RESUMO

Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen that is responsible for nosocomial infections. Imipenem and colistin are drugs that are commonly used to treat severe infections caused by A. baumannii, such as sepsis, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and bacteremia. However, some strains of A. baumannii have become resistant to these drugs, which is a concern for public health. Biofilms produced by A. baumannii increase their resistance to antibiotics and the cells within the inner layers of biofilm are exposed to sub-inhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) of antibiotics. There is limited information available regarding how the genes of A. baumannii are linked to biofilm formation when the bacteria are exposed to sub-MICs of imipenem and colistin. Thus, this study's objective was to explore this relationship by examining the genes involved in biofilm formation in A. baumannii when exposed to low levels of imipenem and colistin. The study found that exposing an isolate of A. baumannii to low levels of these drugs caused changes in their drug susceptibility pattern. The relative gene expression profiles of the biofilm-associated genes exhibited a change in their expression profile during short-term and long-term exposure. This study highlights the potential consequences of overuse and misuse of antibiotics, which can help bacteria become resistant to these drugs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dengue is a major health burden worldwide, notably in tropical and subtropical countries, with symptoms ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe hemorrhagic or shock syndrome. The clinical and biochemical profile of dengue has been shown in the literature to be expanding as more atypical signs have been added over the past few decades. Most dengue-related symptoms are typically mild to moderate and self-limited. However, intracranial hemorrhage and acute respiratory distress syndrome in severe dengue is an event that has been encountered uncommonly. CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old female presented with complaints of fever, headache, cough, and altered sensorium. Later, she was diagnosed with severe dengue fever complicated by dengue hemorrhagic fever, which manifested as subarachnoid and subdural bleeding and acute respiratory distress syndrome. She was managed conservatively with a positive outcome. CONCLUSION: Atypical manifestation, though rare, should be kept in mind while dealing with severe dengue patients, as early detection based on anticipated risk factors and timely treatment have the potential to save lives.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tabernaemontana alternifolia root is traditionally used and practiced among few Indian tribes as an antidote for snakebites. OBJECTIVE: To combat and neutralize Naja naja venom using methanolic root extract of Tabernaemontana alternifolia and to explore its efficacy on venom biomarkers in search of newer herbal antidote or first-aid-point of care for therapeutics.Materialization.Pharmacological activities such as fibrinogenolytic, direct and indirect hemolytic activities for the neutralization of the venom were evaluated. Lethal toxicity annulation studies were performed using the murine model by pre-incubation and post-treatment protocols. Further, the neutralization of edema and myotoxicity were also evaluated. RESULTS: Electrophoretic analysis revealed that the complete neutralization of fibrinogen degradation was observed at 1:10 (w/w) (venom to extract). T. alternifolia exhibited an effective dose (ED50) value of 87.20 µg/mL for venom-induced hemolysis. Venom at 2 µg concentration produced 11 mm of hemolytic radiance and was neutralized at 1:20 (w/w) venom to extract concentration. The survival time and the neurotoxic symptoms in mice were concluded to be delayed by both the methods of lethal toxicity inhibition using methanol extract. The edema ratio reduced the venom to extract ratio of 1:20 (w/w) from 173 ± 45% to 133.61% when subjected to 5 µg of venom concentration. The plant extract significantly neutralized the myotoxic activity. CONCLUSION: T. alternifolia methanolic root extract could be a potent contributor in the effective treatment of N. naja venom-induced toxicity.

RESUMO

This paper presents the results of the treatment of textile dye wastewater generated from a textile processing industry by electrochemical method. Experiments were conducted at current densities of 12, 24 and 48 A/m2 using mild steel as anode and cathode. During the various stages of electrolysis, parameters such as COD, color and BOD5 were determined in order to know the feasibility of electrochemical treatment. It was observed that increasing the electrolysis time and increased current density bring down the concentration of pollutants. Also COD removal rate and energy consumption during the electrolysis were calculated and presented in this paper. The present study proves the effectiveness of electrochemical treatment using MS as anode for TDW oxidation.
