ABSTRACT Purpose: Statins are one of the most prescribed classes of drugs worldwide to treat hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia. By lowering the level of cholesterol, the use of statin could cause a reduction in testosterone levels. The objective was to evaluate whether the continued use of statins in patients with hypercholesterolemia causes a deficiency in testosterone and other sex hormones. Materials and Methods: Systematic Review with Meta-analysis, performed in Embase, Medline and Cochrane databases, until May 2023; PROSPERO CRD42021270424protocol. Selection performed by two independent authors with subsequent conference in stages. Methodology based on PRISMA statement. There were selected comparative studies, prospective cohorts (CP), randomized clinical trials (RCT) and cross-sectional studies (CSS) with comparison of testosterone levels before and after statin administration and between groups. Bias analysis were evaluated with Cochrane Tool, The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS), and using the Assess the Quality of Cross-sectional studies (AXIS) tool. Results: There were found on MedLine, Embase and Cochrane, after selected comparative studies, 10CP and 6RCT and 6CSS for the meta-analysis. In the Forrest plot with 6CSS, a correlation between patients with continuous use of statins and a reduction in total testosterone was evidenced with a statistically significant reduction of 55.02ng/dL (95%CI=[39.40,70.64],I²=91%,p<0.00001). In the analysis with 5RCT, a reduction in the mean total testosterone in patients who started continuous statin use was evidenced, with a statistical significance of 13.12ng/dL (95%CI=[1.16,25.08],I²=0%,p=0.03). Furthermore, the analysis of all prospective studies with 15 articles showed a statistically significant reduction in the mean total testosterone of 9.11 ng/dL (95%CI=[0.16,18.06],I²=37%,p=0.04). A reduction in total testosterone has been shown in most studies and in its accumulated analysis after statin use. However, this decrease was not enough to reach levels below normal. Conclusion: Statins use causes a decrease in total testosterone, not enough to cause a drop below the normal range and also determines increase in FSH levels. No differences were found in LH, Estradiol, SHBG and Free Testosterone analysis.

Background: There are only a few studies about the prevalence and correlates of premature ejaculation (PE) among men who have sex with men (MSM). Aim: (1) To estimate PE prevalence according to 3 assessment methods: self-reported time from penetration to ejaculation (ejaculation latency time [ELT]); Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT); and a direct question about the self-perception of ejaculation as being normal, too early (premature), or retarded. (2) To assess the agreement of the 3 assessment methods and identify factors associated with PE according to each method and their combination. Methods: We evaluated data from 226 MSM who participated in a cross-sectional study about sexual behavior among men living in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Brazil. They responded anonymously to an online survey between May 2019 and March 2020. We calculated the agreement of the 3 assessment methods and their association with other characteristics using logistic regression models. Outcomes: Outcomes included the prevalence of PE according to the assessment methods and the association measures (PE vs sociodemographic characteristics and sexual behavior). Results: The prevalence of PE among MSM was 21.2% (95% CI, 16.1%-27.1%) according to the PEDT, 17.3% (95% CI, 12.6%-22.8%) per self-report, and 6.2% (95% CI, 3.4%-10.2%) by estimated ELT ≤2 minutes. The agreement among the 3 assessments was fair (kappa, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.25-0.37; P < .001). Association with PE varied by assessment method: obesity and shorter time for ejaculation with anal sex vs masturbation were associated with PE according to the PEDT and ELT but not self-evaluation. Perception about ideal time to ejaculate ≤5 minutes increased the chance of PE based on ELT. Higher chances of self-reported PE were associated with trying to hold back ejaculation, and lower chances were associated with higher frequencies of masturbation. Clinical Implications: Combining tools to investigate PE allows the identification of characteristics associated with this condition and may result in improvement in the care of MSM. Strengths and Limitations: This anonymous online survey provided the privacy necessary for participants to respond freely about sensitive questions, with a low risk of social adequacy bias. However, as it was a secondary analysis of a larger study, it could not evaluate comorbidities (eg, erectile dysfunction, prostatitis, depression) and the use of condoms. Conclusion: The prevalence of PE among MSM is high and varies according to the instrument used for the assessment, and the agreement among the 3 assessments was only fair.

BACKGROUND: Premature ejaculation (PE) prevalence can vary according to different definitions, assessment methods and populational demographics and culture. AIMS: To investigate the differences between men classified as having "probable PE" (PEDT≥11), "possible PE" (PEDT = 9 or 10) or "no PE" (PEDT≤8) according to the Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT) criteria in regard to sociodemographic characteristics, and sexual and relational behavior. To assess the agreement of prevalence of PE according to 3 assessment methods: (i) the ejaculation latency time (ELT) according to the participant's memory; (ii) PEDT and (iii) a direct question about the self-perception of ejaculation as being normal, too early (premature) or retarded. METHODS: In this web-based cross-sectional study, men aged ≥ 18 years living in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Brazil, responded anonymously to an online survey. We used multinomial regression to estimate the association between PE according PEDT criteria and other features and the kappa coefficient to estimate agreement between the assessment methods. OUTCOMES: Association between PEDT-PE, sociodemographic characteristics and sexual and relational behaviors; agreement between PEDT, ELT and self-perception of PE. RESULTS: Obesity, trying to hold back ejaculation, short or nonexistent foreplay and age <30 years were associated with PEDT ≥11. Men who considered that latency was shorter for oral, anal and vaginal sex than for masturbation were more likely to have probable PE according to PEDT. Possible PE (PEDT scores 9/10) was associated with trying to hold back ejaculation and considering time for ejaculation shorter for vaginal sex. There was fair agreement between assessments (kappa 0.39; CI:0.28 -0.42; P < .001). CONCLUSION: PE prevalence varies according to instruments and cut-offs used, with fair agreement between them. This finding shows that the methods evaluate different aspects of the EP syndrome and they must be combined to allow the discrimination between the different types of PE and treatments. A growing body of research conducted in general life settings has found positive associations between happiness and prosocial behavior. Unfortunately, equivalent studies in the workplace are lacking. Organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs), the prosocial behaviors at work, have not been properly studied in relation to happiness, despite the positive consequences of both constructs for workers and companies. In response, our research aims to better understand this relationship from several angles. First, using a three-wave longitudinal design, we explored how OCBs and happiness are related to each other over time. Second, happiness was measured from a broad perspective, and three conceptualizations were adopted: the hedonic (e.g., positive affect and life satisfaction), the eudaimonic (e.g., relatedness and autonomy), and the flourishing (e.g., meaning and engagement) approaches. Thus, not only the prospective link between OCBs and happiness was tested, but it was also explored using the three models of happiness previously mentioned. Third, we conducted this longitudinal design in a less typical sample than previous research (i.e., Chile). We found results that supported our main hypotheses: (1) OCBs are prospective positive predictors of hedonic happiness, eudaimonic happiness, and flourishing; (2) the three models of happiness also prospectively predict OCBs. Our findings suggest that OCBs foster a broad range of happiness facets, which in turn fosters back the emergence of more OCBs, leading to a virtuous circle of prosociality and well-being in the workplace. This positive spiral benefits not only workers' quality of life, but also organizations' profitability and sustainability. Theoretical and applied implications for the field of Positive Organizational Psychology are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance in arthropods is an inherited trait that has become a major cause of insect pest control failure. Monitoring the level of susceptibility and characterization of the type of resistance of key pest species aims to determine the risk of resistance selection in time to take action to mitigate control failures. Seven populations of the boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis, collected from cotton fields in the Semiarid and Cerrado areas of Brazil, were screened for their resistance to malathion and beta-cyfluthrin, insecticides widely recommended for control of boll weevil and other pests. RESULTS: The levels of adult mortality were variable for beta-cyfluthrin (0-82%) but invariant (100%) for malathion. Bioassays of concentration-mortality were used to determine lethal concentrations (LCs) for each insecticide. The LC-values corroborate the lack of resistance to field rates of malathion but high levels of resistance to beta-cyfluthrin from 62.7- to 439.7-fold. Weevils resistant to beta-cyfluthrin were found through genome sequencing to possess a kdr mutation through the L1014F substitution in the voltage gated-sodium channel gene. CONCLUSIONS: This study found boll weevil resistance to beta-cyfluthrin to be not mediated by carboxylesterases, but with cross-resistance to DDT and carbaryl, and kdr mutation as the major mechanism of the resistance in our samples. Caution is recommended in further use of beta-cyfluthrin against boll weevil due to potential resistance. Monitoring studies using other boll weevil populations are recommended to determine the geographic pattern and extent of pyrethroid resistance. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

The waste generated in the production of wine and grape juice is characterized by a high concentration of organic matter, when properly treated, can serve as sustainable strategies for its use and destination, and among these, the production of biocompost. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the process of composting grape marc, sheep manure, and mango leaves, evaluating in the biocompost its physical-chemical, nutritional and microbiological characteristics for use in agriculture. The composting pile assembly followed the proportion of 30% of sheep manure as nitrogenous material and 70% of carbon-rich material (divided into 50% of grape marc and 20% of hose leaves), the initial C/N ratio was 33:1, and the process lasted 120 days according to legislation. When evaluating the results, the process occurred in an accelerated manner, where at 30 days the biocompost was already stabilized, and at the end of the process (120 days) it presented a C/N ratio of 5.85, as well as acceptable levels for the macronutrients K and P, and without risk of phytotoxicity, and could be used as organic fertilizer or as soil conditioner, reducing environmentally inadequate destination and generating savings with their reinsertion in the production chain.

BACKGROUND: Patients may remain dissatisfied after penile prosthesis implantation for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Studies showing the results of standardized protocols for preoperative psychological evaluation are lacking. PURPOSE: To estimate the rate of patients considered psychologically unfit for penile prosthesis implantation and to compare their characteristics with those considered fit after the implementation of a standardized psychological profile evaluation protocol for men with erectile dysfunction. METHODS: Cross-sectional evaluation of men referred for penile prosthesis implantation by their urologists, based on organic causes for the erectile dysfunction, including a semi-structured (sexual and relational anamnesis of the patient and their partner, information about expectations about the results of the penile prosthesis implantation and possible complications) and a structured instrument including validated tools for the evaluation of depression and/or anxiety symptoms. These were the Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20), the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey for quality of life, and the Five-Factor Model (FFM) for behavioral tendencies. After at least 3 interviews, the psychology team rated the patients as fit or unfit for surgery. Unfit patients were those with any of a set of warning signals indicating risk for dissatisfaction even after penile implantation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The prevalence of patients considered "unfit for surgery." RESULTS: The quality of life scores were good, but 27.6% of patients (95% confidence interval, CI: 16.7-40.9%) were unfit for surgery. Being unfit was associated with obesity (P = .027), anxiety and/or depression symptoms (P < .001) and high levels of neuroticism (P = .001). CONCLUSION: The preoperative evaluation protocol combining standardized and validated tools shows that more than one-quarter of patients with a medical indication for penile prosthesis implantation were not in good psychological conditions for the surgery. Job satisfaction is a core variable in the study and practice of organizational psychology because of its implications for desirable work outcomes. Knowledge of its antecedents is abundant and informative, but there are still psychological processes underlying job satisfaction that have not received complete attention. This is the case of employee emotion regulation. In this study, we argue that employees' behaviors directed to manage their affective states participate in their level of job satisfaction and hypothesize that employee affect-improving and -worsening emotion regulation behaviors increase and decrease, respectively, job satisfaction, through the experience of positive and negative affect. Using a diary study with a sample of professionals from diverse jobs and organizations, for the most part, the mediational hypotheses were supported by the results albeit a more complex relationship was found in the case of affect worsening emotion regulation. This study contributes to expanding the job satisfaction and emotion regulation literatures and informs practitioners in people management in organizations about another route to foster and sustain positive attitudes at work.

In the regime of deep strong light-matter coupling, the coupling strength exceeds the transition energies of the material1-3, fundamentally changing its properties4,5; for example, the ground state of the system contains virtual photons and the internal electromagnetic field gets redistributed by photon self-interaction1,6. So far, no electronic excitation of a material has shown such strong coupling to free-space photons. Here we show that three-dimensional crystals of plasmonic nanoparticles can realize deep strong coupling under ambient conditions, if the particles are ten times larger than the interparticle gaps. The experimental Rabi frequencies (1.9 to 3.3 electronvolts) of face-centred cubic crystals of gold nanoparticles with diameters between 25 and 60 nanometres exceed their plasmon energy by up to 180 per cent. We show that the continuum of photons and plasmons hybridizes into polaritons that violate the rotating-wave approximation. The coupling leads to a breakdown of the Purcell effect-the increase of radiative damping through light-matter coupling-and increases the radiative polariton lifetime. The results indicate that metallic and semiconducting nanoparticles can be used as building blocks for an entire class of materials with extreme light-matter interaction, which will find application in nonlinear optics, the search for cooperative effects and ground states, polariton chemistry and quantum technology4,5.

BACKGROUND: Erectile dysfunction (ED) after radical prostatectomy (RP) still represents a major issue. Considering the benefits recently described regarding the application of low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (LiESWT) in vasculogenic ED, questions arise about its role in the scenario of penile rehabilitation. AIM: To compare the early introduction of phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor (PDE5i) with a combination therapy enrolling both early PDE5i use and LiESWT in patients submitted to RP. METHODS: This study is a randomized clinical trial, open-label, with 2 parallel arms and an allocation ratio of 1:1. The study was registered in ReBEC (ensaiosclinicos.gov.br) Trial: RBR-85HGCG. Both arms started tadalafil at a dose of 5 mg/day right after the removal of the transurethral catheter, and the experimental group received 2,400 shocks/session-week distributed on 4 different penile regions. The full treatment consisted of 19,200 impulses across 8 weeks. OUTCOMES: The primary clincal end point was ≥4-point difference favoring the experimental group considering the mean International Index of Erectile Function short form (IIEF-5) at last follow-up. Any statistical difference in the IIEF-5 score between the arms was stated as the primary statistical end point. RESULTS: Between September 25, 2017, and December 3, 2018, 92 men were enrolled in the study. At last follow-up, we assessed 77 patients, 41 in the control group and 36 in the intervention group. A difference between groups was detected when accessing the final median IIEF-5 score (12.0 vs 10.0; P = .006). However, the primary clinical endpoint considering a difference ≥4-point between the arms has not been reached. When performing an exploratory analysis comparing the proportion of those individuals with an IIEF-5 score ≥17, no difference between groups was noted (17.1% vs 22.2%; P = .57). CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: So far, the benefits arising from LiESWT for penile rehabilitation after RP have been uncertain. STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS: This is the first trial assessing the role of LiESWT on erectile function after RP. Our study protocol included only one session per week for the experimental group, raising a query if a more intensive application could achieve better results once a statistically significant difference was found between groups. We discontinue the PDE5i use at the last session, which may have interfered in the penile vascular rehabilitation, maybe compromising the results too. CONCLUSION: After therapy with 19,200 impulses therapy across 8 weeks, we found an improvement of the IIEF-5 score, but it was not enough to be considered clinically significant. BACKGROUND: In the last 20 years, intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC) has been explored as a modality for the management of peritoneal metastases of gynecologic, gastrointestinal, and primary peritoneal tumors. Direct delivery of chemotherapeutic agents to the peritoneal cavity space has proved superior to systemic chemotherapy when evaluating characteristics such as drug concentration reached in the peritoneal space, penetration into peritoneal metastases, and chemotherapy-related toxicity. Traditionally, IPC is delivered by peritoneal lavage with a liquid solution. This form of delivery has limitations, including inhomogeneous intraperitoneal distribution and limited ability to penetrate tissues and metastatic nodules. An alternative mode of delivery is so-called pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC). Within this context, the present study sought to identify the pattern of spatial distribution of therapeutic solutions aerosolized into the peritoneal space using a single-port PIPAC device and ascertain whether the aerosolized method is superior to the traditional (liquid) mode of IPC delivery. METHODS: Analysis of the rate of intra-abdominal staining with aerosolized 2% silver nitrate in five porcine models. RESULTS: Assessment of differences in stain impregnation between the upper, middle, and lower abdomen did not reveal significant differences (p = 0.42). The median sum scores were 1 for the upper abdomen and 3 for the middle and lower abdomen. CONCLUSIONS: Aerosolization does not reach all regions of the abdomen homogeneously. However, adequate exposure of the upper abdomen, mid-abdomen, and lower abdomen to chemotherapeutic agents can be achieved with PIPAC.

Immature stages of the boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boh. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), develop protected inside cotton fruiting structures. Therefore, the adult beetles have become the main target of insecticide applications. The use of insect growth regulators (IGRs) is recommended against immatures, even though they may also affect the survival and reproductive traits of adult insects. The present study evaluated the impact of a juvenile hormone analog (pyriproxyfen), an ecdysteroid agonist (methoxyfenozide), and a chitin biosynthesis inhibitor (lufenuron) on adult cotton boll weevils, a key cotton pest. Mated and virgin beetles were treated by feeding them contaminated squares and cotton leaf discs that were previously immersed into pyriproxyfen, methoxyfenozide, and lufenuron solutions at field-rate concentrations. After exposure, treated couples were caged onto cotton plants, and survival, fecundity, and egg viability were evaluated. The IGRs neither affected the survival nor fecundity of adult boll weevils. On the other hand, egg viability was significantly reduced by lufenuron, regardless of whether the females were treated premating or postmating or whether their pairs were either treated or untreated. However, egg viability increased as the females aged since the initial exposure date to lufenuron, indicating a potential transovarial effect of this insecticide. Our results indicate that pyriproxyfen and methoxyfenozide do not affect adult boll weevils, whereas lufenuron temporarily reduces the egg viability of this key cotton pest.

The control of boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boh., relies primarily on synthetic insecticides. Although insecticides are registered to spray cotton fields against boll weevils, only a few offer satisfactory control and most have broad-spectrum action. Alternatively, spinosyns have been recommended against lepidopteran pest species in cotton and are considered comparatively of reduced risk to nontargets. The susceptibility of nine populations of boll weevil to spinosad and spinetoram was determined through dried residue on squares and cotton leaves. Furthermore, control efficacy of spinosad and spinetoram compared with the standard organophosphate malathion was determined for caged adults at two different positions within the plant canopy or treated cotton leaves after different spray intervals. Boll weevil susceptibility varied across the nine populations and tested spinosyns. The lethal concentrations (LC50s and LC90s) varied from 8.62 to 32.25 and 49.86 to 281.70 mg a.i./l for spinosad and from 2.17 to 15.36 and 8.58 to 69.36 mg a.i./l for spinetoram. The location of boll weevil within the plant canopy affected the insecticide efficacy with higher mortality when caged on upper parts rather than on lower parts of cotton plants (>85% vs <45% of control) across all three insecticides. In addition, dried residues of spinosyns resulted in adult mortality >80% until the end of the evaluation period (8 d), while the standard malathion caused only 10% at this last evaluation time. Thus, we can conclude that both spinosyns promoted prolonged adult mortality using recommended field rates compared with the standard malathion.

An ideal plasmonic system for hot-electron generation allows the optical excitation of plasmons, limits radiation losses, exhibits strong non-radiative electron damping, and is made from scalable and cost-effective materials. Here we demonstrate the optical excitation of dark interlayer plasmons in bilayers of colloidal gold nanoparticles. This excitation is created by an antiparallel orientation of the dipole moments in the nanoparticle layers; it is expected to exhibit strongly reduced radiative damping. Despite the vanishing dipole moment, an incoming electromagnetic wave that is propagating normal to the surface will excite the dark mode due to field retardation. We observe a strong peak in the absorption spectrum of a colloidal gold bilayer (nanoparticle diameter = 46 nm); this peak is absent for a nanoparticle monolayer. The full width at half maximum of the dark mode is 230 meV for an ideal nanoparticle crystal and 320 meV for the structure produced by self-assembly out of solution. The position and width of the dark plasmon are efficiently tailored by the interparticle distance within the layer, nanoparticle size and layer number. We present time-resolved pump and probe experiments of hot-electron generation by bright and dark bilayer nanoparticle modes.

Boll weevil is the major cotton pest in Brazil, and insecticides are widely recommended against it. We determined the susceptibility of boll weevil to insecticides either in single or in mixture ready-to-use formulations, which are registered to spray cotton fields under the hypothesis that mixtures are more toxic to the target pest. Concentration-mortality curves were determined to adult species, simultaneously through dried residues and ingestion. Ten insecticide formulations were studied with five in mixture (lambda-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam, lambda-cyhalothrin + chlorantraniliprole, thiamethoxam + chlorantraniliprole, and fenitrothion + esfenvalerate) and their five respective single formulations. Cotton leaf discs and cotyledons were dipped into insecticide dilutions prepared by diluting the commercial products into distilled water. Adult mortality was assessed 48 hours after caging adults on treated and untreated materials. The LC50s-concentrations varied from 0.004 to 0.114 g a.i./L, with a relative potency between single and mixture ones, varying from 1.37- to 29.59-fold. Furthermore, lambda-cyhalothrin and thiamethoxam in single formulation were the most toxic insecticides to boll weevil. Among insecticide mixtures, only lambda-cyhalothrin + chlorantraniliprole resulted in a synergic effect; whereas the remaining mixtures showed an antagonistic effect. Therefore, except for the mixture of lambda-cyhalothrin + chlorantraniliprole, the remaining mixtures did not enhance toxicity against the boll weevil and should be recommended only when aimed at different purposes.(AU)


Bicudo-do-algodoeiro é a principal praga do algodoeiro no Brasil, sendo o uso de inseticidas amplamente recomendado para o seu controle. A suscetibilidade do bicudo-do-algodoeiro foi determinada a inseticidas em formulação simples ou em misturas prontas para uso, as quais têm sido recomendadas para pulverizar campos de algodão sob a hipótese de serem mais tóxicas à praga alvo. Assim, curvas de concentração-mortalidade foram determinadas para adultos do bicudo contaminados, simultaneamente, via resíduo seco e ingestão dos inseticidas. Dez formulações foram estudadas, sendo cinco misturas (lambda-cialotrina + tiametoxam, lambda-cialotrina + clorantraniliprole, tiametoxam + clorantraniliprole e fenitrotiona + esfenvalerato) e suas respectivas cinco formulações simples. Folhas e cotilédones do algodoeiro foram mergulhados em diluições do inseticida preparadas com os produtos comerciais e água destilada. A mortalidade adulta foi avaliada 48 horas após o acondicionamento dos adultos em materiais tratados e não tratados. As concentrações de CL50s variaram de 0,004 a 0,114 g i.a./L, com potência relativa entre formulação simples e misturas, variando de 1,37 a 29,59 vezes. A lambda-cialotrina e o tiametoxam em formulações simples foram os inseticidas mais tóxicos para o bicudo. Entre as misturas, aquela preparada com lambda - cialotrina + clorantraniliprole resultou em um efeito sinérgico, enquanto as demais misturas mostraram um efeito antagonista. Portanto, exceto pela mistura de lambda-cialotrina + clorantraniliprole, as demais misturas não demonstraram maior toxicidade para o bicudo-do-algodoeiro e devem ser recomendadas somente quando objetivam finalidades diferentes.(AU)

The non-process-elements (NPE's) in the pulp and paper production, in particular chloride (Cl-) and potassium (K+), eventually accumulate in a sodium sulfate recovery cycle of a paper plant, especially on boiler fly ashes (flue gas cleaning). This accumulation often leads to fouling and corrosion. Thus, in order to reduce such problems, a leaching unit is typically integrated aiming to remove Cl- and K+ and recover sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) from boiler fly ashes. In this context, this research is focused on investigating the effects of temperature, ash concentration and pH on the separation efficiency (Cl- and K+ removal and Na2SO4 recovery) of recovery boiler fly ashes using design of experiments in a devised laboratory setup. As expected from the literature, the results obtained reveals that concentration has the most significant effect on the response variables followed by temperature; whereas pH, not mentioned in this application so far, also has a significant effect. The optimum operating condition, which yields 84 wt% of Na2SO4 recovery and 97 wt% of Cl- and K+ removal, is achieved at 60 °C, 50 wt% of ash and pH 9.0. For practical applications, this optimal condition reduces the accumulation of NPE's and mitigates the risks of fouling and corrosion.

Peritoneal carcinomatosis is the natural course of gastrointestinal, gynecologic, and primary peritoneal neoplasms. In recent years, our understanding of carcinomatosis has changed; it is no longer considered a disseminated condition, but rather a disease confined to the peritoneum. Thus, the combination of cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal chemotherapy has become the cornerstone of control of peritoneal metastases. Traditionally, intraperitoneal chemotherapy is delivered in the form of liquid solutions. However, a new mode of chemotherapy delivery to the abdominal cavity has arisen as an alternative to the conventional method. In Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC), the liquid solution is aerosolized into a spray, potentiating the distribution and penetration of the chemotherapeutic agent intraperitoneally. The present study aims to describe a novel form of this innovative surgical technique performed for the first time in Brazil, in a modification of the technique originally described for PIPAC: delivery through a single-port device.

Nos últimos anos, a carcinomatose passou a ser considerada uma doença confinada ao peritônio, e não mais uma doença disseminada. Desta forma, a associação de citorredução cirúrgica associada à quimioterapia intraperitoneal se tornou o ponto chave no controle das metástases peritoneais. Tradicionalmente, a quimioterapia intraperitoneal é aplicada utilizando soluções líquidas. Uma nova modalidade de infusão da quimioterapia na cavidade abdominal surge como uma alternativa ao método tradicional. A chamada PIPAC (Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy) transforma a solução terapêutica líquida em um spray aerossolizado, potencializando a distribuição e penetração da quimioterapia intraperitoneal. Este relato tem por objetivo descrever essa nova técnica cirúrgica inovadora, realizada pela primeira vez por um monoportal no Brasil, alterando a forma descrita originalmente para a aplicação da PIPAC.

Broad-spectrum insecticides may disrupt biological control and cause pest resurgence due to their negative impacts on natural enemies. The preservation of sustainable pest control in agroecosystems requires parallel assessments of insecticide toxicity to target pests and their key natural enemies. In the present study, the leaf dipping method was used to evaluate the relative toxicity of six insecticides to the striped mealybug, Ferrisia dasylirii (Cockerell) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) and its predator, Tenuisvalvae notata (Mulsant) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Three neurotoxic insecticides, lambda-cyhalothrin, methidathion and thiamethoxam, caused complete mortality of both pest and predator when applied at their highest field rates. In contrast, lufenuron, pymetrozine and pyriproxyfen caused moderate mortality of third-instar mealybug nymphs, and exhibited low or no toxicity to either larvae or adults of the lady beetle. At field rates, lufenuron and pymetrozine had negligible effects on prey consumption, development or reproduction of T. notata, but adults failed to emerge from pupae when fourth instar larvae were exposed to pyriproxyfen. In addition, pyriproxyfen caused temporary sterility; T. notata females laid non-viable eggs for three days after exposure, but recovered egg fertility thereafter. Our results indicate that the three neurotoxic insecticides can potentially control F. dasylirii, but are hazardous to its natural predator. In contrast, lufenuron and pymetrozine appear compatible with T. notata, although they appear less effective against the mealybug. Although the acute toxicity of pyriproxyfen to T. notata was low, some pupal mortality and reduced egg fertility suggest that this material could impede the predator's numerical response to mealybug populations.
