RESUMO
The participation of free-radical oxidation of lipids and polymers in the pathogenesis of diabetic angiopathies is analysed. The structure of the system of antioxidant protection and the mechanisms of damage to the vascular wall macromolecules in diabetic angiopathies is suggested. The protective effects of antioxidants in experimental studies and clinical practice are discussed. The conditions for and the principles of applying antioxidants in complex therapy of diabetic angiopathies are suggested.

Experiments were conducted on an alloxan diabetes model to study the preventive effects of the phenol antioxidants ionol and probucol. Ionol showed a tendency towards inhibition of glycemia and free radical oxidation of lipids. Probucol effectively inhibited the development of glycemia, hyperlipidemia, and intensification of autooxidation in the vascular wall. On the grounds of the results it is concluded that inclusion of probucol into complex treatment of patients suffering from diabetes mellitus with vascular complications is expedient.

In animals with peroxide model of atherosclerosis and patients with cerebral atherosclerosis, the protecting effects of antioxidants were studied. These were shown to inhibit both humoral and local manifestations of experimental atherosclerosis. In the patients, lipid levels were lowered with peroxidation indices returning to normal levels and clinical state simultaneously improving.

Patients with cerebral atherosclerosis were examined for the parameters of lipid and peroxidation metabolism and their correlation with the gravity of the disease. The findings obtained included the development of moderate hyperlipidemia and intensification of lipid free radical oxidation. The levels of hyperlipidemia showed no significant variations in patients with cerebral atherosclerosis of varying severity whereas the levels of free radical oxidation of lipids directly correlated with the severity of the disease. The processes of free radical oxidation play a significant role in the pathogenesis of cerebral atherosclerosis.

The experiments on rats have shown that during prolonged subliminal electrostimulation of limbic brain system structures peroxidation is enhanced in the blood and tissues (myocardium, liver, parodontium), with it being realized via activation of sympathoadrenal and hypothalamo-hypophyseal systems and stipulated by the failure of physiologic antioxidative mechanisms.
