BACKGROUND & AIMS: Restricted linear growth and abnormal weight status are commonly observed among children in low-income countries, possibly due to inadequate protein intake. Considering the role of protein intake and amino acid (AA) synthesis in growth and development, it has been suggested that there may be an association between AA intake and physical growth. We aimed to investigate the association between different types of AA intake and physical growth among children. METHODS: A cross-sectional study including 780 six-year-old children referred to 10 health care centers for vaccination between October 2017 and March 2018 was conducted. Anthropometric data was collected using standard methods, and dietary intake was assessed using a validated food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in an interview by a trained technician. RESULTS: Children in the highest tertile (3rd) of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) intake had a higher weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) (P = 0.02) and body mass index-for-age z-score (BAZ) (P = 0.001) compared to those in the lowest tertile (1st). Interestingly, BAZ was significantly associated with the highest tertile of acidic AA intake (P = 0.04), while an inverse association was observed between the highest tertile of aromatic AA (phenylalanine and tyrosine) intake and BAZ (P = 0.01) . No significant associations were observed between the highest tertile of sulfuric, aliphatic, or neutral AA and BAZ, height-for-age z-score (HAZ) or WAZ. Further, underweight was associated with the 3rd tertile of aromatic, alcoholic, aliphatic or neutral AA and BCAA intake. Aliphatic and neutral AA intake was also increased the risk of overweight. Finally, stunted growth patterns were associated with the highest tertile of acidic, alcoholic. CONCLUSION: Findings presented in this study showed that higher BAZ and WAZ are associated with 3rd tertiles of BCAA intake, but lower BAZ were associated with 3rd tertiles of aromatic AA (phenylalanine and tyrosine) intake. Future research in other populations are needed to confirm these findings.

Vitamin D is a vital indicator of musculoskeletal health, as it plays an important role through the regulation of bone and mineral metabolism. This meta-analysis was performed to investigate the effects of vitamin D supplementation/fortification on bone turnover markers in women. All human randomised clinical trials reported changes in bone resorption markers (serum C-terminal telopeptide of type-I collagen (sCTX) and urinary type I collagen cross-linked N-telopeptide (uNTX)) or bone formation factors (osteocalcin (OC), bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP) and procollagen type-1 intact N-terminal propeptide (P1NP)) following vitamin D administration in women (aged ≥ 18 years) were considered. Mean differences (MD) and their respective 95 % CI were calculated based on fixed or random effects models according to the heterogeneity status. Subgroup analyses, meta-regression models, sensitivity analysis, risk of bias, publication bias and the quality of the included studies were also evaluated. We found that vitamin D supplementation had considerable effect on sCTX (MD: -0·038, n 22) and OC (MD: -0·610, n 24) with high heterogeneity and uNTX (MD: -8·188, n 6) without heterogeneity. Our results showed that age, sample size, dose, duration, baseline vitamin D level, study region and quality of studies might be sources of heterogeneity in this meta-analysis. Subgroup analysis also revealed significant reductions in P1NP level in dose less than 600 µg/d and larger study sample size (>100 participants). Moreover, no significant change was found in BALP level. Vitamin D supplementation/fortification significantly reduced bone resorption markers in women. However, results were inconsistent for bone formation markers.

Dietary recommendations to reduce the consumption of free sugars often group 100% fruit juice with other sugar-containing beverages. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of consuming 100% orange juice compared to an orange drink on next-meal food intake (FI), glycemic response, average appetite, emotions, and sensory characteristics in normal-weight adults. Thirty-six normal-weight adults (age: 26.8 ± 0.9 years) consumed, in random order and at least 5 days apart, three 240 mL test beverages as follows: (a) 100% orange juice, (b) orange drink, or (c) water. Subjective sweetness and pleasantness were determined immediately after test beverage consumption. Glycemic response, average appetite, and subjective emotions were measured every 15 min for 60 min. Food intake was determined at a pizza lunch 60 min later. Rest-of-day glycemic response and energy intake (EI) were determined using a continuous glucose monitor and food record, respectively. Lunch FI (p = 0.054) and total EI (p = 0.01) were both lower after 100% orange juice compared with the orange drink. Caloric compensation was 84% after 100% orange juice and -25% after the orange drink (p = 0.047). Average appetite was not significantly different between the test beverages (p > 0.05). Blood glucose iAUC adjusted for available carbohydrate was lower after 100% orange juice compared with the orange drink (p < 0.001). Rest-of-day blood glucose concentrations were lower after 100% orange juice compared with the orange drink (p = 0.03) and water control (p < 0.001). In conclusion, consumption of 100% orange juice as a preload resulted in higher caloric compensation, lower total daily EI, and lower blood glucose concentrations compared to the orange drink.

BACKGROUND: There is conflicting evidence on the effect of vitamin D on glycemic control. Therefore, in the current meta-analyses, we aimed to assess the effect of vitamin D supplementation on the glycemic control of type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search in electronic databases including; PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and NIH's Clinical Trials Registry, from the inception of each database up to January first, 2021. RESULTS: A total of 46 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) consisting of 2164 intervention subjects and 2149 placebo controls were included in this meta-analysis. Pooled analyses for HbA1c showed a significant change between the intervention and placebo group, the weighted mean difference (WMD)(95% confidence interval(CI)) was -0.20%(-0.29, -0.11) with P < 0.001. Analyses for assessing changes in FPG found a significant reduction in the intervention group after vitamin D supplementation, the WMD (95%CI) was -5.02 mg/dl (-6.75,-3.28) with P < 0.001. The result of pooled analyses for HOMA-IR revealed a significant change between the intervention and control group, the WMD (95%CI) was -0.42(-0.76, -0.07) with P = 0.019. The subgroup analyses showed the most efficacy in a higher dose and short intervention period and in subjects with deficient vitamin D status. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D supplementation might be beneficial for the reduction of FPG, HbA1c, and HOMA-IR in type 2 diabetes patients with deficient vitamin D status. This effect was especially prominent when vitamin D was given in large doses and for a short period of time albeit with substantial heterogeneity between studies and a probability of publication bias.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death globally, and epidemiological studies have suggested a link between diet and cardiometabolic risk. Currently, the prevalence of CVD is rapidly increasing with an aging population and continues to contribute to the growing economic and public health burden. However, there is limited evidence available regarding dietary patterns and cardiometabolic risk factors in older adults. We conducted a cross-sectional study to assess dietary patterns and cardiometabolic risk factors in males ≥60 years. Factor analysis identified a "healthy" diet and an "unhealthy" diet as the two primary dietary patterns. Multivariable logistic regression was used for estimating the associations of identified dietary patterns and cardiometabolic risk factors including anthropometric measures, blood pressure, glycemic biomarkers, lipid profile, and inflammatory biomarkers. A healthy dietary pattern was significantly associated with decreased odds of high serum fasting blood sugar (FBS) (OR: 0.32; 95% CI: 0.15-0.67; Ptrend=0.002), but increased odds of high serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (OR: 1.82; 95% CI: 1.02-3.24; Ptrend=0.04). In comparison, an unhealthy diet was associated with increased odds of obesity (OR: 2.33; 95% CI: 1.31-4.15; Ptrend=0.004) and high LDL-C (OR: 2.00; 95% CI: 1.10-2.61; Ptrend=0.02). Thus, in older adults, adherence to an unhealthy dietary pattern has a significant impact on clinically relevant risk factors for cardiometabolic risk.

Background: Food security is a fundamental human right that must be upheld to preserve excellent general welfare, and mental, physical, and social health. However, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report in 2020, the level of food insecurity in the world is increasing. Objective: Determining the prevalence of food insecurity in Iran will be beneficial for Iran and other low-middle-income countries. Methods: We searched both English and Persian (Iranian) databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, SID, Irandoc, Magiran, Civilica, and Iranian Medical Sciences Theses System from 01 January 1990 to 01 February 2022. Observational studies that reported the prevalence of household food insecurity among a healthy Iranian population and assessed food insecurity at the individual or household level using validated questionnaires were included. Results: One hundred six studies and/or theses with a total of 152, 300 participants met the review criteria. Our analyses demonstrated that the prevalence of food insecurity among the healthy Iranian population was 55.9% (95% CI: 52.6-59.2%) and the highest prevalence of food insecurity was in the western regions with 64.8% (95% CI: 57.7-72.0%). Subgroup analyses showed that food insecurity among women at 51.3% (95% CI: 45.1-57.6%) and rural inhabitants at 66.1% (95% CI: 58.8-73.4%) was significantly higher than men at 47.8% (95% CI: 41.8-53.8%) and urban residents at 47.1% (95% CI: 44.1-50.0%), respectively. Among the age groups, the highest prevalence of food insecurity was in adults at 56.5% (95% CI: 51.7-61.2%). Conclusion: The prevalence of food insecurity in a healthy Iranian population was higher than the global average. Women, rural residents, and residents of the western regions of Iran had a higher prevalence of food insecurity. Introduction: The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between consumption of dietary oils and anthropometric indices, mood, and appetite among women staff of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used, and 245 women staff of Tehran University of Medical Sciences participated. A 168-item food frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate dietary and nutrient intake. The association between liquid vegetable oils, hydrogenated vegetable oil, and animal fat intake and anthropometric indices, appetite, and mood was evaluated. The Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire was used to assess mood. A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to evaluate appetite status. The tape measure was used to measure the waist circumference and height. SPSS was used to compute body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Results: In the present study, sunflower and frying oil were the most consumed liquid oils (n = 135/245 participants). Participants with a moderate intake of MUFA had greater odds ratio (OR: 3.47; 95% CI: 1.20-10.7; P trend = 0.025) of a high appetite compared to those with a low intake of MUFA. However, the study found no evidence of an association between consumption of edible oils (vegetable oils, animal fat oils, and other fatty acid sources) and mood, anthropometric indices, or appetite. Conclusions: In the current research, we noticed a significant connection between moderate intake of MUFA and a large appetite and no association between consumption of edible oils and other outcomes. In conclusion, a balanced diet low in fast meals, processed foods, cakes, cookies, and sweets is suggested to limit the consumption of artificial trans-fatty acids.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Childhood obesity is concerning as it is highly prevalent worldwide and has long-term health implications in adulthood. Recently, the MIND diet was created to encourage a brain-healthy diet and focuses on plant-based eating. The relationship between the MIND diet and childhood obesity is not well understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between adherence to the MIND diet and overweight and obesity in children. METHODS: Data from a population-based cross-sectional study (n = 788 children aged 6 years) in Tehran, Iran was used. A 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate dietary intake. The MIND diet scores were calculated and anthropometric measurements were completed for all children. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for overweight and obesity across tertiles of MIND diet scores were estimated using logistic regression analyses, adjusted for energy intake, socioeconomic status, and physical activity. RESULTS: The mean weight, height, BMI, and total energy intake of participants were 20.85 + 2.35 kg, 113.75 + 2.00 cm, 16.12 + 1.84 kg/m2, and 1014.74 + 259.16 (kcal/d), respectively. There was an inverse association between the MIND diet score and overweight (OR = 0.0.55, 95% CI: 0.38-0.81; P-trend = 0.002) and overweight/obesity (OR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.41-0.86; P-trend = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: Higher adherence to the MIND diet may lower the risk of overweight and overweight/obesity in children. Future studies using prospective study designs are needed to confirm these findings.

Childhood is a critical period for susceptibility to malnutrition. The consumption of ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) has been increasing among children. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between UPF intake and overweight/obesity and malnutrition in children. 788 children aged 6 years were included in a population-based cross-sectional study in Tehran. A 168-item semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate dietary intake. UPFs were detected using the NOVA classification system. Logistic regression analyses were used, and results were reported as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of obesity and malnutrition across the tertiles of UPFs adjusted for energy intake, socioeconomic status, and physical activity. The mean weight, height, BMI, and total energy intake of participants were 20.85 ± 2.35 kg, 113.75 ± 2.00 cm, 16.12 + 1.84 kg/m2, and 1014.74 ± 259.16 (kcal/d), respectively. There were no significant associations between UPF intake and obesity (OR = 0.97; 95% CI 0.31 to 3.01; P-trend = 0.98), wasting (OR = 0.94; 95% CI 0.30 to 2.87; P-trend = 0.87), overweight/obesity (OR = 0.86; 95% CI 0.59 to 1.25; P-trend = 0.45), underweight/wasting (OR = 0.69; 95% CI 0.40 to 1.17; P-trend = 0.17), marginal-stunting (OR = 1.16; 95% CI 0.71 to 1.89; P-trend = 0.53), or marginal-stunting/overweight/obesity (OR = 1.25; 95% CI 0.62 to 2.54; P-trend = 0.47). There was no evidence of an association between intake of UPFs and risk of overweight, obesity, and malnutrition in children.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity has been shown to be associated with poor dietary quality and eating behaviors, which can have both short- and long-term adverse health outcomes in children. The objective was to investigate the food security status, dietary intakes, and eating behaviors in a convenience sample of youth participating in the Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment LaunchPad programming in downtown Toronto, Ontario. METHODS: Youth aged 9-18 years were recruited to participate in the study. Food security status, dietary intakes, and eating behaviors were collected using parent- or self-reported questionnaires online. RESULTS: Sixty-six youth (mean ± SD: 11.7 ± 1.9 years) participated in the study. The prevalence of household food insecurity was higher than the national average with at least one child under 18 years of age (27.7% vs. 16.2%). Dietary intake patterns were similar to the national trends with low intakes of fiber, inadequate intakes of calcium and vitamin D; and excess intakes of sodium, added sugar, and saturated fat. Despite a low prevalence of poor eating habits, distracted eating was the most frequently reported poor eating habit. CONCLUSIONS: Although youth were at high risk for experiencing household food insecurity, inadequate dietary intake patterns were similar to the national trends. Our findings can be used to develop future programming to facilitate healthy dietary behaviors appropriate for the target community.

Background: Some dietary patterns may improve diabetes complications through scavenging oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. This study evaluated the effect of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet on sleep status, mental health, and hormonal changes among Iranian women with type 2 diabetes. Methods: This randomized controlled trial (RCT) included 66 diabetic women. Participants were randomly divided into the two different diet groups (the DASH diet and control diet; 33 patients in each group) for 3 months. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 items were used to assess sleep and mental disorders, respectively. Fasting blood sugar, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), advanced glycation end products (AGEs), as well as several sex hormones were evaluated at the beginning and the end of the trial. Results: Anthropometric indices, HbA1c (control: 8.77 ± 0.82 vs. 8.04 ± 1.03; the DASH diet 8.70 ± 1.05 vs.7.41 ± 1.03), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) (control: 72.16 ± 26.02 vs. 68.12 ± 27.63; the DASH diet: 72.99 ± 25.19 vs. 67.43 ± 27.63) significantly decreased over 12 weeks in both the groups (P < .0001). Testosterone, 2-h postprandial glucose (2hPPG), and AGEs significantly decreased over 12 weeks in the DASH diet group. Sleep, depression, and anxiety scores significantly decreased over 12 weeks in the DASH diet group. Night sleep duration significantly increased over 12 weeks in the DASH diet group (P < 0.0001). Conclusion: A 12-week DASH diet significantly decreases testosterone, 2hPPG, AGEs level, as well as sleep, depression, and anxiety scores in women with type 2 diabetes. However, more RCTs are needed to confirm these findings.

Paper-based motivation-to-eat visual analogue scales (VASs) developed for adults are widely used in the pediatric age range. The VAS is comprised of four domains: hunger, fullness, desire to eat, and prospective food consumption. The purpose of the present study was to determine agreement between the traditional paper-based VAS and a novel digital VAS (with and without images), as well as the novel digital VAS's predictive validity for subsequent food intake (FI) in 9-14-year-old children and adolescents. Following an overnight fast and 3 h after consuming a standardized breakfast at home, children and adolescents (n = 17) completed three different VAS instruments (VASpaper, VASimages, VASno-images) in a randomized order at five time-points: 0 min (baseline), 5 min (immediately after consuming a 147 kcal yogurt treatment), 20 min, 35 min (immediately before an ad libitum lunch), and 65 min (immediately post ad libitum lunch). All three instruments were comparable, as shown by low bias and limits of agreement on Bland-Altman plots, moderate to excellent intraclass correlation coefficients for all domains at all time-points (ICC = 0.72-0.98), and no differences between the incremental area under the curve for any of the domains. All three instruments also showed good predictive validity for subsequent FI, with the strongest relationship observed immediately before the ad libitum lunch (p = 0.56-0.63). There was no significant association between subjective thirst and water intake, except with VASno-images at baseline (r = 0.49, p = 0.046). In conclusion, the present study suggests that a novel image-based digital VAS evaluating motivation-to-eat is interchangeable with the traditional paper-based VAS, and provides good predictive validity for next-meal FI in 9-14-year-old normal weight children and adolescents.

Lifestyle factors are modifiable habits that shape the way in which individuals live their lives and can influence mental health. This study examined the associations between lifestyle factors and mental well-being among baccalaureate nursing students at one Canadian university. A cross-sectional, observational online survey was distributed at one urban university campus in Ontario, Canada. Baccalaureate nursing students (n = 147) completed the survey containing questions for demographic variables, sleep quality, dietary pattern, alcohol use, physical activity, sitting time, cigarette smoking, depression, anxiety and stress. Linear regression analysis revealed that more sitting time, poor sleep quality, and low dairy consumption were associated with higher scores in depression, anxiety, and psychological stress. In conclusion, poor lifestyle behaviors such as sedentary lifestyle, poor sleep, and low dairy consumption may reduce the mental well-being of baccalaureate nursing students. Future efforts should aim to establish a causal relationship between lifestyle and mental well-being, which would contribute to the development of lifestyle interventions to promote mental health.

Previous studies reported inconsistent findings regarding the consumption of a vegetarian diet with mental health outcomes, specifically depression, anxiety and stress. A systematic review was conducted to summarize the current state of literature regarding our understanding of the association between a vegetarian diet and depression, anxiety and stress. A literature search was completed using Scopus, PubMed, and the Web of Science for relevant articles published prior to July 2020. Prospective cohort and cross-sectional studies conducted on adults reporting risk estimates for the consumption of a vegetarian diet, depression, anxiety, and stress were selected. A fixed effects or a random effects model was performed to pool effect sizes. Results from 13 publications (four cohort studies and nine cross-sectional studies) assessing the relationship between the consumption of a vegetarian diet and depression, anxiety and stress were included. The pooled effect size from 10 studies indicated no association between the consumption of a vegetarian diet and depression (pooled effect size: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.84-1.25, p = 0.817). Further, the pooled effect size from four studies suggests that a vegetarian diet is not associated with anxiety (pooled effect size: 1.09, 95% CI: 0.71-1.68, p = 0.678). Due to insufficient data for stress, we were not able to pool the results. Together, no significant associations were observed between the consumption of a vegetarian diet and depression or anxiety. Future cohort studies are needed to further investigate the effects of a vegetarian diet on these mental health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cardiovascular disease is dramatically increasing particularly in developing countries. Among the different factors, diet has an important role in the pathogenesis of these diseases. This study aimed to assess the relationship between dietary quality index-international (DQI-I) and cardiovascular risk factors in adult Iranian women. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 371 participants, aged 20-50 yr, and recruited from 10 health centers from health centers affiliated with Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Tehran, Iran in 2018. Usual dietary intake was evaluated by a validated and reliable 168-items food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). To assess overall quality of diet, the Dietary Quality Index-International (DQI) was used. Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, and fasting blood of samples were taken to assess biochemical parameters related to cardiovascular disease. RESULTS: The results of linear regression showed that DQI-I score was inversely and directly associated with serum level of total cholesterol (TC) (0.27, confidence interval (CI): 0.13-0.58; P<0.001) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (2.53, CI: 1.42-4.52; P=0.001), respectively. However, there was no significant association between DQI-I and other cardiovascular risk factors. CONCLUSION: A greater DQI-I score was associated with preferable lipid profile including TC and HDL-C. Future large-scale, prospective cohort or clinical studies are required to confirm these findings.

The right messaging plays an important role in the fight against the spread of COVID-19. The present study aims at uncovering the way people think about governmental measures against COVID-19. Two hundred and sixteen Hungarians participated in this on-line study. A conjoint-based experimental design was used to reveal the power of messages as drivers of voluntary social distancing based on the perceived risk of COVID-19, the ways to practice social distancing and to assure it, and preferences regarding the communicator of the social distancing policy. Results revealed three major mindsets: Pandemic observers, Order-followers, and Health-conscious. Members of each mindset respond differently to messages. To enhance compliance with social distancing and contain the virus, we suggest using the prediction tool we developed to identify the belonging of people or groups in the population to mindsets in the sample and address people using effective mindset-tailored messaging.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Weight status and growth during childhood are indicative of healthy development throughout the lifespan. Thus, understanding the influence of overall quality of diet and dietary patterns on anthropometric measures during childhood is critical to inform dietary recommendations. The current study used an updated version of the healthy eating index (HEI) to evaluate the association between overall diet quality and measures of childhood development in six-year-old children. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted across 788 six-year-old children referred to healthcare centers in Tehran, Iran. Anthropometric indices and dietary intake were evaluated using standard protocols and food frequency questionnaires, respectively. The HEI-2015 was used to evaluate participant diet quality. The total HEI-2015 score ranged from zero to 100 using the sum of thirteen food score components. RESULTS: Children in the highest tertile of HEI score had higher nutrient intakes and HEI-related food groups (p < 0.05). Children within the highest tertile of HEI score compared to those within the lowest tertile were more likely to be overweight (OR: 1.45; 95% CI = 1.01; 2.08). CONCLUSIONS: Findings presented in this study showed that HEI was not associated with a greater likelihood of obesity, underweight, severe underweight, and stunting. However, children in the highest tertile of HEI score were more likely to be overweight.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia is often associated with obesity and contributes to the increased risk of atherosclerosis, heart disease, and stroke. This study was designed to evaluate the independent or combined effect of calcium and vitamin D (Ca + Vit D) supplementation on blood lipid profile in overweight or obese premenopausal women. METHODS: This study is a triple-blind, randomized, parallel, placebo-controlled trial. About 100 overweight or obese (body mass index (BMI) of 25-40 kg/m2) premenopausal (aged 30-50 years) women, recruited from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) clinics, were allocated into 4 groups: (1) calcium (Ca) supplementation (2 tablets per day; each containing 500 mg calcium carbonate), (2) vitamin D (Vit D) supplementation (2 tablets per day; each containing 200 IU vitamin D3), (3) Ca + Vit D supplementation (2 tablets per day; each containing 500 mg calcium carbonate plus 200 IU vitamin D3), (4) placebo supplementation (2 tablets per day, containing micro-cellulose). All participants received a 500 kcal energy-restricted diet. Blood lipids, serum vitamin D, and anthropometric indices were measured at baseline and after 8 weeks. Physical activity and 3-day dietary records were taken at baseline and every 4 weeks during the intervention. RESULTS: At 8 weeks, triglyceride levels were significantly decreased in the Ca group (P = 0.002). Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels were decreased in the Ca + Vit D group (P = 0.04) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels decreased in both the Ca and Ca + Vit D groups (P = 0.006, P = 0.004, respectively). The results of one-way ANOVA indicated that changes in the serum lipid profile levels were not significantly different among the four groups (P = 0.90, P = 0.86, P = 0.61, P = 0.27, and P = 0.19, respectively for TG, TC, LDL, HDL, and LDL/HDL). The results were not significant even after adjusting for potential covariates. CONCLUSIONS: Although the results were not significantly different among the four treated groups at 8 weeks, within-group changes like the reduction in triglyceride and LDL levels, respectively in the Ca group and Ca + Vit D group, and HDL levels in both the Ca and Ca + Vit D groups were significant. These changes may have potentially significant public health implications.

OBJECTIVE: Low intake of B vitamins can lead to hyperhomocysteinaemia, which is reported as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, little is known about this relationship. Therefore, we decided to examine the association between dietary intake of B vitamins and cardiovascular risk factors in elderly men. METHODS: The present cross-sectional study consisted of 357 elderly men. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated and reliable food frequency questionnaire. All biochemical factors [fasting blood sugar (FBS), triglyceride (TG), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)], waist circumference (WC) and blood pressure (BP) were assessed using standard methods. RESULTS: A significant inverse association was observed between high dietary intake of total B vitamins (ORTotal B vitamins : 0.30; 95% CI: 0.10, 0.86; P = .01) and vitamin B9 (ORvitamin B9 : 0.20; 95% CI: 0.02, 0.52; P = .002) with high WC. Furthermore, an inverse association was observed between high dietary intake of vitamin B6 (ORvitamin B6 : 0.28; 95% CI: 0.08, 1.00; P = .05) and vitamin B9 (ORvitamin B9 : 0.20; 95% CI: 0.06, 0.70; P = .01) with hs-CRP level. CONCLUSIONS: In elderly men, a high dietary intake of total B vitamins and vitamin B9 was associated with lower odds of having a high WC. Similarly, high dietary intake of vitamin B6 and B9 was associated with lower odds of having a high hs-CRP level.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that choline and betaine are associated with improved anthropometric measures including, BMI and waist circumference however, results are largely inconsistent and limited studies exist in children. Our objective was to investigate the relationship between dietary choline and betaine, and anthropometric measurements among Iranian children. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, dietary information was collected for 788 six-year-old children, who attended Tehran health centers in 2018. We measured dietary intakes using a valid and reliable semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The USDA database was used to calculate dietary choline and betaine. We assessed anthropometric characteristics, physical activity, and socio-demographic status based on a reliable and valid protocol. Logistic regression adjusted for energy, physical activity, socio-economic status, and maternal age, physical activity, BMI, and HEI2015 was used to assess this association. RESULTS: Free choline, glycero-phospho-choline, phospho-choline, phosphatidyl-choline, total choline, and total betaine, and choline were not related to overweight, obesity, underweight and wasting in the crude and adjusted model after controlling for children's energy intake, children's physical activity, socio-economic status, maternal physical activity, and BMI. Betaine intake was associated with mid-arm circumference and risk of overweight. CONCLUSIONS: We did not find any evidence to support the association between dietary choline with anthropometric measurements among Iranian children. Further prospective studies with a large sample size in different populations are needed.
