RESUMO

Eggshell morphology is a valuable indicator of the local conditions within the nests of modern crocodilians and birds. In contrast to these latter, the anatomical structure of the eggshells of most crocodilian species is practically unknown. Here, we provide the first characterization of crocodilian eggshells, using x-ray micro-CT scans. We studied eggshells of Caiman latirostris and Caiman yacare from various developmental stages that coincide with the beginning of embryonic ossification. The new 3D renderings revealed complex ornamentation, unique among crocodilians, and amphora-shaped pore canals, some of which converge in single pore openings. We also documented a high density of pore canals with a gas diffusion capacity 45 times higher than the average predicted for modern avian eggshells. The external ornamentation and the thickness of the compact layer of the eggshells (i.e. excluding ornamentation) showed ontogenetic and interspecific differences that could be related to nesting materials and nesting areas selected by each species. The shell features described here evidence a greater structural complexity than previously recognized in phylogenetically close, sympatric crocodilian species. Further comprehensive morphological analyses on other modern and fossil crocodilian eggshells using micro-CT technology will shed new light on the evolution of reproductive strategies in this intriguing archosaur clade.

BACKGROUND: In health economic evaluation, utility associated with a health state is outcome-oriented and usually measured using the QALY methodology. Even though there is consistent evidence of utility not only being derived from outcomes but also from procedures, process utility has not been fully integrated in QALY calculations. The aim of this paper is twofold: first, to provide evidence of process utility associated with an alternative treatment to angioplasty, and second, to estimate a monetary value of such process utility using the willingness to pay (WTP) approach. METHODS: A total of 1514 people were polled on their WTP to avoid angioplasty to have a drug-eluting stent (DES) implanted. WTP is estimated with a contingent valuation (CV) survey. Individuals are also asked if they would be WTP for a non-invasive procedure with similar results being achieved. WTP responses were analyzed using a double bounded (DB) logit model. RESULTS: Most of the participants showed positive preferences for avoiding angioplasty, with an estimated mean WTP of €5692.87. Using QALY gains for avoiding angioplasty, varying from 0.0035 to 0.08 QALYs, our WTP estimate imply monetary values per QALY that range from €71,160.87 to €1,626,534.28. DISCUSSION: A WTP of €5692.87 to avoid angioplasty imply a monetary value per QALY that greatly exceed the cost per QALY thresholds established in different countries to consider health programs as beneficial to society. Our results reflect how different methodologies for HTA may lead to different conclusions. From the ICER perspective, the cost that would make the treatment with pills option cost-effective, using a threshold of €40,000/QALY, would be €224. However, a cost-benefit approach could support health programs even with a higher cost. CONCLUSION: WTP methodology captures outcome and process factors related to angioplasty as our WTP estimations are non-significantly different for the costs of angioplasty. WTP approach must be considered as a genuine alternative to QALY approaches to value process utility.

The effect of NaNO3 and its physical state on the thermal decomposition pathways of hydrated magnesium hydroxycarbonate (hydromagnesite, HM) towards MgO was examined by in situ total scattering. Pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of these data allowed us to probe the structural evolution of pristine and NaNO3-promoted HM. A multivariate curve resolution alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) analysis identified the intermediate phases and their evolution upon the decomposition of both precursors to MgO. The total scattering results are discussed in relation with thermogravimetric measurements coupled with off-gas analysis. MgO is obtained from pristine HM (N2, 10 °C min-1) through an amorphous magnesium carbonate intermediate (AMC), formed after the partial removal of water of crystallization from HM. The decomposition continues via a gradual release of water (due to dehydration and dehydroxylation) and, in the last step, via decarbonation, leading to crystalline MgO. The presence of molten NaNO3 alters the decomposition pathways of HM, proceeding now through AMC and crystalline MgCO3. These results demonstrate that molten NaNO3 facilitates the release of water (from both water of crystallization and through dehydroxylation) and decarbonation, and promotes the crystallization of MgCO3 and MgO in comparison to pristine HM. MgO formed from the pristine HM precursor shows a smaller average crystallite size than NaNO3-promoted HM and preserves the initial nano-plate-like morphology of HM. NaNO3-promoted HM was decomposed to MgO that is characterized by a larger average crystallite size and irregular morphology. Additionally, in situ SEM allowed visualization of the morphological evolution of HM promoted with NaNO3 at a micrometre scale.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Liver fibrosis results from cycles of liver damage and scar formation. We herein aimed at analysing neural crest cells and/or bone marrow stromal cells contribution to the liver. METHODS: Two liver fibrosis and one hepatectomy model were applied on double-transgenic loxP-Cre mouse lines. RESULTS: Increased numbers of glia with more complex processes were found in fibrotic livers. During embryonic development, only few cells were traced in the liver and bone marrow, in a minor fraction of mice of different neural crest reporter strains analysed: therefore, a neural crest origin of such cells is doubtful. In the fibrotic liver, a significantly higher incidence of endothelial cells and hepatocyte-like cells expressing the reporter gene Tomato were found in Wnt1-Cre-Tom and GLAST-CreERT2-Tom mice. Consistently, during early fibrogenesis stromal Wnt1-traced cells, with progenitor (CFU-F) properties, get likely mobilized to peripheral blood. Circulating adult Wnt1-traced cells are stromal cells and lack from the expression of other bone marrow and endothelial progenitor cells markers. Furthermore, in a 70% hepatectomy model GLAST+ Wnt1-traced pericytes were found to be mobilized from the bone marrow and the incidence of GLAST-traced hepatocyte-like cells was increased. Finally, GLAST-traced hepatocyte like-cells were found to maintain the expression of stromal markers. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest a gliosis process during liver fibrogenesis. While neural crest cells probably do not contribute with other liver cell types than glia, GLAST+ Wnt1-traced bone marrow pericytes are likely a source of endothelial and hepatocyte-like cells after liver injury and do not contribute to scarring.

Little is known about the embryonic development and variation of the chondrocranium in Crocodylia and there are no works on any Caiman species. Due to the importance of cranial features in the systematics of this clade, investigating the development of the skull in embryonic stages is essential. In this study, we present for the first time the development of the cartilaginous skull of two extant Caiman species. Anatomical descriptions of the embryonic chondrocranium of Caiman latirostris and Caiman yacare were made, paying special attention to their inter- and intraspecific variation. For this purpose, pre-hatching ontogenetic cranial series of these two caiman species were prepared with a double staining and diaphanization technique. The main differences with other crocodylian species were observed in the palatoquadrate, and interspecific variation within the genus was recorded in the hyobranchial apparatus and larynx. Some characters may be distinctive of Caiman (posterior and ventral surface of the otic process of the palatoquadrate articulated with the dorsal process of the columella auris, and otic process articulated with the lateral wall of the auditory capsule), Alligatoridae (presence of an epiphanial foramen) or C. latirostris and C. yacare (Corpus hyoidei with different number and position of foramina and different shapes of its anterior contour and anterior and posterior notch, different degrees of broadening of the distal end of the Cornu branchiale I, and presence/absence of a notch in the posteroventral surface of the cricoid). Homologies of the elements belonging to the hyobranchial apparatus could not be confirmed. As in other tetrapods the trachea consists of incomplete cartilaginous rings. Morphological changes and dissimilarities found in this study are useful as a context to start studying phylogenetic constraints. Moreover, in a heterochronic context, variations may be involved.

Ontogenetic variation of cranial characters used in crocodylian phylogenetic systematics has never been studied. Furthermore, the relationship between diet and skull morphological transformation during ontogeny has not been properly explored yet. We quantify the inter- and intraspecific skull morphological variation in extant caiman species focusing on those areas relevant to systematics and, also investigate the relation between diet and morphological changes during ontogeny. We applied a three-dimensional approach of geometric morphometrics on post-hatching ontogenetic cranial series of Caiman latirostris and C. yacare. In order to incorporate incomplete material, we additionally tested four different methods of missing landmark estimation and apply the thin-plate spline interpolation. We detected morphological changes between species and during ontogeny (snout and pterygoid flanges increase their proportions and, orbits, temporal fenestrae, skull roof and foramen magnum decrease their relative size) that constitutes part of a general morphological change in the cranial ontogeny of crocodylians. Moreover, the negative allometry of the fenestrae and neurocranium and the positive allometry of the splanchnocranium in both caiman species are the plesiomorphic condition, at least, for tetrapods. Shape changes during growth were found to be related to ontogenetic changes in the diet. Dissimilarities between species seem to be related to different mechanical requirements and different use of the habitat. We found inter- and intraspecific variation in some morphological characters with systematic implications (the contact of nasals with naris, the contact of prefrontals in the midline, and the bones that border the suborbital fenestra and the proportion in which one of them participates) that are not currently considered in phylogenetic analyses.

Caimanines are crocodylians currently restricted to South and Central America and the oldest members are from lower Palaeocene localities of the Salamanca Formation (Chubut Province, Argentina). We report here a new caimanine from this same unit represented by a skull roof and partial braincase. Its phylogenetic relationships were explored in a cladistic analysis using standard characters and a morphogeometric two-dimensional configuration of the skull roof. The phylogenetic results were used for an event-based supermodel quantitative palaeobiogeographic analysis. The new species is recovered as the most basal member of the South American caimanines, and the Cretaceous North American lineage 'Brachychampsa and related forms' as the most basal Caimaninae. The biogeographic results estimated north-central North America as the ancestral area of Caimaninae, showing that the Cretaceous and Palaeocene species of the group were more widespread than thought and became regionally extinct in North America around the Cretaceous-Palaeocene boundary. A dispersal event from north-central North America during the middle Late Cretaceous explains the arrival of the group to South America. The Palaeogene assemblage of Patagonian crocodylians is composed of three lineages of caimanines as a consequence of independent dispersal events that occurred between North and South America and within South America around the Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary.

Resonant acoustic mixing (RAM) is a new technology designed for intensive mixing of powders that offers the capability to process powders with minimal damage to particles. This feature is particularly important for mixing impact-sensitive materials such as explosives and propellants. While the RAM technique has been extensively employed for the mixing of powders and viscous polymers, comparatively little is known about its use for mechanosynthesis. We present here the first in situ study of RAM-induced co-crystallisation monitored using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. The phase profile of the reaction between nicotinamide and carbamazepine in the presence of a small amount of water was monitored at two different relative accelerations of the mixer. In marked contrast to ball-milling techniques, the lack of milling bodies in the RAM experiment does not hinder co-crystallisation of the two starting materials, which occurred readily and was independent of the frequency of oscillation. The reaction could be optimised by enhancing the number of reactive contacts through mixing and comminution. These observations provide new insight into the role of various experimental parameters in conventional mechanochemistry using liquid-assisted grinding techniques.

This study presents evidence on the role of emotions in the monetary evaluation of health technologies, namely, drug-eluting stents (DES) in our case. It is shown that subjects who are very afraid of having to undergo an angioplasty are: (a) less sensitive to the size of the risk reduction provided by DES and (b) willing to pay more. The lack of scope sensitivity questions the normative validity of the responses of highly emotional subjects. We provide evidence of this effect using what we call the cognitive-emotional random utility model and the responses of a face-to-face, computer-assisted personal interview survey conducted in a representative sample of the Spanish general population (n = 1663).

RESUMO

A population of Hammerschmidtiella diesingi was detected in specimens of Periplaneta americana collected in Córdoba city (Argentina) was studied. Nematodes were characterized based on morphological, morphometric and genetic (D2-D3 expansion segment) analyses. New data are provided, especially on particular morphological characters that were a matter of controversy in previous studies. H. diesingi is reported in Argentina for the first time.
