RESUMO

Prostate cancer continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in men around the world. The data concerning the antioxidant status and the degree of lipid peroxidation at the moment of the initiation of cancer is limited. The aim of this research is to assess the effect of selected minerals (zinc, selenium, iron, copper and calcium) on the growth of the neoplastic process and the concentrations of selected biomarkers of the oxidative damage in rats with implanted prostate cancer cells. It was found that the diet supplementation with selected minerals (zinc, selenium, iron, copper and calcium) affect the occurrence of prostate tumor growth in the examined rats. The intraperitoneal implantation of prostate cancer cells resulted in the occurrence of prostatic adenoma in 71% of the examined rats. In the rats that were additionally supplemented with selenium and with copper, the cancer cell aggregates constituted, respectively, 25% and 38% of the cases. As a result of implantation of cancer cells, the level of biomarkers of lipid peroxidation increased both in the urine and in tissues of the examined animals (rat group without supplementation). No relationship was found between the process of lipid peroxidation due to the supplementation with selenium and copper, and the lower incidence of cancer and the induction of apoptosis. The reduced activity of antioxidative enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) creates favorable conditions for the formation of cancer cell aggregates, which was shown in the rats whose diet was supplemented with iron. In summary, we conclude that lipid peroxidation represents a fruitful approach to early stage cancer prevention. Supplementation of rats with trace elements correlated with the risk of developing cancer, but the mechanisms of this action is complicated and dose-dependent.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of zinc and copper, separately or in combination with resveratrol, on the concentration of 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE) in urine of rats with mammary cancer (adenocarcinoma) induced with 7,12- dimethyl-1,2-benz[a]anthracene (+ DMBA). The research focused on the kinetics of alterations in urinary 15-HETE at the early stage of carcinogenesis, as well as on the influence of dietary factors on the process. The content of 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid in the rats' urine was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The 15-HETE level was standardized by conversion to the creatinine level. Regardless of the diet (standard, Zn, Zn+resveratrol, Cu, Cu+resveratrol), DMBA-induced breast carcinogenesis was not inhibited. On the contrary, in the Zn+resveratrol supplemented group, tumorigenesis developed at a considerably faster rate. It was found that the supplementation of the rats' diet with zinc only or zinc plus resveratrol resulted in a reduction of the 15-HETE level in urine of rats with mammry cancer (+ DMBA) as compared with control rats (- DMBA). A statistically lower concentration of 15-HETE was found in urine of rats supplemented with zinc or copper with resveratrol when compared with the animals that received only zinc or copper (p=0.02; p=0.0001). Summing up the obtained results, it can be concluded that the level of 15-HETE in urine of the examined animals depended on the applied supplementation.

RESUMO

Wisent, or European bison (Bison bonasus), is listed as "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and is therefore protected by international law. For the first time, a Wisent embryo has been obtained in vitro. This procedure creates a new opportunity to protect and increase Wisent reproductive potential and thereby opens new possibilities for the establishment of a controlled and broad reserve of the gene pool.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of histopathological lesions in the different organs in relation to the commercial-type and the age of birds (i.e. broiler chickens and layers). During the period 1999-2010 a total of 189 cases was submitted to the Division of Animal Pathomorphology, Department of Pathology and Veterinary Diagnostics at WULS. Most cases were found in broiler chickens (66.7%). The majority of the histopathological lesions were detected in the liver and lymphoid organs. In of 29% cases of hepatic injury pathognomonic lesions associated with inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) were found. The mean age of birds was 23 days. Among IBH cases proventriculitis (58%) was more often found than gizzard lesions (25.8%). Interestingly, we noted some intranuclear inclusions in the epithelial cells within the proventriculus. A low percentage of histopathological evidence of infectious bursal disease (IBD) was reported in chickens. The gastrointestinal tract was the second most frequent predilection site for histopathological lesions. Histopathological findings within the heart and lungs were less common and were more often seen in the upper respiratory tract. Cases of infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) were registered in broiler chickens (3.2%, mean age 37 days) and in layers (4.8%; mean age 196 days). Lesions associated with Marek's disease, avian leukosis and fowl pox were recognized only in layers, respectively in 3.2% (mean age 176 days), 1.6% (mean age 205 days) and 1.1% (mean age 196 days) of all cases. Avian encephalomyelitis (AE) was noted only in 0.5% of all cases.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify physical activity patterns and determinants of physical inactivity in a representative sample of Polish adults. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional analysis of 14 769 randomly selected individuals (52.7% women and 47.3% men) aged 20-74 years participating in the National Polish Health Survey, WOBASZ (2002-2005). METHODS: Sociodemographic and lifestyle details were collected. Assessment of physical activity was based on selected questions from the CINDI Health Monitor Questionnaire. RESULTS: Approximately 35% of Polish adults are not physically active in leisure time, whilst 39.5% declare sufficient level of leisure-time physical activity. Leisure-time inactivity is significantly less likely in persons aged <35 years, those with university education and those living in rural areas. Almost 48% of men and 28.4% of women employed full- or part-time report highly active work, whilst sedentary work is reported by 42.7% of women and 30.2% of men. Low occupational activity is more prevalent in young adults, persons with university education and those living in large urban areas. Nearly 67% of the entire working population report no active commuting. CONCLUSIONS: There is a need to promote various forms of physical activity, with special attention on active commuting and leisure-time activities across both genders and all age groups. Public health policies and programmes should focus on substantial differences between various sociodemographic groups.

RESUMO

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare illness in adults with gas filled blebs found in the submucosa or subserosa of the bowel wall. The main localization is the terminal ileum although all parts of the intestine can be affected. Clinical symptoms can vary from aqueous-slimy, bloody diarrhea to constipation and/or vague abdominal pain. Patients can also be completely asymptomatic. In symptomatic patients the therapy of PI is based on the assumed pathogenesis, so that a combined treatment of metronidazole 1500 mg daily during a period of 6-8 weeks additionally and oxygen application (PaO2 of 200-350 mmHg) for 7 days is suggested. In addition, elemental diets are recommended. Complications are indicated in the literature with 3%. In particular mechanical ileus, invagination and perforation as well as substantial intestinal bleeding up to the volvolus lead to further diagnostic and therapeutic steps. A surgical intervention is reserved for rare cases.

RESUMO

Ninety-seven bison (39 males and 58 females) were culled out during three successive winter seasons. No infection with BHV-1 and BHV-5 or other viruses was detected by PCR and SN methods. Advanced pathological lesions observed in males exhibiting symptoms of posthitis/balanoposthitis are probably due to secondary infection by microorganisms present in the prepuce (Corynebacterium spp., Bacillus spp., Fusobacterium necrophorum, Staphylococcus spp. (coagulase negative) and Staphylococcus hyicus). Histopathological examinations of sections from prepuce and lips of pudendum showed the presence of Onchocercinae nematode (Onchocerca sp.). A comparison of biochemical and morphological blood parameters in the bison with or without lesions in the digestive (presence of parasites), respiratory, urinary and reproductive tracts revealed that the most variable parameter during reproductive organ disorder is the leukocyte count, while disorders in the urinary and digestive tracts coincided with the age of animals. In cases of digestive disorder most changes were observed in the number of neutrophils and concentration of urea. The number of red blood cells, monocytes, the level of alkaline phosphatase (AP) and hematocrit negatively correlated with age. Negative correlation was also observed between the number of neutrophils, level of creatinine and lymphocyte proliferation index. However, positive correlation was seen between erythrocyte sedimentation rate (Spearman's correlation coefficient), level of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and protein, and age of the bison. Positive correlation was also observed between the lymphocyte count and lymphocyte proliferation index. The attempt to determine the reference values for blood biochemical and morphological parameters showed similarities to those of cattle.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence and localization of different tumors in the urogenital system in dogs and cats in relation to sex, age and breed of animals. The study was performed on tumors or tissue specimens from tumors of the urinary and genital system obtained during surgery from dogs and cats submitted to the Division of Pathological Anatomy, Department of Clinical Sciences Agricultural University of Warsaw from 1998 to 2005. Most tumors of the urogenital system recognized in the present study derived from dogs (94.20%, 130 cases), and only a few cases were obtained from cats (5.79%). Occurrence and localization of urogenital system tumors in present review is similar to findings reported by other authors. Testicular tumors in males, ovarian lesions in females and urinary bladder tumors in both sexes were most commonly recognized. Older dogs were most often affected, animals with nonmalignant tumors were a bit younger than those with malignant lesions. Any obvious breed predilections were found, but terriers were at increased risk for development of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder and mixed breed and German shepherd for development of testicular neoplasms.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effect of education, income, food habits and control over life on risk factors for cardiovascular diseases in Poland, a former communist country with ongoing transformations of the political and economic system, where cardiovascular disease is an important health problem. METHODS: The data were collected by questionnaire, as part of the CINDI Programme, from 2001 to 2002 in Lodz, an industrial city in Poland. The surveys were directed at random samples of 2000 men and 2000 women; 1847 participants aged 18-64 years responded. As detailed in the ATP III report, participants with three or more of abdominal obesity, hypertriglyceridaemia, low high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol, high blood pressure or high fasting glucose were defined as having the metabolic syndrome. RESULTS: We have found that education is more strongly associated with the metabolic syndrome. Our study suggests that higher education may be a strong and consistent predictor of good health. Also, low control over life (unfulfilled daily needs, unfulfilling work, little or no reward for effort at work) and lack of physical activity have been shown to be predictors for the metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that interventions to improve the health of the Polish population need to be specific for the social environment.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to assess quality of life (QL) of residents of Polish urban area and analyze the influence of selected sociodemographic and clinical variables on their QL. The study revealed a very high level of reported problems, especially regarding pain and anxiety. The mean subjective assessment of health state was poor in comparison with results obtained in other (usually western) countries. Presence of major risk factors of cardiovascular diseases had an important impact on QL. Elevated blood pressure and unsatisfactory level of physical activity were the strongest factors deteriorating QL in the studied population. There is a need for implementing effective interventions in the society, especially in the area of prevention and management of hypertension and sedentary lifestyle.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was the evaluation of the occurrence of Helicobacter-like organisms in the gastric mucosa of dogs. The study was performed on samples of gastric mucosa obtained during necropsies from 94 dogs euthanasized for various reasons. Histopathological examination and also urease test was performed. Helicobacter sp. was found in 85.10% of examined dogs. In 36% cases the presence of bacteria was accompanied by chronic inflammation of gastric mucosa localized mainly in pyloric region. In 97.59% samples positive results of urease test were associated with histopathological confirmation of gastric Helicobacter-like organisms.

RESUMO

The bison population in the Bialowieza Forest in Poland has now grown to approximately 300, while the herds in the Belarusian part of the forest total about 240 bison. The first signs of a health problem in these herds appeared in 1980, when two cases of balanoposthitis were detected in two bulls (2 and 5 years of age). Since 1980 research has been conducted to explain the cause of diseases, particularly balanoposthitis, and to monitor the health of bison in Bialowieza Forest. A total number of 614 bison (294 male and 320 female) of different ages was eliminated between 1980 and 2000. Not all the culled bison were examined (postmortem analysis, histopathological, bacteriological, virological and toxicological examinations, serological tests, molecular research). Based on the increase in numbers, reproduction in this population for the past 21 years is generally considered successful. Among 182 male bison eliminated during 1990-2000, only 85, or 47%, of the animals had balanoposthitis. Thus, the percentage of balanoposthitis cases went from 100% during the 1980s down to 47% in the past decade. It appears that the culling process has been a major factor leading to this decrease. It can be assumed that a set of factors is involved in the appearance of the disease (Corynebacterium spp., Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Ureoplasma spp, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Streptoccocus spp., Staphyloccocus spp.) while opportunistic infections including nematodes (Onchocerca spp.) are responsible for the occurrence of secondary lesions.

RESUMO

The effects of feeding varied levels of low- and high-gramine yellow lupin seeds (LG and HG, respectively), and of synthetic gramine added to the diets in amounts ranging from 0.15 to 1.2 g per kg were investigated in one experiment on growing chicken and in two experiments on growing rats. The comparison of LG and HG lupin and the effect of 0.5 g gramine per kg of LG diet were determined in a growth-balance experiment with pigs. Organ weights and histology, blood parameters and activity of liver enzymes were determined. The response to HG lupin and gramine concentration varied among the species, the rats being more affected than chicken; no adverse effects of HG lupin or gramine were found in growing pigs. The common reaction of rats and chicken to the high levels of gramine (native or synthetic) was the decrease of feed intake and body gain. The increase of the relative weight of liver or kidney, changes in hematological parameters and liver enzymes were found only in rats. The estimated NOAEL (no-observed-adverse-effect level) of gramine was about 0.3 g/kg diet for rats, 0.65 g for chicken and at least 0.5 g for growing pigs.

RESUMO

Sixty-four Wistar rats were divided into 8 equal groups and kept for 36 days in individual boxes. Three of the groups were given full synthetic diets containing various animal fats: beef tallow, pork fat or fish oil. A control group was fed the diets without the fat. The other four groups were fed the same diets with lecithin supplementation. At the end of experiment, sections taken from the liver were stained with haematoxylin eosin and Sudan III to indicate fat infiltration. Liver enzyme levels, total bilirubin, albumin and two products of lipid metabolism were measured in serum from all the animals. The addition of lecithin to the diets did not influence the level of enzymes in the serum except in rats fed the diet containing beef tallow. A relationship between the type of diet, lecithin supplementation and the total cholesterol concentration in serum was observed. The concentration of HDL-cholesterol was only influenced by lecithin supplementation and that of triglycerides by the type of fat in the diet. The addition of lecithin to the diet was associated with proliferation of Kupffer cells, and an increased number of binuclear cells. Fatty degeneration of hepatocytes was less pronounced in all groups following lecithin supplementation. Lecithin supplementation of the diet did not elicit any pathological lesions and may be considered as a hepatocyte protector. This favourable effect of lecithin was most marked in the group of rats fed the fish oil.

RESUMO

The research aimed at defining local changes in the healthy prostatic gland after the procedure of cryodestruction. In 15 dogs the gland was frozen unifocally in the double cycle from the outside using the flat applicator. At different times over the period of 6 months after the cryodestruction procedure particular dogs were subjected to surgery in order to determine macro- and microscopic changes. Coagulative necrosis with the subsequent formation of the connective tissue scar was observed in the frozen tissues. Two weeks after the cryosurgery regenerative processes of the normal prostatic gland were noted. From the tenth day until 6 months after the procedure the size of the gland in the investigated dogs decreased by about 45%. The appearance of cavities in the lobes of the gland may, be a complication after the overfreezing of the urethra.

RESUMO

Theophylline-sensitive, theophylline-resistant and theophylline-dependent populations of peripheral blood lymphocytes in pregnant sows were defined. Theophylline-sensitive lymphocytes were cautiously considered as helper and theophylline-resistant lymphocytes seemed to represent the population of suppressor cells. During the first two months of pregnancy the number of helpers increased, while decrease of suppressor cells during the second and third month of gestation was observed. Increase of population of helper T-cells was accompanied by increase of absolute number of B-lymphocytes. Rapid decrease of B-cells after farrowing accompanied the decline of suppressor population. The changes in percentage and in absolute number of these populations of immune cells do not indicate the general immunosuppression during pregnancy in sows.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to examine subpopulations of peripheral blood lymphocytes of mastitic and normal sows. Since number of cells in the milk reflects the intensity of response to mastitis process, relationship between level of milk somatic cells and peripheral blood lymphocytes was determined. No differences were found between mastitic and healthy sows in the percentage and absolute number of blood neutrophils and lymphocytes, T- and B-lymphocytes as well as in subpopulations of T-lymphocytes. It was found that milk somatic cell count positively correlates with the percentage but not with number of neutrophils and lymphoblasts and negatively correlates with the number of blood total T-lymphocytes and helper T-cells.

RESUMO

In 1981, a new low-molecular-weight protease inhibitor, FUT-175 (nafamstat mesilate), was synthesized. Its preventive action against acute experimental pancreatitis (AEP) was detected. We studied the effect of FUT-175 on the blood count and aggregability of platelets in AEP in dogs. At 30 min after induction of AEP, the sensitivity to ADP increased more than two times in untreated animals. An evident decrease in platelet count of about 37% was noted in these dogs at 6 h after AEP induction. Treatment of AEP with FUT-175 prevented these changes. We assume that the positive effect of FUT-175 against AEP depends at least in part on its influence on platelet aggregation.
