RESUMO

High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) removes cholesterol, an essential component in lipid rafts, and this cholesterol removal can regulate protein attachment to lipid rafts, modulating their functionality in the immune cell response. Although severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection can alter the lipid profile, there is little information on the role of HDL-c and other lipids in prognostic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Mexican population. This study aims to evaluate the predictive value of HDL-c and lipid profile on severity and survival of 102 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 first wave. Our findings, derived from univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models, highlighted age and hypertension as significant predictors of survival (HR = 1.04, p = 0.012; HR = 2.78, p = 0.027), while gender, diabetes, and obesity showed no significant impact. Triglycerides and HDL-c levels notably influenced mortality, with elevated triglycerides and lower HDL-c associated with higher mortality risk (p = 0.032). This study underscores the importance of lipid profiles alongside traditional risk factors in assessing COVID-19 risk and outcomes. It contributes to the understanding of COVID-19 patient management and emphasizes the need for further investigation into the role of dyslipidemia in influencing COVID-19 prognosis, potentially aiding in refined risk stratification and therapeutic strategies.

Sperm capacitation, crucial for fertilization, occurs in the female reproductive tract and can be replicated in vitro using a medium rich in bicarbonate, calcium, and albumin. These components trigger the cAMP-PKA signaling cascade, proposed to promote hyperpolarization of the mouse sperm plasma membrane through activation of SLO3 K+ channel. Hyperpolarization is a hallmark of capacitation: proper membrane hyperpolarization renders higher in vitro fertilizing ability, while Slo3 KO mice are infertile. However, the precise regulation of SLO3 opening remains elusive. Our study challenges the involvement of PKA in this event and reveals the role of Na+/H+ exchangers. During capacitation, calcium increase through CatSper channels activates NHE1, while cAMP directly stimulates the sperm-specific NHE, collectively promoting the alkalinization threshold needed for SLO3 opening. Hyperpolarization then feeds back Na+/H+ activity. Our work is supported by pharmacology, and a plethora of KO mouse models, and proposes a novel pathway leading to hyperpolarization.

The relationship between sleep, glial cells, and the endocannabinoid system represents a multifaceted regulatory network with profound implications for neuroinflammation and cognitive function. The molecular underpinnings of sleep modulation by the endocannabinoid system and its influence on glial cell activity are discussed, shedding light on the reciprocal relationships that govern these processes. Emphasis is placed on understanding the role of glial cells in mediating neuroinflammatory responses and their modulation by sleep patterns. Additionally, this review examines how the endocannabinoid system interfaces with glia-immune signaling to regulate inflammatory cascades within the central nervous system. Notably, the cognitive consequences of disrupted sleep, neuroinflammation, and glial dysfunction are addressed, encompassing implications for neurodegenerative disorders, mood disturbances, and cognitive decline. Insights into the bidirectional modulation of cognitive function by the endocannabinoid system in the context of sleep and glial activity are explored, providing a comprehensive perspective on the potential mechanisms underlying cognitive impairments associated with sleep disturbances. Furthermore, this review examines potential therapeutic avenues targeting the endocannabinoid system to mitigate neuroinflammation, restore glial homeostasis, and normalize sleep patterns. The identification of novel therapeutic targets within this intricate regulatory network holds promise for addressing conditions characterized by disrupted sleep, neuroinflammation, and cognitive dysfunction. This work aims to examine the complexities of neural regulation and identify potential avenues for therapeutic intervention.

Monkeypox (Mpox) is an emerging zoonotic disease with the potential for severe complications. Early identification and diagnosis are essential to prompt treatment, control its spread, and reduce the risk of human-to-human transmission. This study aimed to develop a clinical diagnostic tool and describe the clinical and sociodemographic features of 19 PCR-confirmed Mpox cases during an outbreak in a nonendemic region of northwestern Mexico. The median age of patients was 35 years, and most were male. Mpox-positive patients commonly reported symptoms such as fever, lumbago, and asthenia, in addition to experiencing painful ulcers and a high frequency of HIV infection among people living with HIV (PLWH). Two diagnostic models using logistic regression were devised, with the best model exhibiting a prediction accuracy of 0.92 (95% CI: 0.8-1), a sensitivity of 0.86, and a specificity of 0.93. The high predictive values and accuracy of the top-performing model highlight its potential to significantly improve early Mpox diagnosis and treatment in clinical settings, aiding in the control of future outbreaks.

Maternal milk supports offspring development by providing microbiota, macronutrients, micronutrients, immune factors, and hormones. The hormone prolactin (PRL) is an important milk component with protective effects against metabolic diseases. Because maternal milk regulates microbiota composition and adequate microbiota protect against the development of metabolic diseases, we aimed to investigate whether PRL/PRL receptor signaling regulates gut microbiota composition in newborn mice at weaning. 16SrRNA sequencing of feces and bioinformatics analysis was performed to evaluate gut microbiota in PRL receptor-null mice (Prlr-KO) at weaning (postnatal day 21). The normalized colon and cecal weights were higher and lower, respectively, in the Prlr-KO mice relative to the wild-type mice (Prlr-WT). Relative abundances (Simpson Evenness Index), phylogenetic diversity, and bacterial concentrations were lower in the Prlr-KO mice. Eleven bacteria species out of 470 differed between the Prlr-KO and Prlr-WT mice, with two genera (Anaerotruncus and Lachnospiraceae) related to metabolic disease development being the most common in the Prlr-KO mice. A higher metabolism of terpenoids and polyketides was predicted in the Prlr-KO mice compared to the Prlr-WT mice, and these metabolites had antimicrobial properties and were present in microbe-associated pathogenicity. We concluded that the absence of the PRL receptor altered gut microbiota, resulting in lower abundance and richness, which could contribute to metabolic disease development.

Previous works showed that a Tepary bean lectin fraction (TBLF) induced apoptosis on colon cancer cells and inhibited early colonic tumorigenesis. One Tepary bean (TB) lectin was expressed in Pichia pastoris (rTBL-1), exhibiting similarities to one native lectin, where its molecular structure and in silico recognition of cancer-type N-glycoconjugates were confirmed. This work aimed to determine whether rTBL-1 retained its bioactive properties and if its apoptotic effect was related to EGFR pathways by studying its cytotoxic effect on colon cancer cells. Similar apoptotic effects of rTBL-1 with respect to TBLF were observed for cleaved PARP-1 and caspase 3, and cell cycle G0/G1 arrest and decreased S phase were observed for both treatments. Apoptosis induction on SW-480 cells was confirmed by testing HA2X, p53 phosphorylation, nuclear fragmentation, and apoptotic bodies. rTBL-1 increased EGFR phosphorylation but also its degradation by the lysosomal route. Phospho-p38 increased in a concentration- and time-dependent manner, matching apoptotic markers, and STAT1 showed activation after rTBL-1 treatment. The results show that part of the rTBL-1 mechanism of action is related to p38 MAPK signaling. Future work will focus further on the target molecules of this recombinant lectin against colon cancer.

Kinetic and probabilistic (Time-to-Failure, TTF) models were used to predict the color (L*, a*, b* total color differences (ΔE), Hue and Chroma) stability of Justicia spicigera leaves pigments subjected to different temperatures (40 - 80 °C) and pHs (2 - 12). The change in pH caused different hues (from 60° = orange red to 268° = deep-blue) due to the shift effect of anthocyanins in the extract. Temperatures higher than 60 °C increased the color degradation. High heat sensitivity was observed at pH 4 (Ea = 90.27) and 10 (Ea = 154.99 kJ/mol). The Time-to-Failure model for both ΔE and Hue describes the effect of pH and temperature in the J. spicigera extracts. High pHs and temperatures applied to the extracts increased the probability of showing ΔEs > 4 or Hue changes over 20 %. Nearby the neutral region of pH, pigments of J. spicigera were more stable. The TTF model might be a useful tool to describe and predict the behavior of pigments added to foods.

Obesity is a modern pandemic with negative consequences in women's reproductive health. Women with overweight and obesity can develop mammary gland alterations that unable exclusive breastfeeding. Obesity associates with a disturbed lactating mammary gland endocrine environment including a decreased action of the hormone prolactin (PRL), the master regulator of lactation. The PRL receptor and the action of PRL are reduced in the mammary gland of lactating rodents fed an obesogenic diet and are contributing factors to impaired lactation in obesity. Also, treatment with PRL improves milk yield in women with lactation insufficiency. This review focuses on the impact of diet-induced obesity in the lactating mammary gland and how obesity impairs the lactogenic action of PRL. Although obesity alters lactation performance in humans and rodents, the responsible mechanisms have been mainly addressed in rodents.

This work aimed to evaluate the effect of the addition 5°Bx Mexican honeysuckle (Justicia spicigera) extract (JSE) in spray dried encapsulates of whole and skimmed unfermented and fermented cow's milk with Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (LR). All samples were spray dried at 160 °C. Samples were analyzed in physical properties (moisture content, water activity (a w ), L∗, a∗, b∗, Hue, Chroma color parameters, particle size), LR content, and bioactive compounds (total anthocyanins (TA), total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant capacity (AC) using the DPPH assay). Results showed that the load of LR was in the range 6.79-7.44 Log10 (CFU/mL) cycles after fermentation, lower values were obtained when JSE was added before fermentation. In addition, LR remains after drying in fermented samples but decrease about 1 Log10 (CFU/mL) cycle. LR was 4.46 Log10 (CFU/mL) in the fermented skimmed milk-J. spicigera extract powder. All powders had a w and moisture content below 0.295 and 6.51%, respectively. Color of powders depended on the moment of addition of JSE and fermentation. Powders from fermented milk were pale brownish/orangey/red (Hue = 44.91-59.7) and unfermented and J. spicigera extract-maltodextrin solution (12% w/v) powders were purple (Hue = 314.52-326.68). Higher particle sizes (52.3-104.7 µm) were obtained with whole milk fermented and unfermented powders. On the contrary, skimmed milk and JSE without milk protein had values in the range 15.56-44.0 µm. TPC in powders were higher (16.96-33.81 mg GAE/g powder db) compared with TA (0.27-0.64 mg Peonidin-3,5-diglucoside/g powder db). TPC increased with fermentation and remain after spray drying. The AC and TPCs were highly correlated and had antioxidant capacity of 10.18 mg TE/g powder db. The principal component analysis showed that the type of milk and fermentation separate the powders in four groups, depending on their physical and antioxidant properties. Encapsulated pigments could be used in formulations in the food industry to increase bioactive compounds and pigments in foods.

Resumen: Objetivo: Identificar la literatura científica disponible, sobre factores de riesgo para desarrollar diabetes tipo 2 en homosexuales. Material y Métodos: Se realizaron búsquedas de artículos científicos publicados entre el año 2014 y 2020 en idioma inglés y español, en 5 bases de datos electrónicas: Biblioteca Virtual en Salud, Google Académico, Red de Revistas Científicas de América Latina y el Caribe, España y Portugal, Scientific Electronic Library Online y Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina de los Estados Unidos. Se hicieron combinaciones con los descriptores y operadores lógicos booleanos AND y OR: Obesidad OR Diabetes AND Risk AND Homosexual, Diabetes AND Homosexual, Obesity AND Homosexual, Obesity AND Diabetes AND Homosexual, Risk AND Diabetes AND Obesidad AND Homosexual de acuerdo al Medical Subject Headings. Para seleccionar los estudios se siguió la guía de Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools en español para estudios de prevalencia analíticos. Resultados: De 98 estudios, se incluyeron 8 estudios de origen de Estados Unidos y publicados en inglés. La muestra de los estudios oscilo entre 219 y 136,878 participantes con edad entre 18 y 65 años. La evidencia disponible sugiere que los principales factores de riesgo para el desarrollo de diabetes tipo 2 en homosexuales son: obesidad, depresión, estrés, falta de atención a la salud, la inactividad física, consumo de tabaco y alcohol, tener pre diabetes, hipertensión arterial, altos niveles de colesterol y antecedentes familiares con diabetes tipo 2. Conclusiones: En conclusión, algunos de estos factores de riesgos no son considerados por las organizaciones de diabetes, mostrando diferencias en la población heterosexual.


Abstract: Objective: To identify the available scientific literature on risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes in homosexuals. Material and Methods: Scientific articles published between 2014 and 2020 in English and Spanish were searched in 5 electronic databases: Virtual Health Library, Google Scholar, Network of Scientific Journals from Latin America and the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal, Scientific Electronic Library Online and National Library of Medicine of the United States. Combinations were made with the Boolean logical descriptors and operators AND and OR: Obesity OR Diabetes AND Risk AND Homosexual, Diabetes AND Homosexual, Obesity AND Homosexual, Obesity AND Diabetes AND Homosexual, Risk AND Diabetes AND Obesity AND Homosexual according to Medical Subject Headings. To select the studies, the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools guide in Spanish for analytical prevalence studies was followed. Results: Of 98 studies, 8 studies of United States origin and published in English were included. The sample of the studies ranged between 219 and 136 878 participants aged between 18 and 65 years. The available evidence suggests that the main risk factors for the development of type 2 diabetes in homosexuals are obesity, depression, stress, lack of health care, physical inactivity, tobacco and alcohol consumption, having prediabetes, high blood pressure, high Cholesterol levels and family history with type 2 diabetes. Conclusions: In conclusion, some of these risk factors are not considered by diabetes organizations, showing differences in the heterosexual population.

With plasmid-mediated antibiotic resistance thriving and threatening to become a serious public health problem, it is paramount to increase our understanding of the forces that enable the spread and maintenance of drug resistance genes encoded in mobile genetic elements. The relevance of plasmids as vehicles for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes, in addition to the extensive use of plasmid-derived vectors for biotechnological and industrial purposes, has promoted the in-depth study of the molecular mechanisms controlling multiple aspects of a plasmids' life cycle. This body of experimental work has been paralleled by the development of a wealth of mathematical models aimed at understanding the interplay between transmission, replication, and segregation, as well as their consequences in the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of plasmid-bearing bacterial populations. In this review, we discuss theoretical models of plasmid dynamics that span from the molecular mechanisms of plasmid partition and copy-number control occurring at a cellular level, to their consequences in the population dynamics of complex microbial communities. We conclude by discussing future directions for this exciting research topic.

Sperm acquire the ability to fertilize in a process called capacitation and undergo hyperactivation, a change in the motility pattern, which depends on Ca2+ transport by CatSper channels. CatSper is essential for fertilization and it is subjected to a complex regulation that is not fully understood. Here, we report that similar to CatSper, Cdc42 distribution in the principal piece is confined to four linear domains and this localization is disrupted in CatSper1-null sperm. Cdc42 inhibition impaired CatSper activity and other Ca2+ -dependent downstream events resulting in a severe compromise of the sperm fertilizing potential. We also demonstrate that Cdc42 is essential for CatSper function by modulating cAMP production by soluble adenylate cyclase (sAC), providing a new regulatory mechanism for the stimulation of CatSper by the cAMP-dependent pathway. These results reveal a broad mechanistic insight into the regulation of Ca2+ in mammalian sperm, a matter of critical importance in male infertility as well as in contraception.

Centruroides margaritatus scorpion stings are common in Colombia. However, the cardiovascular toxicity of the venom has not been clarified. AIM: To study the effect and mechanisms of action of the complete venom of C. margaritatus (CmV) on the murine cardiovascular system. METHODS: We evaluated the in vivo effect of CmV LD50 on the mean arterial pressure (MABP), heart rate, and surface electrocardiogram in male adult normotensive Wistar rats. Ex vivo, we evaluated the vascular reactivity of rat aortic rings to increasing concentrations (1 to 60 µg/mL) of CmV using the blockers L-NAME, indomethacin, seratrodast, and prazosin. RESULTS: In the first hour of poisoning, CmV increased the MABP. In the second hour after poisoning, the heart rate decreased as the normalized PR interval and QT corrected increased. After that, cardiovascular shock was demonstrated by a drastic fall in the MABP and signs of cardiac conduction system block. In aortic rings, CmV caused a direct vasoconstrictor effect mediated by alpha-1 adrenergic receptors and counteracted by nitric oxide. CONCLUSION: The direct vascular and probably the cardiac alpha-1 effects likely explain the transient hypertension and the maintenance of cardiac function, while interval lengthening may be due to K+ channel blockage. Afterwards, the effects of both the alpha-1 pathway and the K+ channel pathway converged, resulting in fatal cardiovascular shock. This knowledge could aid in understanding the dynamics of the effects of the venom and in designing treatments to address its cardiovascular effects.

Lectins are bioactive proteins with the ability to recognize cell membrane carbohydrates in a specific way. Diverse plant lectins have shown diagnostic and therapeutic potential against cancer, and their cytotoxicity against transformed cells is mediated through the induction of apoptosis. Previous works have determined the cytotoxic activity of a Tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius) lectin fraction (TBLF) and its anti-tumorigenic effect on colon cancer. In this work, lectins from the TBLF were additionally purified by ionic-exchange chromatography. Two peaks with agglutination activity were obtained: one of them was named TBL-IE2 and showed a single protein band in two-dimensional electrophoresis; this one was thus selected for coupling to quantum dot (QD) nanoparticles by microfluidics (TBL-IE2-QD). The microfluidic method led to low sample usage, and resulted in homogeneous complexes, whose visualization was achieved using multiphoton and transmission electron microscopy. The average particle size (380 nm) and the average zeta potential (-18.51 mV) were determined. The cytotoxicity of the TBL-IE2 and TBL-IE2-QD was assayed on HT-29 colon cancer cells, showing no differences between them (p ≤ 0.05), where the LC50 values were 1.0 × 10-3 and 1.7 × 10-3 mg/mL, respectively. The microfluidic technique allowed control of the coupling between the QD and the protein, substantially improving the labelling process, providing a rapid and efficient method that enabled the traceability of lectins. Future studies will focus on the potential use of the QD-labelled lectin to recognize tumor tissues.

KEY MESSAGE: The early flowering system HSP::AtFT allowed a fast evaluation of a gene containment system based on the construct PsEND1::barnase-barstar for poplar. Transgenic lines showed disturbed pollen development and sterility. Vertical gene transfer through pollen flow from transgenic or non-native plant species into their crossable natural relatives is a major concern. Gene containment approaches have been proposed to reduce or even avoid gene flow among tree species. However, evaluation of genetic containment strategies for trees is very difficult due to the long-generation times. Early flowering induction would allow faster evaluation of genetic containment in this case. Although no reliable methods were available for the induction of fertile flowers in poplar, recently, a new early flowering approach was developed. In this study, early flowering poplar lines containing the gene construct PsEND1::barnase-barstar were obtained. The PsEND1 promoter was chosen due to its early expression pattern, its versality and efficiency for generation of male-sterile plants fused to the barnase gene. RT-PCRs confirmed barnase gene activity in flowers, and pollen development was disturbed, leading to sterile flowers. The system developed in this study represents a valuable tool for gene containment studies in forest tree species.

This study aimed to investigate the stress response of Sparus aurata specimens fed with nutraceutical aquafeed brewer's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and spirulina (Arthrospira platensis). For that purpose, 96 (169.0 ± 2.8 g) animals were distributed randomly in 12 tanks (8 fish per tank, 4 replicates) and divided in 3 groups (D1, casein/gelatin, control; D2, brewer's yeast; D3, spirulina) and fed for 30 days. At the end of this period, fish from two replicates of each experimental diet were submitted to air exposure for 60 s while the fish from the other two replicates were maintained undisturbed (control). Afterwards, samples of blood, skin mucus, and head kidney were collected. The results revealed that after air exposure, cortisol, and glucose levels increased in the groups fed D1 (18.5 ± 2.6 mg/mL; 7.3 ± 0.6 mmol/L, respectively) and D2 (20.0 ± 6.2 mg/mL; 7.7 ± 0.6 mmol/L), but glucose not increased in fish fed D3 (13.7 ± 2.6 mg/mL; 5.5 ± 0.3 mmol/L). Lactate levels increased in all stressed groups, but in D1, its levels were significantly higher. After stress procedure, immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels in mucus increased only in fish fed D3 (0.1901 ± 0.0126 U/mL). Furthermore, there was a reduction in the expression of some genes involved in stress response (coxIV, prdx3, csfl-r, ucp1, and sod in fish fed D2 and D3). csf1 decreased only in stressed fish fed D2. However, cat increased in fish fed with D3. In summary, these findings points to the beneficial effects of spirulina and brewer's yeast to improve stress resistance in aquaculture practices of gilthead seabream.

Protein kinase A (PKA) is a broad-spectrum Ser/Thr kinase involved in the regulation of several cellular activities. Thus, its precise activation relies on being localized at specific subcellular places known as discrete PKA signalosomes. A-Kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs) form scaffolding assemblies that play a pivotal role in PKA regulation by restricting its activity to specific microdomains. Because one of the first signaling events observed during mammalian sperm capacitation is PKA activation, understanding how PKA activity is restricted in space and time is crucial to decipher the critical steps of sperm capacitation. Here, we demonstrate that the anchoring of PKA to AKAP is not only necessary but also actively regulated during sperm capacitation. However, we find that once capacitated, the release of PKA from AKAP promotes a sudden Ca2+ influx through the sperm-specific Ca2+ channel CatSper, starting a tail-to-head Ca2+ propagation that triggers the acrosome reaction. Three-dimensional super-resolution imaging confirmed a redistribution of PKA within the flagellar structure throughout the capacitation process, which depends on anchoring to AKAP. These results represent a new signaling event that involves CatSper Ca2+ channels in the acrosome reaction, sensitive to PKA stimulation upon release from AKAP.

La amplia distribución de los bacilos gram negativos no fermentadores en medios ambientales como el agua y especies vegetales cobra importancia al ser reconocidos como agentes causales de enfermedades en pacientes inmunocomprometidos, de allí la relevancia del porque debemos conocer la prevalencia y perfil de susceptibilidad de estos microorganismos en ambientes no hospitalarios. Materiales y Métodos: Estudio transversal, realizado en muestras hídricas de fuentes naturales y artificiales de almacenamiento para el consumo humano en la ciudad de Bogotá y municipios aledaños. La identificación se realizó a través de pruebas IMVIC y el perfil de resistencia a través del método de kirby bauer o E-TEST®. Resultados: Se obtuvieron 42 muestras, 7 (16,6%) con aislamientos de interés: 3 (60%) Pseudomonas spp, 2 (20%) Acinetobacter spp, 1 (10%) Sphingomonas paucimobilis y 1 (10%) Pantoea spp. El 70% presento resistencia a la ceftriaxona, el 30% a cefoxitina, 20% a gentamicina, 10% a ciprofloxacina y 10% a piperacilina-tazobactam. No se presentó resistencia a imipenem. Conclusión: 5 de 7 aislamientos revelaron un BGNNF de importancia en infección en humanos, siendo importante la resistencia encontrada a la ceftriaxona.


The wide distribution of non-fermenting gram negative bacilli in environmental media such as water and plants becomes important as they are recognized a cause of diseases in immunocompromised patients, that’s the reason why we should to know the prevalence and the susceptibility profile of these microorganisms in non-hospital environments. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study done with samples of natural and artificial water storage for human consumption in the city of Bogotá and surrounding municipalities. The identification was made through IMVIC tests and the resistance profile through the kirby bauer or E-TEST® method. Results: 42 samples were obtained, 7 (16.6%) with isolates of interest: 3 (60%) Pseudomonas spp, 2 (20%) Acinetobacter spp, 1 (10%) Sphingomonas paucimobilis and 1 (10%) Pantoea spp. The 70% had resistance to ceftriaxone, 30% to cefoxitin, 20% to gentamicin, 10% to ciprofloxacin and 10% to piperacillin-tazobactam. No resistance to imipenem was shown. Conclusion: 5 of 7 isolates revealed a BGNNF of importance in infection in humans, with an important resistance to ceftriaxone.

Resumen Los cambios en la educación superior vienen en parte precedidos por el impacto de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación, cuya incidencia se refleja en el cambio de roles del docente. Por consiguiente, en las modalidades b-learning se tiene que los docentes adquieren nuevos papeles, producto de la influencia social en el quehacer profesional desde las instituciones educativas y la sociedad en general. De lo anterior, se articula el enfoque de las representaciones sociales para caracterizar el conjunto de pensamientos cotidianos de los docentes de la Facultad de Estudios a Distancia, encontrando que los roles de facilitador, guía y acompañante adquieren preponderancia en la acción pedagógica del docente a manera de aspectos centrales de la representación.


Abstract Changes in higher education come in part preceded by the impact of the technologies of information and communication, whose incidence is reflected in the change of teacher's roles. Therefore, in b-learning modalities teachers must acquire new roles, which are the product of social influence in professional activities from educational institutions and society, in general. Otherwise, the approach of social representations to characterize the set of everyday thoughts of teachers in the Faculty of Distance Studies is articulated, finding out that the roles of a facilitator, a guide, and a companion acquire significance in the pedagogical action of the teaching as a way of key aspects of the representation.

Extracts with water:ethanol (100:0, 70:30, 50:50, 30:70, 0:100) solutions from fresh (F), just dried (JD), dried and stored for one year (DS) Justicia spicigera leaves were obtained using the stirring and ultrasound techniques. Extracts were analyzed in physicochemical and antioxidant characteristics. Identification of chemical compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) was also performed. 2.14±0.91, 5.67±1.70, and 8.52±4.97g Gallic acid equivalents/100g dry weight (d.w.) of phenolic compounds were found, in average, for F, JD, and DS J. spicigera, respectively. 2.22±1.31, 2.58±2.11, and 8.48±3.78g Trolox equivalents/100g d.w. were detected with the ABTS method and 0.49±0.33, 1.23±0.87, and 0.88±0.94g with the DPPH method for F, JD and DS J. spicigera, respectively. Eucalyptol, phytol, and azulene were identified as the main compounds. J. spicigera showed colors (green-iridescent, green-yellow, or pink of different intensities) and antioxidant characteristics depending on the solvent concentration. Extracts could be used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
