RESUMO

Two studies were conducted to determine the effects of diet and feed additive on growth and carcass characteristics of lambs and cattle destined for all natural markets. In Exp. 1, 48 Dorset × Hampshire lambs (initial BW 29.4 ± 0.1 kg) were used in a randomized complete block experiment to determine the effects of Aspergillus oryzae extract, Amaferm (AMF) supplementation (1 g/d) in an 85% concentrate diet on growth and carcass characteristics. Lambs were allotted to 12 pens (4 lambs per pen), and blocked by sex and BW. Lambs were fed until the average BW of each pen reached a target BW (55.4 kg for wethers and 50.0 kg for ewes), at which time the entire pen of lambs was slaughtered. Amaferm resulted in a greater (P=0.07) G:F. In Exp. 2, 168 crossbred steers (initial BW 300 ± 0.7 kg) were used in a trial with a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to examine the effects of 0.5 g/d of Saccaromyces cervisiae boulardii CNCM 1079-Levucell SB (LEV), or 3 g/d of AMF with 2 corn sources, dry whole-shelled corn or high moisture corn, on growth and carcass characteristics. Neither LEV nor AMF improved (P>0.10) carcass characteristics compared with control or non-feed-supplemented steers. Addition of LEV to high-concentrate, corn-based diets did not improve (P>0.10) growth performance of feedlot steers. However, addition of AMF to a diet composed of dry whole-shelled corn resulted in an improvement (P<0.05) in G:F (0.208 vs. 0.194). Results indicate that at the amounts fed, AMF may improve G:F for lambs and steers fed dry corn-based finishing diets.

PURPOSE: The European Radiobiology Archives (ERA), together with corresponding Japanese and American databases, hold data from nearly all experimental animal radiation biology studies carried out between 1960 and 1998, involving more than 300,000 animals. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection, together with the University of Cambridge have undertaken to transfer the existing ERA archive to a web-based database to maximize its usefulness to the scientific community and bring data coding and structure of this legacy database into congruence with currently accepted semantic standards for anatomy and pathology. METHODS: The accuracy of the primary data input was assessed and improved. The original rodent pathology nomenclature was recoded to replace the local 'DIS-ROD' (Disease Rodent) formalism with Mouse Pathology (MPATH) and Mouse Anatomy (MA) ontology terms. A pathology panel sampled histopathological slide material and compared the original diagnoses with currently accepted diagnostic criteria. RESULTS: The overall non-systematic error rate varied among the studies between 0.26% and 4.41%, the mean error being 1.71%. The errors found have been corrected and the studies thus controlled have been annotated. The majority of the original pathology terms have been successfully translated into a combination of MPATH and MA ontology terms. CONCLUSIONS: ERA has the potential of becoming a world-wide radiobiological research tool for numerous applications, such as the re-analysis of existing data with new approaches in the light of new hypotheses and techniques, and using the database as an information resource for planning future animal studies. When the database is opened for new data it may be possible to offer long-term storage of data from recent and future animal studies.

RESUMO

This paper reports an internet-accessible database of mouse developmental anatomy (DMDA) that currently holds a hierarchy of the names and synonyms of the tissues in the first 22 Theiler stages of development (E1-E13.5), together with other appropriate information. The purposes of the database are to provide, first, a nomenclature for analyzing normal and mutant mouse anatomy, and second a language for inputting, storing and querying gene-expression and other spatially organized data. DMDA currently contains some 6900 named and staged tissues (e.g. 360 and 1161 tissues in Theiler stage (TS) 14 (E9) and TS22 (E13.5) embryos). DMDA will be extended to include further lineage and other data when it becomes available. The database can be interactively accessed over the internet using either a Java or a non-Java WWW browser at http://genex.hgu.mrc.ac.uk/.

RESUMO

A rare case occurred of chorioamnionitis complicating a smoldering periappendiceal abscess. Neonatal death and maternal morbidity occurred. Direct spread of infection from the abscess to the fetal membranes is hypothesized.
