During the growing season of 2021, 201 soil samples from conventionally and organically managed fields from 10 European countries and 8 cropping systems were taken, and 192 residues of synthetic pesticides were analyzed. Pesticide residues were found in 97% of the samples, and 88% of the samples contained mixtures of at least 2 substances. A maximum of 21 substances were found in conventionally managed fields, and a maximum of 12 were found in organically managed fields. The number and concentration of pesticide residues varied significantly between conventional and organic fields in 70 and 50% of the case study sites, respectively. Application records were available for a selected number of fields (n = 82), and these records were compared to the detected substances. Residues from 52% of the applied pesticides were detected in the soils. Only 21% of the pesticide residues detected in the soil samples were applied during the 2021 growing season. From the application data, predicted environmental concentrations of residues in soil were calculated and compared to the measured concentrations. These estimates turned out not to be accurate. The results of this study show that most European agricultural soils contain mixtures of pesticide residues and that current calculation methods may not reliably estimate their presence.

Intensive and widespread use of pesticides raises serious environmental and human health concerns. The presence and levels of 209 pesticide residues (active substances and transformation products) in 625 environmental samples (201 soil, 193 crop, 20 outdoor air, 115 indoor dust, 58 surface water, and 38 sediment samples) have been studied. The samples were collected during the 2021 growing season, across 10 study sites, covering the main European crops, and conventional and organic farming systems. We profiled the pesticide residues found in the different matrices using existing hazard classifications towards non-target organisms and humans. Combining monitoring data and hazard information, we developed an indicator for the prioritization of pesticides, which can support policy decisions and sustainable pesticide use transitions. Eighty-six percent of the samples had at least one residue above the respective limit of detection. One hundred residues were found in soil, 112 in water, 99 in sediments, 78 in crops, 76 in outdoor air, and 197 in indoor dust. The number, levels, and profile of residues varied between farming systems. Our results show that non-approved compounds still represent a significant part of environmental cocktails and should be accounted for in monitoring programs and risk assessments. The hazard profiles analysis confirms the dominance of compounds of low-moderate hazard and underscores the high hazard of some approved compounds and recurring "no data available" situations. Overall, our results support the idea that risk should be assessed in a mixture context, taking environmentally relevant mixtures into consideration. We have uncovered uncertainties and data gaps that should be addressed, as well as the policy implications at the EU approval status level. Our newly introduced indicator can help identify research priority areas, and act as a reference for targeted scenarios set forth in the Farm to Fork pesticide reduction goals.

Pesticide compounds can influence denitrification processes in groundwater in many ways. This study observed behavior of three selected pesticides under denitrifying conditions. Alachlor, terbuthylazine, and tebuconazole, in a concentration of 0.1 mL L-1, were examined using two laboratory denitrifications assays: a "short" 7-day and a "long" 28-day test. During these tests, removal of pesticides via adsorption and biotic decomposition, as well as the efficiency of nitrate removal in the presence of the pesticides, were measured. No considerable inhibition of the denitrification process was observed for any of the pesticides. On the contrary, significant stimulation was observed after 21 days for alachlor (49%) and after seven days for terbuthylazine (40%) and tebuconazole (36%). Adsorption was in progress only during the first seven days in the case of all tested pesticides and increased only negligibly afterwards. Immediate adsorption of terbuthylazine was probably influenced by the mercuric chloride inhibitor. A biotic loss of 4% was measured only in the case of alachlor.

OBJECTIVE: Significant attention has been devoted to knowledge of and attitudes toward epilepsy among teachers, and the importance of their previous experience with epilepsy has been proved. However, no information about a specific group of homeroom teachers is available despite their importance in forming a positive climate in class and preventing related stigma. Thus, we aim to evaluate knowledge of and attitudes towards epilepsy in this group and compare the results with previously studied groups of 136 teachers in training and 123 primary school teachers not having, in most cases, experience with children with epilepsy. METHODS: One hundred and four homeroom teachers of children with epilepsy attending mainstream schools were involved in the study. They fulfilled an 18-item knowledge test, a 5-item questionnaire focusing on epilepsy-related self-confidence, and a 21-item Czech version of the Attitudes Towards People with Epilepsy scale. All instruments were used and validated in our previous research focusing on the other groups of teachers, making possible the direct comparison of the results. RESULTS: We found that homeroom teachers had significantly better knowledge of epilepsy (total score of 11.75 ± 2.29 points compared with 10.21 ± 2.08 points for primary school teachers and 9.60 ± 2.08 points for teachers in training) as well as more positive attitudes (30.81 ± 11.11 vs. 24.80 ± 11.01, and 25.81 ± 10.20, respectively). Regarding self-confidence, homeroom teachers were comparable with primary school teachers (total score of 18.31 ± 3.74 compared with 17.71 ± 3.86) but significantly better than teachers in training (16.37 ± 3.20). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that despite having a higher level of epilepsy-related knowledge, self-confidence, and attitudes, homeroom teachers still have significant shortages in some specific issues, especially regarding the ability to recognize the adverse effects of antiepileptic drugs. Tailored education interventions focusing on these groups and topics are thus highly needed.

Popularity of hyaluronan (HA) in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries, led to the investigation and development of new HA-based materials, with enzymes playing a key role. Beta-D-glucuronidases catalyze the hydrolysis of a beta-D-glucuronic acid residue from the non-reducing end of various substrates. However, lack of specificity towards HA for most beta-D-glucuronidases, in addition to the high cost and low purity of those active on HA, have prevented their widespread application. In this study, we investigated a recombinant beta-glucuronidase from Bacteroides fragilis (rBfGUS). We demonstrated the rBfGUS's activity on native, modified, and derivatized HA oligosaccharides (oHAs). Using chromogenic beta-glucuronidase substrate and oHAs, we characterized the enzyme's optimal conditions and kinetic parameters. Additionally, we evaluated rBfGUS's activity towards oHAs of various sizes and types. To increase reusability and ensure the preparation of enzyme-free oHA products, rBfGUS was immobilized on two types of magnetic macroporous bead cellulose particles. Both immobilized forms of rBfGUS demonstrated suitable operational and storage stabilities, and their activity parameters were comparable to the free form. Our findings suggest that native and derivatized oHAs can be prepared using this bacterial beta-glucuronidase, and a novel biocatalyst with enhanced operational parameters has been developed with a potential for industrial use.

Purpose: Titanium dioxide nanoparticles, 25 nm in size of crystallites (TiO2 P25), are among the most produced nanomaterials worldwide. The broad use of TiO2 P25 in material science has implied a request to evaluate their biological effects, especially in the lungs. Hence, the pulmonary A549 cell line has been used to estimate the effects of TiO2 P25. However, the reports have provided dissimilar results on caused toxicity. Surprisingly, the physicochemical factors influencing TiO2 P25 action in biological models have not been evaluated in most reports. Thus, the objective of the present study is to characterize the preparation of TiO2 P25 for biological testing in A549 cells and to evaluate their biological effects. Methods: We determined the size and crystallinity of TiO2 P25. We used four techniques for TiO2 P25 dispersion. We estimated the colloid stability of TiO2 P25 in distilled water, isotonic NaCl solution, and cell culture medium. We applied the optimal dispersion conditions for testing the biological effects of TiO2 P25 (0-100 µg.mL-1) in A549 cells using biochemical assays (dehydrogenase activity, glutathione levels) and microscopy. Results: We found that the use of fetal bovine serum in culture medium is essential to maintain sufficient colloid stability of dispersed TiO2 P25. Under these conditions, TiO2 P25 were unable to induce a significant impairment of A549 cells according to the results of biochemical and microscopy evaluations. When the defined parameters for the use of TiO2 P25 in A549 cells were met, similar results on the biological effects of TiO2 P25 were obtained in two independent cell laboratories. Conclusion: We optimized the experimental conditions of TiO2 P25 preparation for toxicity testing in A549 cells. The results presented here on TiO2 P25-induced cellular effects are reproducible. Therefore, our results can be helpful for other researchers using TiO2 P25 as a reference material.

While microRNAs are considered as excellent biomarkers of various diseases, there are still several remaining challenges regarding their isolation. In this study, we aimed to design a novel RNA isolation method that would help to overcome those challenges. Therefore, we present a novel phenol/chloroform-free, low-cost method for miRNA extraction. Within this method, RNA is extracted from cell lysate with an isopropanol/water/NaCl system, followed by solid-phase extraction using TiO2 microspheres to effectively separate short RNAs from long RNA molecules. We also demonstrated the pH-dependent selectivity of TiO2 microspheres towards different sizes of RNA. We were able to regulate the size range of extracted RNAs with simple adjustments in binding conditions used during the solid-phase extraction.

The immunoreactivity or/and stress response can be induced by nanomaterials' different properties, such as size, shape, etc. These effects are, however, not yet fully understood. This study aimed to clarify the effects of SiO2 nanofibers (SiO2NFs) on the cellular responses of THP-1-derived macrophage-like cells. The effects of SiO2NFs with different lengths on reactive oxygen species (ROS) and pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1ß in THP-1 cells were evaluated. From the two tested lengths, it was only the L-SiO2NFs with a length ≈ 44 ± 22 µm that could induce ROS. Compared to this, only S-SiO2NFs with a length ≈ 14 ± 17 µm could enhance TNF-α and IL-1ß expression. Our results suggested that L-SiO2NFs disassembled by THP-1 cells produced ROS and that the inflammatory reaction was induced by the uptake of S-SiO2NFs by THP-1 cells. The F-actin staining results indicated that SiO2NFs induced cell motility and phagocytosis. There was no difference in cytotoxicity between L- and S-SiO2NFs. However, our results suggested that the lengths of SiO2NFs induced different cellular responses.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) has a special position among glycosaminoglycans. As a major component of the extracellular matrix (ECM). This simple, unbranched polysaccharide is involved in the regulation of various biological cell processes, whether under physiological conditions or in cases of cell damage. This review summarizes the history of this molecule's study, its distinctive metabolic pathway in the body, its unique properties, and current information regarding its interaction partners. Our main goal, however, is to intensively investigate whether this relatively simple polymer may find applications in protecting against ionizing radiation (IR) or for therapy in cases of radiation-induced damage. After exposure to IR, acute and belated damage develops in each tissue depending upon the dose received and the cellular composition of a given organ. A common feature of all organ damage is a distinct change in composition and structure of the ECM. In particular, the important role of HA was shown in lung tissue and the variability of this flexible molecule in the complex mechanism of radiation-induced lung injuries. Moreover, HA is also involved in intermediating cell behavior during morphogenesis and in tissue repair during inflammation, injury, and would healing. The possibility of using the HA polymer to affect or treat radiation tissue damage may point to the missing gaps in the responsible mechanisms in the onset of this disease. Therefore, in this article, we will also focus on obtaining answers from current knowledge and the results of studies as to whether hyaluronic acid can also find application in radiation science.

The study showed novel findings about changes in the fate and bioavailability of conazole fungicides (CFs) after biochar (BC) addition to soil. Two contrasting soils (low- and high-sorbing of CF; L soils, H soils) were amended by three BCs (low-, moderate-, and high-sorbing of CF; L-BC, M-BC, H-BC) at 0.2% and 2% doses. Epoxiconazole (EPC) and tebuconazole (TBC) were then added to the soil-BC mixtures, and their degradation, bioaccumulation in earthworms (Eisenia andrei), and bioconcentration in lettuce (Lactuca sativa) were studied for three months. Also, stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) was performed to determine CF (bio)accessibility. The EPC and TBC degradation in the soil-BC mixtures followed usually the first-order decay kinetics. The BC addition prevalently decreased the pesticides degradation in the L soil mixtures but often increased it in the H soil mixtures. In general, EPC degraded less than TBC. BC type and dose roles in the pesticides degradation were unclear. The BC addition significantly reduced pesticide uptake to the earthworms in the L soil mixtures (by 37-96%) and in the H soil mixtures (by 6-89%) with 2% BC. The BC addition reduced pesticide uptake to the lettuce roots and leaves significantly-up to two orders of magnitude, and this reduction was strong in H soil mixtures at 2% of BC. The BC addition reduced the CF (bio)accessibility measured by SBSE in all L soil mixtures and some H soil mixtures with 2% BC. Although not significant, it also seems that the pesticide bioaccumulation, bioconcentration, and (bio)accessibility were decreasing according to the BC type (L-BC > M-BC > H-BC). The pesticide concentrations in the earthworms and lettuce correlated significantly to the SBSE results, which indicates this technique as a possible predictor of biotic uptake. Our results showed that the interactions were hard to predict in the complex soil-BC-pesticide system.

The key factor in the development of antibody-based assays is to find an antibody that has an appropriate affinity, high specificity, and low cross-reactivity. However, this task is not easy to carry out since the research antibodies on the market may suffer from low specificity and reproducibility. Here, we report on a palm-sized dot blot-based device, called the affiblot, that has a specially designed lid that allows simultaneous semi-quantitative comparison of up to five antibodies from different suppliers regarding their affinity/avidity, cross-reactivity, and batch-to-batch reliability. The only required peripheral equipment is a vacuum pump, a camera, and densitometry software. The affiblot device was tested for its functionality and its measurements were compared against those obtained by standard dot blot and ELISA. The benefit over these methods, when various antibodies are evaluated, is in its simplicity. It allows easy antigen deposition, fast application and the discarding of the solutions, a compact undivided membrane, and therefore significant decrease of labor. The device was tested with specific anti-ApoE, anti-EpCAM, anti-Salmonella, anti-E. coli, and anti-Listeria antibodies from different suppliers. Their properties were compared for their ability to interact specifically with antigen and/or non-target structures and the best-suited antibody for the intended application was identified.

Loading active ingredients on nanocarrier systems is becoming a common strategy for improving pesticide formulations. One of the most important properties of these nanoformulations is the proportion of pesticide associated with the nanocarriers (encapsulation efficiency, EE). EE is often determined by centrifugal ultrafiltration. However, the losses of active ingredient in the centrifugal ultrafiltration devices are typically not assessed, potentially leading to erroneous results. In this work, the losses of three pesticides (tebuconazole, terbuthylazine and chlorpyrifos) during centrifugal ultrafiltration have been systematically evaluated for nine different devices. Results suggest that centrifugal ultrafiltration is not suitable for determining the EE of compounds such as chlorpyrifos as 100% losses were observed on all the devices tested. Losses of tebuconazole and terbuthylazine were highly variable according to the type of membrane and the lowest losses were observed in the devices with hydrophilic regenerated cellulose membranes. Based on these results, we propose a correction factor and demonstrate its application to calculate the EE of two nanoformulations based on poly(ε-caprolactone) nanocarriers. The approach extends the applicability of centrifugal ultrafiltration to a wider range of pesticide nanoformulations. We also discuss the effect of dilution on EE and make recommendations to improve the characterisation of nanoparticles-based pesticide nanoformulations in the future.

Biochar usage in agriculture becomes increasingly important for the improvement of soil properties. However, from the perspective of pesticides, biochar can influence exposure to pesticides of both target and non-target organisms and also pesticides' fate in soil. Our study investigated degradation and bioaccumulation (in the Eisenia andrei earthworm) of two conazole fungicides, epoxiconazole and tebuconazole, added to high- and low-sorbing soils (by means of fungicides' sorption measured beforehand) amended with low-, moderate- and high-sorbing biochars at 0.2% and 2% doses. We aimed to investigate the effects of contrasting soil and biochar properties, different doses of biochar in soil-biochar mixtures, and different compounds on the degradation and bioaccumulation. We also wanted to explore if the beforehand determined sorption of fungicides on individual soils and biochars is manifested somehow in their degradation and/or bioaccumulation in soil-biochar mixtures. The biochars' presence in the soils promoted the degradation of fungicides with a clear effect of dose and soil, but less clear effect of biochar or compound. The bioaccumulation factors were higher in low-sorbing soil variants and also decreased with increasing biochar dose. For low-sorbing soil variants, the bioaccumulation was also influenced by the type of biochar corresponding to its sorbing potential and the possible effect on the bioavailability of the fungicides. Our results show that mixing of biochars with soils changes the fate and bioaccumulation of the conazole fungicides. However, the sorption results from original materials are not straightforwardly manifested in the more complex soil-biota system.

Widely used conazole fungicides (CFs) belong to the most frequently detected pesticides in Central European arable soils. However, data on their environmental behaviour and bioavailability to soil organisms are surprisingly scarce. In the present laboratory microcosm study prochloraz, tebuconazole, epoxiconazole and flusilazole were applied to 12 different agricultural soils at background levels. Bioaccumulation to earthworm E. andrei and lettuce L. sativa roots and leaves was evaluated in non-aged (biota exposure after addition of pesticides) and aged (exposure started three months later) systems. In contrast with expectations from ageing effect (decrease of bioavailability), bioaccumulation in E. andrei was both reduced and enhanced after ageing depending on soil properties. The reduction of bioaccumulation correlated positively to the percentage of clay but negatively to soil organic matter. The affinity of compost worm E. andrei towards organic matter where hydrophobic pesticide molecules are sorbed is discussed as a possible explanation. An apparent effect of ageing (reduction of bioavailability) was particularly observed in lettuce roots, where bioaccumulation was significantly reduced in time. However, bioaccumulation in leaves changed ambiguously in aged variants among CFs, possibly as a combined result of bioconcentration, dilution by plant growth and metabolism. This study brings first insights into how the bioaccumulation of conazole fungicides is affected by sequestration in agricultural soils. The results indicate that in complex systems, the ageing is not necessarily connected with decrease of bioaccumulation.

PURPOSE: Therapeutic thorax irradiation as an intervention in lung cancer has its limitations due to toxic effects leading to pneumonitis and/or pulmonary fibrosis. It has already been confirmed that hyaluronic acid (HA), an extracellular matrix glycosaminoglycan, is involved in inflammation disorders and wound healing in lung tissue. We examined the effects after gamma irradiation of hyaluronic acid nanoparticles (HANPs) applied into lung prior to that irradiation in a dose causing radiation-induced pulmonary injuries (RIPI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Biocompatible HANPs were first used for viability assay conducted on the J774.2 cell line. For in vivo experiments, HANPs were administered intratracheally to C57Bl/6 mice 30 min before thoracic irradiation by 17 Gy. Molecular, cellular, and histopathological parameters were measured in lung and peripheral blood at days 113, 155, and 190, corresponding to periods of significant morphological and/or biochemical alterations of RIPI. RESULTS: Modification of linear hyaluronic acid molecule into nanoparticles structure significantly affected the physiological properties and caused long-term stability against ionizing radiation. The HANPs treatments had significant effects on the expression of the cytokines and particularly on the pro-fibrotic signaling pathway in the lung tissue. The radiation fibrosis phase was altered significantly in comparison with a solely irradiated group. CONCLUSIONS: The present study provides evidence that application of HANPs caused significant changes in molecular and cellular patterns associated with RIPI. These findings suggest that HANPs could diminish detrimental radiation-induced processes in lung tissue, thereby potentially decreasing the extracellular matrix degradation leading to lung fibrosis.

Denitrifying woodchip bioreactors, natural treatment systems used for the reduction of nitrates in agricultural runoff or groundwater, may cause adverse side effects within receiving waters. One of the least studied but nonetheless still serious issues is the production of hydrogen sulphide, which occurs in bioreactors under operating conditions favourable to its creation. The aim of this paper is to elucidate the effect of process parameters on the production of sulphides and the proportion of hydrogen sulphide in a 1-year-long experimental study with four laboratory-scale denitrifying bioreactors. During the study, the strong dependence of sulphate reduction and the production of sulphides on the effluent oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) concentrations of bioreactors became evident. Sulphide formation occurred at concurrent effluent NO3-N concentrations below 3 mg/L and ORPs lower than - 100 mV. The tested hydraulic retention time of 1.7 days was sufficiently long to achieve these conditions. At an effluent pH of 7 or lower, the majority of the total sulphides present were in the form of hydrogen sulphide. It is suggested that in order to avoid the production of hydrogen sulphide, the production of total sulphides has to be minimised.

Conazole fungicides are currently used pesticides with considerable chronic toxicity and ecotoxicity that are also on EU list for substitution. They enter the soil forming short- or long-term residues. In this study two of their representatives, epoxiconazole (EPC) and tebuconazole (TBC), have been tested with 20 soils from the Czech Republic for their adsorption. Adsorption, by means of Kd coefficients, was compared to "basic" (TOC, pH, clay …) and "advanced" (surface area, minerals ..) soil properties. After doing multivariate analysis of the variables it was apparent that adsorption of both pesticides was highly associated with pH (negatively correlated), and less associated with soil organo-mineral complex (TOC, clay and surface area) and C and N in soil organic matter (OM). Particle sizes or cation exchange capacity (CEC) did not show correlation with adsorption, but showed an association in multidimensional space in factor analysis (FA). Some correlations were revealed between EPC adsorption and soil organic matter parameters. Recalculating Kd to Koc and to Gibb's free energy (ΔG) and its values indicated that the adsorption of EPC and TBC is mainly weak physical adsorption - partitioning. Also, ΔG values gave better correlation with pH(H2O) than Kd. Surface area impacted EPC adsorption. From the several soil minerals, kaolinite showed EPC and TBC adsorption. EPC adsorption was not highly influenced with pH changes compared to TBC. The number and types of H-bonds with molecular geometry govern the sorption, which might crucially affect leachibility in soil, and this may indicate that TBC is more leachable than EPC for the same soil.

In birds, concentrations of testosterone (T) and corticosterone (Cort) are closely connected with many morphological, behavioral, and other physiological traits, including reproduction, metabolism, immunity, and fitness. The direction of the effect of these hormones on above-mentioned traits, and the potential feedback between hormones are in general unclear; in addition, knowledge on how age and sex can affect T and Cort concentrations is still inconsistent. Our study used a novel method to analyze testosterone and corticosterone in feathers (Tf, Cortf) based on the precolumn chemical derivatization of hormones before liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. Unlike previously used methods (RIA, EIA), our analytical procedure allows simultaneous analysis of both hormones from small amounts of feathers (4-25 mg) and, thus, overcomes the problem of insufficient detection limits. We applied this method to reveal associations between Tf and Cortf hormone concentrations and feather growth, age, and sex in feathers grown during the postbreeding (flanks) and prebreeding (tails) periods in barn swallows (Hirundo rustica). There was neither a correlation between prebreeding and postbreeding Tf, nor between prebreeding and postbreeding Cortf. Tail Cortf concentrations were negatively associated with tail feather growth rates. Feather hormone concentrations were correlated in the prebreeding period, negatively in males but positively in females. Both Cortf and Tf were higher in young birds compared to older ones, indicating either an age-related decrease in hormone concentrations within individuals, or the selective disappearance of individuals with high steroid concentrations. Males and females did not differ in Cortf, but Tf concentrations were higher in males than females, particularly during the prebreeding period. In this study, we provide an effective method for analyzing hormones in feathers in an ecological context, especially in situations when the total amount of feathers available for the analysis is limited.

This work reports highly selective phosphopeptide enrichment using amorphous TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2NTs) and the same material decorated with superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (TiO2NTs@Fe3O4NPs). TiO2NTs and TiO2NTs@Fe3O4NPs materials were applied for phosphopeptide enrichment both from a simple peptide mixture (tryptic digest of bovine serum albumin and α-casein) and from a complex peptide mixture (tryptic digest of Jurkat T cell lysate). The obtained enrichment efficiency and selectivity for phosphopeptides of TiO2NTs and TiO2NTs@Fe3O4NPs were increased to 28.7 and 25.3%, respectively, as compared to those of the well-established TiO2 microspheres. The enrichment protocol was extended for a second elution step facilitating the identification of additional phosphopeptides. It further turned out that both types of amorphous TiO2 nanotubes provide qualitatively new physicochemical features that are clearly advantageous for highly selective phosphopeptide enrichment. This has been confirmed experimentally resulting in substantial reduction of non-phosphorylated peptides in the enriched samples. In addition, TiO2NTs@Fe3O4NPs combine high selectivity and ease of handling due to the superparamagnetic character of the material. The presented materials and performances are further promising for applications toward a whole range of other types of biomolecules to be treated in a similar fashion.

Antibiotics are among the most widely administered drugs in the growing animal food industry. Of all the antibiotics approved for agriculture, sulphonamides are of particular interest. Their spectrum of activity is broad, affecting gram-positive, gram-negative, and many protozoal organisms, and they have been used for the treatment of a wide variety of animals. Animal manure is one of primary sources of soil contamination by sulphonamides. As they have a low soil sorption potential and are therefore highly mobile in soil, they can be transported to groundwater. In the present study, papers dealing with the fate and behaviour of veterinary sulphonamides under denitrifying conditions often arising in the subsurface are reviewed. Veterinary sulphonamide-exposed conditions can result in either inhibition or stimulation of the denitrification process owing to their toxicity or stress for denitrifiers. The effect of sulphonamides on individual denitrification steps is unbalanced, which can cause accumulation of process intermediates (dinitrogen oxide, nitrites). Although research results related to veterinary sulphonamide biodegradation in a nitratereducing environment show great variety, they indicate that these compounds are biodegradable under denitrifying conditions, that their biodegradation fits the first-order kinetics model, and that microbial action is the main mechanism of their dissipation. Regarding biodegradation pathways, research to date has only focused on sulfamethoxazole. Its degradation is driven by the presence of nitrous acid, which is formed from nitrites generated by the denitrification process as an intermediate product. Nevertheless, sulfamethoxazole degradation is abiotic, meaning that it does not participate in the denitrifying metabolism. For the formation of sulfamethoxazole transformation products, including its nitro, nitroso and desamino derivatives, the presence of the primary aromatic amine group is key. As this functional group is common for all sulphonamides, it can be assumed that these transformation products are also involved in the degradation pathways of other sulphonamides.
