RESUMO

Ligaments anatomy often show a huge anatomy variations between species and individuals. For example calcaneofibular ligaments (CFL) characterize the great variability of morphological shape or presence of additional bands. The aim of this study was to propose first anatomical classification of CFL concerning on human fetuses. We investigated thirty spontaneously-aborted human fetuses aged 18-38 weeks of gestation at death. Sixty lower limbs (30 left and 30 right) fixed in 10% formalin solution were examined. The morphological variability of CFL was assessed. Four types of CFL morphology were observed. Type I was characterized by a band shape. This was the most common type, occurring in 53% of all cases. Based on our study we are proposing a classification based on four morphological types of CFL. Types 2 and 4 are further divided into subtypes. Present classification may be useful to better understand the anatomical development of ankle joint.

RESUMO

The ability to navigate the complex and often deceptive branching patterns of the internal iliac artery can be decisive in planning and performing surgeries within the lesser pelvis. The following case report presents a peculiar quadruple division of the internal iliac artery, accompanied by a venous anastomotic structure. Apart from the posterior and anterior trunks, the superior vesicle and iliolumbar arteries arose independently from the internal iliac artery. The division was surrounded by a venous oval, compressing certain branches and potentially complicating surgical access. Due to the uncommon course of the internal iliac artery and the presence of the anastomosis, a possible nerve root compression has been identified. Both clinical significance and classification method of the case are discussed. Knowledge of this anatomical variation is valuable for both diagnosis and surgery, especially within the specialties of urology, gynaecology and general surgery.

An innovative analytical ultrasonic method for identification and investigation of Mechanically Separated Meat (MSM) samples is presented. To this end, the ultrasonic wave velocity (f=5MHz) in the investigated meat samples was measured. The measured ultrasonic velocity ranged from 1553.4 to 1589.9 m/s. The investigations were performed for: 1) minced hand deboned chicken fillets, 2) low pressure MSM from chicken carcasses, 3) low pressure MSM from chicken collarbones, 4) high pressure MSM from chicken carcasses and 5) high pressure MSM from chicken collarbones. Statistically significant (p<0.001) differences in the ultrasonic velocity were observed for each of investigated kinds of meat. High significant correlations were found between the ultrasonic velocity and the content of protein, fat, sodium and density of the investigated meat. The applicability of the developed ultrasonic method for identifying various kinds of meat and to determine the content of protein, fat, sodium and density was demonstrated.

BACKGROUND: The inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) is the third main branch of the abdominal aorta and arises at the level of L3, supplying the large intestine from the distal transverse colon to the upper part of the anal canal. The aim of this study was to characterise the course and morphology of the terminal branches of the IMA, and also creating a new IMA classification, which seems to be necessary for clinicians performing surgery in this area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The anatomical variations in the branching patterns of the IMA were examined in 40 cadavers fixed in a 10% formalin solution. Morphometric measurements were then obtained twice by two researchers. RESULTS: Due to the proposed classification system, type I characterised by a common trunk preceding bifurcation into sigmoidal branches and the superior rectal artery after giving left colic artery (LCA) occurred in 57.5% of cases, type II, trifurcation type, in 25%, type III with the superior rectal arteries originating firstly from the IMA in 5%, type IV with the ascending lumbar artery in 10% of cases and type V, a novelty, in 2.5%. The origin of IMA was observed at the level of L2/L3 in 22.5% of cases, at L3 in 25% of cases, at L3/L4 in 15% of cases, at L4 in 35% of cases and at the level of L5 in 2.5% of cases. More than one third (38.1%) of total cases with additional arteries and rapidly bifurcating branches occurred in types III, IV, and V. In women, only the IMA and LCA were significantly narrower than in men. Only the diameter of the IMA correlated with the diameter of the superior rectal artery. CONCLUSIONS: The IMA is characterised by high morphological variability. The introduction of a new, structured, anatomical classification seems necessary for all clinicians.

Knowing who eats what, understanding the various eating habits of different population groups, according to the geographical area, is critical to develop evidence-based policies for nutrition and food safety. The FAO/WHO Global Individual Food consumption data Tool (FAO/WHO GIFT) is a novel open-access online platform, hosted by FAO and supported by WHO, providing access to harmonised individual quantitative food consumption (IQFC) data, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). FAO/WHO GIFT is a growing repository, which will serve as the global FAO/WHO hub to disseminate IQFC microdata. Currently five datasets from LMIC are available for dissemination, and an additional fifty datasets will be made available by 2022. To facilitate the use of these data by policy makers, ready-to-use food-based indicators are provided for an overview of key data according to population segments and food groups. FAO/WHO GIFT also provides an inventory of existing IQFC data worldwide, which currently contains detailed information on 188 surveys conducted in seventy-two countries. In order for end-users to be able to aggregate the available data, all datasets are harmonised with the European Food Safety Authority's food classification and description system FoodEx2 (modified for global use). This harmonisation is aimed at enhancing the consistency and reliability of nutrient intake and dietary exposure assessments. FAO/WHO GIFT is developed in synergy with other global initiatives aimed at increasing the quality, availability and use of IQFC data in LMIC to enable evidence-based decision-making and policy development for better nutrition and food safety.

Two samples of triacylglycerols i.e., olive oil and triolein, and one sample of diacylglycerol were investigated. In the course of compression, the density of the samples was determined by measurements of the change of piston position in a pressure chamber and volume correction due to chamber expansion under pressure. The speed of sound was evaluated from the time of flight of an ultrasonic impulse between emitting and receiving transducers placed in the high pressure chamber. The adiabatic compressibility, the intermolecular free length, the molar volume, the van der Waals' constant b and the surface tension were evaluated from the density, the speed of sound and the average molecular mass. All tested liquids undergo a high-pressure phase transition. Discontinuities in the measured isotherms of the physicochemical parameters of the investigated oils indicate the presence of high-pressure phase transitions. Moreover the time dependent change of pressure at constant volume during the phase transition was measured. The fundamental difference in the molecular structure of these acylglycerols influences their behavior significantly under high pressure.

This paper presents a theoretical study of the propagation behavior of ultrasonic Love waves in nonhomogeneous functionally graded elastic materials, which is a vital problem in the mechanics of solids. The elastic properties (shear modulus) of a semi-infinite elastic half-space vary monotonically with the depth (distance from the surface of the material). The Direct Sturm-Liouville Problem that describes the propagation of Love waves in nonhomogeneous elastic functionally graded materials is formulated and solved by using two methods: i.e., (1) Finite Difference Method, and (2) Haskell-Thompson Transfer Matrix Method. The dispersion curves of phase and group velocity of surface Love waves in inhomogeneous elastic graded materials are evaluated. The integral formula for the group velocity of Love waves in nonhomogeneous elastic graded materials has been established. The effect of elastic non-homogeneities on the dispersion curves of Love waves is discussed. Two Love wave waveguide structures are analyzed: (1) a nonhomogeneous elastic surface layer deposited on a homogeneous elastic substrate, and (2) a semi-infinite nonhomogeneous elastic half-space. Obtained in this work, the phase and group velocity dispersion curves of Love waves propagating in the considered nonhomogeneous elastic waveguides have not previously been reported in the scientific literature. The results of this paper may give a deeper insight into the nature of Love waves propagation in elastic nonhomogeneous functionally graded materials, and can provide theoretical guidance for the design and optimization of Love wave based devices.

This paper presents measurements of sound velocity and attenuation in olive oil, with known chemical composition, as a function of pressure, within the range of pressure up to 0.7 GPa. Dependencies of sound velocity, relative ultrasonic wave attenuation, volume, and adiabatic compressibility on pressure show discontinuities. This proves the existence of the first order phase transition in olive oil (liquid to solid-like phase transition). Rapid and large changes in relative attenuation testify to the existence of a phase transition in olive oil. Moreover, the kinetics of phase transition was also investigated. Measurement of acoustic wave velocity and relative attenuation in olive oil during the phase transition and in the high-pressure phase is a novelty. The results obtained can be useful in the development of new methods in food (edible oils) control, processing, and preservation.

Viscosity measurements were carried out on triolein at pressures from atmospheric up to 650 MPa and in the temperature range from 10°C to 40°C using ultrasonic measuring setup. Bleustein-Gulyaev SH surface acoustic waves waveguides were used as viscosity sensors. Additionally, pressure changes occurring during phase transition have been measured over the same temperature range. Application of ultrasonic SH surface acoustic waves in the liquid viscosity measurements at high pressure has many advantages. It enables viscosity measurement during phase transitions and in the high-pressure range where the classical viscosity measurement methods cannot operate. Measurements of phase transition kinetics and viscosity of liquids at high pressures and various temperatures (isotherms) is a novelty. The knowledge of changes in viscosity in function of pressure and temperature can help to obtain a deeper insight into thermodynamic properties of liquids.

AIMS: To present the experiences of the Regional Comprehensive Cancer Center in Wroclaw with abdominosacral resection (ASR) carried out in low-rectal cancer patients. METHODS: Rectal cancer patients (n=294) were operated on by the same surgical team using the standardized TME technique between May 5, 1998 and February 23, 2001. Depending on the distance from the anal verge, the primary tumor was removed by means of standard abdominal resection (AR-mid- and upper-rectal cancers) or abdominosacral resection (ASR-low-rectal cancers). The patients who underwent the different operative procedures were comparable in terms of distributions of age, gender, tumor infiltration depth and regional lymph node involvement with no significant statistical difference between the groups. RESULTS: Ninety-seven cases were excluded from the analysis of survival based on exclusion criteria defined. Consequently, 197 cases were left for further analysis, including 154 patients operated on by AR and 43 who underwent ASR. AR and ASR patients did not differ significantly in terms of postoperative morbidity (11% and 14%, respectively), observed (57.1% vs. 60.4%) and relative 5-year survivals (74.3% vs. 73.2%) and the cumulative 5-year local recurrence rate (5.8% vs. 4.7%). CONCLUSION: The combined use of the modern TME technique and the "historical" abdominosacral excision of the rectum seems to give new, potentially attractive perspectives for successful surgical treatment of low-rectal cancers.
