PURPOSE: Sarcopenia and vitamin D deficiency increase risk of disability outcomes associated with a million hip and knee replacements annually. The purpose of the present study was to identify protein and vitamin D inadequacy in arthroplasty patients, and observe the effect of supplementation on metabolic markers on protein and vitamin D status. METHODS: One hundred and eighty obese arthroplasty patients admitted for inpatient rehabilitation, positive for protein and vitamin D insufficiency, received supplemental protein and vitamin D. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Following supplementation, normalization of protein and vitamin D status was achieved. Nutrient supplementation during physical rehabilitation provided an efficient and effective means to reverse nutrient deficiency in an obese, orthopedic population. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Inpatient physical rehabilitation is an opportune environment for nurses to provide education and intervention of nutrient supplementation, which may lessen consequences of sarcopenic obesity and related frailty disorders.

The purpose of the study detailed in this article was to identify nutritional excesses and deficiencies of selected dietary nutrients for a sample of low-income African American mothers and their daughters. Anthropometrics, physical activity questionnaires, food frequency questionnaires, and 24-hour food recalls were collected from a sample of 108 African American mothers and daughters (n = 42 and n = 66, respectively). Results revealed information regarding nutritional deficiencies and excesses that may be useful for modifying nutrition education and services offered through nutrition assistance programs designed for people earning low incomes and receiving financial assistance.

The effect of fungal carbohydrases (Carbogen[C]) consumed with a meal replacement bar (MBR) on glucose metabolism and exercise performance was determined in 5 male competitive cyclists. After a 12-hour fast, subjects performed two 60-min cycling bouts at 80% VO2max followed by a time-to-exhaustion (TE) ride at 100% VO2max. One hour prior to each cycling bout, subjects ingested a MRB + 160-mg C or 160-mg CaCO3 placebo (PL) in a double-blind, counterbalanced fashion. Blood was drawn for determination of glucose, insulin, and lactate at: fasting, 1 hour post-feeding, minutes 30 and 60 of exercise, and after TE. Two-way ANOVA revealed a significant (p <.05) treatment and time effect for glucose, with C being higher than PL. Interaction effects were observed for insulin and lactate. An increase in TE (min) at 100% VO2max was observed in the C versus PL trial (6.3 3.4 vs. 4.4 2.9, p <.001). A MRB+C may benefit cyclists due to increased BG and improved exercise performance.
