RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The mandible of the rabbit is considered a reliable model to be used to study bone regeneration in defects. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the formation of new bone around implants installed in defects of either 5 or 10 mm in the mandible of rabbits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 12 rabbits, 3 mm deep circumferential defect, either 5 or 10 mm in diameter, were prepared bilaterally and an implant was placed in the center. A collagen membrane was placed to close the entrance. After 10 weeks, biopsies were taken, histological slides were prepared, and different regions of the defects were analyzed. RESULTS: Similar amounts of new bone were found in both defects. However, most of the 5 mm defects were filled with new bone. New bone was observed closing the entrance of the defect and laid onto the implant surface. Only in a few cases the healing was incomplete. Despite a similar percentage of new bone found within the 10 mm defects, the healing was incomplete in most of the cases, presenting a low rate of bone formation onto the implant surface within the defect. Only one case presented the closure of the entrance. CONCLUSIONS: The dimensions of the defect strongly influenced the healing so that a circumferential marginal defect of 10 mm around an implant in the mandible body should be considered a critical-sized defect. The presence of the implant and of residues of teeth might have strongly influenced the healing.

RESUMO

We aimed to improve the biocompatibility and osteoinductive potential of Ti implants using a simulated intraoral hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating. We devised a novel surface treatment for aggressive induction of osteoblast adhesion and bone regeneration on the implant surface. A thin α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) film was deposited on the implant surface using a pulsed Er:YAG laser. The coating was converted to HAp through artificial saliva immersion, which was confirmed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). SEM showed needle-like HAp crystals on the Ti disks and sandblasted implant surfaces after immersion in artificial saliva for 96 h. Microcomputed tomography and histological evaluation 4 and 8 weeks after implantation into beagle dog mandibles showed that the HAp-coated implant was biocompatible and exhibited superior osteoinduction compared to that of sandblasted implants. Coating the implant surface with HAp using an Er:YAG laser has potential as a new method of the implant-surface debridement.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Healing of critical-size defects is a well-known problem that has been challenged in several studies. The aim of the experiment was to evaluate bone formation and osseointegration of implants installed in critical defects of the mandibular body simultaneously grafted with Bio-Oss® or Cerabone®. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Defects, 10 mm wide and 3 mm deep, were prepared at both lateral aspects of the mandible in 12 rabbits. One implant was installed in the center of the defect, and bovine xenografts produced either at low (Bio-Oss®; Low-T) or high (Cerabone®; High-T) temperatures were used to fill the defects. A collagen membrane was placed to cover the sites. Healing was evaluated 10 weeks after surgery. RESULTS: In both groups, most sites showed optimal healing with closure of the coronal entrance of the defects. However, residual defects occupied by soft tissues and biomaterial particles were observed, even though generally limited to some regions of the defect. Osseointegration of the implant surface in the region of the defect was poor in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Circumferential marginal critical-size defects around implants filled with bovine xenografts presented regions with a complete healing in both groups. However, the healing was not complete at all regions in most defects; therefore, a complete optimal healing of critical-size marginal defects cannot be predicted.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Xenogenous bone has been proposed as an alternative to overcome the disadvantages of autogenous grafting. The aim of the present study was to study bone dynamics at inlay and onlay xenografts used for bone augmentation applying a ring technique. METHODS: The bone at the lateral surface of the mandibular angle of 12 adult male New Zealand White rabbits was exposed bilaterally. The cortical layer received multiple perforations on one side of the mandible, and a xenograft block of collagenated cancellous equine bone, 7 mm in diameter and 3 mm in width, was fixed on the prepared surface using an implant (onlay group). On the opposite side, a defect 7 mm in diameter and 3 mm in depth was prepared, and the xenograft block was adapted to the defect and fixed with an implant (inlay group). RESULTS: After ten weeks of healing, in the onlay grafts, new bone was mainly formed on the trabeculae surface, reaching in some specimens the most coronal regions of the block. In the inlay grafts, new bone was found arranged on the trabecular surfaces but also occupying the spaces among the trabeculae. The entrance of the defect was often found close to the top of the block by newly formed bone. A higher percentage of new bone was found in the inlay (19.0 ± 9.3%) compared to the onlay (10.4 ± 7.4%) groups (p = 0.031). The mean gain in osseointegration at the implant in relation to the base of the original 3 mm deep defect was 0.95 ± 1.05% in the onlay group and 0.78 ± 0.71% in the inlay group (p = 0.603). CONCLUSION: The inlay grafts exhibited a higher new bone percentage than the onlay block grafts possibly due to the defect conformation that presented more sources for bone growth. The trabecular conformation and the composition of the grafts made possible the expression of the osteoconductive properties of the material used. This resulted, in several specimens, in the growth of bone on the graft trabeculae toward the most superior regions in both groups and in the closure of the coronal entrance of the defects in the inlay group. The clinical relevance of this experiment is that the ring technique applied as an inlay method could be suitable for bone augmentation.

RESUMO

Active galaxies contain a supermassive black hole at their center that grows by accreting matter from the surrounding galaxy. The accretion process in about the central 10 parsecs has not been directly resolved in previous observations because of the small apparent angular sizes involved. We observed the active nucleus of the Circinus Galaxy using submillimeter interferometry. A dense inflow of molecular gas was evident on subparsec scales. We calculated that less than 3% of this inflow is accreted by the black hole, with the rest being ejected by multiphase outflows, providing feedback to the host galaxy. Our observations also reveal a dense gas disk surrounding the inflow that is gravitationally unstable, which drives the accretion into about the central 1 parsec.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The conformation of the recipient site for an inlay graft presents an increased contact with the parent bone compared to an onlay graft. This might favor bone growth within the inlay compared to onlay grafts. Hence, the objective of this study was to compare the bone incorporation and remodeling processes of xenogeneic en bloc grafts placed using two bone grafting techniques, i.e., onlay vs. inlay. METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, split-mouth study (test and control sides in the same animal), two bone grafting techniques were comparatively evaluated. The lateral aspect of the rabbit mandible was used as the recipient site, bilaterally. On one side of the mandible, the cortical bone was perforated with drills to allow a better bone formation from the bone wound and the marrow spaces. A xenogeneic bone block was fixed in the center of the prepared region, representing the onlay site. On the other side of the mandible, a 7 mm wide and 3 mm deep circumferential defect was prepared using trephines and drills. A xenogeneic bone block was fixed in the center of the defect, representing the inlay site. Two healing periods were applied in the study: 2 and 10 weeks, each represented by 10 rabbits (n = 10 for each period). RESULTS: After 2 weeks of healing, the mean percentage of new bone was 10.4% and 23.3% at the onlay and inlay grafts, respectively (p = 0.022). After 10 weeks of healing, new bone increased to 13.2% at the onlay sites and 25.4% at the inlay sites (p = 0.080). In the 10-week period, the inlay grafts presented a homogeneous growth of new bone in all regions, while in the onlay grafts, low percentages of new bone were observed in the external regions. CONCLUSION: The percentage of new bone increased faster and was higher in the inlay grafts than in the onlay grafts. This outcome might be related to the self-contained conformation of the recipient site in the inlay group, which offered more sources for new bone formation compared to the one-wall conformation of the recipient sites in the onlay group. The osteoconductive properties of the biomaterial allowed the newly formed bone to reach the most peripheral regions in both groups. The osteoconductive properties of the biomaterial, together with the protection offered by the collagen membrane, allowed marginal closure of the defects by newly formed bone in the inlay group.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to apply the break-even point concept to express the dynamics of bone formation and resorption around implants. METHODS: Published data on new bone and parent bone densities around implants from one human and three dog studies were selected and used for analysis. The break-even point (BEP) of the bone density (BD) was assessed. The BEP is the point at which, in a graph, the lines representing the formation of new bone and resorption of old bone intersect. BEP is expressed in time (x; days) of occurrence and percentage of bone (y; %) at which the break-even point occurs and illustrates the grade of bone modeling. The sooner the occurrence, the faster the bone formation in relation to the resorption of the old bone. RESULTS: In the marrow and cortical compartments, BEP of bone density occurred after 7.9 days (BD% 24.5%) and >30 days, respectively. Different surfaces presented similar BEP, ranging between 9.7 and 11.2 days (BD% 19.1-22.5%). BEP at implants installed in the human maxilla occurred after 29-30.4 days (BD% 28.3-29.6%). CONCLUSION: The present study showed that the parameters used to express the break-even point can provide information on the influence of the model used, surface characteristics, and bone quality on bone modeling/remodeling around implants.

RESUMO

This study aimed to analyze the morphology of bone graft granules, the presence of granule demineralization, and bone morphology in retrieved human maxillary sinus bone graft biopsies. Healthy patients underwent sinus bone augmentation using lateral access. Two different dimensions of the antrostomy were performed, a 4 mm or 8 mm height. After 6 months, all sites received one implant using a flap technique, crestal positioning, and submerged healing. Implant biopsies were retrieved after 3 months and were histologically processed. The ESEM analysis was performed on the entire portion of the peri-implant bone (up to 750 µm from the implant thread). Three different regions of interest (ROIs) were selected: the coronal, middle, and apical portions of the implant. In these areas, EDX was performed, and calcium (Ca), phosphate (P), nitrogen (N), and their atomic ratios (Ca/P, Ca/N, and P/N) were calculated. Different bone tissue electron-dense areas were detected through grayscale intensity quantification of ESEM images with different organic (N) or inorganic (Ca,P) compositions. A total of 16 biopsies from 16 healthy patients were analyzed. Bone graft granules were mostly detected in the apical ROI. New bone tissue bridges were detected in the apical and middle ROI. These structures, with lower Ca/N and P/N ratios, were connected and enveloped the bone graft granules. Cortical ROI revealed the most mineralized bone tissue. Conclusions: After 9 months, bone graft resorption was only partially completed and new bone tissue appeared less mineralized in the middle and apical ROI than in the coronal ROI.

RESUMO

The detection of starlight from the host galaxies of quasars during the reionization epoch (z > 6) has been elusive, even with deep Hubble Space Telescope observations1,2. The current highest redshift quasar host detected3, at z = 4.5, required the magnifying effect of a foreground lensing galaxy. Low-luminosity quasars4-6 from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP)7 mitigate the challenge of detecting their underlying, previously undetected host galaxies. Here we report rest-frame optical images and spectroscopy of two HSC-SSP quasars at z > 6 with the JWST. Using near-infrared camera imaging at 3.6 and 1.5 µm and subtracting the light from the unresolved quasars, we find that the host galaxies are massive (stellar masses of 13 × and 3.4 × 1010 M☉, respectively), compact and disc-like. Near-infrared spectroscopy at medium resolution shows stellar absorption lines in the more massive quasar, confirming the detection of the host. Velocity-broadened gas in the vicinity of these quasars enables measurements of their black hole masses (1.4 × 109 and 2.0 × 108 M☉, respectively). Their location in the black hole mass-stellar mass plane is consistent with the distribution at low redshift, suggesting that the relation between black holes and their host galaxies was already in place less than a billion years after the Big Bang.

RESUMO

Objective: To compare healing of collagenated and non-collagenated xenografts used for maxillary sinus floor elevation. Materials and Methods: Two different xenografts were used: deproteinized bovine bone (DBBM group) and collagenated corticocancellous porcine bone (collagenated group). Healing was studied after 2, 4, and 8 weeks. The loss of dimensions of the elevated area and the percentages of new bone, xenograft remnants, osteoclastic zones, vessels, inflammatory infiltrates, and soft tissues were analyzed. Three regions were evaluated: close to the bone walls (bone wall region), subjacent the sinus mucosa (submucosa region), and the center of the elevated area (middle region). The primary variables were the percentage of new bone and xenograft remnants. Results: Between 2 and 8 weeks, the elevated areas showed a reduction of 16.3% and 52.2% in the DBBM and collagenated groups, respectively (p < 0.01 between the two areas after 8 weeks). After 8 weeks, the highest content of new bone was observed in the bone wall region, which was higher in the collagenated group than in the DBBM group (41.6% and 28.6%, respectively; p < 0.01). A similar quantity of new bone was found between the two groups in other regions. A higher percentage of vessels in all regions evaluated (p < 0.01) and soft tissue in the sub-mucosa region (p < 0.05) was found in the collagenated group than in the DBBM group. Conclusions: The present study showed that both xenografts allowed new bone formation. In comparison with the non-collagenated xenograft, the collagenated xenograft underwent higher resorption, resulting in greater shrinkage of the elevated space after sinus lifting and a higher content of new bone in the regions close to the bone walls. Clinical relevance: In this study, the region adjacent to the bone wall showed the highest new bone content. This region resembles the base of the sinus, closest to the sinus floor and walls, and is the most important region from a clinical point of view because it is where the implant will be installed. Residues of the biomaterial remained after 8 weeks of healing. Other reports have shown that these biomaterial residues may interfere with the integration of implants.

RESUMO

Goltz syndrome is a rare X-linked dominant multisystem disorder that presents with ectoderm and mesoderm-derived symptoms. Skin manifestations including congenital patchy skin aplasia, congenital nodular fat herniation, congenital hypo- or hyperpigmentation along Blaschko's lines, telangiectasia, and congenital ridged dysplastic nails are typical in this disorder. Almost all cases of Goltz syndrome correspond to female newborns and that hemizygosis makes the syndrome fetal in males. Triple X syndrome is a relatively common congenital disorder that presents with mild to no symptoms in the developmental and psychiatric realm. The patient reported here was born with multisystem anomaly affecting the eyes, craniofacial region, cardiovascular system, skin, and limbs. A G-banding chromosomal study revealed 47, XXX. She was diagnosed with Goltz syndrome owing to her distinctive skin manifestations. The congenital cervical skin defect healed with conservative treatment. The facial cleft, cleft lip-palate, and syndactyly were successfully treated with multiple surgical treatments. The combination of triple X syndrome and Goltz syndrome is very rare. We describe the expression of presenting with both syndromes simultaneously.

RESUMO

AIM: to evaluate bone formation in close contact with the sinus mucosa after different periods from sinus augmentation and the influence on healing of the presence of an inward dis-placed bone window. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighteen rabbits were included in the experiment. A trap-door technique was applied at the test sites, and the bony window was elevated inward (inward window; IW) together with the sinus mucosa. At the control sites, the bony window was removed before the elevation of the sinus mucosa. The elevated space was filled with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) and both access windows were covered with a collagen membrane. Histometric measurements were performed subjacent the sinus mucosa after 2, 4, and 8 weeks of healing. RESULTS: Very few sinuses presented small percentages of new bone in close contact with the sinus mucosa in the various period examined. The presence of bone in the neighbor areas might have influenced bone formation close to the sinus mucosa. The inward displaced bone window supported bone formation close to the sinus mucosa only in the earliest period of healing, while the bone walls increased their influence over time. The lack of increased new bone percentage over time in the most central regions of the elevated sinus mucosa do not support the hypothesis that the sinus mucosa may express its potential in bone formation. It can be speculated that the new bone found in the intermediate and middle regions of the control sites in the earliest period of healing might be due to residual of bone from the osteotomy. CONCLUSIONS: Very small amounts of new bone were found subjacent to the sinus mucosa, mostly formed from the bone walls, the inward displaced bone window or from possible bone residues from the osteotomy procedures. The lack of increased new bone percentage over time in the most central regions of the elevated sinus mucosa indicates that the contribution to bone formation provided by the sinus mucosa is limited.

RESUMO

Sarcomeric contraction in cardiomyocytes serves as the basis for the heart's pump functions. It has generally been considered that in cardiac muscle as well as in skeletal muscle, sarcomeres equally contribute to myofibrillar dynamics in myocytes at varying loads by producing similar levels of active and passive force. In the present study, we expressed α-actinin-AcGFP in Z-disks to analyze dynamic behaviors of sequentially connected individual sarcomeres along a myofibril in a left ventricular (LV) myocyte of the in vivo beating mouse heart. To quantify the magnitude of the contribution of individual sarcomeres to myofibrillar dynamics, we introduced the novel parameter "contribution index" (CI) to measure the synchrony in movements between a sarcomere and a myofibril (from -1 [complete asynchrony] to 1 [complete synchrony]). First, CI varied markedly between sarcomeres, with an average value of ∼0.3 during normal systole. Second, when the movements between adjacent sarcomeres were asynchronous (CI < 0), a sarcomere and the ones next to the adjacent sarcomeres and farther away moved in synchrony (CI > 0) along a myofibril. Third, when difference in LV pressure in diastole and systole (ΔLVP) was lowered to <10 mm Hg, diastolic sarcomere length increased. Under depressed conditions, the movements between adjacent sarcomeres were in marked asynchrony (CI, -0.3 to -0.4), and, as a result, average CI was linearly decreased in association with a decrease in ΔLVP. These findings suggest that in the left ventricle of the in vivo beating mouse heart, (1) sarcomeres heterogeneously contribute to myofibrillar dynamics due to an imbalance of active and passive force between neighboring sarcomeres, (2) the force imbalance is pronounced under depressed conditions coupled with a marked increase in passive force and the ensuing tug-of-war between sarcomeres, and (3) sarcomere synchrony via the distal intersarcomere interaction regulates the heart's pump function in coordination with myofibrillar contractility.

RESUMO

An antral pseudocyst (AP) is a common well-defined 'dome-shaped' faintly radiopaque lesion of the maxillary sinus, and usually does not require treatment in asymptomatic patients. However, when sinus floor augmentation is required to increase bone volume for implant installation, the elevation of the sinus mucosa might drive the AP against the ostium. This might cause its obstruction and, as possible consequence, sinusitis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and tomographic conditions of APs to identify a predictable cyst removal that might allow a safety sinus floor augmentation. A total of 52 maxillary sinuses in 46 patients (mean age 55.1 years) presenting AP were examined by cone beam computed tomographies (CBCTs). A two-stage approach was applied. At the first surgery, the cystic lesions were further inspected by an endoscope through the antrostomy, and histopathological diagnosis of the removed tissues was carried out. After the confirmation of decrease of the swelling of sinus membrane by CBCT, the sinus floor augmentation was performed, at least four months after cyst removal. The color and transparency of the 86 cystic lesions were classified into 4 types. The whitish transparent cysts were 34 (39.5%), the yellowish transparent cysts were 18 (20.9%), the dark purple transparent cysts were 8 (9.3%) and the milky-white opaque cysts were 26 (30.2%). The contents of the 60 (69.8%) transparent cysts were serous fluid, but those of milky-white cysts were composed of viscous or elastic soft tissues, and the aspiration of the contents was unsuccessful. The analysis of the preoperative CBCT did not provide certainty on the contents of the cystic lesions. All cystic lesions were diagnosed as AP, and an infection was identified in one AP, presenting marked infiltration of the inflammatory cells. Considering the difficulties of performing a correct diagnosis of the AP content by a CBCT analysis, the risk of failure of the surgery that creates severe afflictions to the patients, and the necessity of a histological evaluation of the cyst, a two-stage surgery appeared to be the most reliable procedure.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To examine the reaction of mucosa over time to a close contact with biomaterial after sinus elevation performed with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) granules of two different sizes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bilateral sinus mucosa elevation was performed in 18 New Zealand rabbits through access on the nasal dorsum. DBBM with granule dimensions of either 1 to 2 mm (large group) or 0.250 to 1.0 mm (small group) were used to randomly fill the subantral hollow spaces. Biopsy specimens of the experimental sites from six animals in each group were obtained 2, 4, and 8 weeks after the surgery. RESULTS: The integrity of the sinus mucosa was clinically evaluated during surgery using a ×2.5 magnifying visual device. The sinus mucosa in contact with the biomaterial granules was found to be thinned compared with the pristine mucosa in all periods examined. Three hundred fifty-two thinned zones were found considering all 36 sinuses treated. Perforations of the sinus mucosa with extrusion of granules toward the sinus were observed, increasing in number over time. In the 8-week healing period, five perforations in three sinuses and eight perforations in four sinuses were found in the large and small groups, respectively. No differences were seen between the large and small groups. The differences between 2 and 8 weeks were statistically significant for the thinned mucosa width in both the large and the small groups and for the number of sinuses and perforations for the small group. CONCLUSION: Thinning zones and perforations of the sinus mucosa were seen increasing in number over time in regions in contact with graft granules in both the large and small groups.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recently, it has become possible to analyze implant placement position using the digital matching data of optical impression data of the oral cavity or plaster models with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data, and create a highly accurate surgical guide. It has been reported that CBCT measurements were smaller than the actual values, termed shrinkage. Matching of digital data is reliable when the plaster model or intraoral impression values show shrinkage at the same rate as the CBCT data. However, if the shrinkage rate is significantly different, the obtained digital data become unreliable. To clarify digital matching reliability, we examined dimensional reproducibility and shrinkage in measurements obtained with a model scanner, intra-oral scanner (iOS), and CBCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three implants that were arranged in a triangle were fixed in an acrylic plate. The distance between each implants were measured using model scanner, iOS, and CBCT. The actual size measured by electronic caliper was regarded as control. RESULTS: All values measured with CBCT were significantly smaller than that of model scanner, iOS, and control (p<0.001). The model scanner shrinkage was 0.37-0.39%, iOS shrinkage was 0.9-1.4%, and CBCT shrinkage was 1.8-6.9%. There were statistically significant differences among the shrinkage with iOS, CBCT, and model scanner (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Our findings showed that all measurements obtained with those modalities showed shrinkage as compared to the actual values. In addition, CBCT shrinkage was largest among three different measuring methods. They indicated that data matching between CBCT and scanner measurements requires attention in regard to the reliability of values obtained with those devices.

RESUMO

ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) granules are commonly used materials in dentistry or orthopedic surgery. However, further improvements are required to raise the operability and bone-forming ability of ß-TCP granules in a clinical setting. Recently, we developed epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-modified gelatin sponges as a novel biomaterial for bone regeneration. However, there is no study on using the above material for preparing hydrogel incorporating ß-TCP granules. Here, we demonstrate that vacuum heating treatment induced thermal cross-linking in gelatin sponges modified with EGCG and incorporating ß-TCP granules (vhEc-GS-ß) so that the hydrogels prepared from vhEc-GS-ß showed high stability, ß-TCP granule retention, operability, and cytocompatibility. Additionally, microcomputed tomography morphometry revealed that the hydrogels from vhEc-GS-ß had significantly higher bone-forming ability than ß-TCP alone. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining demonstrated that the number of osteoclasts increased at three weeks in defects treated with the hydrogels from vhEc-GS-ß compared with that around ß-TCP alone. The overall results indicate that thermal cross-linking treatment for the preparation of sponges (precursor of hydrogels) can be a promising process to enhance the bone-forming ability. This insight should provide a basis for the development of novel materials with good operativity and bone-forming ability for bone regenerative medicine.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in children is often associated with poor morbidity and mortality and exhibits distinct pathological entities from those of adult DCM. Owing to the limited number of patients and the lack of a good animal model, the molecular mechanisms underlying pediatric DCM remain poorly understood. The purpose of this study is to establish an animal model of neonatal DCM and identify early progression factors. METHODS: Cardiac phenotypes and comprehensive gene expression profiles in homozygous ΔK210 knock-in (TNNT2ΔK210/ΔK210) mice were analyzed and compared to TNNT2+/ΔK210 and wild-type mice at 0 days and 1 week of age. RESULTS: Immediately after birth, the cardiac weight in TNNT2ΔK210/ΔK210 mice was already increased compared to that in TNNT2+/ΔK210 and wild-type mice. Echocardiographic examination of 0-day-old and 1-week-old TNNT2ΔK210/ΔK210 mice revealed similar phenotypes of pediatric DCM. In addition, several genes were significantly upregulated in the ventricular tissues of TNNT2ΔK210/ΔK210 mice, and the KEGG PATHWAY analysis revealed several important pathways such as cancer and focal adhesion that might be associated with the pathogenesis and development of DCM. CONCLUSIONS: TNNT2ΔK210/ΔK210 mice have already developed DCM at birth, indicating that they should be an excellent animal model to identify early progression factors of DCM. IMPACT: TNNT2ΔK210/ΔK210 mice are excellent animal model for DCM. TNNT2ΔK210/ΔK210 mice are excellent animal model to identify early progression factors of DCM. KEGG PATHWAY analysis revealed that several important pathways such as cancer and focal adhesion might be associated with the pathogenesis and development of neonatal DCM.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Self-care and professional care of implants may prove difficult for elderly people who require nursing care. However, the actual state of care and problems remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the actual state of implant problems in elderly people living in their own home or in a nursing home who received visiting dental treatment. METHODS: We mailed questionnaire survey forms to 2339 representatives or specialists who were members of the Japanese Society of Oral Implantology, the Japanese Society of Gerodontology or the Japan Prosthodontic Society. We narrowed down the respondents to those who provided visiting dental treatment, and analyzed the actual state of implants observed during visiting dental treatment (type, care, problems, countermeasures, etc.). RESULTS: Of the 924 dentists who responded to the questionnaire survey, 291 (22%) provided visiting dental treatment. While the majority of implant types encountered in the previous 12 months were root-form implants, there were still a certain number of blade and subperiosteal implants. Daily implant care involved mostly cleaning with a toothbrush + auxiliary tools. The most frequent implant problems encountered in the past were difficulty in cleaning and peri-implantitis. Medication and antiphlogistic treatment were most frequently adopted as countermeasures to implant problems, followed by observation. When we classified the results into those for the dentists who provided implant treatment and those for the dentists who did not, we found that many of the dentists who did not provide implant treatment opted for observation or medication, while those who provided implant treatment also implemented removal of superstructure, retightening of screws, repair and so forth. CONCLUSIONS: We found that many of the implant troubles encountered by dentists who provided visiting dental care were difficulty in cleaning or peri-implantitis, and that the actions taken against these troubles varied depending on the experience of the dentist performing the implant treatment. Our study also revealed that dentists who provide visiting dental care need to acquire knowledge and skills of implant treatment, to have actions prepared in case they encounter such cases, or to closely coordinate with dentists who specialize in implants.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In a previous experimental study, new bone was found growing within granules of HA/ß-TCP. In vitro and experimental studies have shown increased protein adsorption and cell adhesion graft material bioactivated with Argon plasma. The aims of the present experiment were to study new bone ingrowth into ß-TCP/HA granules used as filler material for sinus lifting and the influence on the healing of the bioactivation of the graft with argon plasma. METHODS: Sinus lifting was carried out in 20 rabbits using 60% HA and 40% ß-TCP as filler material either bio-activated with argon plasma (plasma group) or left untreated (control group). The antrostomies were closed with collagen membranes. Biopsies representing the healing after 2 and 10 weeks were collected, and ground sections were prepared for histomorphometric analyses. Various regions of the elevated space were analyzed both around (outer bone; OB) and inside (interpenetrating bone network, IBN) the graft particles. RESULTS: After 2 weeks of healing, 8.2% and 9.3% (n = 10; p = 0.635) of total new bone (OB + IBN) was found in the plasma and control groups, respectively. Small fractions of IBN were found, spreading from the periphery inward of the graft particles. After 10 weeks of healing, the total new bone was 34.0% in the plasma and 31.3% in Control groups (n = 9; p = 0.594). The respective fractions of IBN were 18.0% and 16.0%. New bone was penetrating from the peripheral regions inside the remnants of graft particles, where it was forming a network of bridges in continuity to the remnants of biomaterial through its porosities. The biomaterial decreased in proportion between 2 and 10 weeks from 52.1 to 28.3% in the plasma group, and from 52.5% to 31.9% in the control group. CONCLUSION: The bio-activation with argon plasma on a synthetic graft composed of 60% HA and 40% ß-TCP used as filler material for sinus lifting showed a tendency to improve bone formation; however, the difference with the control group was neither statistically significant nor clinically relevant.
