BACKGROUND: Arnica montana and Bellis perennis are two medicinal plants that are thought to accelerate bone repair in homoeopathic literature. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells with the ability to differentiate and regenerate bone or osteogenesis. Hence, we aimed to determine the role of Arnica montana and Bellis perennis on the osteogenic differentiation of the C3H10T1/2 stem cell line. METHODS AND RESULTS: The cell proliferation of Arnica montana and Bellis perennis was evaluated by MTT assay. Osteogenic differentiation of C3H10T1/2 was induced by the addition of ß-glycerophosphate, ascorbic acid and dexamethasone in the differentiation medium over 3 weeks. Cells were treated with Arnica montana and Bellis perennis individually as well as in combination. The osteogenic differentiation potential of Arnica montana and Bellis perennis to differentiate C3H10T1/2 into osteoblasts was measured by alkaline phosphatase activity, alizarin red staining and the expression of Osteocalcin using immunostaining and qRT-PCR. Arnica montana and Bellis perennis could enhance C3H10T1/2 cell proliferation at 1600 µg. Further, the compound showed the ability to augment osteogenesis as confirmed by increased expression of alkaline phosphatase and enhanced calcium accumulation as seen by the Alizarin Red staining and quantification. Enhanced osteogenesis was further supported by the increased expression of osteocalcin in the treated cells with individual and combined doses of Arnica montana and Bellis perennis. Therefore, the findings provide additional support for the positive impact of Arnica montana and Bellis perennis on bone formation. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that homoeopathic compounds Arnica montana and Bellis perennis can augment osteogenesis individually as well as in combination.

Objectives: This study aimed to detect heterogeneous vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (hVISA) among methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolated from healthcare-associated infections and identify staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) types. Methods: This study was conducted from February 2019 to March 2020 and included patients admitted in 4 tertiary care hospitals in Karnataka, India. Isolation and identification of MRSA were done using standard bacteriological methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion; macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B phenotypes were identified using the D test. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of vancomycin was determined using agar dilution. hVISA were confirmed by the modified population analysis profile-area under the curve test. SCCmec types and the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (pvl) gene were detected using multiplex polymerase chain reaction. Results: Of 220 MRSA stains, 14 (6.4%) were hVISA. None of the MRSA isolates was vancomycin-intermediate or -resistant and all hVISA were susceptible to linezolid and teicoplanin. The macrolide-streptogramin B phenotype was present in 42.9% of hVISA; 92.9% of the hVISA strains had vancomycin MIC in the range of 1-2 µg/mL. Majority of the hVISA and vancomycin-susceptible MRSA were isolated from patients with skin and soft tissue infections. SCCmec III and IV were present in 50% and 35.7% of hVISA, respectively; 14.3% of the hVISA harboured SCCmec V. Conclusion: The prevalence rate of hVISA among MRSA was 6.4%. Therefore, MRSA strains should be tested for hVISA before starting vancomycin treatment. None of the isolates was vancomycin-intermediate or -resistant and all the hVISA strains were susceptible to linezolid and teicoplanin. The majority of the hVISA were isolated from patients with skin and soft tissue infections and harboured SCCmec III and IV.

In the present study, we present comparative outcomes of radical prostatectomy after whole-gland therapy (wg-SRARP) and focal gland therapy (f-SRARP). The study assessed 339 patients who underwent salvage robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (SRARP); 145 patients who had primary focal therapy and 194 patients who had primary whole-gland treatment. SRARP was performed in all cases using a standardized technique developed at respective institutes with the da Vinci Xi Surgical System. Our primary endpoint was the comparison of the functional and oncological outcomes between the groups. Cox proportional hazard was used to study the functional and oncological outcomes. The median total operative time for f-SRARP was 18 min higher than wg-RARP (p < 0.001). Higher rates of nerve-sparing were performed in f-SRARP (focal vs whole gland; bilateral-15.2% vs 9.3%; unilateral 49% vs 28.4%; p < 0.001). wg-SRARP had higher rates of ISUP 5 (26.3% vs 19.3%; p < 0.001) and deferred ISUP score due to altered pathology (14.8% vs 0.7; p < 0.001), while f-SRARP had higher rates of ISUP 4 (11.7% vs 10.7%; p < 0.001) and ≥ pT3a (64.8% vs 51.6%; p < 0.001). Positive margins were significantly higher with f-SRARP (26.2% vs 10.3%; p < 0.001). Functional outcomes were poor in both the groups. However, postoperative continence was higher and faster in patients who had f-SRARP compared to wg-SRARP (69% vs. 54.6%; p = 0.013). We could not identify statistically significant difference in postoperative potency recovery and biochemical recurrence. We present the largest multi-institutional analyses of f-SRARP and wg-SRARP. SRARP is challenging wherein patients have adverse pathological features and increased surgical complexity irrespective of the primary treatment. Focal therapy group had higher rates of nerve-sparing, however, with increased positive surgical margins. Both groups had poor functional outcomes regardless of nerve-sparing degree, indicating significant ipsilateral and contralateral damage to tissues surrounding the prostate during primary treatment. We believe that this analysis is crucial for counseling patients regarding expected outcomes before performing a salvage treatment following ablative therapy failure.

Small cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton), the queen of spices, is the third most expensive spice in the world after saffron and vanilla, valued highly for its aroma and taste. This perennial herbaceous plant is a native of coastal parts of Southern India and displays a significant amount of morphological diversity. Its genetic potential has not been exploited due to lack of genomic resources limiting our understanding of the genome and important metabolic pathways which give it the economic advantage in the spice industry. Here, we report upon the de novo assembled, draft whole genome sequence of cardamom variety, Njallani Green Gold. We used a hybrid assembly strategy using the reads from the Oxford Nanopore, Illumina and 10x Genomics GemCode sequencing chemistries. The assembled genome length was 1.06 Gb (gigabases) which is close to the estimated genome size of cardamom. More than 75% of the genome was captured in 8000 scaffolds with a N50 of 0.15 Mb. The genome appears to have a high repeat content and 68055 gene models were predicted. The genome is close to Musa species and displays an expansion and contraction in different gene families. The draft assembly was used for in silico mining of simple sequence repeats (SSRs). A total of 2,50,571 SSRs were identified of which 2,18,270 were perfect SSRs and 32,301 were compound SSRs. Among the perfect SSRs, trinucleotides were most abundant (1,25,329) and hexanucleotide repeats appear least (2,380). From the 2,50,571 SSRs mined, 2,27,808 primer pairs were designed based on flanking sequence information. Wet lab validation was performed for 246 SSR loci and based on their amplification profiles, 60 SSR markers were used for diversity analysis of a set of 60 diverse cardamom accessions. The average number of alleles detected per locus were 14.57 with a minimum of 4 and maximum of 30 alleles. Population structure analysis revealed the presence of high degree of admixtures which could primarily be due to cross-pollination prevalent in this species. The SSR markers identified would help in the development of gene or trait-linked markers which can be subsequently used for marker-assisted breeding for crop improvement in cardamom. The information on utilization of the SSR loci for generation of markers has been developed into a public database, 'cardamomSSRdb' that is freely available for use by the cardamom community.

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTI) are the most prevalent bacterial infection in humans. The uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) expresses a range of virulence factors that contribute to their pathogenicity . The emergence of multidrug resistance (MDR)-associated UTI is increasing. This study monitors the distribution of virulence factors among UPEC strains to note the antibiogram, outcome and type of associated UTI. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional time-bound study of six months was done on clinically significant urinary isolates of Escherichia coli. Detection of haemolysin production and serum resistance was done by phenotypic methods. Genotypic characterization of the virulence genes ( papC, iutA, hlyA, cnf1) was done by multiplex PCR. Demographic data, clinical history, antibiogram and type of UTI was collected from clinical case records. Results:75 E.coli isolates from patients with suspected UTIs were included. Females had a higher preponderance of UTI (66.7%). 93% of patients were adults and the remaining 7% were from paediatrics.  24 (32%) isolates showed haemolysis by plate haemolysis and all isolates were serum-resistant. Out of 75 isolates, 65 were positive for at least one of four targeted genes, while remaining ten isolates were negative for all four genes. Multidrug resistance was found in 40 (53.3%) isolates. 97.4% of the UTI cases had a favourable clinical outcome at discharge. Mortality due to urosepsis was 2.6%. Conclusion: Association of hemolysin production with resistance to imipenem and norfloxacin in UPEC strains was significant. Presence of hlyA gene is positively associated with ceftazidime resistance. Nitrofurantoin, piperacillin, tazobactam, and cefaperazone sulbactam are possible candidates for empirical therapy of UTIs. Drugs like aminoglycosides, carbapenems and fosfomycin may be used as reserve drugs in the treatment of MDR-UTI. However, inappropriate usage can increase antibiotic resistance. Hence proper selection of antibiotics in hospitals taking into account the local antibiogram is needed to reduce the emergence of antibiotic resistance.

In the present study, novel genomic-SSR (g-SSR) markers generated in our laboratory were used to characterize Tinospora cordifolia and related species. The g-SSR marker was also compared with EST-SSR and SCoT markers used earlier in our laboratory to assess the genetic diversity of T. cordifolia. A total of 26 accessions of T. cordifolia and 1 accession each of Tinospora rumphii and Tinospora sinensis were characterized using 65 novel g-SSR markers. A total of 125 alleles were detected with 49 polymorphic g-SSR markers. The number of alleles per locus varied from 1-4 with a mean value of 2.55 alleles per locus. Mean PIC, gene diversity, and heterozygosity were estimated to be 0.33, 0.41, and 0.65, respectively. The two species, namely T. rumphii and T. sinensis, showed cross-species transferability of g-SSRs developed in T. cordifolia. The success rate of cross-species transferability in T. rumphii was 95.3% and 93.8% in T. sinensis, proving the usefulness of this marker in genetic diversity studies of related species. The Tinospora accessions were also used for molecular characterization using SCoT and EST-SSR markers and compared for genetic diversity and cross-species transferability. The PIC, gene diversity, heterozygosity, and principal coordinate analysis showed that g-SSR is the better maker for a genetic diversity study of T. cordifolia. Additionally, high cross-species transferability of g-SSRs was found (95.3% and 93.8%) compared to EST-SSRs (68.8% and 67.7%) in T. rumphii and T. sinensis, respectively.

Introduction: SARS CoV-2, a novel corona virus, has emerged in December 2019. The COVID-19 associated mortality is documented in elderly with co morbidities. To have better insight on this issue, the secondary bacterial infections with multi-drug-resistant bacteria in COVID-19 patients need to be studied to evaluate the impact of these infections on the outcome. Aim and objectives: To determine the proportion of secondary infections in COVID-19 patients. To study the spectrum of pathogens and antibiogram of the bacteria isolated from secondary infections in such patients. To evaluate the co-existing co-morbidities, treatment and outcome in these patients. Methodology: The retrospective study was conducted in Departments of Medicine and Microbiology, KMC hospitals Attavara and Ambedkar circle, Mangaluru, including all the hospitalized microbiologically confirmed cases of SARS CoV-2 infection. Details pertaining to the study population were collected using a structured proforma. Descriptive data were entered in the form of mean, median and proportions. The categorical values were analyzed using Chi square test. Values of p < 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. Results: Two hundred COVID-19 hospitalized patients were included.28 out of 200 patients (14%) studied developed secondary infections. The types of secondary infections were Respiratory infections (50%), blood stream infections (17%), UTI (14%), Rhinocerebral Zygomycosis (17%). The predominant organisms were Klebsiella pneumoniae (44%), Zygomycetes (17%). The rates of antibiotic resistance in Gram negative bacilli were 33% to Cefuroxime,25% to aminoglycosides and fluoroquinolones and 16% to carbapenems. The mortality of 42.8% was observed in patients with secondary infections. Conclusion: Close monitoring and follow up especially in high-risk group of severe COVID 19 patients is crucial for better management and outcome.

Background There is paucity of real-world data on COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness from cohort designs. Variable vaccine performance has been observed in test-negative case-control designs. There is also scarce real-world data of health issues in individuals receiving vaccines after prior COVID-19, and of adverse events of significant concern (AESCs) in the vaccinated. Methods: A cohort study was conducted from July 2021 to December 2021 in a tertiary hospital of North India. The primary outcome was vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 during the second wave in India. Secondary outcomes were AESCs, and persistent health issues in those receiving COVID-19 vaccines. Regression analyses were performed to determine risk factors of COVID-19 outcomes and persistent health issues. Results: Of the 2760 health care workers included, 2544 had received COVID-19 vaccines, with COVISHIELD (rChAdOx1-nCoV-19 vaccine) received by 2476 (97.3%) and COVAXIN (inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine) by 64 (2.5%). A total of 2691 HCWs were included in the vaccine effectiveness analysis, and 973 COVID-19 events were reported during the period of analysis. Maximum effectiveness of two doses of vaccine in preventing COVID-19 occurrence was 17% across three different strategies of analysis adopted for robustness of data. One-dose recipients were at 1.27-times increased risk of COVID-19. Prior SARS-CoV-2 infection was a strong independent protective factor against COVID-19 (aOR 0.66). Full vaccination reduced moderate-severe COVID-19 by 57%. Those with lung disease were at 2.54-times increased risk of moderate-severe COVID-19, independent of vaccination status. AESCs were observed in 33/2544 (1.3%) vaccinees, including one case each of myocarditis and severe hypersensitivity. Individuals with hypothyroidism were at 5-times higher risk and those receiving a vaccine after recovery from COVID-19 were at 3-times higher risk of persistent health issues. Conclusions: COVID-19 vaccination reduced COVID-19 severity but offered marginal protection against occurrence. The possible relationship of asthma and hypothyroidism with COVID-19 outcomes necessitates focused research. With independent protection of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and high-risk of persistent health issues in individuals receiving vaccine after recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection, the recommendation of vaccinating those with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection needs reconsideration.

Fungal infections of the spine are a rare occurrence. We report three cases of Spondylodiscitis due to Aspergillus fumigatus, Candida albicans and Scedosporium apiospermum. Case 1:37 year old male, with history of COVID-19 infection one month prior presented with L1-2 Spondylodiscitis. Tissue showed growth of Aspergillus fumigatus. Case 2:75 year old male was admitted with swelling over low back. Pus aspirated from the swelling and tissue sent from operated site showed growth of Candida albicans. Case 3:56 year old known diabetic and end stage renal disease on hemodialysis presented with mid back pain since 2 months. Culture showed growth of Scedosporium apiospermum.

The Heat Shock Factor (Hsf) genes are widely distributed across the plant kingdom regulating the plant response to various abiotic stresses. In addition to natural selection, breeding and accelerated selection changed the structure and function of Hsf genes. 1076 Hsf genes from 30 genera from primitive algae to the most advanced plant species and major crop plants were used for phylogenetic analysis. The interspecific divergence was studied with 11 members of genus Oryza while intraspecific divergence was studied with sesame pan-genome adapted to diverse ecological niches. B2 genes in eudicots and monocots originated separately while A1 gave rise to the recently evolved Class-C genes and land colonization happened with evolution of A1 genes. An increase in the number of lineages in the Oryza clade with the evolution of AA genome indicated independent domestication and positive selection was observed in > 53% of loci whereas the highly conserved homologues were under purifying selection. The paralogous genes under positive selection exhibited more domain changes for diversified function and increased fitness. A significant co-evolving cluster involving amino acids Phenylalanine, Lysine and Valine played crucial role in maintaining hydrophobic core along with highly conserved Tryptophan residues. A mutation of Glutamic acid to Glutamine was observed in A8 genes of Lamiales affecting protein solvency. Breeding resulted in accumulation of mutations reducing the hydrophobicity of proteins and a further reduction in protein aggregation. This study identify genome duplications, non-neutral selection and co-evolving residues as causing drastic changes in the conserved domain of Hsf proteins. Corticosteroids and l -asparaginase used in the treatment of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) can cause drug-induced diabetes mellitus (DIDM). DIDM can lead to dyselectrolytemia, a higher risk of infections including cellulitis, bacteremia, fungemia, and a higher incidence of febrile neutropenia and may have an impact on the outcome of ALL. Literature on the management of DIDM among children with ALL is sparse and the diagnostic criteria for pediatric diabetes should be carefully applied considering the acute and transient nature of DIDM during ALL therapy. Insulin remains the standard of care for DIDM management and the choice of Insulin regimen (stand-alone Neutral Protamine Hagedorn or basal bolus) should be based on the type and dose of steroids used for ALL and the pattern of hyperglycemia. A modest glycemic control (postmeal 140 to 180 mg/dL, premeal <140 mg/dL) to prevent complications of hyperglycemia, as well as hypoglycemia, would be the general approach. This review is intended to suggest evidence-based practical guidance in the diagnosis and management of DIDM during pediatric ALL therapy.

Background Orthodontic tooth movement relies on sliding mechanics usually achieved by sliding the archwire through brackets. Sliding causes friction which is a force resisting the relative motion of two contacting objects. Frictional resistance is undesirable in orthodontic tooth movement because the archwire might bind with the bracket and prevent tooth movement. In addition, friction causes bending of the archwire leading to unwanted tooth movement or space loss through anchorage interference, prolonging the treatment time and root resorption. This study was performed to compare the frictional resistance produced by different types of ceramic brackets and stainless steel brackets with Teflon-coated stainless steel and stainless steel archwires. The surface texture of the wire before and after friction test was also evaluated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Methodology A total of 48 samples were tested. In total, 12 premolar brackets each of stainless steel (Ortho technology, Carlsbad, CA, USA), monocrystalline ceramic (Ortho technology, Carlsbad, CA, USA), polycrystalline ceramic (Ortho technology, Carlsbad, CA, USA), and ceramic bracket with a metal slot (Ortho technology, Carlsbad, CA, USA) having an 0.022-inch slot were coupled with 0.019 × 0.025-inch stainless steel and Teflon-coated stainless steel wires. Each bracket-wire assembly was vertically mounted and clamped to the jaws of the universal testing machine. The wire was pulled across the bracket with a cross head speed of 10 mm per minute. The readings obtained were recorded. To evaluate the surface roughness, wires were examined using an SEM (in four magnifications 250×, 500×, 1,000×, and 5,000×) before and after testing. Results Under the testing conditions, the stainless steel bracket-stainless steel wire combination produced the least frictional resistance, and the polycrystalline ceramic bracket-stainless steel wire combination produced the highest frictional resistance. Ceramic brackets with a metal slot generated lesser friction than other types of ceramic brackets but more friction than stainless steel brackets. Moreover, for all bracket-archwire combinations, Teflon-coated wires generated reduced frictional resistance compared to stainless steel wires. The surface examination of Teflon-coated stainless steel wire and conventional uncoated stainless steel wire revealed that Teflon-coated wire had a smoother surface compared to uncoated stainless steel wire. Conclusions Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that the stainless steel bracket produced the lowest frictional resistance and the polycrystalline ceramic bracket produced the highest frictional resistance. Ceramic brackets with a metal slot showed a coefficient of friction that was more than but comparable to that of stainless steel brackets. Monocrystalline ceramic brackets generated lesser friction compared to polycrystalline ceramic brackets. Further, Teflon coating of stainless steel archwires can reduce frictional resistance compared to conventional uncoated stainless steel archwires. The surface of Teflon-coated stainless steel wires was found to be smoother than uncoated stainless steel wires.

Introduction Newer adhesive systems are available eliminating the separate priming step during the bonding procedure thereby reducing the chances of introduction of error during bonding. The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of a primer-incorporated adhesive with that of a self-etching primer system and conventional bonding system. Materials and method Sixty-six extracted human premolars were cleaned, mounted, and randomly divided into three groups. In group A (control), 22 teeth were bonded with stainless steel orthodontic brackets using the conventional bonding system; in group B, 22 teeth were bonded using a self-etching primer system (Transbond Plus SEP, 3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA) and in group C, 22 teeth were bonded using the new primer-incorporated adhesive system (GC Ortho Connect, GC Orthodontics, Breckerfeld, Germany). After bonding, the teeth were stored in artificial saliva at 37ºC for 24 hours and debonded with a universal testing machine. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) was also evaluated. Statistical analysis was done using one-way ANOVA to compare the shear bond strength values among the three groups and Kruskal Wallis test was used for comparison of ARI scores. Results The SBS values in group A (11.60 ± 2.95 MPa), group B (9.44 ± 4.46 MPa) and group C (12.68 ± 6.25 MPa) were found to be comparable with no statistically significant difference. The ARI scores were also similar among the tested groups with the predominant site of bond failure being the bracket-adhesive interface indicating a safe bond-failure site. Conclusion GC Ortho Connect was found have clinically acceptable shear bond strength values that are comparable with that of self-etching primer and conventional bonding system. Therefore, it can be used effectively for saving the clinician's chairside time by reduction in the number of steps during bonding without compromising on the bond strength.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy, characterized by structural optic nerve damage with corresponding field defects. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common. Although perimetry is the gold standard, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) has proved reliable in the detection of pre-perimetric glaucoma. There is preferential involvement of various sectors of the peripapillary RNFL in the different stages of POAG. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to assess RNFL thickness and determine preferential involvement of different sectors of peripapillary RNFL in the various stages of POAG using SD-OCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-nine patients with POAG underwent complete ophthalmic examination including visual field testing and RNFL thickness measurement. Perimetric findings were used to categorize them into mild, moderate, and severe stages of glaucoma. The RNFL thickness values were analyzed and compared with perimetric results. RESULTS: The average RNFL loss in mild, moderate, and severe POAG was 25.44%, 29.67%, and 44.15%, respectively. A statistically significant correlation (P < 0.05) between RNFL loss and severity of glaucoma was found in all except the superior and temporal sectors. A statistically significant (P < 0.05) negative correlation was noted between visual field index and RNFL loss in all sectors except the nasal-superior in moderate POAG and all sectors in severe POAG. Mean deviation and RNFL loss showed a significant positive correlation in temporal-inferior (TI) sector in mild POAG and all sectors in the severe group. CONCLUSION: RNFL thickness decreases with increase in glaucoma severity and is a reliable parameter to differentiate mild from severe POAG. The TI followed by nasal-inferior RNFL sector is the most sensitive to glaucomatous damage in all three stages.

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are the outstanding innovations in materials science and engineering in the early 21st century. HEAs consist of multiple elements with equiatomic or near equiatomic compositions, which exhibit superior mechanical properties, such as wear resistance, fatigue resistance, and corrosion resistance. HEAs are primarily used in structural and functional applications; hence, appropriate welding processes are essential to enhancing the performances and service lives of HEA components. Herein, a comprehensive overview of current state-of-art-of welding techniques for HEAs is elucidated. More specifically, the article discusses the fusion-based welding techniques, such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and laser beam welding (LBW), and solid-state welding techniques, such as friction stir welding (FSW) and explosive welding (EB), for a broad category of HEAs. In addition, the microstructural features and mechanical properties of HEAs welded using different techniques were explained for a broad spectrum of HEAs. Finally, this review discusses potential challenges in the welding of HEAs.

BackgroundThere is paucity of real-world data on COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness and safety from cohort designs. The current study aimed to evaluate vaccine performance during second wave in India. It also aimed to determine adverse events of significant concern (AESCs), and to ascertain the effect of vaccination on persistent health issues in individuals post COVID-19. MethodsA cohort study was conducted from July-2021 to December-2021 in a tertiary hospital of north India. The primary outcome was vaccine-effectiveness against COVID-19. Secondary outcomes were AESCs, and persistent health issues in those receiving vaccine. Regression analyses were performed to determine risk factors. ResultsIn 2760 healthcare workers (HCWs) included, 1033 COVID-19 events were reported. Around 6-17% vaccine effectiveness was observed against COVID-19 occurrence. One dose-recipients were at 1.6-times increased risk of COVID-19. Prior SARS-CoV-2 infection was a strong independent protective factor against COVID-19 (aOR 0.66). Full vaccination reduced moderate-severe COVID-19 by 57%. Those with lung disease were at 2.5-times increased risk of moderate-severe COVID-19. AESCs were observed in 1.3% including one case each of myocarditis and severe hypersensitivity. Individuals with hypothyroidism were at 5-times and those receiving vaccine after recovery from COVID-19 were at 3-times higher risk of persistent health issues. ConclusionCOVID-19 vaccination reduced COVID-19 severity but offered marginal protection against occurrence. Relationship of asthma and hypothyroidism with COVID-19 outcomes necessitates focused research. Independent protection of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection was high and persistent health issues were common in individuals receiving vaccine post COVID-19. Recommendations of vaccinating those recovered from COVID-19 need further studies.

Data on the microbial composition among tobacco chewers and oral cancer patients in Rajasthan, India is of interest. NGS analysis from tobacco chewers and oral cancer comprised the most abundant and core microbial taxa in the oral cavity. It shows that highly pathogenic phylum consisting of 6% Fusobacteria and 9% Firmicutes are observed in oral cancer samples; whereas, 0.6% Treponema, 34% Firmicutes, 0.02% Mollicutes, and 4% Fusobacteria are seen in tobacco chewers. Thus, data shows that the most abundant and core microbial taxa are found in the oral cavity of tobacco chewers and oral cancer patients in Rajasthan, India.
