RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of forage inclusion and sources on performance, metabolism, and feeding behavior of dairy calves. Forty-eight Holstein calves were blocked and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments according to sex, and body weight (BW) at 28 d of life to determine the effects of feeding forage sources (ensiled and dry), with different quality on performance, metabolites, and behavior. Treatments consisted of a no-forage coarsely ground starter (CON); or total mixed ration containing 7.5% on DM basis of Tifton hay of either medium quality (MH) or low quality (LH); or 10% on DM basis of corn silage (CS). During the first 28 d of life, all calves received 3 L of whole milk twice daily, a commercial pelleted starter and no forage, and water ad libitum. After that, the solid diet was changed to the respective dietary treatments. Calves were gradually weaned from 52 to 56 d of age, and followed for 14 d post-weaning. Individual solid feed and milk intakes were recorded daily, and BW and metabolic indicators of intermediate metabolism were recorded weekly. Behavior was recorded, and the analysis was conducted on wk 7 (preweaning) and 10 (post-weaning). Solid feed intake increased at wk 7 and 8 when MH, LH, and CS were included in TMR; the same results were observed post-weaning. The diets did not affect the average daily gain and body weight, but the feed efficiency increased with the CON diet. The ß-hydroxybutyrate concentration was greater in calves receiving TMR containing forage than CON diet. Furthermore, calves supplemented with forage had a greater rumination time. In conclusion, all forage sources included in the TMR showed feed intake and behavior benefits, reinforcing the need for fiber from forage in pre- and post-weaning diets.

RESUMO

We show here that light polarization of a beam propagating through a heliconical cholesteric cell can be controlled by tuning the Bragg resonance of the structure. We demonstrate that this control is achieved by varying either the low-frequency electric field or the intensity of a pump beam impinging on the sample. The study confirms the recently reported phenomenon of optical tuning of the heliconical cholesterics and opens the door for the development of simple and efficient polarization modulators controlled electrically or optically.

RESUMO

By sending a light beam on a homeotropic nematic liquid-crystal cell subjected to a voltage with a photosensitive wall, a stable matter vortex can be induced at the center of the beam. When the applied voltage is decreased, the vortex disappears from the illuminated region; however, the system shows a stationary molecular texture. Based on a forced Ginzburg-Landau amplitude equation, we show that the vortex with a core of exponentially suppressed amplitude always remains in a shadow region below instability threshold and that the observed texture is induced by its phase distribution. This is a different type of vortex phase singularity solution. Numerical simulations and experimental observations show a quite fair agreement.

RESUMO

A lipid nanoemulsion (LDE) resembling low-density lipoprotein can target malignant tumours. In in vivo and clinical studies, association of chemotherapeutic agents to LDE decreased their toxicity and increased pharmacological action. Here, safety of LDE as carmustine carrier (50 mg m(-2) , intravenous) combined with vincristine and prednisone for the treatment of dogs with lymphoma was tested and compared with commercial carmustine with vincristine and prednisone. In five dogs from LDE-carmustine and six from commercial carmustine, complete remission was achieved (P > 0.05). Partial remission occurred in two dogs from each group. In both groups, the median progression-free intervals (119 and 199 days) and overall survival times (207 and 247 days) were equal. Neutropenia was observed in both groups, but no other major toxicities occurred. Therefore, no difference was observed between the treatments. LDE-carmustine was shown to be safe and effective in a drug combination protocol, which encourages larger studies to investigate the use of this novel formulation to treat canine lymphomas.

RESUMO

Homeotropic nematic liquid crystal cells with a photosensitive wall and negative dielectric anisotropy exhibit, under the influence of local illumination, stable vortexes with swirling arms that are trapped at the illuminated area. Close to the Fréedericksz transition an amplitude equation is derived, which allows us to understand the origin of the induced vortex and the competition between the illuminating profile and the elastic anisotropy generating the swirling of the arms.

RESUMO

By creating self-induced vortexlike defects in the nematic liquid crystal layer of a light valve, we demonstrate the realization of programable lattices of optical vortices with arbitrary distribution in space. On each lattice site, every matter vortex acts as a photonic spin-to-orbital momentum coupler and an array of circularly polarized input beams is converted into an output array of vortex beams with topological charges consistent with the matter lattice. The vortex arrangements are explained on the basis of light-induced matter defects of both signs and consistent topological rules.

RESUMO

By sending circularly polarized light beams onto a homeotropic nematic liquid crystal cell with a photosensitive wall, we are able to locally induce spontaneous matter vortices that remain, each, stable and trapped at the chosen location. We discuss the dual light-matter nature of the created vortices and demonstrate the ability of the system to create optical vortices with opposite topological charges that, consistent with angular momentum conservation, both derive from the same defect created in the liquid crystal texture. Theoretically, we identify a self-stabilizing mechanism for the matter vortex, which is provided by the concurrency of light-induced gradients and anisotropy of the elastic constants that characterize the deformation of the liquid crystal medium.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have established that mycobacterial infections ameliorate allergic inflammation. However, a non-infectious approach that controls allergic responses might represent a safer and more promising strategy. The 60-65 kDa heat shock protein (Hsp) family is endowed with anti-inflammatory properties, but it is still unclear whether and how single mycobacterial Hsp control allergic disorders. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, in this study we determined whether the administration of Mycobacterial leprae Hsp65 expressed by recombinant a DNA plasmid could attenuate a previously established allergic response. METHODS: We used an experimental model of airway allergic inflammation to test the effects of immunotherapy with DNA encoding Hsp65. Allergic mice, previously sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin, were treated with tree intramuscular doses of recombinant DNA encoding Hsp65. After treatment, mice received a second allergen challenge and the allergic response was measured. RESULTS: We found that immunotherapy attenuated eosinophilia, pulmonary inflammation, Th2 cytokine and mucus production. Moreover, we showed that the inhibition of allergic response is dependent on IL-10 production. Both Hsp65 and allergen-specific IL-10-producing cells contributed to this effect. Cells transferred from DNA-immunized mice to allergic mice migrated to allergic sites and down-modulated the Th2 response. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Our findings clearly show that immunotherapy with DNA encoding Hsp65 can attenuate an established Th2 allergic inflammation through an IL-10-dependent mechanism; moreover, the migration of allergen- and Hsp65-specific cells to the allergic sites exerts a fundamental role. This work represents a novel contribution to the understanding of immune regulation by Hsp65 in allergic diseases.

RESUMO

Two-year-olds were videotaped while engaged in free play and problem-solving play. The periods in which they were actively manipulating objects were analyzed as to level of engagement, distinguishing between periods of intense engagement, in which the children were concentrating on the nonverbal activity, and periods of casual engagement, in which they conducted the nonverbal activity in a more leisurely fashion. A micro-analysis of the children's spontaneous speech revealed that they spoke less at moments of intense engagement than at moments of casual engagement. These and other findings are taken as support for the hypothesis that when toddlers invest cognitive effort in nonverbal behavior, there is a reduction in mental resources available for speech.

RESUMO

The authors evaluated a new venous access port designed for peripheral venous insertion in the interventional radiology suite. Forty ports were placed in 40 patients in either the brachial, cephalic, or basilic vein under fluoroscopic guidance. These ports have been used for blood transfusion, blood sampling, parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy, and antibiotic therapy. The ports have been in use for 4,241 consecutive patients days. There have been no clinically apparent venous thrombotic complications and only one device-related infection. The cost and risk of complication are less than those for a surgically placed chest wall port, and the cosmetic result is excellent. This port has had excellent patient, nursing, and clinical acceptance.

RESUMO

A cost-benefit study for hepatitis B vaccination in Venezuelan hospital workers was performed through a decision tree analysis model, which includes the probabilities for the different outcomes of the hepatitis B virus infection (HBV). The current average cost of HBV infection to the Venezuelan Government was estimated at US$ 1,759 per patient. Implementation of selective vaccination or a mass vaccination campaign for the hospital workers would reduce the total cost of HBV infection to 51% or 28%, respectively, saving $17 to $26 million. This type of economic analysis may influence the distribution of the resources to be allocated for the control of HBV infection in Venezuela.

RESUMO

Cecal diverticulitis is a relatively rare disease, which closely mimics the picture of acute appendicitis. At times it is difficult to differentiate from carcinoma. Five cases of cecal diverticulitis are reported, with a discussion of some salient features of this condition. Although two cases were treated with a right hemicolectomy, a plea for conservatism in the treatment of this disease is made.

RESUMO

The effect of phenothiazine antipsychotic drugs on acid secretion was investigated in the isolated toad gastric mucosa. The acid secretory responses induced by maximal doses of histamine, carbachol and theophylline were all inhibited in a similar fashion by chlorpromazine. The ID50 was between 300 and 600 microM. Histamine-stimulated H+ secretion was also inhibited by trifluoperazine. Soluble cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase activity was not significantly affected by 300 microM chlorpromazine. Microsomal (H+ + K+)-ATPase activity was significantly reduced by chlorpromazine. The results indicate that phenothiazines can inhibit acid secretion in the toad gastric mucosa and that inhibition of the gastric (H+ + K+)-ATPase may be involved in the mechanism of action.
