RESUMO

The clinical signs and pathological anatomical findings at post-mortem examination of two rabbits are characteristic of those of 'viral haemorrhagic disease'. Because of the very high mortality, the clinical signs, and the acute course, this viral disease, which has only recently been reported in Europe, could be mistaken for poisoning.

RESUMO

This article describes three castrated tomcats that were treated with progestins. All three developed symptoms of fibroepithelial hyperplasia of the mammary gland, probably as a consequence of this treatment. This disease is commonly found in intact young female cats, pregnant cats, and progestin treated cats. Therapeutical consequences are dealt with and the importance of (histo)pathological investigation to 'Good Veterinary Practice' is pointed out.

RESUMO

In a female family line of Holstein-Friesian cattle a series of trembling calves was born within a period of ten years. All trembling animals were male; female calves appeared normal. At necropsy of one calf severe degenerative lesions of spinal cord and brain white matter were observed. Both myelin and axons were lost and some macrophages occurred within digestion chambers. Obviously degenerated neurones were not found. The lesion was interpreted as a single recessive sex-linked hereditary trait.

RESUMO

Necropsy findings of 1041 fattening pigs, during the period of 1979-1989 are presented. The pigs originated from one veterinary practice association. Enterotoxicosis associated with E. coli serotype O149:K91:K88 was the most prevalent diagnosis, followed by fibrinous pleuropneumonia due to Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. A decrease was noticed for Aujeszky disease during the late years. After 1985 an increase was found for torsio mesenterialis. In 1.7% of the cases no post mortem diagnosis could be made.

RESUMO

Increased mortality occurred among sows in a pig-breeding unit during a few months. It was concluded that gastric torsion was one of the causes of death. This disease is becoming increasingly important in large intensive units, also in the Netherlands. Little is so far known of the origin of this syndrome. The feeding system and the quality of the food (fine-grained feed, contamination by toxic agents) could be a factor in the pathogenesis. Closer investigation of this economic problem would appear to be advisable.

RESUMO

From January 1st 1979, the Veterinary Association of South-East Drenthe made use of the services of a self-operated clinical-pathological laboratory. In the present paper, the reasons for choosing this form of service and the possibilities of research available to the laboratory are stated. In addition, the extent of activities over the last six years is reviewed. Experience so far is favourably assessed, both by veterinary practitioners and by clients.

RESUMO

High titers cold agglutinins were demonstrated in the serum of a 7 year old female toy Pinscher with a hemolytic anemia. In vitro, the serum did not show distinct hemolytic properties, but it fixed complement components to both the patient's own red cells and randomly sampled canine erythrocytes and agglutinated these cells at high dilutions at low temperatures (optimally at 0 degrees C). Serum electrophoresis on cellulose acetate membranes failed to reveal a paraproteinemia. Normal canine red cells sensitized with the patient's serum at 0 degrees C and eluted at 40 degrees C, released a cold agglutinin identifiable as IgM by immunoelectrophoresis. Neither IgA nor IgG were detectable in a concentrate of the eluate. The auto-antibody showed no specificity against the canine blood group A antigen and did not react with human O-erythrocytes, irrespective of whether these carried the I- or i-antigens. Following erroneous exposure of the dog to cold, cyanosis and serious gangrene developed at the acra (the ears, nose and feet). In addition, symptoms indicating diffuse intravascular coagulation were observed both hematologically and on pathological-anatomical examination. No primary disease could be demonstrated.
