RESUMO

Splinting teeth to each other allows weakened teeth to be supported by neighbouring teeth, although the procedure can make oral hygiene procedures difficult. Several methods for splinting teeth, both extracoronal and intracoronal, as well as the materials commonly used for splinting, are described and illustrated. Two case reports are used to demonstrate the situations in which splinting might be appropriate.

RESUMO

Endodontic therapy may be needed after extensive fixed partial denture treatment. When endodontic access preparation is performed through a cast restoration, retention of the restoration is reduced and the underlying abutment structure may be weakened. Eventually, it may give way to cement breakdown and caries, resulting in a washout defect, which can jeopardize the restoration's longevity. This paper describes the clinical management of such a situation using stainless steel prefabricated posts and a bonding cement.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to evaluate immediate implants with implants placed in ossified extraction (control) sites. Histologic observation of immediate and control implants showed similar levels of bone integration at the light microscopic level using ground-section and decalcified thin-section histologic methods. Both histologic methods provided similar information in relation to determination of hard and soft tissue components measured at the interface. The percentage of bone integration was similar in different anatomic regions of the oral cavity. Bone patterns peripheral to the interface region differed, suggesting that special consideration be given to implants placed in the posterior regions of the maxilla and mandible.

RESUMO

Immediate implants have the advantages of few surgical exposures, short treatment time, and maintenance of alveolar bone height and width. The purpose of this study was to compare immediate implants with conventional implants (implants placed into ossified extraction sites) in adult monkeys. Forty-eight implants were placed and allowed to heal for a 6-month period. Following a 7-month loading period, the monkeys were sacrificed, and implant sections were evaluated histologically. Clinical and radiographic measurements showed few significant differences between immediate and control implants.

RESUMO

Immediate implants are implants placed into a prepared extraction socket following tooth removal. Short-term animal and human studies have shown these implants to be comparable to implants placed into healed bone. The advantages of the procedure include fewer surgical sessions, elimination of the waiting period for socket healing, shortened edentulous time period, reduced overall cost, as well as preservation of bone height and width. Although immediate implantation is more demanding both surgically and prosthetically compared to the conventional placement technique, the advantages make it very appealing to patients who are in need of both extractions and implant therapy.

RESUMO

The conventional osseointegration protocol calls for waiting up to 12 months for ossification of an extraction socket to heal before placing an endosseous implant. In this study the possibility of placing a pure titanium implant directly into an extraction socket immediately after extraction was investigated. A pure titanium Nobelpharma 10-mm implant was placed into a central incisor extraction socket of a stump-tailed monkey and allowed to heal for a period of 6 months, followed by functional loading of the implant. The implant was osseointegrated on a clinical and histological level. This pilot study suggests that pure titanium implants have the potential to integrate when placed immediately after extraction of the teeth and warrants further investigation.

RESUMO

The structure of lipopolysaccharide from a heptose-less mutant of Escherichia coli K-12 has been investigated. Lipopolysaccharide isolated from 32P-labeled cells was treated with mild alkali to yield two separable components: [OH-LPS]-I (approximately 70%) and [OH-LPS]-II (approximately 30%). Mild acidic treatment of [OH-LPS]-I gave mainly a product which was identified as (4-O-phosphoryl-N-beta-hydroxymyristyl-D-glucosaminyl)-beta(1 leads to 6)-N-beta-hydroxymyristyl-D-glucosamine 1-phosphate (Compound I). Further acidic hydrolysis of both [OH-LPS]-I and [OH-LPS]-II yielded as the main product (4-O-phosphoryl-N-beta-hydroxymyristyl-D-glucosaminyl)-beta(1 leads to 6)-N-beta-hydroxymyristyl-D-glucosamine (Compound II). The structures of the above products were deduced by a combination of compositional analyses, sensitivity to phosphomonoesterase, rates of hydrolysis of the phosphate groups and alkali-catalyzed beta elimination of the phosphate residues following appropriate oxidation of hydroxyl groups. These studies together with work reported in the accompanying papers have led to the identification of two species of lipopolysaccharide in the E. coli strain both of which contain a single glucosamine dissacharide unit but differ in having monosubstituted phosphate or pyrophosphate groups at the glycosidic position. Each species of lipopolysaccharide also appeared to be heterogeneous with respect to the number of esterified fatty acyl groups.
