RESUMO

The electronic properties of SO2 at the surface of a water cluster were investigated by employing a combination of Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics and electron propagator theory (EPT). In our work, we utilized a revised version of the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) exchange-correlation functional, which incorporates empirical corrections for dispersion interactions in line with a recent study of the air-water interface conducted by Ohto et al. [J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 10(17), 4914-4919 (2019)]. Polarization effects induce a significant broadening of the electron binding energy distribution, as predicted by EPT. This broadening can result in a substantial increase in electron affinity, impacting the chemical reactivity of SO2 at the air-water interface, a topic of significant and recent research interest. We discuss the relationship between electron binding energies (EBEs) and the specific connections of SO2 to water. The results indicate that configurations involving an OS⋯H bond tend to yield higher electron affinities compared to complex formation through S⋯OW bonds. Surprisingly, SO2 molecules not bound to water molecules according to a specific criterion may also exhibit higher electron affinities. This feature can be explained by the role played by the polarization field from water molecules. Our best estimate for the HOMO-LUMO (H-L) gap of SO2 at the surface of a water cluster is 11.6 eV. Very similar H-L gaps are predicted for isolated and micro-solvated SO2. Fukui functions for the gas phase, and the micro-solvated SO2-H2O complex supports the view that the LUMO is predominantly localized on the SO2 moiety.

RESUMO

The present study employs high-level ab initio calculations to investigate the structure, vibrational frequencies, and electronic properties of H2S∙∙∙SO2. The analysis of vibrational frequencies reveals an intramolecular vibrational energy transfer phenomenon, where energy from the stretching modes of H2S is transferred to the ν1s mode of SO2. At the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ level, the interaction energy between H2S and SO2 is predicted to be 2.78 kcal/mol. Electron propagator theory calculations yield a HOMO-LUMO gap of 8.24 eV for H2S∙∙∙SO2. Furthermore, by utilizing ab initio results for the adiabatic ionization energy and electron affinity, the electrophilicity of H2S∙∙∙SO2 is estimated to be 2.01 eV. This value is similar to the electrophilicity of SO2, suggesting comparable reactivity and chemical behavior. The non-covalent interaction (NCI) analysis of the H2S∙∙∙SO2 complex emphasizes the significant contribution of non-covalent van der Waals interactions in its energetic stabilization.

RESUMO

Left ventricular hypertrophy is a risk factor for cardiovascular mortality in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD). Because icodextrin has a greater ultrafiltration power compared with glucose-based solutions for long dwell, it could improve left ventricular mass by reducing fluid overload. This was a randomized clinical trial that included patients on PD recruited from 2 teaching hospitals, in Sao Paulo-Brazil. Patients were allocated to the control glucose group (GLU) or the intervention icodextrin (ICO) group. Clinical and cardiac magnetic resonance image (MRI) parameters were evaluated at baseline and 6 months after randomization. The primary outcome was the change in left ventricular mass adjusted by surface area (ΔLVMI), measured by cardiac MRI. A total of 22 patients completed the study (GLU, N = 12 and ICO, N = 10). Baseline characteristics such as age, sex, underlying disease, and time on dialysis were similar in both groups. At baseline, 17 patients (77.3%) presented with left ventricular hypertrophy with no difference between groups (p = 0.748). According to the total body water (TBW)/extracellular water (ECW) ratio, 36.8% and 80% of patients from GLU and ICO groups, respectively, were considered hypervolemic (p = 0.044). During follow-up, ΔLVMI was 3.9 g/m (- 10.7, 2.2) in GLU and 5.2 (- 26.8, 16.8) in ICO group (p = 0.651). ΔLVMI correlated with change in brain natriuretic peptide (r = 0.566, p = 0.044), which remained significant in a multiple regression analysis. The use of the icodextrin-based solution in prevalent patients on PD compared with a glucose-based solution was not able to improve LMV. A larger randomized trial with a longer follow-up period may be needed to show changes in LVM in this patient population.Trial registration: this study has been registered at ReBEC (Registro Brasileiro de Ensaios Clinicos) under the identification #RBR-2mzhmj2, available at: https://ensaiosclinicos.gov.br/pesquisador .

RESUMO

Nowadays, there is increasing interest in developing strategies for the efficient and sustainable use of animal by-products, such as pork liver. In order to stabilize the product, a prior dehydration stage may be required due to its high perishability. The water removal process of pork liver is energy costly and time consuming, which justifies its intensification using novel technologies. In this sense, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of the airborne application of power ultrasound on the hot air-drying of pork liver. For that purpose, drying experiments were carried out at 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 °C on pork liver cylinders at 2 m·s-1 with (US) and without ultrasonic application (AIR). The drying process was modeled from the diffusion theory and, in the dried pork liver, the protein solubility was analyzed in order to determine the effect of drying on the protein quality. The ultrasound application increased the drying rate, shortening the drying time by up to 40% at 30 °C. The effect of power ultrasound at high temperatures (60 and 70 °C) was of lesser magnitude. Drying at 70 °C involved a noticeable reduction in the protein solubility for dried liver, while the impact of ultrasound application on the solubility was not significant (p > 0.05).

RESUMO

Peritoneal equilibration test (PET) is the gold standard for evaluating peritoneal transport, and measurement of the drain volume after 4-h dwell time with glucose 4.25% is a simple means of evaluating failure of ultrafiltration. The study objective was to verify if the measurement of the volume drained after 4 h dwell of icodextrin at 7.5% (ICO), has a better correlation with the parameters of PET. Patients in a peritoneal dialysis program (N = 35) underwent three procedures: PET; determination of the drain volume after a 4-h dwell with glucose 4.25%; and determination of the drain volume after a 4-h dwell with ICO. Among patients who were classified as high transporters, the ultrafiltration volume was greater after ICO use. The ICO ultrafiltration volume correlated negatively with the ratio between the 4- and 0-h dialysate glucose concentrations (D4/D0 ratio, r = -0.579; P = 0.002), correlating positively with the dialysate-to-plasma ratio for creatinine (D/PCr ratio, r = 0.474; P = 0.002). For ICO, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.867 and 0.792 for the D/PCr and D4/D0 ratios (P < 0.0001 and P = 0.004, respectively), compared with 0.738 and 0.710 for glucose 4.25% (P = 0.020 and P = 0.041, respectively). A cut-off volume of 141 mL discriminated high/high-average transporters from low/low-average transporters. Volume drained after ICO use better predicts peritoneal transport patterns than does that drained after the use of glucose 4.25%.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: There is a paucity of data on the prognosis for patients returning to peritoneal dialysis (PD) after a failed transplant. PD has an advantage over hemodialysis in preserving residual renal function, which is associated with better outcomes. METHODS: We have reviewed the electronic charts of patients on PD in a tertiary academic hospital for the last 8 years. We have compared technique survival, peritonitis-free survival, and residual diuresis in two groups: patients with graft failure which returned to PD (PD-KTx, N = 18) and patients starting PD for other causes (PD-not KTx, N = 163). RESULTS: The median follow-up was similar between groups [42(16,71) in PD-not KTx vs. 48(22,90) months in PD-KTx, p = 0.293]. Kaplan-Meier survival comparing PD-KTx and PD-not KTx showed no difference in technique survival (p = 0.196), and peritonitis-free survival (log-rank 0.238), which were confirmed in a fully adjusted Cox regression. Diuresis at baseline and at the end of the first year was similar between groups (p = 0.799 and p = 0.354, respectively). Six out of 18 patients from the PD-KTx group had the immunosuppression maintained and none of those had peritonitis. The reduction of diuresis across the first year of PD was significant for all patients, except for those on continued immunosuppressive therapy. CONCLUSION: PD is a worthy dialysis alternative after a failed kidney transplant, providing similar outcomes when compared to patients who started PD for other reasons.

RESUMO

Employing a sequential quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical approach for polar protic solvents, we study the absorption spectrum of eumelanin building blocks including monomers, dimers, and tetramers in pure water and methanol and three water-methanol binary mixtures having water molar fractions (Xw = 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75). The binary mixture of solvents is a common situation in experiments, but theoretical studies are limited to the use of continuum models. Here, we use explicit solvent molecules, and specific solute-solvent interaction is analyzed and seen to play an important role. Effects of the electronic polarization of solute by the environment were included using a reliable iterative scheme. The results illustrate that the monomers, dimers, and tetramers are preferably solvated by methanol, but the composition of the mixture in the vicinity of the solute molecules is different from the bulk composition with a preferential microsolvation (hydrogen bonds) in water for most species considered. It is observed that the short-range electrostatic polarization effects of the hydrogen bonds lead to a slight blue shift of the excitation energies when the concentration of water in the mixture is enhanced. For the same species, there is an enhancement of the higher-energy absorption intensity caused by long-range electrostatic interactions with the environment and that the behavior of the experimental spectrum, which is characterized by a nearly monotonic decay from the ultraviolet to the infrared, is qualitatively reproduced by the superposition of the absorption spectra of monomers, dimers, and tetramers in the liquid phase.

RESUMO

ATRX-DAXX-H3.3 chromatin remodeler complex is a well known epigenetic factor responsible for the heterochromatin maintenance and control. ATRX is an important nucleosome controller, especially in tandem repeat regions, and DAXX is a multi-function protein with particular role in histone H3.3 deposition due to its chaperone characteristic. Abnormalities in this complex have been associated with telomere dysfunction and consequently with activation of alternative lengthening of telomeres mechanism, genomic instability, and tumor progression in different types of cancer. However, the characterization of this complex is still incomplete in meningioma. We analyzed ATRX, DAXX and H3.3 expressions and the telomere length in a cohort of meningioma of different malignant grades. We observed ATRX upregulation at gene and protein levels in grade II/III meningiomas. A low variability of telomere length was observed in meningiomas across different ages and malignant grades, in contrast to the shortening of telomere length with aging in normal controls.

RESUMO

The enzyme Ferrochelatase (FeCH), which is naturally present in pork liver, catalyses the formation of Zinc-protoporphyrin (ZnPP), a natural pigment responsible for the typical color of dry-cured Italian Parma ham. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using high power ultrasound in continuous and pulsed modes to intensify the extraction of the enzyme FeCH from pork liver. US application during FeCH extraction led to an improved enzymatic activity and further increase in the formation of ZnPP. The optimal condition tested was that of 1 min in continuous US application, in which time the enzymatic activity increased by 33.3 % compared to conventional extraction (30 min). Pulsed US application required 5 min treatments to observe a significant intensification effect. Therefore, ultrasound is a potentially feasible technique as it increases the catalytic activity of FeCH and saves time compared to the conventional extraction method.

RESUMO

Pet rabbits have increased their popularity in a lot of countries. However, most of the laboratory profiles in rabbit medicine come from the observations made in rabbit as biomodels or meat production. So that further researches are necessary to obtain reference values for hematology and biochemical profiles in pet rabbits and the different breeds, especially, in relation to acid-base balance. The aim of this report was to offer the mean values of the main parameters connected with acid-base profile in Netherland Dwarf breed. Thirty-five healthy rabbits (15 males and 20 females) were studied. Venous blood sample from lateral saphenous vein was analyzed to measure: haematocrit, haemoglobin, blood urea nitrogen, glucose, blood pH, partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), total CO2, ions bicarbonate, chloride, sodium, potassium, base excess and anion Gap. Results showed a shorter range that those reported by different researchers. Moreover, differences between genders were showed in pCO2, its values were higher in males. It may be associated with a greater cellular metabolism. Values obtained in this research should be taken into account by veterinary clinicians for this breed in their clinical assessments. Besides, these values provide new results in parameters with few reference values.

RESUMO

For the first time, this study addresses the use of non-destructive ultrasound to monitor ham post-salting. For that purpose, the ultrasonic velocity (1 MHz) and the weight loss of hams were measured regularly every 2 days up to 8 weeks after salting. Additionally, for different post-salting times, internal salt and moisture content and hardness were measured at different locations from the ham surface. The experimental results reflected that the ultrasonic velocity increased as the ham weight decreased (26.1 m/s per kg), showing a satisfactory correlation between both variables (r = 0.95). The ultrasonic velocity was also correlated with the salt and moisture content. However, ham hardness remained fairly constant during post-salting, which confirmed that characteristic textural changes mainly occur during the salting and drying-maturation stages. Thus, the ultrasonic velocity could be a reliable parameter with which to monitor not only overall modifications in ham weight, but also internal changes of moisture and salt content during post-salting in a non-destructive way.

The electronic properties of azobenzene (AB) in interaction with gold clusters and adsorbed on the Au(111) surface are investigated by adopting a near-Hartree-Fock-Kohn-Sham (HFKS) scheme. This scheme relies on a hybrid Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional, in which the exact non-local HF exchange contribution to the energy is taken as 3/4. Ionization energies and electron affinities for gas phase AB are in very good agreement with experimental data and outer valence Green's function) calculations. The presence of C-H⋯Au interactions in AB-Aun complexes illustrates the role played by weak interactions between molecular systems and Au nanoparticles, which is in line with recent works on Au-H bonding. In AB-Aun complexes, the frontier orbitals are mainly localized on the gold platform when n ≥ 10, which indicates the transition from a molecular to a semiconducting regime. In the latter regime, the electronic density reorganization in AB-Aun clusters is characterized by significant polarization effects on the Au platform. The accuracy of the near-HFKS scheme for predicting adsorption energies of AB on Au(111) and the interest of combining exact non-local HF exchange with a non-local representation of the dispersion energy are discussed. Taking into account the significant computational cost of the exact non-local HF exchange contribution, calculations for the adsorption energies and density of states for AB adsorbed on Au(111) were carried out by using a quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics approach. The results strongly support near-HFKS as a promising methodology for predicting the electronic properties of hybrid organic-metal systems.

RESUMO

Theoretical results for the magnetic shielding of protonated and unprotonated nitrogens of eumelanin building blocks including monomers, dimers, and tetramers in gas phase and water are presented. The magnetic property in water was determined by carrying out Monte Carlo statistical mechanics sampling combined with quantum mechanics calculations based on the gauge-including atomic orbitals approach. The results show that the environment polarization can have a marked effect on nitrogen magnetic shieldings, especially for the unprotonated nitrogens. Large contrasts of the oligomerization effect on magnetic shielding show a clear distinction between eumelanin building blocks in solution, which could be detected in nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. Calculations for a π-stacked structure defined by the dimer of a tetrameric building block indicate that unprotonated N atoms are significantly deshielded upon π stacking, whereas protonated N atoms are slightly shielded. The results stress the interest of NMR experiments for a better understanding of the eumelanin complex structure.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hypokalemia is a well-described electrolyte disturbance in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD). Hyperkalemia, however, is still overlooked, although it also represents a risk factor for mortality. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and/or angiotensin receptor blockers (ACE/ARB), diuretics, and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) can interfere with potassium levels in these patients. METHODS: This is a retrospective study that evaluated monthly serum potassium in a 5-year period. Serum potassium disturbances were evaluated as time-average and number of hypo- and hyperkalemia episodes per patient. Prescribed medication such as ACE/ARB, diuretics, and omeprazole were recorded. RESULTS: We evaluated 2025 potassium measurements obtained from 146 patients on PD. Serum potassium ranged from 2.5 to 8.3 mEq/L with an average of 4.72 ± 0.74 mEq/L. Hypokalemia was found in 59 measurements (2.9%) obtained from 35 patients (23.9%) whereas hyperkalemia was demonstrated in 269 (13.3%) measurements obtained from 74 patients (50.7%). Hypokalemia was associated with low albumin (p = 0.022), and omeprazole use (p = 0.024). Black race was a protector factor (p = 0.031). Omeprazole-associated hypokalemia was seen only in non-anuric patients and remained an independent risk factor even after adjustments. Patients who had hyperkalemia were more likely to be anuric (p = 0.001) and in use of furosemide (p = 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Hyperkalemia and hypokalemia are very frequent in patients on PD and should be closely monitored. Interventional studies should address the impact of discontinuing omeprazole in the levels of potassium.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD) exhibit increased levels of uremic toxins, which are associated with poor outcomes. Recently, new dialysis membranes have allowed clearance of solutes with higher molecular weight, without significant albumin losses high-retention-onset-HD (HRO-HD). METHODS: Prospective crossover trial, in which 16 prevalent patients switched from high-flux HD (HF-HD) to online hemodiafiltration (olHDF) and HRO-HD for 4 weeks. The following variables were evaluated: pre- and post-dialysis serum concentrations of albumin, urea, phosphate (P), beta-2 microglobulin (ß2M), and total mass (TM) extraction and dialyzer clearance of urea, P, and ß2M. RESULTS: Comparing HF-HD, olHDF, and HRO-HD, respectively, there were no differences regarding pre-dialysis serum concentrations of albumin (3.94 ± 0.36, 4.06 ± 0.22, and 3.93 ± 0.41 g/dL, p = 0.495), urea (166 ± 29, 167 ± 30, and 164 ± 27 mg/dL, p = 0.971), P (4.9 ± 2.1, 5.2 ± 1.6, and 4.9 ± 2.1 mg/dL, p = 0.879), and ß2M (31.3 ± 7.1, 32.6 ± 8.6, and 33.7 ± 5.9 µg/mL, p = 0.646). ß2M clearance was significantly lower in HF-HD in comparison to both olHDF and HRO-HD: 43 (37-53) versus 64 (48-85) mL/min, p = 0.013, and 69 (58-86) mL/min, p = 0.015, respectively. Post-dialysis ß2M serum concentration was higher in HF-HD in comparison to olHDF and HRO-HD: 11.6 (9.6-12.4) vs. 5.7 (4.5-7.0) µg/mL, p = 0.001, and 5.6 (5.3-7.6) µg/mL, p = 0.001, respectively. TM extraction of urea, P, and ß2M were similar across the 3 dialysis modalities. CONCLUSIONS: olHDF and HRO-HD were superior to HF-HD regarding ß2M clearance, leading to lower post-dialysis ß2M levels.

RESUMO

The electron binding energies for the trans and cis conformers of azobenzene (AB), a prototypical photoswitch, were investigated by electron propagator theory (EPT). The EPT results are compared with data from photoelectron and electron transmission spectroscopies and complemented by the calculation of the differences between vertical and adiabatic ionization energies and electron affinities of the AB conformers. These differences are discussed in terms of the geometry changes associated with the processes of ionization and electron attachment. The results pointed out a major difference between these processes when we compare trans-AB and cis-AB. For trans-AB, electron attachment leads to a small geometry change, whereas for cis-AB, it is the ionized structure that keeps some similarity with the neutral species. We emphasize the interest of the present results for a better understanding of recent experiments on the dark cis-trans isomerization in different environments, specifically for azobenzenes in interaction with gold nanoparticles, where the proposed cis-trans isomerization mechanism relies on electron transfer induced isomerization.
