RESUMO

Porous metal (Pd and Co) and semiconductor (ZnO) nanowires, porous metal (Pt and Ni) nanotubes, and unique multiple Pt nanowires are prepared from a novel nanoconfined surfactant templated electrodeposition approach. More specifically, the overall diameter of nanowires or nanotubes is defined by the pore channels of membranes. Surfactant assembled structure nanoconfined within the pores of membranes is used to generate the porosity and to control the texture of the nanowires or nanotubes. As compared to solid nanowires and nanotubes, the porous nanowires and nanotubes exhibit unique properties. For example, porous cobalt nanowires show higher coercivity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ephedrine and amphetamine can cause substantial increases in systemic arterial pressure. However, the role of endogenous noradrenaline release in mediating the pressor response to ephedrine is controversial. Studies using pharmacologic agents to decrease the synthesis, storage, and release of catecholamines have supported both a direct and an indirect mechanism of action for ephedrine. The purpose of the present study was to determine if endogenous noradrenaline release is required for cardiovascular responses to ephedrine and amphetamine using a genetic mouse model. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Increases in systemic arterial pressure and heart rate in response to ephedrine and amphetamine were investigated and compared in dopamine beta-hydroxylase knockout (Dbh -/-) mice that cannot synthesize noradrenaline. Dbh +/- littermates have normal noradrenaline and adrenaline tissue levels, and served as controls in all experiments. KEY RESULTS: In Dbh -/- mice the increases in systemic arterial pressure and heart rate in response to i.v. injections of ephedrine were not impaired whereas responses to amphetamine were markedly reduced, when compared with responses in Dbh +/- mice. The pressor response to tyramine was abolished whereas pressor responses to noradrenaline, phenylephrine, dopamine, and angiotensin II were similar in Dbh -/- and Dbh +/- mice. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: The present results in Dbh -/- mice provide support for the hypothesis that pressor responses to ephedrine are directly mediated whereas responses to amphetamine are dependent on the release of noradrenaline and suggest that Dbh +/- and Dbh -/- mice are useful for the study of direct and indirect mechanisms.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study compared the value of contrast-enhanced helical computed tomography (CT), CT during arterioportography (CTAP), and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for staging patients with colorectal liver metastases. METHODS: One hundred and twenty patients with known or suspected colorectal liver metastases were evaluated prospectively. MRI and CTAP were performed within 3 weeks of CT in patients with potentially resectable tumours. Results of imaging were compared with findings at surgery, intraoperative ultrasonography and histological examination. RESULTS: Twenty patients were not considered for liver resection following CT. The remaining 100 patients underwent CT and CTAP, 85 of whom had CT, CTAP and MRI. The sensitivity and specificity were 73.0 and 96.5 per cent for CT, 87.1 and 89.3 per cent for CTAP, and 81.9 and 93.2 per cent for MRI. Positive predictive values were 89.7, 87.5 and 87.5 per cent respectively. Receiver-operator characteristic analysis gave an accuracy on a segment-by-segment analysis of 0.73 for CT, 0.87 for CTAP and 0.82 for MRI. Combining information from CT and CTAP, CT and MRI, or all three modalities, did not significantly increase the percentage of patients staged correctly (71, 72 and 76 per cent respectively). CONCLUSION: The diagnostic accuracy of spiral CT, MRI and CTAP was similar. Combining modalities did not improve accuracy.

RESUMO

The effects of peroxynitrite (ONOO-) on vascular responses were investigated in the systemic and hindquarters vascular bed and in the isolated perfused rat lung. Intravenous injections of ONOO- decreased systemic arterial pressure, and injections of ONOO- into the hindquarters decreased perfusion pressure in a dose-related manner. Injections of ONOO- into the lung perfusion circuit increased pulmonary arterial perfusion pressure. Responses to ONOO- were rapid in onset, short in duration, and repeatable without exhibiting tachyphylaxis. Repeated injections of ONOO- did not alter systemic, hindquarters, or pulmonary responses to endothelium-dependent vasodilators or other vasoactive agonists and did not alter the hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstrictor response. Injections of sodium nitrate or nitrite or decomposed ONOO- had little effect on vascular pressures. Pulmonary and hindquarters responses to ONOO- were not altered by a cyclooxygenase inhibitor in a dose that attenuated responses to arachidonic acid. These results demonstrate that ONOO- has significant pulmonary vasoconstrictor, systemic vasodepressor, and vasodilator activity; that short-term repeated exposure does impair vascular responsiveness; and that responses to ONOO- are not dependent on cyclooxygenase product release.

RESUMO

Asymmetry along the left-right axis of the embryo is a vital feature of vertebrate embryogenesis. In this study, we report the isolation and characterization of a bicoid-related homeobox gene, cPitx2, which displays left-right asymmetric expression during early chick embryogenesis. Asymmetric expression of cPitx2 is first detected at stage 7 and is restricted to mesodermal tissues on the left side of the embryo including the left sided lateral mesoderm, the left sided precardiac mesoderm, and the left half epimyocardium of the primitive heart. cPitx2 is also detected in the presumptive blood islands and endothelia of the embryonic blood vessels. Implantation of Sonic hedgehog (SHH) protein soaked beads on the right side of embryos induced ectopic cPitx2 expression on that side. Based on these observations, we suggest that cPitx2 is a component in SHH signaling pathway and plays a role in determining left-right asymmetry and in vasculogenesis during avian embryogenesis.

RESUMO

By using light microscopic immunocytochemistry and computer analysis, we have mapped the distributions of two calcium-binding proteins (CaBPs), calbindinD28k (CB) and parvalbumin (PV), in the rat superior colliculus (SC). The patterns of CaBP expression were complementary. A band of heavily labeled, medium-sized CB-immunoreactive cells (CB-cells) was centered in the optic layer (OL), whereas PV-immunoreactive cells (PV-cells) were found predominantly in the intermediate gray layer (IGL), where they were clustered within patches of PV-labeled fibers. The superficial gray layer (SGL) could be divided into two sublaminae. CB-cells were found mostly in the dorsal half of the SGL, whereas PV-cells were scattered throughout the ventral SGL and the dorsal OL. Most of the CaBP-immunoreactive cells in the SGL were small bipolar cells with vertically oriented dendrites; however, there were also some PV-cells with horizontally oriented dendrites. Quantitative analysis of the CaBP distributions reinforced our observations that these cells are distributed in complementary tiers that are not restricted to the traditional laminae. The size and shape of some of these tiers were determined from a three-dimensional reconstruction of serial sections. The complementarity of the CaBP-immunoreactive tiers was also confirmed by fluorescence microscopy of double-labeled sections, in which few if any double-labeled neurons were observed. Complementary tiers of CB-cells and PV-cells have been observed previously in the SC of the cat. The present results demonstrate them in another species and further suggest that there are functional sublaminae in the SC that can be distinguished by CaBP content.

RESUMO

Pulmonary emphysema can produce false-positive electrocardiographic (ECG) changes of anterior myocardial infarction (MI). This problem was not addressed in earlier studies of the Selvester 54 Criteria/32 Point QRS score for MI size. The purpose of this study was to examine an automated Hewlett Packard ECG Computer Language (HP-ECL) implementation of the QRS score in the following groups of subjects. Patients who had been studied for possible lung disease with pulmonary tests, including lung volumes, were divided into two groups: group 1 (n = 133), with abnormal tests (emphysema); and group 2 (n = 102), with normal tests (no emphysema). Two other groups were studied: group 3 (positive controls, n = 44), with greater than 3 QRS points for MI on ECG and documented coronary disease with wall motion abnormalities on angiography; and group 4 (negative controls, n = 146), 49 house staff and 97 clinically normal men. A frontal plane P axis greater than 65 separated 90% of patients with emphysema from those without. Of 133 patients with emphysema, 60 (45%) had greater than 3 QRS points for MI on ECG, mainly from Q criteria in aVL and V1-V3; decreased R criteria 1 in V2, V3, and V6; and abnormal R/S criteria in V4-V6. Using HP-ECL, the QRS score was readily modified so that when P axis was greater than 65 these MI size criteria were suppressed. This resulted in a more appropriate incidence of MI diagnoses: 2% (down from 45%) in emphysema patients, no change in specificity, and minor reduction in sensitivity to MI in infarct controls from 100% to 96%.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMO

A case of Haemophilus parainfluenzae urinary tract infection is reported, with clinical history and bacteriologic data. Other reports of this organism causing urinary tract infection could not be found. The importance of correlating data from clean-catch urine microscopic analysis, Gram stain, and culture is emphasized, together with the possible modes of spread in a compromised host.
