OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), blood pressure, self-efficacy, and quality of life efficacy of using telecare services for community-dwelling people with diabetes. METHODS: Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PsycINFO, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Scopus databases were systematically searched from their inception dates to June 22, 2023. Two evaluators independently selected and evaluated eligible studies. A protocol was registered in PROSPERO. RESULTS: An analysis of 17 studies that included 3586 subjects showed that telecare significantly improved the management of patients with diabetes. Compared to controls, intervention care had significant benefits regarding HbA1c (MD = -0.30, 95 % CI = -0.44 - -0.17, 16 studies), systolic blood pressure (MD = -2.45, 95 % CI = -4.53 - -0.36, P = 0.02), self-efficacy (MD = 0.36, 95 % CI = 0.04 - 0.67, P = 0.03) and quality of life (MD = 0.37, 95 % CI = 0.05 - 0.70, P = 0.02). However, diastolic blood pressure (MD = -1.37, 95 % CI = -3.34 - -0.61, P = 0.17) was not found to be significantly affected. CONCLUSIONS: Telecare is effective in improving self-management among community-dwelling people with diabetes, suggesting an effective means for them to achieve self-management.

This study aimed to explore the genetic basis of walking ability and potentially related performance traits in turkey purebred populations. Phenotypic, pedigree, and genomic datasets from 2 turkey lines hatched between 2010 and 2023 were included in the study. Walking ability data, defined based on a scoring system ranging from 1 (worst) to 6 (best), were collected on 192,019 animals of a female line and 235,461 animals of a male line. Genomic information was obtained for 46,427 turkeys (22,302 from a female line and 24,125 from a male line) using a 65K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panel. Variance components and heritability for walking ability were estimated. Furthermore, genetic and phenotypic correlations among walking ability, mortality and disorders, and performance traits were calculated. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was also conducted to identify SNPs associated with walking ability. Walking ability is moderately heritable (0.23 ± 0.01) in both turkey lines. The genetic correlations between walking ability and the other evaluated traits ranged from -0.02 to -0.78, with leg defects exhibiting the strongest negative correlation with walking ability. In the female line, 31 SNPs were associated with walking ability and overlapped with 116 genes. These positional genes are linked to 6 gene ontology (GO) terms. Notably, genes such as CSRP2, DDX1, RHBDL1, SEZ6L, and CTSK are involved in growth, development, locomotion, and bone disorders. GO terms, including fibronectin binding (GO:0001968), peptide cross-linking (GO:0018149), and catabolic process (GO:0009057), are directly linked with mobility. In the male line, 66 markers associated with walking ability were identified and overlapped with 281 genes. These genes are linked to 12 GO terms. Genes such as RB1CC1, TNNI1, MSTN, FN1, SIK3, PADI2, ERBB4, B3GNT2, and BACE1 are associated with cell growth, myostatin development, and disorders. GO terms in the male line are predominantly related to lipid metabolism. In conclusion, walking ability is moderately heritable in both populations. Furthermore, walking ability can be enhanced through targeted genetic selection, emphasizing its relevance to both animal welfare and productivity.

AIM: To determine the effectiveness of brief reminiscence-based psychosocial interventions in alleviating psychological distress in cancer patients. BACKGROUND: Cancer patients suffer tremendous psycho-spiritual pain, which affects their quality of life. Brief reminiscence-based psychosocial interventions have demonstrated positive effects on the mental health of cancer patients; however, the efficacy of these interventions has been inconsistent. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: This review was conducted and reported in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 checklist provided by the EQUATOR network. The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PsycINFO, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL and Scopus databases were systematically searched from inception to 27 November 2022 to identify randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published in English. RESULTS: Twenty studies involving 1744 cancer participants were included. The meta-analysis showed statistically significant effects of brief reminiscence-based psychosocial interventions on hope, anxiety and depression at post-intervention. A separate analysis revealed that brief reminiscence-based psychosocial interventions had a sustainable effect on hope, spiritual well-being, anxiety and depression at 1 month after the intervention. However, no statistically significant effect on quality of life was found in our study either immediately after the intervention or at 1 month. CONCLUSIONS: Brief reminiscence-based psychosocial interventions can significantly reduce anxiety and depressive symptoms and improve hope and spiritual well-being in cancer patients. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This study further supports that brief reminiscence-based psychosocial interventions should be incorporated into the routine care of cancer patients to address their psychosocial distress. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: All authors of this article contributed to the study conception and design. All authors of the included studies provided original data for this paper.

Cancer genomes from patients with African (AFR) ancestry have been poorly studied in clinical research. We leverage two large genomic cohorts to investigate the relationship between genomic alterations and AFR ancestry in six common cancers. Cross-cancer type associations, such as an enrichment of MYC amplification with AFR ancestry in lung, breast, and prostate cancers, and depletion of BRAF alterations are observed in colorectal and pancreatic cancers. There are differences in actionable alterations, such as depletion of KRAS G12C and EGFR L858R, and enrichment of ROS1 fusion with AFR ancestry in lung cancers. Interestingly, in lung cancer, KRAS mutations are less common in both smokers and non-smokers with AFR ancestry, whereas the association of TP53 mutations with AFR ancestry is only seen in smokers, suggesting an ancestry-environment interaction that modifies driver rates. Our study highlights the need to increase representation of patients with AFR ancestry in drug development and biomarker discovery.

BACKGROUND: Exercise is a promising nonpharmacological treatment for improving depression in older adults with MCI, but it is unclear which exercises are most effective. The objectives of this study were to compare and rank the effectiveness of various exercise interventions for depression in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and to investigate the effects of exercise on depression. METHODS: The PRISMA-NMA guidelines were applied to the development and reporting of review criteria. The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PsycINFO, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Scopus databases were systematically searched by combining search terms for randomized controlled trial studies (RCTs) published in English from individual databases with the earliest available date set to March 10, 2023. Two evaluators independently selected and evaluated eligible studies of changes in depression in older adults with MCI after an exercise intervention. A protocol for this systematic review was registered in PROSPERO (Registration number: CRD42022377052). RESULTS: A network meta-analysis was conducted on 15 eligible RCTs consisting of 4271 subjects, including aerobic (n = 6), mind-body (n = 6) and multicomponent (n = 3) exercise trials. Compared to controls, mind-body exercise showed the strongest improvement in depressive symptoms (SMD = -0.63, 95% CI: -1.13, -0.14), followed by aerobic (SMD = -0.57, 95% CI: -0.88, -0.26) and multicomponent exercise (SMD = -0.53, 95% CI: -1.02, -0.03). Notably, there were no statistically significant differences between exercise types: aerobic vs. mind-body (SMD = 0.06, 95% PrI: -0.71, 0.84), multicomponent vs. mind-body (SMD = 0.11, 95% PrI: -0.75, 0.97), or multicomponent vs. aerobic (SMD = 0.04, 95% PrI: -0.771, 0.86). CONCLUSIONS: In this review, we found that mind-body exercise was most effective when compared to conventional controls and that multiple exercise modalities (aerobic, mind-body, and multicomponent exercise) had beneficial and comparable effects in reducing depressive states in older adults with MCI. These findings may guide clinical geriatric stakeholders and allied health professionals in providing more scientifically optimal exercise prescriptions for older adults with MCI. In the future, more high-quality, long-term clinical trials are needed to support the exploration of longer-term dynamic effects.

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential non-linear relationship between growth and walking ability (WA). The phenotypic data included body weights at 12 and 20 weeks and WA at 20 weeks of age measured on 276,059 male turkeys. The growth rate at three age periods (0 to 12, 12 to 20 and 0 to 20 weeks) was calculated. Each bird was assigned to one of the quartiles of the growth rate distribution for each age period. Between the first and fourth quartiles, the incidence of score 1 (bad WA) increased by 31, 18, and 33% for the first, second, and third age periods, respectively. For good WA (scores 4, 5, and 6), the incidence decreased by 55, 66, and 72% between the first and fourth quartiles for the first, second, and third age periods, respectively. Estimates of heritability of WA ranged between 0.18 and 0.26. The genetic correlations between adjacent growth rate quartiles were high and decayed as the interval between quartiles increased. The magnitude of the variation in the incidence of walking scores and genetic correlations across the growth rate quartiles point towards a non-linear relationship between growth and mobility suggesting other factors may affect walking ability.

BACKGROUND: Drought resistance is a complex characteristic closely related to the severity and duration of stress. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) has no distinct drought tolerance but often encounters drought stress seasonally. Although the response of perennial ryegrass to either extreme or moderate drought stress has been investigated, a comprehensive understanding of perennial ryegrass response to both conditions of drought stress is currently lacking. RESULTS: In this study, we investigated the genetic variation in drought resistance in 18 perennial ryegrass varieties under both extreme and moderate drought conditions. The performance of these varieties exhibited obvious diversity, and the survival of perennial ryegrass under severe stress was not equal to good growth under moderate drought stress. 'Sopin', with superior performance under both stress conditions, was the best-performing variety. Transcriptome, physiological, and molecular analyses revealed that 'Sopin' adapted to drought stress through multiple sophisticated mechanisms. Under stress conditions, starch and sugar metabolic enzymes were highly expressed, while CslA was expressed at low levels in 'Sopin', promoting starch degradation and soluble sugar accumulation. The expression and activity of superoxide dismutase were significantly higher in 'Sopin', while the activity of peroxidase was lower, allowing for 'Sopin' to maintain a better balance between maintaining ROS signal transduction and alleviating oxidative damage. Furthermore, drought stress-related transcriptional and posttranscriptional regulatory mechanisms, including the upregulation of transcription factors, kinases, and E3 ubiquitin ligases, facilitate abscisic acid and stress signal transduction. CONCLUSION: Our study provides insights into the resistance of perennial ryegrass to both extreme and moderate droughts and the underlying mechanisms by which perennial ryegrass adapts to drought conditions.

The purpose of this study was to explore plasma metabolite levels in young healthy pigs and their potential association with disease resilience and estimate genetic and phenotypic correlation with the change in lymphocyte concentration following disease challenge. Plasma samples were collected from 968 healthy nursery pigs over 15 batches at an average of 28 ± 3.23 d of age. Forty-four metabolites were identified and quantified by nuclear magnetic resonance. Pigs were then introduced into a natural disease challenge barn, and were classified into four groups based on the growth rate of each animal in the grow-to-finish phase (GFGR) and treatment rate (TR): resilient (RES), average (MID), susceptible (SUS), and dead (pigs that died before harvest). Blood samples were collected from all pigs before and 2 wk after disease challenge and complete blood count was determined. Environmental enrichment (inedible point source objects) was provided for half of the pigs in seven batches (N = 205) to evaluate its impact on resilience and metabolite concentrations. Concentration of all metabolites was affected by batch, while entry age affected the concentration of 16 metabolites. The concentration of creatinine was significantly lower for pigs classified as "dead" and "susceptible" when compared to "average" (P < 0.05). Pigs that received enrichment had significantly lower concentrations of six metabolites compared with pigs that did not receive enrichment (P ≤ 0.05). Both, group classification and enrichment affected metabolites that are involved in the same pathways of valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis and degradation. Resilient pigs had higher increase in lymphocyte concentration after disease challenge. The concentration of plasma l-α-aminobutyric acid was significantly negatively genetically correlated with the change in lymphocyte concentration following challenge. In conclusion, creatinine concentration in healthy nursery pigs was lower in pigs classified as susceptible or dead after disease challenge, whilst l-α-aminobutyric may be a genetic biomarker of lymphocyte response after pathogen exposure, and both deserve further investigation. Batch, entry age, and environmental enrichment were important factors affecting the concentration of metabolites and should be taken into consideration in future studies.


The focus of this study was to explore plasma metabolite levels in young healthy pigs and their potential association with health outcome classification following the exposure to a polymicrobial disease challenge. In addition, we explored the effect of the environmental enrichment on metabolite concentrations. Finally, we estimated genetic and phenotypic correlations between metabolites and the magnitude of change in lymphocytes levels following exposure to a polymicrobial disease challenge. We found that concentration of creatinine was lower in pigs that died before marketing, classified as "dead" and susceptible when compared to average group. This indicates that creatinine can be used as an early indicator of death and/or susceptibility of disease in pigs. Providing environmental enrichment affected the concentration of six metabolites and branched chain amino acids index. Such results would be very useful to design environmental enrichment strategies when pigs are challenged by disease in commercial farms. The magnitude of change in lymphocytes level was negatively genetically correlated with l-α-aminobutyric acid. This result indicates that l-αs-aminobutyric acid can be an early indicator of the magnitude of change in lymphocytes level. Such indicator can be collected from nucleus breeding herds in healthy animals and could provide an early biomarker of resilience.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) are a class of noncoding single-stranded RNAs that can regulate gene expression by binding to the untranslated sequences at the 3 ' end of messenger RNAs. The microRNA-34 family is dysregulated in various human diseases. It is considered as a tumor-suppressive microRNA because of its synergistic effect with the well-known tumor suppressor p53. As a member of the miRNA-34 family, miR-34b-5p serves as a powerful regulator of a suite of cellular activities, including cell growth, multiplication, development, differentiation, and apoptosis. It promotes or represses disease occurrence and progression by participating in some important signaling pathways. This review aimed to provide an overview and update on the differential expression and function of miR-34b-5p in pathophysiologic processes, especially cancer and injury. Additionally, miR-34b-5p-mediated clinical trials have indicated promising consequences for the therapies of carcinomatosis and injury. With the application of the first tumor-targeted microRNA drug based on miR-34a mimics, it can be inferred that miR-34b-5p may become a crucial factor in the therapy of various diseases. However, further studies on miR-34b-5p should shed light on its involvement in disease pathogenesis and treatment options.

Spherical cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), as a high value cellulose derivative, shows an excellent application potential in biomedicine, food packaging, energy storage, and many other fields due to its special structure. CNC is usually prepared by the mixed acid hydrolysis method from numerous cellulose raw materials. However, the pretreatment route in preparing spherical CNC from cellulose fiber is still used when choosing microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) as the raw material, which is not rigorous and economical. In this work, pretreatment effects on the properties of spherical CNC produced from MCC by mixed acid hydrolysis were systematically studied. Firstly, the necessity of the swelling process in pretreatment was examined. Secondly, the form effects of pretreated MCC (slurry or powder form) before acid hydrolysis in the preparation of spherical CNC were carefully investigated. The results show that the swelling process is not indispensable. Furthermore, the form of pretreated MCC also has a certain influence on the morphology, crystallinity, and thermal stability of spherical CNC. Thus, spherical CNC with different properties can be economically prepared from MCC by selecting different pretreatment routes through mixed acid hydrolysis.

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is an important turfgrass and gramineous forage widely grown in temperate regions around the world. However, its perennial nature leads to the inevitable exposure of perennial ryegrass to various environmental stresses on a seasonal basis and from year to year. Like other plants, perennial ryegrass has evolved sophisticated mechanisms to make appropriate adjustments in growth and development in order to adapt to the stress environment at both the physiological and molecular levels. A thorough understanding of the mechanisms of perennial ryegrass response to abiotic stresses is crucial for obtaining superior stress-tolerant varieties through molecular breeding. Over the past decades, studies of perennial ryegrass at the molecular and genetic levels have revealed a lot of useful information to understand the mechanisms of perennial ryegrass adaptation to an adverse environment. Unfortunately, molecular mechanisms by which perennial ryegrass adapts to abiotic stresses have not been reviewed thus far. In this review, we summarize the recent works on the genetic and molecular mechanisms of perennial ryegrass response to the major abiotic stresses (i.e., drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures) and discuss new directions for future studies. Such knowledge will provide valuable information for molecular breeding in perennial ryegrass to improve stress resistance and promote the sustainability of agriculture and the environment.

Microtubules are dynamic cytoskeleton structures playing fundamental roles in plant responses to salt stress. The precise mechanisms by which microtubule organization is regulated under salt stress are largely unknown. Here, we report that Arabidopsis thaliana MICROTUBULE-DESTABILIZING PROTEIN 25 (MDP25; also known as PLASMA MEMBRANE-ASSOCIATED CATION-BINDING PROTEIN 1 (PCaP1)) helps regulate microtubule organization. Under salt treatment, elevated cytosolic Ca2+ concentration caused MDP25 to partially dissociate from the plasma membrane, promoting microtubule depolymerization. When Ca2+ signaling was blocked by BAPTA-AM or LaCl3 , microtubule depolymerization in wild-type and MDP25-overexpressing cells was slower, while there was no obvious change in mdp25 cells. Knockout of MDP25 improved microtubule reassembly and was conducive to microtubule integrity under long-term salt treatment and microtubule recovery after salt stress. Moreover, mdp25 seedlings exhibited a higher survival rate under salt stress. The presence microtubule-disrupting reagent oryzalin or microtubule-stabilizing reagent paclitaxel differentially affected the survival rates of different genotypes under salt stress. MDP25 promoted microtubule instability by affecting the catastrophe and rescue frequencies, shrinkage rate and time in pause phase at the microtubule plus-end and the depolymerization rate at the microtubule minus-end. These findings reveal a role for MDP25 in regulating microtubule organization under salt treatment by affecting microtubule dynamics.

Disease resilience, defined as an animal's ability to maintain productive performance in the face of infection, provides opportunities to manage the polymicrobial challenge common in pig production. Disease resilience can deliver a number of benefits, including more sustainable production as well as improved animal health and the potential for reduced antimicrobial use. However, little progress has been made to date in the application of disease resilience in breeding programs due to a number of factors, including (1) confusion around definitions of disease resilience and its component traits disease resistance and tolerance, and (2) the difficulty in characterizing such a complex trait consisting of multiple biological functions and dynamic elements of rates of response and recovery from infection. Accordingly, this review refines the definitions of disease resistance, tolerance, and resilience based on previous studies to help improve the understanding and application of these breeding goals and traits under different scenarios. We also describe and summarize results from a "natural disease challenge model" designed to provide inputs for selection of disease resilience. The next steps for managing polymicrobial challenges faced by the pig industry will include the development of large-scale multi-omics data, new phenotyping technologies, and mathematical and statistical methods adapted to these data. Genome editing to produce pigs resistant to major diseases may complement selection for disease resilience along with continued efforts in the more traditional areas of biosecurity, vaccination and treatment. Altogether genomic approaches provide exciting opportunities for the pig industry to overcome the challenges provided by hard-to-manage diseases as well as new environmental challenges associated with climate change.

RATIONALE: Chromosome 18 long arm deletion syndrome is a group of clinical syndromes caused by partial or total genetic material deletion of the long arm of chromosome 18 (18q), whose clinical manifestations are related to presentation and developmental abnormalities in various aspects such as intelligence, face, and movement. Prenatal diagnosis of this syndrome is challenging because of its low incidence and uncharacteristic prenatal clinical performance. In this paper, 2 cases of partial deletion of 18q found in prenatal amniotic fluid examination by high-throughput sequencing were reported and analyzed. PATIENT CONCERNS: In patient 1, non-invasive prenatal gene detection at 21 + 2 weeks of gestation suggests a risk of trisomy 18. In patient 2, ultrasound examination at 21 + 2 weeks of gestation revealed a single live fetus, but it was difficult to pinpoint whether the fetus had only 1 umbilical artery to supply blood. DIAGNOSIS AND INTERVENTION: The 18q deletion syndrome was diagnosed by chromosome karyotype analysis and high-throughput sequencing. OUTCOMES: The pregnancies were terminated due to the abnormal chromosome. LESSON: This report adds novel variants to the genetic profile of 18q deletion, in order to enrich the genetic data of long arm deletion of 18 chromosomes and provide better services for pre-screening, diagnosis, and genetic counseling for this disease.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a neuroendocrine heterogeneous disease that frequently occurs in women of reproductive age, causing serious damage to the fertility, quality of life, and physical and mental health of patients. The current studies have proved that satisfactory endometrial receptivity is one of the conditions that must be met during the process of spermatovum position, adhesion and invasion, as well as the subsequent blastocyst division and embryo development. Women with PCOS may suffer a series of pathological processes such as changes in the expression levels of hormones and related receptors, imbalances in the proportion of miscellaneous cytokines, insulin resistance, low-grade chronic inflammation and endometrial morphological changes, which will damage endometrial receptivity from various aspects and obstruct fertilized egg nidation and embryonic development, thus causing adverse reproductive health events including infertility and abortion. This article reviews the research progress about characteristics and related influencing factors of endometrial receptivity in PCOS patients.

BACKGROUND: Disease resilience, which is the ability of an animal to maintain performance under disease, is important for pigs in commercial herds, where they are exposed to various pathogens. Our objective was to investigate population-level gene expression profiles in the blood of 912 healthy F1 barrows at ~ 27 days of age for associations with performance and health before and after their exposure to a natural polymicrobial disease challenge at ~ 43 days of age. RESULTS: Most significant (q < 0.20) associations of the level of expression of individual genes in blood of young healthy pigs were identified for concurrent growth rate and subjective health scores prior to the challenge, and for mortality, a combined mortality-treatment trait, and feed conversion rate after the challenge. Gene set enrichment analyses revealed three groups of gene ontology biological process terms that were related to disease resilience: 1) immune and stress response-related terms were enriched among genes whose increased expression was unfavorably associated with both pre- and post-challenge traits, 2) heme-related terms were enriched among genes that had favorable associations with both pre- and post-challenge traits, and 3) terms related to protein localization and viral gene expression were enriched among genes that were associated with reduced performance and health traits after but not before the challenge. CONCLUSIONS: Gene expression profiles in blood from young healthy piglets provide insight into their performance when exposed to disease and other stressors. The expression of genes involved in stress response, heme metabolism, and baseline expression of host genes related to virus propagation were found to be associated with host response to disease.

BACKGROUND: Genetic improvement for disease resilience is anticipated to be a practical method to improve efficiency and profitability of the pig industry, as resilient pigs maintain a relatively undepressed level of performance in the face of infection. However, multiple biological functions are known to be involved in disease resilience and this complexity means that the genetic architecture of disease resilience remains largely unknown. Here, we conducted genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of 465,910 autosomal SNPs for complete blood count (CBC) traits that are important in an animal's disease response. The aim was to identify the genetic control of disease resilience. RESULTS: Univariate and multivariate single-step GWAS were performed on 15 CBC traits measured from the blood samples of 2743 crossbred (Landrace × Yorkshire) barrows drawn at 2-weeks before, and at 2 and 6-weeks after exposure to a polymicrobial infectious challenge. Overall, at a genome-wise false discovery rate of 0.05, five genomic regions located on Sus scrofa chromosome (SSC) 2, SSC4, SSC9, SSC10, and SSC12, were significantly associated with white blood cell traits in response to the polymicrobial challenge, and nine genomic regions on multiple chromosomes (SSC1, SSC4, SSC5, SSC6, SSC8, SSC9, SSC11, SSC12, SSC17) were significantly associated with red blood cell and platelet traits collected before and after exposure to the challenge. By functional enrichment analyses using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) and literature review of previous CBC studies, candidate genes located nearby significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms were found to be involved in immune response, hematopoiesis, red blood cell morphology, and platelet aggregation. CONCLUSIONS: This study helps to improve our understanding of the genetic basis of CBC traits collected before and after exposure to a polymicrobial infectious challenge and provides a step forward to improve disease resilience.

Disease resilience is a valuable trait to help manage infectious diseases in livestock. It is anticipated that improved disease resilience will sustainably increase production efficiency, as resilient animals maintain their performance in the face of infection. The objective of this study was to identify phenotypes related to disease resilience using complete blood count (CBC) data from a wean-to-finish natural disease challenge model, established to mimic the disease pressure caused by many common pathogens at the commercial level of pig production. In total, 2433 F1 crossbred (Landrace × Yorkshire) barrows that went through the natural disease challenge model were classified into four groups (resilient, average, susceptible, and dead) based on their divergent responses in terms of growth and individual treatment. Three sets of blood samples for CBC analysis were drawn at 2-weeks before, and at 2- and 6-weeks after the challenge: Blood 1, Blood 3, and Blood 4 respectively. CBC of Blood 1 taken from healthy pigs before challenge did not show differences between groups. However, resilient animals were found to be primed to initiate a faster adaptive immune response and recover earlier following infection, with greater increases of lymphocyte concentration from Blood 1 to Blood 3 and for hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit from Blood 3 to Blood 4, but a lower neutrophil concentration from Blood 3 to Blood 4 than in susceptible and dead animals (FDR < 0.05). The CBC traits in response to the challenge were found to be heritable and genetically correlated with growth and treatment, which may indicate the potential for developing CBC under disease or commercial conditions as a phenotype in commercial systems as part of developing predictions for disease resilience.
