The survival rate for pediatric cancer has increased over the past few decades, short- and long-term complications have been detected and studied, and oral complications have emerged as an important topic of research. Here, we aimed to highlight the importance of oral manifestations that may only become apparent years or even decades after cancer treatment. This systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. We searched articles using PubMed via the MEDLINE, Web of Science, and LILACS databases until October 2023. Overall, 35 observational studies were included, and the results estimated a pooled prevalence of the following dental anomalies: discoloration, 53%; crown-root malformations and agenesis, 36%; enamel hypoplasia, 32%; root development alterations, 29%; unerupted teeth, 24%; microdontia, 16%; hypodontia, 13%; and macrodontia, 7%. Most childhood cancer survivors have at least one dental sequela. Childhood cancer survivors presented a higher risk of having dental alterations than control counterparts. Additional analyses reveal possible sex-based differences that should be explored in future studies. These results collectively highlight the importance of oral healthcare and the prevention of disease in childhood cancer survivors.

Studies heretofore have shown inconsistent results on the link of ASD to malocclusion. Herein, we aimed to compare the prevalence of malocclusion among children and adolescents with ASD compared with non-ASD healthy counterparts through a systematic review. The electronic search focused on five databases, PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, LILACS, and OpenGrey until January 2022, and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines (PROSPERO No. CRD42022298023). Observational and intervention studies that compared occlusion characteristics of ASD individuals under 18 years old with healthy controls were included. Pairwise random effects meta-analyses of odds ratio (OR) were performed. Methodological quality was assessed by using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for cross-sectional studies. A total of thirteen studies were included for qualitative analysis, and seven for quantitative analysis. The results presented a great heterogeneity and moderate risk of bias; thus, it was not possible to state that there is a risk of malocclusion in individuals with ASD. Future studies should be carried out with strict criteria in the choice of samples, control group, and diagnosis of malocclusion in order to meet the necessary requirements for greater methodological quality.

Hypomineralized primary second molars (HPSM) are characterized by enamel opacities accompanied by hypersensitivity and atypical caries lesion, on one to four primary second molars. The correct treatment and follow-ups of those teeth have an important impact on a correct eruption of the first permanent molars and future occlusion. Hence, this report aims to describes a case of a severe HPSM in all second molars of a four-year-old girl and subsequent four-year follow-ups. The rehabilitation involved the placement of four stainless steel crowns on all four second primary molars under general anesthesia. Concerning the available literature and the case severity of HPSM, the treatment approach proposed for the case provided good functional outcome.

OBJECTIVE: In recent years, Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) has become a subject that concerns the Paediatric Dentistry Community. The aim of the present umbrella review was to analyse previously published systematic reviews (SRs) on MIH in children and adolescents. METHODS: Electronic database search was conducted (including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science, and LILACS) until July 2020. Studies were included, if they were SR on MIH in children and adolescents. The methodological quality of SRs was judged by use of the MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews 2. The primary outcomes included prevalence, aetiology, and clinical management of MIH. Data extraction and methodological quality assessment were performed. RESULTS: Eighteen systematic reviews were included for data extraction. Among these, two were focussing on prevalence, five addressed aetiology, one highlighted the mechanical and chemical characteristics of enamel in MIH, one underlined the association between MIH and dental caries, six addressed the treatment, and one focussed on hypomineralization of primary teeth as a predictor of MIH. The results showed a high worldwide prevalence of MIH and an unknown aetiology of MIH, but reporting that the aetiology is most likely multifactorial. Different treatment approaches used were desensitizing and remineralizing products, resin infiltration, fissure sealant, atraumatic restorative treatment, resin composite restoration, and stainless steel crown (SSC), but also extraction associated with orthodontic treatment of the permanent first molars (PFMs) was reported on. The AMSTAR criteria 2 was applied, where six studies were assessed as having critically low quality, two studies as having low quality, and nine studies as having moderate quality. CONCLUSIONS: MIH is highly prevalent worldwide and has most likely a multifactorial aetiology. Different treatment approaches according to the degree of severity of lesion(s) are reported on. The quality of evidence produced by the available SRs was not favourable. More well-designed clinical trials and high standard systematic reviews are necessary to elucidate better MIH characteristics and treatment outcomes.

Dental trauma is a very frequent occurrence in children and adolescents, which creates a great impact on the esthetics, functions, and phonetics. Traumatic dental injuries can range from simple enamel fractures to permanent tooth loss. This case report presents an eight-year-old patient with an uncomplicated crown fracture of tooth 21, and 30 days after trauma, it was diagnosed as necrotic pulp. The first treatment choice was a regenerative endodontic procedure (REP), however, the failure led to apexification with Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA). The chosen rehabilitation was a composite veneer. Concerning the available literature and fracture enamel dentin, the treatment approach proposed for the case provided good functional and esthetic outcomes.
