RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Metastatic disease is frequently present at the time of diagnosis of canine thyroid carcinoma; however, utilisation of computed tomography (CT) alone for staging pre-treatment has been rarely reported in the veterinary literature. METHODS: The aims of this retrospective study were to stage affected dogs using CT findings of the cervical and thoracic regions, combined with histopathology/cytology results, in order to assess whether metastatic disease/WHO staging was of prognostic significance. RESULTS: Fifty-eight dogs were included in the study. Classification of cases into WHO stages I, II, III and IV were 10%, 50%, 9% and 31%, respectively. No statistically significant effect of WHO stage classification on overall survival/follow-up time was found (P = .576). Surgery resulted in a statistically significant increase in overall survival/follow-up time (P < .01). There was no statistically significant effect on overall survival/follow-up time in dogs that received medical therapy, either as sole therapy or as an adjunctive post-surgery (P = .198). CONCLUSION: In summary, this study documents the metastatic rate of canine thyroid carcinoma using CT for staging pre-treatment. Staging utilising CT revealed a higher distant metastatic rate in dogs with thyroid carcinoma when compared to historical studies using different imaging techniques. As long-term outcomes are possible for cases with advanced disease, surgical intervention could still be considered.

RESUMO

Microbial fouling is a costly issue, which impacts a wide range of industries, such as healthcare, food processing, and construction industries, and improved strategies to reduce the impact of fouling are urgently required. Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have recently been developed as a bioinspired approach to prevent antifouling. Here, we report the development of slippery, superhydrophilic surfaces by infusing roughened poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) substrates with phosphonium ionic liquids (PILs). These surfaces were capable of reducing viable bacterial adherence by Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by >6 log10 cfu mL-1 after 24 h under static conditions relative to control PVC. Furthermore, we report the potential of a series of asymmetric quaternary alkyl PILs with varying alkyl chain lengths (C4-C18) and counteranions to act as antimicrobial agents against both Gram +ve and Gram -ve bacteria and illustrate their potential as antimicrobial alternatives to traditional fluorinated lubricants commonly used in the synthesis of SLIPSs.

RESUMO

An 8 wk old male Yorkshire terrier was presented with a 2 wk history of recurrent hypoglycemia, lethargy, and seizures. Investigations revealed a marked increase in blood ammonia, low serum cobalamin, and increased levels of urinary methylmalonic acid (MMA) excretion. No liver vascular abnormality was detected. The patient was diagnosed with methylmalonic aciduria due to cobalamin malabsorption. The patient responded well to parenteral cobalamin administration, and the urinary MMA levels normalized rapidly following instigation of treatment. Due to the suspected hereditary nature of selective cobalamin deficiency, one sibling of this dog was screened and found to be normal. This is the first reported case of MMA secondary to hypocobalaminemia in Yorkshire terriers, and the second report of this disease in a dog in the United Kingdom. Given the fact that clinical signs of MMA are similar to those seen in dogs with portosystemic shunts and that Yorkshire terriers are predisposed to liver vascular abnormalities, this case report adds important clinical information to the current available literature.

RESUMO

CASE SUMMARY: A male neutered Ragdoll cat aged 11 years and 9 months presented with a 6 month history of weight loss and a 1 month history of lethargy and adipsia. A thorough clinical investigation confirmed a diagnosis of primary adipsia and hypernatraemia secondary to a non-secretory neuroendocrine pituitary macroadenoma. RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION: Primary adipsia is a very rare clinical entity. This report is the first to describe primary adipsia secondary to a non-secretory pituitary macroadenoma in the cat. The veterinary literature available in this field is very limited and this report adds a new differential diagnosis for cats presenting with primary hypodipsia.

RESUMO

Anaesthetists play a key role in the management of parturients with cardiac disease. Pregnant women with cardiac disease should be seen antenatally in a high-risk obstetric anaesthesia clinic, and a comprehensive management plan formulated. Most women with cardiac disease can have a vaginal delivery, and early epidural analgesia is frequently considered beneficial. No evidence exists to definitively support either regional or general anaesthesia for caesarean section, and much depends on the urgency of the procedure and the severity of disease. Women with the most severe forms of cardiac disease should be managed by a consultant anaesthetic team, with experience of both cardiac and obstetric anaesthesia.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of 6 clinical features with outcome of dogs with generalized megaesophagus. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. ANIMALS: 71 client-owned dogs with radiographic evidence of generalized esophageal dilation. PROCEDURES: Medical records were reviewed for data on signalment, age at onset of clinical signs, body weight, evidence of undernutrition, and the administration of drugs to treat or prevent esophagitis. Radiographs were reviewed for evidence of aspiration pneumonia (AP) and to calculate the relative esophageal diameter. Details of outcome were collected from the medical records and by contacting owners and referring veterinarians. The association of 6 factors with death before discharge and overall survival time was assessed. RESULTS: Overall median survival time was 90 days. Nineteen (26.7%) patients died before discharge from the hospital. Radiographic evidence of AP was both positively associated with death before discharge and negatively associated with overall survival time. An age at onset of clinical signs of >13 months was negatively associated with overall survival time. No evidence of an association of the degree of esophageal dilation or the use of drugs to prevent or treat esophagitis with death before discharge or overall survival time was found. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Radiographic evidence of AP and the age at onset of clinical signs were the only variables found to be significantly associated with survival time in this study, and this should be considered when advising on prognosis in dogs with megaesophagus.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to review Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in dogs, including the life cycle, signalment, clinical signs, diagnosis, and treatment. Apparent changes in the epidemiology of this unique parasite are considered, alongside information available regarding its recent geographic spread. ETIOLOGY: A. vasorum is a metastrongyloid parasite capable of causing an array of clinical problems in dogs, including cardiorespiratory, coagulopathic, and neurologic signs. Currently, the parasite has a worldwide distribution; however, it usually arises in small pockets of enzootic foci. Recent reports suggest a changing distribution of this parasite, which has renewed interest in its epidemiology and in the risk of expansion to new areas including mainland North America. DIAGNOSIS: A definitive diagnosis of angiostrongylosis is usually made using the modified Baermann technique either using feces or tracheobronchial secretions; however, this review also discusses novel methods such as serologic and molecular techniques. THERAPY: Once a diagnosis of angiostrongylosis is made, prompt treatment should follow with anthelmintic drugs (such as moxidectin/imidacloprid, milbemycin oxime, or fenbendazole) and supportive care dependent upon the patient's clinical signs. Currently, there is no proven prophylactic regime. PROGNOSIS: The prognosis appears to be very dependent upon the severity of clinical signs at presentation. A. vasorum can be fatal and death may be sudden. However, if a prompt diagnosis is made and appropriate treatment is administered complete clinical resolution is possible.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sodium:potassium (Na:K) ratios are often reported in feline biochemical panels, although the importance of this measurement has not been investigated. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to document the range of feline disease states associated with a decreased Na:K ratio, to determine the prevalence of this biochemical abnormality in a referral hospital population, and to identify any particular disease that was more likely to have a decreased Na:K ratio. METHODS: A group of 49 cats with decreased Na:K ratios was compared with a group of 50 cats with normal Na:K ratios that were randomly selected from the same hospital population. RESULTS: Twelve of the 49 cats (24.5%) had gastrointestinal disease, 10 (20.4%) had urinary disease, 8 (16.3%) had endocrine disease, 8 (16.3%) had cardiorespiratory disease, and 5 (10.0%) had diseases affecting other body systems. Six (12.2%) had artifactually decreased Na:K ratios. No cat was identified with hypoadrenocorticism. Statistical analysis revealed that, although none of these disease states was significantly over- or under-represented in the affected group, a significantly higher proportion of cats with decreased Na:K ratio had body cavity effusions (P = .025). Serum potassium concentrations were significantly higher in the affected group (P < .0001), but there was no significant difference in mean sodium concentration between the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS: Decreased Na:K ratios frequently occur in cats with diseases other than hypoadrenocorticism, including cats with effusions. These findings should be considered when evaluating cats with this biochemical abnormality.

RESUMO

Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of primary or secondary liver neoplasm is a minimally invasive new technique that is useful in high-risk surgical patients. We describe a case of pulmonary hemorrhage in a patient undergoing percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of liver metastases under general anesthesia. The patient subsequently had an uneventful recovery. We believe that radiofrequency energy caused injury to the diaphragm, pleura, and lung tissue.
