iSupport-Brasil: Cross-cultural adaptation of the content included in the iSupport program for caregivers of people who have dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Examine the process of culturally adapting the content of the World Health Organization iSupport program for family caregivers of people living with dementia in Brazil. METHOD: This is a multicenter and methodological study to cross-culturally adapt the iSupport program. Initially, the content of the iSupport program was translated into Brazilian Portuguese by professional translator trained in Psychology, with mastery of the original language of the content (English). Focus groups were then held with caregivers/former caregivers of people who have dementia (n = 24) and health professionals specialized in aging (n = 24). The participants had access to part of the iSupport material for analysis purposes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted between June and September 2019. All the interviews were recorded and transcribed in full for subsequent analysis. All the ethical aspects were respected. RESULTS: The translator implemented some cross-cultural adaptations, such as substituting 69 proper names used in the original version by names of different Brazilian regions. In relation to the analysis of the material and comments from the focus groups, in general, all the participants had positive opinions about the material included in iSupport. Some changes were suggested in relation to the terminology and examples given in the modules to better fit the Brazilian culture and health systems, and links to relevant pages of the local Alzheimer's association were included. All the linguistic and cultural adaptations proposed were systematically documented and duly justified in structured forms provided by the World Health Organization, which approved all of them after verification of fidelity. CONCLUSION: The product of this research is the first version of the iSupport-Brasil program and the inclusion of its content in a digital platform. For the most part, the content offered in iSupport proved to be an important online tool to provide support and diverse information to the caregivers of people who have dementia.

Inventory of Father Involvement and Fathers' Perceptions of Family Life / Inventário de Envolvimento Paterno e Percepções dos Pais sobre a Vida Familiar / Inventario de Participación Paterna y Percepciones de los Padres sobre la Vida Familiar

Cross-cultural comparisons of father involvement and related issues are still scarce, as are consolidated measures for its assessment. We examined relationships among father involvement and family-related variables, in Brazil, and then compared these results with findings from other countries. In total, 200 fathers with children aged 5 to 10 completed the Brazilian version of the Inventory of Father Involvement (IFI-BR), and measures of stress, marital satisfaction, parent-child relationship, children's social skills and their behavior problems. Correlations among these variables were between .32 and .58, providing new evidence of validity for the IFI-BR. When comparing Brazilian results with correlations observed in other countries, the majority did not differ in magnitude, indicating that father involvement systematically influences the fathers' well-being, family relationships, and their children's socioemotional development, in different countries. In addition to the psychometric evidence for the IFI-BR, these results also indicate the potential for using the IFI in different cultures. (AU)

Comparações transculturais do envolvimento paterno e questões relacionadas ainda são escassas, como são medidas consolidadas para sua avaliação. Examinou-se relações entre o envolvimento paterno e variáveis relacionadas à família, no Brasil, e comparou-se esses resultados com os de outros países. No total, 200 pais com filhos de 5 a 10 anos completaram a versão brasileira do Inventory of Father Involvement (IFI-BR), medidas de estresse, satisfação conjugal, relacionamento pai-filho, habilidades sociais das crianças e seus problemas de comportamento. Correlações entre essas variáveis variaram de 0,32 a 0,58, fornecendo novas evidências de validade para o IFI-BR. Comparando os resultados brasileiros com correlações de outros países, a maioria não diferiu em magnitude, indicando que o envolvimento paterno influencia sistematicamente o bem-estar paterno, as relações familiares e o desenvolvimento socioemocional infantil, em diferentes países. Além das evidências psicométricas para o IFI-BR, esses resultados também indicam o potencial de uso do IFI em diferentes culturas. (AU)

Examinamos las relaciones entre la participación del padre y las variables relacionadas con la familia en Brasil y comparamos estos resultados con los de otros países. En total, 200 padres de niños de 5 a 10 años completaron la versión brasileña del Inventory of Father Involvement (IFI-BR), medidas de estrés, satisfacción conyugal, relación padre-hijo, habilidades sociales de los niños y problemas de comportamiento infantil. Las correlaciones entre estas variables oscilaron entre .32 y .58, proporcionando nueva evidencia de validez para el IFI-BR. Al comparar los resultados brasileños con las correlaciones de otros países, la mayoría no difería en magnitud, lo que indica que la participación paterna influye sistemáticamente en el bienestar paterno, las relaciones familiares y el desarrollo socioemocional infantil en diferentes países. Además de la evidencia psicométrica do IFI-BR, estos resultados también indican el potencial de usar el IFI en diferentes culturas. (AU)

Parental Burnout Around the Globe: a 42-Country Study.

High levels of stress in the parenting domain can lead to parental burnout, a condition that has severe consequences for both parents and children. It is not yet clear, however, whether parental burnout varies by culture, and if so, why it might do so. In this study, we examined the prevalence of parental burnout in 42 countries (17,409 parents; 71% mothers; Mage = 39.20) and showed that the prevalence of parental burnout varies dramatically across countries. Analyses of cultural values revealed that individualistic cultures, in particular, displayed a noticeably higher prevalence and mean level of parental burnout. Indeed, individualism plays a larger role in parental burnout than either economic inequalities across countries, or any other individual and family characteristic examined so far, including the number and age of children and the number of hours spent with them. These results suggest that cultural values in Western countries may put parents under heightened levels of stress. Graduação em Psicologia: o projeto da UFSCar / Undergraduate program in psychology: the UFSCAR project

Este artigo apresenta o projeto pedagógico do curso de Psicologia da UFSCar, que é direcionado por uma ênfase na formação para a pesquisa científica nesta área de conhecimento e para intervenções cientificamente embasadas no campo profissional. A versão atual do projeto reafirma os referenciais que nortearam a elaboração da proposta original e incorpora um breve histórico da implantação e funcionamento do curso no período de 1994-2005, assim como um conjunto de ajustes resultantes da análise das Diretrizes Curriculares estabelecidas em 2004. O texto também apresenta alguns indicadores do impacto do curso, que ratificam o projeto de formação do psicólogo como profissional, pesquisador, educador e professor de Psicologia.(AU)

This paper describes the project for the undergraduate program in Psychology at Federal University of São Carlos. The program places emphasis on the education of future scientists and professionals in the field of Psychology as well as on training in scientifically based interventions. The current version of the project reaffirms the principles underlying the original proposal and incorporates a brief historical overview of the course during the period between 1994 and 2005. Additionally, this version describes some adjustments made to the project in accordance with the new Federal Guidelines for Undergraduate Courses in Psychology established in 2004. The paper also describes some data on the impact of the UFSCar course which confirms the importance of training Psychology students to become not only competent professionals, but also competent researchers and educators.(AU)
