RESUMO

With the increasing life expectancy and improved quality of life, the conventional prosthodontic removable treatment modalities are being replaced with implant retained fixed prostheses. A full-arch conventional rehabilitation of edentulous ridges requires six to ten dental implants. However, some patients demand fixed implant-supported prostheses inspite of medical conditions and economic concerns. Also in completely edentulous cases, the insufficient bone morphology directs the treatment plan towards alternatives such as cantilever prostheses, short implants or ridge augmentation procedures. These clinical conditions have brought in a quantum shift in treatment planning towards the 'all on 4 protocol' providing immediately loaded fixed prosthesis supported by 4 implants thereby providing optimum and immediate restoration of function and esthetics.

The aim of this study was to correlate nasal patency with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in obese versus non-obese patients using Acoustic Rhinometry (AR). Eccovision® Acoustic Rhinometer equipment was used to compare nasal cross-sectional areas (CSA1,2 & 3 corresponding to nasal valve region, anterior portion of middle & inferior turbinate and posterior portion of middle & inferior turbinate respectively) and volume in age and gender matched sample divided into three groups: Group 1: Non-obese patients without OSA (25 patients, 13 males and 12 females); Group 2: Non-obese patients with OSA (25 patients, 14 males and 11 females); Group 3: Obese patients with OSA (25 patients, 13 males and 12 females). The mean nasal cross-sectional areas and volume were lower in Group 2 compared to Group 1 but statistically non-significant (P value > 0.05 for all). The mean nasal cross-sectional areas and volume were significantly lower in Group 3 as compared to Groups 1 and 2 (P value < 0.05 for all). BMI showed a statistically significant positive (direct) correlation with AHI in Groups 2 and 3 (P value < 0.05 for both). The nasal cross-sectional areas and volume showed a statistically significant negative (inverse) correlation with AHI in Groups 2 and 3 (P value < 0.05 for both). OSA diagnosed cases with high BMI may not present with an obvious nasal obstruction; the nasal patency may still be compromised due to reduced nasal lumen secondary to obesity. AR, being cost-effective and non-invasive modality; is advocated to evaluate pre-treatment nasal patency, as well as follow up evaluation to ascertain improvement after the intervention.

RESUMO

Plasma cell gingivitis (PCG) is a diagnostic dilemma for clinicians. It is also referred to as atypical gingivostomatitis, idiopathic gingivostomatitis, allergic gingivostomatitis, and plasma cell gingivostomatitis which are characterized by bright fiery red gingiva with spontaneous bleeding on slight provocation. It is often confused with inflammatory gingival enlargement, erythematosus lichen planus, and other lesions. One such rare and benign entity is discussed in this article and managed after thorough clinical, radiological, histopathology, immunohistochemistry analysis.

Background: Relapse is a continuing process and should be evaluated on a long rather than short term. Materials and Methods: Treatment records of 46 patients who underwent mandibular orthognathic surgery were divided into two groups, i.e. Group 1: Mandibular Advancement (MA) surgery (n = 26) and Group 2: Mandibular Setback (MS) surgery (n = 20). Lateral cephalograms were traced at T0 (01 week before surgery), T1 (01 week after surgery), T2 (01 year after surgery) and T3 (minimum 05 years after surgery) to study short- and long-term skeletal and dental relapse in horizontal, vertical and angular parameters selected for the study. Relapse was correlated with gender, age, amount of surgical movement and intra-operative change in mandibular plane angle to study effect of these factors on relapse. Results: All horizontal, vertical and angular parameters studied showed significant relapse at short term (from T1 to T2) which continued significantly till long-term evaluation (T2 to T3) in both groups (P value < 0.001). Horizontal relapse in all parameters, vertical relapse in all parameters (except Pog and overbite at T1-T2) and angular relapse in all parameters (except Ramus inclination at T1-T2) was significantly higher in Group 2 compared to Group 1 (P value < 0.001 for all). Relapse showed significant and positive correlation with amount of surgical movement and intra-operative change in mandibular plane angle in both groups (P value < 0.05 for all). Conclusion: Both MA and MS surgeries show significant relapse on both short- and long-term evaluation which it is higher in MS as compared to MA surgeries.

INTRODUCTION: The changes in length and height of tongue following mandibular setback (MS) surgery may affect pharyngeal airway dimensions. There is limited literature correlating tongue dimensional changes with linear and volumetric airway changes following MS with bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) in skeletal class III patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Treatment records of 18 patients who underwent MS with BSSRO were evaluated for changes in tongue and linear airway dimensions, mean airway volume and area at T1 (1-week pre-surgery), T2 (6-month post-surgery) and T3 (2-year post-surgery). Amount of MS was recorded from case sheets of patients. Mean tongue length reduced, whereas mean tongue height increased at T2 compared to T1 (P value = 0.001 for both). Linear, area and volumetric airway parameters at T2 were significantly reduced (P value = 0.001). All parameters showed statistically nonsignificant increase from T2 to T3 (P value > 0.05). Correlation analysis showed that change in tongue length at T3 did not show statistically significant correlation with amount of MS, changes in linear, area and volumetric airway parameters (P value > 0.05). However, the change in tongue height at T3 showed a significant (P value < 0.05) negative correlation (r value = - 0.742) with change in posterior airway space (PAS). CONCLUSIONS: The appraisal of tongue length and height after MS surgery should be an integral part of diagnosis and treatment planning. The retro-positioning of tongue and increase in its height after MS surgery may compromise pharyngeal airway especially PAS. Additional options such as bi-jaw surgery, debulking of tongue volume and genioplasty should be explored to minimize adverse effects post-surgically.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate changes in airway dimensions following mandibular setback with conventional orthognathic approach (COA) and surgery-first orthognathic approach (SFOA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Treatment records of 20 patients who underwent mandibular setback with SFOA/COA were divided into two groups (COA and SFOA, ten patients in each group). Acoustic pharyngometry values were obtained at T0 (01 week prior to surgery), T1 (01-month post-surgery) and T2 (01-year post-surgery). Percentage change in mean volume and area was obtained at T1 (T1-T0) to evaluate airway changes and at T2 (T2-T1) to compare relapse of airway changes in both groups. Changes in airway per mm setback at T1 (T1-T0) and T2 (T2-T1) were also obtained in both groups. RESULTS: For both parameters, SFOA showed greater reduction at T1 and greater relapse at T2 as compared to COA. The reduction in airway volume at T1 was 0.56 mm/mm setback in COA compared to 1.06 mm/mm setback in SFOA (P-value > 0.05). The relapse in airway volume at T2 was 0.15 mm/mm setback in COA compared to 0.25 mm/mm setback in SFOA (P-value > 0.05). The reduction in area at T1 was 0.062 mm/mm setback in COA compared to 0.110 mm/mm setback in SFOA (P-value > 0.05). The relapse in area at T2 was 0.016 mm/mm setback in COA compared to 0.034/mm setback in SFOA (P-value < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In setback cases, SFOA has greater airway reduction immediate post-surgically and greater relapse at 01-year follow-up. Predicting these changes at diagnostic and treatment planning stage may prevent potential adverse events on airway.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the nasal patency using acoustic rhinometry (AR) in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and to ascertain the rhinological importance of the same. METHODS: Eccovision Acoustic Rhinometer system was used for assessment of nasal cross-sectional area (CSA) and volume in 15 patients with UCLP. The CSA1, CSA2, and CSA3, which represent the CSA at the nasal valve area and anterior end of the inferior turbinate, the anterior half of the inferior turbinate and the anterior end of the middle turbinate, and the region of middle portion of middle turbinate, respectively, were compared on the cleft and non-cleft side. RESULTS: The mean ± SD of CSA1, CSA2, and CSA3 as well as the overall nasal CSA were significantly higher on non-cleft side compared to cleft side (P value < .001). The mean ± SD of nasal volume was also significantly higher in non-cleft side compared to cleft side (P value < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The nasal patency among patients with UCLP demonstrates a range of impairments that can be objectively measured using acoustic rhinometry. The orthodontic, orthopedic, or orthosurgical management of maxillary deficiency in these patients can affect the nasal area and volume and can have an impact on breathing, speech, and sleep. The pretreatment assessment may be useful to identify patients who are at potential risk of deterioration of nasal patency and airway post-intervention. Taking into consideration the multiple diagnostic procedures in the course of long-term multidisciplinary treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate, a noninvasive investigation technique such as AR may be the preferred mode of investigation to ascertain nasal patency.

AIM: The aim of this review was to investigate utility or futility of facebow for fabrication of complete denture prosthesis to maximise clinical efficiency and acceptability of complete dentures. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Systematic review following PRISMA guidelines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A study question was designed based on PICOT model which was used to evaluate whether facebow transfer is required or not for fabrication of complete denture prosthesis. An extensive search was carried out manually and using electronic databases such as PubMed-Medline, Cochrane, Google Scholar, and Clinicaltrials.gov. Parameters under review included patient satisfaction, masticatory efficiency, occlusal adjustments, clinician time, stability and retention. Boolean operators, MeSH terms and limiters were applied to develop the search and reach to conclusive studies pertaining to study design. Literature dated between 1950 and 2019 were selected. The data extraction and assessment of the studies was done by two independent investigators. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: No meta-analysis was conducted due to heterogeneity of data obtained. RESULTS: 13690 studies were shortlisted, 13672 were excluded based on title and abstract. By the end of search phase, 07 RCTs were considered relevant. 04 studies concluded comparable/ no differences in outcome with and without use of facebow for fabrication of complete denture prostheses, whereas 03 studies concluded better results without the use of facebow. CONCLUSION: The use of facebow results in fabrication of complete denture prostheses with similar results in terms of clinical efficiency and patient acceptability as compared to simplified techniques using anatomical landmarks. Variations in assessment criteria, non uniform distribution of sample size amongst different clinical trials and subjective questionnaire based criteria are the weaker links in the review. Extensive research and long term standardised studies with objective criteria for assessment are required for comprehensive and conclusive results to establish the need for change in clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: The spatial position and dimensions of oral and pharyngeal soft tissues change post-mandibular advancement (MA) surgery which involves changes in position of soft palate, tongue and associated musculature. There is no study which simultaneously evaluates changes in tongue length and height post-MA surgery and correlates these changes with changes in upper airway dimensions and the amount of MA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Treatment records of 18 patients that underwent MA with bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy were evaluated at T1 (01 week before surgery) and T2 (06 months post-surgery). Linear airway and tongue measurements were done on lateral cephalogram. Mean volume and mean pharyngeal area values were recorded from the acoustic pharyngometry (AP) records of patients. RESULTS: A statistically significant increase in tongue length (P value < 0.001) and nonsignificant change in tongue height were observed at T2 (P value > 0.05). A statistically significant increase in airway parameters recorded on both lateral cephalogram and AP was observed at T2 (P value < 0.001). Correlation analysis did not show a statistically significant correlation of change in tongue length and tongue height at T2 with the amount of MA, change in airway parameters on lateral cephalogram and AP (P value > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Mandibular advancement surgery is a viable option for improvement in pharyngeal airway in skeletal Class II patients with retrognathic mandible. Changes in tongue length observed in our study may correspond to the stretch of protruders of tongue, especially genioglossus, and may point toward possible relapse on a long-term follow-up.

RESUMO

The term "forensic science" involves forensic (or forensis, in Latin), which means a public discussion or debate. In a more modern context, however, forensic applies to courts or the judicial system. Combine that with science, and forensic science means applying scientific methods and processes to solving crimes. People can be identified by their fingerprints, foot creases, and from traces of their DNA from blood, skin, hair, saliva, and semen by DNA analysis. However, in situations where these records are unavailable or unusable due to the nature of the disaster, the dental records and aids prove to be useful for victim identification. This article aims at highlighting the importance of the dental records and the forensic odontology in the accurate and efficient identification of the conflict victims or deceased to serve as an important adjunct to the forensic medicine in a simplified manner.

BACKGROUND: A study of first indigenous titanium dental implant developed by DRDO was undertaken at INMAS, Delhi. The aim was to establish the time taken for osseointegration, along with objectives to define the time of implant loading and compare the osseointegration of indigenous dental implants with already established dental implant systems. METHODS: 21 subjects rehabilitated using 39 indigenous dental implants were evaluated by bone SPECT before implantation and at regular intervals towards establishing the aim and objectives. RESULTS: The rise followed by fall in Osteoblastic activity indicates the postoperative physiologic changes, which peaked at 2 weeks (mean) post-implantation and falls off to pre-implantation levels in 12 weeks (mean) indicating completion of osseointegration, healing and time of loading. CONCLUSION: It can be summarized that the Osteoblastic activity of indigenous dental implants completes within three months, which can be taken as the time required for complete healing/osseointegration and loading the implants. On comparison with the available data of already established implants the figures appear similar, indicating indigenous implants to be similar in biologic behaviour.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to outline a simple, cost-effective technique for obturation of primary tooth root canals. A total of 75 primary teeth were treated in 52 subjects by the technique discussed, i.e. injecting plastic flowable material into the root canals after desired preparation, using disposable needle and syringe. All the patients were followed up for 3 years and 6 months, with no clinical or radiologic evidence of pathology or need for untimely extraction. In conclusion, the technique described is simple, economical, can be used with almost all filling materials used for the purpose, and is easy to master with minimal chances of failure.

Lysozyme is a low-molecular-weight protein with antimicrobial properties. An experiment was conducted to investigate the response of piglets receiving a water-soluble lysozyme supplement [Entegard (EG), Neova Technologies Inc., Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada; 4,000 lysozyme units/mg] after oral challenge with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). A total of 36 individually housed weanling pigs were randomly allotted to 1 of the 4 treatments, with 9 replicates per treatment. Treatments were a control (CONT, no additive), antibiotic (AB; 2.5 g/kg of feed of antibiotic with chlortetracycline, sulfamethazine, and penicillin), and EG delivered in the drinking water at concentrations of 0.1% (EG1) and 0.2% (EG2). All pigs received a basal diet similar in composition and nutrients, except for pigs receiving the AB diet, which had an added antibiotic. Pigs were acclimated to treatments for a 7-d period to monitor growth performance. On d 8, blood samples were collected from each pig to obtain serum, and each pig was gavaged with 6 mL (2 × 10(9) cfu/mL) of ETEC solution. Pigs were monitored for another 7 d to assess incidences of diarrhea and growth performance, and then all pigs were killed to obtain intestinal tissue and digesta samples. Treatments did not influence growth performance throughout the study. Greater ETEC counts were observed in the ileal mucosal scrapings (P = 0.001) and colonic digesta (P = 0.025) of pigs in the CONT group compared with pigs in the AB and EG1 groups. Pigs receiving AB and EG1 had greater (P < 0.05) small intestinal weights and ileal villus heights than pigs receiving CONT; however, the ileal villus height-to-crypt depth ratio was greater in pigs fed the AB diet (1.69) compared with those fed the CONT diet (1.34), whereas pigs receiving EG1 were intermediate. Pigs in the EG1 group showed greater (P < 0.001) serum tumor necrosis factor α and IL-6 concentrations before ETEC challenge; however, at 7 d postchallenge, pigs receiving EG2 showed the least (P < 0.05) circulating tumor necrosis factor α and IL-6 concentrations. Overall, better intestinal growth and development, as well as decreased ETEC counts on the intestinal mucosa and serum proinflammatory cytokines, suggest that EG can maintain gut health and function in piglets commensurate with antibiotics. However, it is noteworthy that at the largest dose tested, EG seemed to have a dramatic effect on proinflammatory cytokines but had a minimal or no effect on the other response criteria.

Postweaning diarrhea in pigs is frequently caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88 (ETEC). The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of E. coli probiotics (PRO) in young pigs challenged with E. coli K88. We also tested the synbiotic interaction with raw potato starch (RPS), which can be used as a prebiotic. Forty 17-day-old weaned piglets were randomly assigned to four treatments: treatment 1, positive-control diet (C), no probiotics or RPS but containing in-feed antibiotics; treatment 2, probiotic (PRO), no feed antibiotics plus a 50:50 mixture of probiotic E. coli strains UM-2 and UM-7; treatment 3, 14% RPS, no antibiotics (RPS); treatment 4, 14% RPS plus a 50:50 mixture of probiotic E. coli strains UM-2 and UM-7, no antibiotics (PRO-RPS). The pigs were challenged with pathogenic E. coli K88 strains on day 7 of the experiment (24-day-old pigs) and euthanized on day 10 of the experiment (35-day-old pigs). Probiotic and pathogenic E. coli strains were enumerated by selective enrichment on antibiotics, and microbial community analysis was conducted using terminal restriction length polymorphism analysis (T-RFLP) of 16S rRNA genes. The combination of raw potato starch and the probiotic had a beneficial effect on piglet growth performance and resulted in a reduction of diarrhea and increased microbial diversity in the gut. We conclude that the use of E. coli probiotic strains against E. coli K88 in the presence of raw potato starch is effective in reducing the negative effects of ETEC in a piglet challenge model.

Weaned piglets commonly suffer from gastroenteritis caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88. Our aim was to produce E. coli strains that inhibited the growth of E. coli K88 and could be used as a probiotic against postweaning diarrhea. The inclusion criteria for the probiotics were that in addition to being able to inhibit E. coli K88, they also needed to be negative for virulence genes commonly associated with E. coli. A total of 463 E. coli isolates from the cattle rumen, cattle feces, swine feces, and soil were screened against 18 E. coli K88 clinical isolates using an agar diffusion technique. Growth inhibition of the most sensitive K88 indicator strain 2-12 occurred for 121/463 isolates: 96/358 from cattle feces, 0/33 from rumen fluid, 9/35 from swine feces, and 16/37 from soil. Of the 121 positive strains, 71/121 were negative for toxin genes (LT, STa, STb, VT1, and VT2). The 14 most inhibitory strains were screened against a range of substrates to assess the ability to utilize carbohydrates that could be included in the diet to enhance their ability to compete in the gut. Two strains, UM-2 and UM-7, were weak utilizers of starch and inulin. In vitro competition assays between the probiotic strains and E. coli K88 strain 2-12 were conducted with glucose as the only carbon source (minimal medium; MM), MM + 2% starch, or MM + 2% inulin. The UM-2 and UM-7 strains were able to outcompete strain 2-12 when glucose was the only carbon source, indicating that inhibitory activity was produced against 2-12 independent of carbon source. The UM-2 strain outcompeted strain 2-12 in assays in which potato starch or inulin was the only carbon source; the ability of 2-12 to maintain its concentrations in the culture were probably the result of cross feeding of breakdown sugars of starch and inulin that could be utilized by 2-12. In contrast, UM-7 did not grow as well as UM-2 on starch and inulin and 2-12 declined rapidly in successive cultures likely because of the lack of breakdown products of starch and inulin produced by UM-7. We conclude that probiotic E. coli without known toxins and that produce inhibitory activity against E. coli that cause postweaning diarrhea can be produced. In addition, the ability to utilize starch or inulin is an important phenotype because it likely gives the probiotic a competitive advantage in the gut.

We evaluated the effect of raw potato starch (RPS) on growth performance, postweaning diarrhea, and gastrointestinal microbial populations in weaned piglets. Eighty-four piglets were weaned at 17 +/- 2 d of age with an average BW of 6.0 +/- 0.9 kg. Pigs were blocked by BW and assigned to 1 of 4 diets in a randomized complete block design with 7 replicate pens per diet and 3 pigs per pen. Treatments were 1) a positive control (PC) containing an antibiotic, 2) a negative control (NC) with no RPS and no antibiotic, 3) NC + 7% RPS (7% RPS), and 4) NC + 14% RPS (14% RPS). Diets were corn-wheat-soybean meal-based and formulated to meet NRC (1998) recommendations. The ADG, ADFI, and G:F ratio were determined weekly. Fecal consistency (FC) scoring was determined daily. After wk 3, 1 pig with a BW closest to the pen mean was killed to evaluate ileal and colonic mucosal-attached Escherichia coli and lactic acid bacteria, as well as digesta pH, VFA, and ammonia N concentrations. The DNA was extracted from ileum and colon digesta and used for molecular microbial evaluations using terminal-RFLP analysis of 16S rDNA genes. The ADG for wk 1 was greater (P < 0.01) for the PC diet, but diet had no effect on ADG during wk 3. The ADFI did not differ among treatments during the first 2 wk, and ADFI was least for 7% RPS diet during wk 3. The NC diet had a greater (P < 0.05) FC score during wk 1 than other treatments, but diet had no effect on FC score during wk 2 and 3. Diets had no effect on the colon lactic acid bacterial counts; however, the PC diet had decreased (P < 0.05) colon E. coli counts than other treatments. Ileum and colon digesta pH and total VFA concentrations did not differ among treatments. Pigs fed with 7 and 14% RPS diets had greater (P < 0.05) ileum ammonia N concentration compared with pigs fed with other diets. There was more diarrhea (P < 0.05) in the 14% than the 7% RPS and control treatments at d 21. This difference correlated with a decline (P < 0.05) in microbial diversity in the colon. We concluded that 7% RPS can be used to prevent postweaning diarrhea in weaned piglets, but there are no effects on growth performance.

Effects of chop length (shorter: 6 mm, or longer: 19 mm) of alfalfa silage and oat silage were determined in 16 mid-lactation Holstein cows, 4 of which were rumen cannulated, using a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square design with a 2 x 2 arrangement of treatments. Experimental periods were 21 d long and consisted of 14 d of adaptation and 7 d of sampling. Cows received a total mixed ration containing [dry matter (DM) basis] 42.0% barley grain-based energy supplement, 10% protein supplement, and 24% of DM longer chop or shorter chop alfalfa silage and 24% of DM longer chop or shorter chop oat silage. Rumen pH was measured continuously, and rumen liquid flow rates were determined in rumen-cannulated cows. Feeding behavior was determined by videotaping, and meal patterns were determined by continuously weighing the feed in the bunk of 8 cows. Reducing the chop length of alfalfa silage and oat silage reduced the average geometric particle length from 14.2 to 10.9 mm and from 13.4 to 10.4 mm, respectively. Reducing the alfalfa chop length did not affect feed intake, whereas reducing the oat silage chop length increased DM intake from to 19.4 to 21.2 kg/d. Reducing the chop lengths of alfalfa silage and oat silage chop length did not affect milk production, rumen fermentation, feeding behavior, meal patterns, and blood metabolites. Daily milk yield, milk fat percentage, and milk protein percentage averaged 36.1 kg/d, 3.00%, and 3.16%, respectively, across diets. The low milk fat percentages suggest that the diets induced subacute ruminal acidosis. This was also substantiated by the rumen pH, which was below 5.6 for more than 122 min/d for all diets. The onset of subacute ruminal acidosis despite apparently adequate dietary neutral detergent fiber content and particle size distribution as well as the long duration of chewing might be attributed to sorting against long feed particles.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli is a major problem in the swine industry and results in scouring, increased mortality, and poor performance in the period immediately postweaning. The traditional way to control this problem is to include subtherapeutic antibiotics in the feed, but this is no longer acceptable to consumers; thus, alternatives to antibiotics are needed. One of the supplements that has been effective in reducing scouring in the absence of antibiotics is animal blood products produced from the rendering process. This is also becoming a problem because of concerns regarding the transfer of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies to humans from animals. In this research, we investigated the effects of spray-dried porcine plasma (SDPP), a Bacillus subtilis direct-fed microbial (DFM), a blend of organic acids, and sweeteners on E. coli-induced scouring. A total of 108 pigs of approximately 17 d of age were assigned to 6 treatments, with 3 pigs per pen, in 2 blocks, with each block having 3 replicates. The 2 blocks were initiated approximately 2 mo apart, because a sufficient number of pigs were not available that met our inclusion criteria in the first block. Diet 1 was a negative control containing no antibiotics (NC). Diet 2 was the positive control and included the same ingredient composition as NC except that antibiotics (110 mg/kg of chlortetracycline, 110 mg/kg of sulfamethazine, and 55 mg/kg of penicillin) were added (PC). Diet 3 was equal to the NC, but with a B. subtilis probiotic (DFM). Diet 4 was the NC to which SDPP was added. Diet 5 was the NC plus a combination of SDPP and DFM (SDPP + DFM). Diet 6 was the NC plus a combination of supplements, including SDPP and a blend of organic acids, DFM, and a sweetener (Blend). At 24 d of age, the pigs were experimentally infected with 6.3 x 10(9) cfu/mL of E. coli K88. All pigs were euthanized 7 d after infection and tissues were obtained for analysis. There were no significant differences among treatments for ADG, ADFI, G:F, plasma urea nitrogen, alpha-acid glycoprotein, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, intestinal ammonia, pH, or VFA. However, the PC and DFM treatments showed decreased (P < 0.05) scours at 24 h postinfection compared with the NC, SDPP, and SDPP + DFM diets. Mortality in the NC treatment, which did not contain antibiotics, was greater (P < 0.05) than in the other treatments. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the 16S rDNA genes of digesta showed a greater incidence (P < 0.05) of Bacteroidetes in the PC and DFM diets than in the NC diet. When SDPP and DFM were included in the diet, the incidence of Bacteroidetes was also greater than in the NC diet (P < 0.05).

Effects of chop length (shorter = 10 mm or longer = 19 mm) of alfalfa silage and corn silage were determined in 16 midlactation Holstein cows using a 4 x 4 Latin square design with a 2 x 2 arrangement of treatments. Experimental periods were 21 d long and consisted of 14 d of adaptation and 7 d of sampling. Cows received total mixed ration containing (dry matter basis) 44.0% barley grain-based energy supplement, 12.6% protein supplement, and 21.7% longer chop or shorter chop alfalfa silage and 21.7% longer chop or shorter chop corn silage. Reducing the chop length of alfalfa silage and corn silage reduced the average geometric particle length from 14.4 to 11.0 mm and from 14.2 to 10.4 mm, respectively. Reducing the chop length of both silages reduced the proportion of the diets retained by the 8- and 19-mm screen of the Penn State Particle Separator from 55.0 to 46.0% of dry matter. Reducing the alfalfa chop length increased total rumen volatile fatty acids at 4 to 5 h after feeding but did not affect rumen pH at 4 to 5 h after feeding, feed intake, and milk production. Reducing the corn silage chop length increased dry matter intake from 22.3 to 23.2 kg/d, increased rumen pH at 4 to 5 h after feeding from 6.12 to 6.20, but did not alter rumen volatile fatty acids at 4 to 5 h after feeding or milk production. Daily milk yield, milk fat percentage, and milk protein percentage averaged 38.2 kg/d, 2.62%, and 3.29%, respectively, across all diets. The low milk fat percentages suggest that all diets induced subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA), whereas the rumen pH did not indicate SARA. This discrepancy could be due to a difference in the time of rumen pH measurement and the time of the lowest rumen pH. Hence, the pH data need to be interpreted with caution. Diets could have induced SARA, because for all experimental diets the content of forage neutral detergent fiber was lower than recommended for barley grain-based diets.
