. This preliminary study aimed to compare the effects of CR and NFB on SA among the elementary school students with SLD, using a randomized controlled clinical trial. METHODS: In this preliminary randomized controlled clinical trial, 53 eligible students with SLD (based on DSM-5) within the age range of 7 to 10 years were randomly assigned in the NFB (n=18), CR (n=18), and control group (n=17). All the participants were evaluated for SA using the Continuous Performance Test (CPT), at the time of entry to the study, and one month later. The intervention groups participated in 20 sessions of CR and 20 sessions of NFB, while the control group was evaluated without any intervention. RESULTS: A total number of 24 boys and 36 girls in four groups (n=15) completed the study. The Mean±SD age of the participants in the CR, NFB, and control groups were 8.66±1.48 years, 8.40±1.73 years, and 8.53±1.63 years, respectively. Results showed a significant difference in the variables of the CPT between the study groups (P<0.05). Also, the CPT scores of the CR group were higher than that of the NFB group (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: This study supports that CR is more effective than NFB on SA in students with SLD.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) for those patients with dentofacial deformities, who underwent orthognathic surgery, and the control group. It also identified whether orthognathic surgery had a positive or negative impact on TMD symptoms by comparing TMD patients, who underwent orthognathic surgery, and people did not experience this surgery. Finally, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of orthognathic surgery on the pre-existing TMDs in malocclusion patients. Material and Methods: MEDLINE, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, ISI, google scholar have been utilized as the electronic databases for systematically reviewing the literature between 2001 and February 2019. Inclusion criteria were undergoing orthognathic surgery, patients with/without pre-existing TMDs, and physical disabilities. Results: A total of 669 abstracts and titles with potential relevance have been identified in the course of the manual and electronic searches. It has been found that five studies met our inclusion criteria for a systematic review. Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) before orthognathic surgery in comparison to the controls (RR=0.02; 95% CI -0.08-0.13) and heterogeneity among the papers has been I2 = 42.86% (p=0.64). Conclusion: Malocclusion by orthognathic and orthodontics surgeries had a considerable rate of TMD compared to the controls.

Toxic heavy metals and organic pollutants simultaneously exist in the wastewater of some industries. This study explores reduction of toxic divalent nickel ions, from either nitrate or sulfate salts, coupled with naphthalene (NA) degradation using titania photocatalyst in an efficient photo-sono reactor. A synergism appears when reduction and degradation treatments occur simultaneously in the media. With initial concentrations of [Ni(II)]0 = 5 mg/L and [NA]0 = 10 mg/L, under dominant mild conditions, removal efficiencies of 54.5% and 56.6% were obtained for Ni(II) and NA, respectively, when nickel nitrate was used. These efficiencies were enhanced to 59.2% and 57.5%, respectively, with nickel sulfate, all after 90 min operation. For evaluating the mechanism of reactions, reactive oxygen species analysis on solutions as well as Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analyses on the titania nanoparticles, before and after usage, was performed. The reaction kinetics was also followed for individual species in the mixed solution and, accordingly, the energy consumption was evaluated for one order of magnitude decrease in pollutant concentration. The high performance of the used method was revealed in comparison to the similar reported reduction/degradation processes.

Recognizing and categorizing visual stimuli are cognitive functions vital for survival, and an important feature of visual systems in primates as well as in birds. Visual stimuli are processed along the ventral visual pathway. At every stage in the hierarchy, neurons respond selectively to more complex features, transforming the population representation of the stimuli. It is therefore easier to read-out category information in higher visual areas. While explicit category representations have been observed in the primate brain, less is known on equivalent processes in the avian brain. Even though their brain anatomies are radically different, it has been hypothesized that visual object representations are comparable across mammals and birds. In the present study, we investigated category representations in the pigeon visual forebrain using recordings from single cells responding to photographs of real-world objects. Using a linear classifier, we found that the population activity in the visual associative area mesopallium ventrolaterale (MVL) distinguishes between animate and inanimate objects, although this distinction is not required by the task. By contrast, a population of cells in the entopallium, a region that is lower in the hierarchy of visual areas and that is related to the primate extrastriate cortex, lacked this information. A model that pools responses of simple cells, which function as edge detectors, can account for the animate vs. inanimate categorization in the MVL, but performance in the model is based on different features than in MVL. Therefore, processing in MVL cells is very likely more abstract than simple computations on the output of edge detectors.

Specific learning disorder (SLD) can occur along with the problems of attention performance and be complicated by them. Recent studies have reported the positive effects of cognitive rehabilitation (CR) and neurofeedback (NFB) on sustained attention (SA) in SLD. Nevertheless, it has not yet been determinedwhat kind of treatment may be the most appropriate option for this disorder in terms of the different functions of cognitive status, especially SA. This preliminary study aimed to compare CR and NFB effects on SA among elementary school students with SLD using a randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT). Fifty- three eligible students with a DSM-5 SLD diagnosis, aged 7-10, were randomly allocated in NFB (n = 18), CR (n = 18), and control groups (n = 17). All the participants were evaluated for SA by performing the continuous performance test (CPT) on the studied groups at the time of their inclusion in the study and 7 weeks after it. The intervention groups took part in 20 sessions of CR and 20 sessions of NFB. Conversely, the untreated group were evaluated without any intervention.15 boys and 30 girls in 3 groups completed the study (n = 15 per group). The mean and standard deviation of participants' age were (8.66 ± 1.48) years, (8.40 ± 1.73) years and (8.53 ± 1.63) years in CR, NFB and untreated groups, respectively. The results showed significant differences between the groups based on the variables of the CPT test (p < 0.05). Also, the significant effects of the variables represented the higher scores of the CR compared to the NFB group (p < 0.001). This study provides einitial evidence that CR is more effective than NFB on SA improvement among students with SLD.

While grid cells in the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) of rodents have multiple, regularly arranged firing fields, place cells in the cornu ammonis (CA) regions of the hippocampus mostly have single spatial firing fields. Since there are extensive projections from MEC to the CA regions, many models have suggested that a feedforward network can transform grid cell firing into robust place cell firing. However, these models generate place fields that are consistently too small compared to those recorded in experiments. Here, we argue that it is implausible that grid cell activity alone can be transformed into place cells with robust place fields of realistic size in a feedforward network. We propose two solutions to this problem. Firstly, weakly spatially modulated cells, which are abundant throughout EC, provide input to downstream place cells along with grid cells. This simple model reproduces many place cell characteristics as well as results from lesion studies. Secondly, the recurrent connections between place cells in the CA3 network generate robust and realistic place fields. Both mechanisms could work in parallel in the hippocampal formation and this redundancy might account for the robustness of place cell responses to a range of disruptions of the hippocampal circuitry.

BACKGROUND: Perineal pain is a major morbidity in the first few days after delivery. This study aimed to investigate the effect of dry cupping therapy and acupressure at BL23 point on the intensity of postpartum perineal pain based on the short-form of McGill pain questionnaire (SMPQ). METHODS: The present clinical trial was conducted on 150 subjects in 3 groups of 50 cases. After at least 4-8 hr of delivery, cupping therapy was performed for 15-20 min up to 3 times a week (once a day) and acupressure was performed for 15-20 min based on clockwise model. The short-form of McGill pain questionnaire was completed both before and after the intervention. The SPSS statistical software was used to analyze the data using repeated measures ANOVA. Besides, p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: In the cupping therapy group, mean of the perineal pain intensity reduced from 37.5±6.8 before the intervention to 11.1±6.1, 6.9±4.7, and 3.8±3.6 immediately, 24 hr, and 2 weeks after the intervention, respectively. The results of study showed that the differences between the intervention and control groups were statistically significant (p<0.01). Mean difference of the perineal pain intensity in the acupressure group reached from 35.6±8.1 before the intervention to 10.4±5.5 two weeks after the intervention, so the variation between intervention and control groups was statistically significant. CONCLUSION: The study findings showed that cupping therapy and acupressure reduced perineal pain. Therefore, they may be considered as effective treatments for reducing pain intensity of allowing delivery.

BACKGROUND: Continuous low back pain is associated with the symptoms of the pregnancy period. In spite of the improvement of low back pain within 6 months after the delivery, some women may develop chronic problems. This study aimed to investigate the effect of dry cupping therapy at BL23 point on the intensity of low back pain in primiparous women.  METHODS: In the present randomized clinical trial, 100 samples were randomly allocated to either the cupping therapy or the control group (each containing 50 subjects). Cupping therapy was performed for 15-20 minutes every day up to 4 consecutive times. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and short-form McGill pain questionnaire were completed by the two groups before the intervention and immediately, 24 hours, and 2 weeks after that. Then, the data were entered into the SPSS statistical software (v. 16) and analyzed using chi-square test and repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS: According to VAS, the mean intensity of low back pain in the cupping therapy group decreased from 7.8±2.7 before the intervention to 3.7±1.8, 2.5±1.7, and 1.4±1.4 immediately, 24 hours, and 2 weeks after the intervention, respectively. Besides, these measures were respectively obtained as 31.8±10.8, 9.0±6.7, 7.5±6.6, and 3.6±4.1 in the short-form McGill pain questionnaire. According to repeated measures ANOVA, a significant difference was observed among the various stages of follow-up (P=0.01). CONCLUSION: The study results showed cupping therapy to be effective in sedation of pain. Thus, it can be used as an effective treatment for reducing the low back pain. Spatial navigation in rodents has been attributed to place-selective cells in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. However, there is currently no consensus on the neural mechanisms that generate the place-selective activity in hippocampal place cells or entorhinal grid cells. Given the massive input connections from the superficial layers of the entorhinal cortex to place cells in the hippocampal cornu ammonis (CA) regions, it was initially postulated that grid cells drive the spatial responses of place cells. However, recent experiments have found that place cell responses are stable even when grid cell responses are severely distorted, thus suggesting that place cells cannot receive their spatial information chiefly from grid cells. Here, we offer an alternative explanation. In a model with linear grid-to-place-cell transformation, the transformation can be very robust against noise in the grid patterns depending on the nature of the noise. In the two more realistic noise scenarios, the transformation was very robust, while it was not in the other two scenarios. Although current experimental data suggest that other types of place-selective cells modulate place cell responses, our results show that the simple grid-to-place-cell transformation alone can account for the origin of place selectivity in the place cells.

Cupping therapy (CT) is one of the oldest medical techniques available, and is still used in several cultures instead of or as an adjunct or complement to 'western academic' medicine. Moreover, CT (wet or dry) is claimed to have therapeutic effects in many types of disorders which do not fully respond to conventional medicine or for which no effective treatment is available. However, no recent reviews of the clinical practice of cupping are available to the best of our knowledge. We describe the applications of CT as used in Traditional Iranian Medicine (TIM). Several databases were searched for relevant literature. In addition, we studied the main traditional treatises on TIM regarding the history and practice of CT. Information about current practices was obtained from a systematic survey among practitioners. Our results suggest that CT is currently prescribed for up to 120 diseases and disorders that are difficult to treat, including cutaneous (21.7%), musculoskeletal (15%), and central nervous system (13.3%) disorders. Moreover, TIM treatises note 25 specific sites on the body surface which correspond to certain diseases, and on which wet-cupping therapy has therapeutic effects. Additional clinical studies of CT may lead to findings on new therapeutic methods and may shed light on mechanisms of disease and illness that are not fully understood in conventional medicine.

BACKGROUND: Violence is a global issue that has received considerable attention during recent years. Available research has suggested various factors, mostly family and social factors, to possibly affect violence. As previous studies have not examined the relationship between these factors and violent behaviors in adolescents, this study aimed to assess the relationship between environmental factors and violence in adolescents. METHODS: This descriptive, correlational research used cluster sampling to select 5500 adolescent students from Isfahan Province (Iran). Data were collected through a 21-item researcher-made questionnaire. The questionnaire was modified according to the relevant experts' opinions and had Cronbach's alpha of 0.82. The collected data were analyzed by applying multiple regression analysis in SPSS (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). RESULTS: Most participants (89.1%) lived in urban areas and about half (49.8%) of them were female. Linear regression test showed violent behaviors to have significant, inverse relationships with love and affection in the family (ß = -0.097; P < 0.001) and watching drama and comedy movies (ß = -0.128; P < 0.001 and ß = -0.032; P = 0.030, respectively). There were significant, direct relationships between violent behaviors in adolescents and aggressive behaviors in the family (ß =0.099; P < 0.001) and watching crime, police, and action movies (ß =0.129; P < 0.001, detective movies ß =0.043; P < 0.001, and ß =0.061; P < 0.001, respectively). However, the incidence of violent behaviors was not significantly related with the effects of peers and presence of sports facilities. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings confirmed love and affection and healthy pastime (e.g. watching comedy and drama movies) in the family to reduce violent behaviors in adolescents. In contrast, aggressive behaviors in the family, watching crime, police, and action movies were found to increase violent behaviors in adolescents.
