BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Psychological stress has been identified in some observational studies as a potential factor that may modify and affect periodontal diseases, but there are no similar data for peri-implantitis. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, IL-10, interferon (IFN)α inflammatory cytokines and the psychological stress-related markers, glucocorticoid receptor-α (GRα), and salivary α-amylase (sAA) gene expression levels in saliva samples obtained from healthy implants and peri-implantitis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included a total of 50 systemically healthy subjects. Peri-implant clinical parameters were recorded and psychological stress level was evaluated with the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HAD) and state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) questionnaire forms. Following the evaluations, the patients were divided into 4 groups according their stress and clinical status (Ia, Ib, IIa, IIb). IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-10, IFNα, GRα, sAA gene expression levels in the saliva samples were quantified by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). RESULTS: In the group of peri-implantitis who had a high score in stress level assessment scales, significantly higher IL-1ß, IL-6, sAA expression levels were observed (p < 0.001). The IL-10 gene expression levels were lower in the groups with a high score in the stress level assessment scales (p < 0.001). GRα gene was expressed at lower levels in the group of peri-implantitis who had a high score in stress level assessment scales but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.065). CONCLUSION: The study findings suggest that psychological stress may increase the inflammation associated with peri-implantitis by affecting cytokine expression levels. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: To prevent peri-implantitis or reduce its prevalence, it could be beneficial to evaluate stress levels and identify individuals experiencing stress.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine the treatment outcomes and related factors in locally advanced sinonasal cancer across Turkiye. METHODS: Twelve centers participants of the Turkish Society for Radiation Oncology Head and Neck Study Group attended the study. One hundred and ninety-four patients treated with intensity-modulated radiation therapy between 2001 and 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. The survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Acute and late toxicity were recorded per Common Toxicity Criteria for Adverse Events V4.0. RESULTS: The median age was 58 years and 70% were male. The majority of tumors were located in maxillary sinus (59%). Most of the patients (%83) had T3 and T4A disease. Fifty-three percent of patients were in stage 4A. Radiotherapy was administered to 80% of the patients in the adjuvant settings. Median 66 Gy dose was administered in median 31 fractions. Chemotherapy was administered concomitantly with radiotherapy in 45% of the patients mostly with weekly cisplatin. No grade ≥4 acute and late toxicity was observed. The median follow-up was 43 months. The 5-year and 10-year overall survival (OS); locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRFS); distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), and progression-free survival (PFS) rates were 61% and 47%; 69% and 61%; 72%, and 69%, and 56% and 49%, respectively. In the multivariate analysis, several factors demonstrated significant influence on OS, such as performance status, surgery, and lymph node involvement. Moreover, surgery was the key prognostic factor for LRFS. For DMFS, lymph node involvement and surgical margin were found to be influential factors. In addition, performance status and lymph node involvement were identified as significantly affecting PFS. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, the authors obtained promising results with IMRT. Performance status, lymph node involvement, and surgery emerged as the primary factors significantly influencing OS.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer is the 4th most frequent cause of cancer-related deaths, with a 5-year survival rate of less than 40%. In recent years, many artificial intelligence applications have been used in the field of gastric cancer through their effective computing and learning ability. In this study, we aim to develop a software that can accurately detect overall survival in gastric cancer cases with the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning. METHODS: The study included 34417 patients' data diagnosed with gastric cancer between 2010 and 2015. The main hypothesis in the study was overall survival (OS) in years, defined from the date of diagnosis to the date of death or, for living patients, the last control date. In addition to survival, other variables selected for the analyzes were age at diagnosis, race, gender, behavior, primary site, grade, histology, T stage, N stage, M stage and size of the tumor, vital status, and follow-up time (months). RESULTS: The median overall survival of the patients was found to be 15.00±0.20 years. Median life expectancy was found to be 21.00±0.85 years for those younger than 50 years of age, 20.00±0.43 years for those aged 50-69 years, and 10.00±0.22 years for those aged 70 and over. Especially artificial intelligence techniques such as machine learning and deep learning lead to remarkable developments in the field of gastric cancer. CONCLUSION: With the ability to compute and learn we think that use of artificial intelligence will be revolutionary in gastric cancer in terms of diagnosis and prognosis. AIM: T1-weighted contrast-enhanced (T1+C) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences are usually used for planning meningioma treatment via Gamma-Knife radiosurgery (GKRS). However, practitioners should refrain from using contrast agents because of allergies or other systemic diseases. The fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition (FIESTA) sequence is a high-resolution T2-weighted MRI sequence with a high signal-to-noise ratio that provides good image contrast without using any contrast agent. However, in T1+C sequences, the tumor size appears more prominent due to the contrast agent effect, especially in meningiomas with sinus invasion. Thus, normal anatomical structures may be exposed to radiation. Therefore, we aimed to compare T1+C with FIESTA MRI sequences to protect healthy brain tissue during meningioma treatment with GKRS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: After reviewing the data of 54 patients with solitary meningioma who underwent GKRS between January 2020 and June 2022, demographic characteristics were noted, tumor volumes on T1+C and FIESTA MRI sequences were measured, and sequences were compared. The patients were then divided into two groups according to the presence of invasion to intracranial venous sinuses (groups 1 and 2, respectively). SPSS 11.5 software was used for data analysis, with the level of significance set at 0.05. RESULTS: While no significant age and tumor size differences were observed between groups 1 and 2, sinus invasion was significantly higher among males. Tumor volumes measured in both groups were significantly smaller on FIESTA sequences than on T1+C sequences. CONCLUSION: The T1+C sequence has been the primary imaging method because of meningiomas\' high contrast enhancement feature. However, the T1+C sequence during GKRS planning is an effective imaging method in treating meningiomas; FIESTA sequences can more precisely delineate the tumor border. In this study, we consider that using the FIESTA/CISS sequence MRI for planning meningioma therapy with Gamma-Knife can reduce target volume and prevent irradiation of healthy brain tissue.

ABSTRACT. Patients with Parkinson's disease (PwP) have face recognition difficulties. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the difficulties of PwP in recognizing masked faces during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A total of 64 PwP, 58 age-matched older healthy controls (OHCs), and 61 younger healthy controls (YHCs) were included in the study. The Benton Face Recognition Test - short form (BFRT-sf) and the 13-item questionnaire on face recognition difficulties due to masks during the pandemic developed by the authors were applied to all three study groups. Results: Both the PwP and OHC groups scored worse in BFRT-sf when compared with the YHC group (p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). The number of those who had difficulty in recognizing people seen every day and the number of those who asked people to remove their masks because they did not recognize them were higher in the PWP group (p=0.026 and p=0.002, respectively). The number of individuals who looked at the posture and gait of people when they did not recognize their masked faces and those who stated that this difficulty affected their daily lives were higher in the OHC group (p=0.002 and p=0.009, respectively). The number of participants whose difficulty in recognizing masked faces decreased over time was higher in the YHC group (p=0.003). Conclusions: The PwP group demonstrated similar performance to their peers but differed from the YHC group in recognizing masked faces. Knowing difficulties experienced by elderly people in recognizing people who are masked can increase awareness on this issue and enhance their social interaction in pandemic conditions through measures to be taken.


RESUMO. Pacientes com doença de Parkinson (PcP) têm dificuldades de reconhecimento facial. Objetivo: Avaliamos as dificuldades de PcP em reconhecer rostos mascarados durante a pandemia de COVID-19. Métodos: Incluímos 64 PcP, 58 controles saudáveis ​​mais velhos (CSVs) pareados por idade, 61 controles saudáveis mais jovens (CSJs) no estudo. O Benton Face Recognition Test-short form (BFRT-sf) e o questionário de 13 itens sobre dificuldades de reconhecimento facial devido a máscaras durante a pandemia desenvolvido pelos autores foram aplicados a todos os três grupos de estudo. Resultados: Ambos os grupos PcP e CSV tiveram pior pontuação no BFRT-sf quando comparados com o grupo CSJ (p<0,001 e p<0,001, respectivamente). O número daqueles que tiveram dificuldade em reconhecer as pessoas atendidas todos os dias e o número daqueles que pediram para as pessoas retirarem suas máscaras por não as reconhecer foram maiores no grupo PcP (p=0,026 e p=0,002, respectivamente). O número de indivíduos que olharam para a postura e marcha das pessoas quando não reconheceram seus rostos mascarados e aqueles que afirmaram que essa dificuldade afetou seu cotidiano foi maior no grupo CSV (p=0,002 e p=0,009, respectivamente). O número de participantes cuja dificuldade em reconhecer rostos mascarados diminuiu ao longo do tempo foi maior no grupo CSJ (p=0,003). Conclusões: O grupo PcP demonstrou desempenho semelhante aos seus pares, mas diferiu do grupo CSJ no reconhecimento de rostos mascarados. Conhecer as dificuldades vivenciadas pelos idosos em reconhecer as pessoas mascaradas pode aumentar a conscientização sobre essa questão e potencializar sua interação social em condições de pandemia por meio de medidas a serem tomadas.
