RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Infertility increases women's risk of intimate partner violence (IPV). Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is commonly used to treat mental health problems among fertility treatment seeking patients. CBT has not been tested for its potential to reduce IPV in this population. We pilot test the use of CBT to prevent IPV and improve patients' mental health in a fertility clinic in Jordan. METHODS: Of 38 eligible fertility-treatment seeking couples, 16 consented and underwent up to 11 CBT sessions (average = 9) over 3 months. Interviews at baseline and 16 weeks post intervention (endline) assessed IPV, quality of life, social support, coping, and fear of spouse. Wilcoxon signed-rank and McNemar's tests were used to assess change in outcomes. RESULTS: At baseline, women's rates of IPV, depression, and anxiety were 75%, 87.5%, and 75% respectively, whereas men's rates of depression and anxiety were each 80%. Average baseline post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms for men and women were 3.3 and 2.7 respectively out of 5. IPV decreased 25% after treatment, and women reported less spousal fear. For both men and women, depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms decreased and social support and fertility quality of life improved. CONCLUSION: Psychosocial support should be standard of care for the treatment of infertility given the burden of mental health problems and IPV and the utility of CBT in this patient population. Co-design with couples is needed to identify strategies to bolster participation along with population-based interventions to combat the stigma of infertility and mental health service use and enhance women's status.

RESUMO

Background: Infertility affects one in six couples globally and is compounded by stigma and violence, particularly for women, in Jordan's culture. While existing research has illuminated societal pressures faced by infertile women, there is, yet no comprehensive understanding of the violence they encounter in their daily lives. Objective: This Interpretative Phenomenological study seeks to unravel the experiences of infertile women regarding societal violence in Jordan. By focusing on different types of community violence - physical, psychological, and emotional - The study aims to provide nuanced insights into the challenges these women confront. It also endeavors to identify contributing factors, including societal attitudes, cultural beliefs, and individual encounters, while informing policy and practice to mitigate this issue. Methods: Employing a qualitative approach, this study conducted semi-structured interviews with purposively sampled infertile women. Thematic analysis was utilized to uncover recurring patterns and themes, facilitating a comprehensive exploration of their experiences. Results: Five main themes were identified: How the surrounding people view me as an infertile woman; I am suffocated by their questions; they interfere in the smallest details; I got burned and turned to ashes, and I have no right to complain; The problem of childbearing and the treatment plan is a matter for me and my husband only; and who supports me and what do I want from those around me? Implications: This study's implications are significant for policy and practice. By foregrounding the prevalent violence faced by infertile women, it underscores the urgency of interventions. Raising awareness, providing education, and extending support can counteract societal stigma and violence. Creating a more compassionate societal fabric can ensure a safer, more inclusive environment for these women.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The incidence of stroke in younger adults is rising, particularly among women living with stroke who face multiple physical, psychological, and social challenges that negatively affect their quality of life. Consequently, women's roles in life would be negatively affected at home, work, and in society. This study aimed to explore the lived experience of women suffering from a stroke in Jordan. METHODOLOGY: This paper uses semi-structured interviews to present a descriptive phenomenological study of eight young women suffering from a stroke. The Colaizzi (1978) method was used to analyze interview transcripts. MAIN RESULTS: Three main emerging themes that describe the lived experiences of women with a stroke: 1) Experiencing stroke as a woman; 2) Stroke and the intimate relationship with the spouse; 3) Challenges of women's journey while receiving health care. CONCLUSION: After their stroke, Jordanian women have experienced profound, interrelated, and multifaceted difficulties in all aspects of their life and relationships inside and outside the family. Whilst healthcare providers recognize these stressful symptoms; however, there is a lack of attention and care to meet these needs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a prevalent neurological disease that can have a profound impact on women's physical, psychosocial, and spiritual well-being. In many cases, women living with stroke may have marginalized palliative care needs that are often not adequately addressed by healthcare providers. Unfortunately, the experience of women with stroke and their specific palliative care needs have been largely overlooked in research conducted in Jordan. AIM: The purpose of this study is to examine the specific palliative care needs of women who have experienced a stroke and are currently living in Jordan. By conducting this research, we aim to identify the various physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of women with stroke and gain a better understanding of how these needs can be addressed through palliative care interventions. METHODS: This research utilized a phenomenological descriptive study approach to explore the experiences of twelve women recruited from the outpatient clinic of rehabilitation centers. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The analysis was conducted using the method of Colaizzi (1978), which involves identifying significant statements, extracting meanings, and formulating an exhaustive description of the phenomenon under study. RESULTS: The study findings uncovered three primary themes that reflect the palliative care needs of women who are currently living with stroke in Jordan, including (1) Spiritual practices, beliefs, and needs; (2) Coping with distressing symptoms; and (3) Managing the delivery of unfavorable news. DISCUSSION: This study provides valuable insights into the experiences of Jordanian women living with stroke, highlighting the far-reaching consequences of this condition on various aspects of their lives. The findings reveal that stroke has a significant impact on women's physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being, with many facing unmet palliative care needs. By illuminating these challenges, our study underscores the importance of taking a holistic approach to stroke care that addresses the multifaceted needs of women living with stroke. Healthcare providers must consider these findings and integrate palliative care interventions into treatment plans to improve the quality of life of women living with stroke in Jordan. CONCLUSION: This study provides valuable insights into the palliative care needs of women who have experienced a stroke. Our findings highlight the importance of addressing women's physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs as part of a comprehensive approach to stroke care. We recommend integrating palliative care interventions into rehabilitation programs to improve the quality of life of women living with stroke in Jordan. By doing so, we can address the pain and complications that can arise from stroke, while also providing holistic support to address the emotional and spiritual impact of the illness. This approach has the potential to improve outcomes for women living with stroke and enhance their overall well-being.

RESUMO

Objective: To understand the perceptions of pregnant Jordanian women who received antenatal care via mobile clinic, and to contribute new insights into the experiences of these mothers and how they evaluated the services that were available. Methods: Ten Jordanian mothers who had received antenatal care at a mobile clinic discussed their experiences in semi-structured, audiotaped interviews in a study that adopted a qualitative research design. The analysis was done using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results: Three main themes were identified: Being informed about the medical campaign or missing the opportunity of being informed; The experience of receiving antenatal care was wonderful, although there was only one thing lacking; and they safeguard our life and take any opportunity to educate us. Conclusion: Data indicate that the mothers were largely satisfied with most facets of the antenatal care services they had received at the mobile clinics. However, while services are generally well received, there are clear opportunities for ameliorating the quality of services provided. For mothers living in remote, deprived areas, outreach is not just an 'optional extra' but rather an essential service.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Congenital heart diseases (CHDs) are the most common birth anomalies, and they embraced a wide range of defects ranging from mild defects to complex and life-threatening defects. Medical advancement improved children's survival, and more females are reaching childbearing age. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the lived experience of Jordanian pregnant women with CHD during pregnancy. METHOD: This study used a descriptive phenomenological design. Purposive sampling was used in recruiting 15 women from Jordan with CHD who had given birth to at least one live newborn. The study was conducted from October 2019 to April 2020. Data was collected from a public cardiac centre using face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Analysis was done using Colaizzi's method. FINDINGS: Three themes were identified: Being a woman with CHD, being pregnant with CHD, and being a CHD patient and healthcare-seeking behaviour. The findings revealed that pregnancy experiences of women with CHD are usually associated with many difficulties, negative emotions, and challenges. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The findings indicated the need for increased awareness and the importance of social support amongst both Jordanian women with CHD and healthcare providers. Also, the study provides new information to healthcare providers and policymakers to better understand the lived experiences of pregnant with CHD from their perspectives as it was associated with many difficulties, negative emotions, and challenges.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The current study aims to review, appraise, and synthesize the available studies and recommend the significant clinical implications for healthcare professionals to understand the existing findings of palliative care experience among patients with hematology malignancy. METHODS: After excluding the registered or ongoing systematic reviews in the PROSPERO database regarding the lived experience of palliative care among patients with HM, our systematic review and meta-analysis protocol was registered in PROSPERO [CRD42021270311]. A search for published articles in English between January 2000 and December 2020 was conducted among different electronic databases using PRISMA guidelines 2020. Meta-synthesis was accomplished using the JBI meta-aggregation method to synthesize the findings. The implemented approach involved all qualitative research and mixed-method studies that included a qualitative part. RESULTS: This review contained eight studies which led to 25 codes and seven categories. Finally, three synthesized themes were developed: (1) Approaching the end of life among patients with Hematology Malignancy, (2) submission and surrender of patients with Hematology Malignancy during their terminal stage, and (3) Entrance to the palliative care world. Therefore, realizing the importance of palliative care services to patients with Hematology Malignancy by providing evidence-based education and timely referral is crucial. CONCLUSION: There was a substantial increase in the HMs rate with late referral to palliative care services. The results of this review may draw attention to some issues reported by patients with Hematology Malignancy. Scaling up palliative care services for those patients is essential to minimize end-of-life suffering and the long-term impact of inadequate palliative care for patients with Hematology Malignancy.

RESUMO

Background: More than 650 000 Syrian refugees are hosted in Jordan. Refugees are at high risk of mental health problems. Aims: To explore the perspectives of Syrian refugees and their host communities and community leaders in Jordan on barriers and facilitators to the use of mental health services by Syrian refugees. Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was used to collect data through individual, semistructured interviews conducted between May and December 2019 in Jordan. A purposive sample was recruited from different sites. Results: Twenty-four individual interviews were conducted: 16 for the clients and 8 for the community leaders. Three themes emerged as barriers to accessing mental health services: (1) lack of awareness of mental illness and available services; (2) availability, accessibility and affordability of mental health services; and (3) stigma and social discrimination. Findings show that respondents had low mental health literacy levels. Conclusion: Policy-makers, care providers and decision-makers should take the findings of this study into consideration by facilitating the use of mental health services through awareness-raising about mental illness and the provision of services at primary health care centres. Making the service available near to the people who require it and incorporating mental health services into a broad-based community environment such as schools, primary health centres, or case management system are recommended as a common strategy that could help address refugee needs.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Nursing education needs to be improved in order to bridge the gap between education and clinical practice. However, clinical placements for nursing students are limited and student nurses often take merely an observer role, especially in critical situations. High-fidelity simulation (HFS) is a teaching method that can bridge the gap between education and clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of using HFS as a teaching method on clinical judgment among pediatric nursing students at the Arab American University utilizing a bacterial meningitis case scenario. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study with a convenience sample of one hundred and fifty baccalaureate nursing students enrolled in a pediatric health nursing course. Nursing students were randomly assigned to high-fidelity simulation experience or traditional methods. The clinical judgment was assessed using Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric Tool. RESULTS: Results revealed that the high-fidelity simulation experience has improved pediatric nursing students' clinical judgment. The mean clinical judgment differed significantly at post-test in the intervention group after the simulation (t (148) = 7.20, P < .001). CONCLUSION: The HFS can be an effective tool to provide a safe and effective learning environment for pediatric nursing students, consequently improving their clinical judgment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mortality is a fundamental indicator of the quality of the healthcare provided to women during pregnancy and childbirth, as well as the healthcare provided to neonates in the first week of life. At the national level, determining the direct and indirect causes of these deaths is vital, as it will assist in tracking the quality of antenatal, natal and postnatal care and help to detect the areas for avoidance. This study aimed to identify the main determinants of perinatal deaths in Jordan from the perspectives of health care providers (HCPs). METHODS: A descriptive qualitative approach using focus group discussion was used. Four focus groups were conducted in each of the four hospitals where the approached HCPs are employed. An average of 5 HCPs were interviewed in each focus group with a total of 80 HCPs participating in the 16 focus groups. Thematic analysis was carried out to analyze the data. RESULTS: The HCPs provided a detailed description of the determinants of perinatal and neonatal death from their points of view. Four main themes with multiple subthemes emerged, namely maternal factors (ignorance, concealment of medical condition, and husbands' negligence), sociocultural factors (socioeconomic status, tribal and consanguineous marriage, and harmful cultural practices), political factors (early marriage driven by displacement and war consequences on maternal health), and health system-related factors (services management including capabilities and logistics, overcrowding of emergency rooms, discharge against medical advice, and unskilled general practitioners in private maternity clinics). CONCLUSIONS: As perceived by HCPs, maternal factors, sociocultural factors, political factors, and health system-related factors are the main determinants of perinatal deaths in Jordan. Improvement in the quality of maternal and neonatal health care services, maternal health education, and maternity staff training are strongly recommended.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and nurse-nurse collaboration among registered nurses in Jordan. DESIGN: This study used a cross-sectional, quantitative survey design to query 342 nurses who worked in two hospitals in Jordan. METHODS: We used Arabic versions of valid, reliable instruments to measure emotional intelligence and nurse-nurse communication. FINDINGS: A total of 311 questionnaires were returned (91% response rate). Nurses' emotional intelligence was positively and significantly correlated with the nurse-nurse collaboration subscales. The results also indicated a statistically significant mean difference in communication subscale scores by gender and nursing unit. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated that nurse-nurse collaboration is linked to benefits for nurses in terms of improved job satisfaction, better nurse retention, improved quality of patient care, and enhanced healthcare efficiency and productivity. This suggests that improving nurse-nurse collaboration may have spillover effects of benefits, not only for nurses but for patients, organizations, and the overall healthcare system. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Building an environment that encourages collaboration among nurses can greatly impact the performance of nurses and its benefit to nurses. Encouraging employees to participate in activities and to collaborate in making this an integral part of their evaluation will contribute to improving the teamwork in patient care.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Many countries adopt eHealth applications to support patient-centered care. Through information exchange, these eHealth applications may overcome institutional data silos and support holistic and ubiquitous (regional or national) information logistics. Available eHealth indicators mostly describe usage and acceptance of eHealth in a country. The eHealth indicators focusing on the cross-institutional availability of patient-related information for health care professionals, patients, and care givers are rare. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to present eHealth indicators on cross-institutional availability of relevant patient data for health care professionals, as well as for patients and their caregivers across 14 countries (Argentina, Australia, Austria, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong as a special administrative region of China, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, South Korea, Sweden, Turkey, and the United States) to compare our indicators and the resulting data for the examined countries with other eHealth benchmarks and to extend and explore changes to a comparable survey in 2017. We defined "availability of patient data" as the ability to access data in and to add data to the patient record in the respective country. METHODS: The invited experts from each of the 14 countries provided the indicator data for their country to reflect the situation on August 1, 2019, as date of reference. Overall, 60 items were aggregated to six eHealth indicators. RESULTS: Availability of patient-related information varies strongly by country. Health care professionals can access patients' most relevant cross-institutional health record data fully in only four countries. Patients and their caregivers can access their health record data fully in only two countries. Patients are able to fully add relevant data only in one country. Finland showed the best outcome of all eHealth indicators, followed by South Korea, Japan, and Sweden. CONCLUSION: Advancement in eHealth depends on contextual factors such as health care organization, national health politics, privacy laws, and health care financing. Improvements in eHealth indicators are thus often slow. However, our survey shows that some countries were able to improve on at least some indicators between 2017 and 2019. We anticipate further improvements in the future.

RESUMO

Introduction: This study aims to examine the challenges faced by migrant Arab Muslim women in accessing maternity services and to suggest ways to improve the childbirth experience for them. Methodology: An interpretive ontological-phenomenological perspective guided by the philosophical tenets of Heidegger was used to examine the childbirth experiences of Arab Muslim women. Results: The sample size was 24 in-depth semistructured audiotaped interviews with eight women in the United Kingdom. The "Vulnerable Woman" was the main theme of our findings, which was discussed in five subthemes: language exclusion, discrimination and prejudice, bureaucracy and "stiff upper lip," conflicting ideology, and the conventional as strange. Conclusions: Maternity care should be culturally competent and emphasize the importance of recognizing differences as well as creating trusting relationships. At the same time, midwives should be aware of the dangers of labeling women because of their cultural and religious beliefs.

RESUMO

AIMS: This study aimed to examine the relationship between Emotional intelligence (EI) and intent to stay and to identify their correlates among nurses. BACKGROUND: EI plays a significant role in nurses' practice, relationships, behaviours and decisions. METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 280 registered nurses working in a public, a private and a university hospital in Jordan. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from the participants. RESULTS: EI was significantly correlated with nurses' intent to stay (r = .427, p < .01). Some of the nurses' socio-demographic and work-related characteristics were found to predict EI and intent to stay. CONCLUSION: The findings of the study came with a supportive knowledge about the positive impacts of EI on nurses' intent to stay. Improving both EI and intent to stay among nurses is important because it could have positive effects on organisations' decisions, policymaking process, quality of care, employee commitment and satisfaction. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: Nurse managers should pay attention to the EI of nurses during recruitment considering various determinants of EI identified in the current study. Additionally, nurse managers might want to strengthen factors associated with more stay intent among their staff.

RESUMO

Background Training within clinical areas is a vital part of nursing education. In order to effectively modify and facilitate such training, it is important to understand the perceptions of nursing educators and students about what constitutes effective practices. OBJECTIVE: This study explores perceptions of Jordanian nursing students and clinical instructors related to clinical training and the learning environment. DESIGN: Interpretative phenomenological qualitative approach was used in this study. METHOD: semi-structured focus group interviews in two Jordanian Universities Results: The study identified four themes focused on the experiences of these participants. Themes were attributes of clinical training placement, attributes of clinical instructors, attributes of clinical nursing curriculum and student's attributes. The first theme had two subthemes "Structure and nature of clinical placement" and "Nurses' collaboration". CONCLUSION: The study recommendations are: nursing schools should plan students' clinical experience taking into consideration the challenges associated with these attributes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Control over nursing practice (CONP) in the work setting is associated with several positive consequences such as increased job satisfaction, support of teamwork, decreased patient mortality, and improved quality of care. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the level of perceived CONP among Jordanian registered nurses (RNs) and determine its relationship with their job satisfaction and quality of patient care. METHOD: A descriptive, cross-sectional correlational design was used. A convenience sample of 230 RNs was recruited from 4 hospitals. RESULT: The RNs had a moderate level of perceived CONP. This control was positively correlated with their work satisfaction and perception of the quality of patient care that they delivered. CONCLUSION: Nurse managers should be encouraged to take into consideration nurses' perceived CONP to improve working conditions for nurses.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Emotional intelligence can help managers to effectively deal with conflicts in the workplace. However, the correlation between conflict management styles and emotional intelligence has not been fully conceptualized. AIM: To examine the impact of demographic variables and emotional intelligence on conflict management styles among nurse managers from Jordan. METHOD: A descriptive correlational design was used. A sample of 248 nurse managers completed the study. RESULTS: The integrating style was the most commonly used style among Jordanian nursing managers, while the least frequently used style was the dominating style. Conflict management styles significantly differed according to hospital type and years of experience. There were significant relationships between emotional intelligence and conflict management styles, but the direction of this relationship is not fully consistent with previous literature. CONCLUSION: Educating nursing managers about emotional intelligence may improve their abilities to manage conflicts in the workplace. However, cultural factors might have a role in determining the conflict management style used by managers. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: An analysis of the relationship between emotional intelligence and conflict management styles can assist management in initiating a tailor-training program to improve abilities to manage conflict.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To explore the experience of childbirth and becoming a new mother for Arab migrant women in the United Kingdom. STUDY DESIGN & METHODS: Hermeneutic phenomenology design was used to investigate the childbirth and early mothering experience of migrant Arab Muslim women from several countries to United Kingdom. Purposive sampling was chosen. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews. RESULTS: The emerging theme "displacement and reformation of the self" includes four subthemes from analyses of participants' interviews. These were the emerging dominance of the nuclear family over the extended family: self-contained/self-worth; moving from dependence: self-governing/self-reliance; freedom from cultural constraints: self-determination; and achieving peace of mind: self-satisfaction. CONCLUSION: Exploring the perception of migrant Muslim women's childbirth and new mother experiences in a foreign land may help caregivers better understand their healthcare needs.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study is to understand the attitudes of young Jordanian men towards breast cancer screening practices. A qualitative descriptive design informed by Clendenin and Connelly was used. Thirty-seven in-depth semi-structured individual audiotaped interviews were conducted. The analysis of the men's attitudes toward breast cancer captures the perception that breast cancer is an illness that occurs mainly later in life. This was associated with the perception of negative impact of cancer diagnosis on a young woman's social status and family role. Men believed that breast cancer preventive practices must be performed in a similar context of women's religious and cultural background. Younger generations are in need for health education related to breast cancer and its screening. It is important to provide support and guidance for young men to be more involved in providing early detection of breast cancer.
