RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of nurses' occupational safety perceptions on the level of job satisfaction. Method: The cross-sectional study was conducted at Acibadem Healthcare Group hospitals in Turkey from January 15 to February 15, 2018, and comprised of professional nurses. Data was collected using the Job Satisfaction Scale and the Occupational Health and Safety Culture Scale. Data was analysed using SPSS 21. RESULTS: Of the 275 nurses, 210(76.4%) were females and 65(23.6%) were males. The overall mean age was 26.50±5.11 years, mean working experience was 57.08±51.56 months and the mean length of current employment was 31.13±32.86 months. There was a positive correlation between nurses' job satisfaction and occupational safety perceptions (p<0.001); between nurses' working conditions and extrinsic satisfaction (p=0.001); and between the working conditions and the nurses' general satisfaction (p=0.008). CONCLUSIONS: High perceptions of occupational safety among the nurses led to greater job satisfaction within the organisation. Also, working conditions had a direct impact on both extrinsic and general job satisfaction.

RESUMO

Recent challenges brought by the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic have underscored the importance of coping with pressures on the workforce in healthcare around the world and have emphasised the continuing need to improve quality and operation efficiency of healthcare services even in such dire circumstances. Over the years, lean thinking has gained recognition in the healthcare industry, where lean has been associated with benefits, such as improved healthcare delivery quality, reduced costs and increased effectiveness of the healthcare delivery processes. Lean thinking has also been analysed in human resources with benefits, such as increased job satisfaction and perceived job autonomy. The current narrative review was planned to analyse and discuss the application and implementation of lean strategies with a particular focus on human resource management in healthcare. The review is complemented by a case study in a private healthcare group in Turkey, aiming to demonstrate in practice the effect of lean strategies on the satisfaction of patients and relatives, the job satisfaction of the employees, and the level of turnover rates within healthcare enterprises.

PURPOSE: This study reports the knowledge, experience, and attitudes of nurses toward forensic cases in Turkey; critically evaluates the appropriateness of current practices in the collection and preservation of evidence; and assesses nurses' level of awareness on the law enforcement perspective of forensic cases. The study, thereby, seeks to offer solutions to some practical difficulties faced by nurses in clinical practice in Turkey. METHODS: The study involved 178 nurses of 202 employed in three healthcare centers operated by the same private healthcare group located in Istanbul, Turkey. The primary method of data collection was a questionnaire composed of three sections. The first section recorded data concerning the participants' age, gender, number of years spent in the profession, number of years spent in current workplace, department in which they worked, and their job title. The second section sought to assess the participants' academic background and, specifically, the extent of their educational training on forensic cases at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Finally, the third section aimed to assess the participants' knowledge of and approach toward the management of forensic cases in real-life time setting by collecting data on their previous experience with forensic cases. RESULTS: Of 178 nurses, 139 (78.1%) were female and 39 (21.9%) were male. The mean age was 28.6 years, ranging from 18 to 51 years. The participants expressed that they experienced difficulties in medicolegal procedures (21.9%), evidence collection (14.0%), history taking and preparation of the patient (10.1%), forensic case reporting (10.1%), registry (9.0%), and physical examination (7.9%). The level of knowledge of the collection of forensic evidence and the protection of wet evidence was statistically higher among the participants who previously received training on the collection, preservation, and transfer of forensic evidence versus those who were not previously trained (p < 0.001 for both). CONCLUSION: Our study results highlight the need for medicolegal regulations and legislation allowing for the creation of specific positions for forensic nurses in Turkey. We also concluded that these nurses should be trained and equipped with necessary knowledge and skills in forensic nursing.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the perspective of private hospitals regarding experience innovation. METHODS: The qualification-type study was conducted in Istanbul, Turkey, in February 2015, and comprised 17 hospitals where patients and employees were interviewed using a semi-structured consultation guide. The employees were examined regarding the meaning of innovation, awareness of experience innovation and its measurement. The patients were asked about the reason for choosing a hospital, the actual reason for arrival at the hospital and the impressions while leaving the hospital. Based on the obtained answers, experience innovation was examined. RESULTS: Of the 87 subjects interviewed, 51(59%) were patients and 36(41%) were hospital employees. Overall, there were 61(70%) women and 26(30%) men in the age range of 21-75 years. It was observed that the tendencies of hospitals for innovation activities were high, but they confused it with novelty. CONCLUSIONS: Investments made without taking experience innovation into account do not convert into targeted results.
