Background: Given their sensitivity to environmental alterations, odonates act as reliable bioindicators to assess the effects of changes in freshwater ecosystems and associated terrestrial habitats. The region comprised between Lario and Brianza (Provinces of Como, Lecco and Monza and Brianza - Lombardy, N Italy) is one of the most urbanised of the Italian peninsula and large parts of its territory have been heavily altered, especially at low elevation. Despite this pervasive anthropogenisation, the area is still characterised by a considerable variety of freshwater habitats, possibly harbouring rich odonate communities, which, however, have been never thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to produce the first commented checklist of the Odonata of this region, accompanied by distribution maps. New information: The work is based on 12,093 records spanning from 1981 and 2022, derived from literature (289), revision of collections (42), citizen-science projects (1249) and unpublished data from the authors and their collaborators (10,513). Overall, fifty-five species occur - or occurred in the past - in the study area (20 Zygoptera and 35 Anisoptera). One species, Erythrommanajas, was confirmed exclusively before 1978, while seven species (Lestesbarbarus, Coenagrionscitulum, Aeshnaaffinis, Anaxephippiger, Somatochloraarctica, Sympetrummeridionale and Trithemisannulata) have been recorded only after 2000. Records referring to Chalcolestesparvidens and Sympetrumflaveolum were considered questionable and excluded from the checklist. A list of species for each protected site is additionally provided. This work highlighted the importance for odonates of Lario and Brianza Regions from a national perspective, in particular for species of conservation priority/interest, such as Sympecmapaedisca, Oxygastracurtisii and Sympetrumdepressiusculum.

Circulating leptin concentrations are shown to be influenced not only by hormones, but also by body weight and energy balance. High altitude (HA) exposure induces a daily negative energy balance and stress hormone activation. The aim of our study was to evaluate leptin concentration during both acute and prolonged HA exposure and its correlations with some metabolic and hormonal parameters. Twelve males were studied during a stay at HA (15-20 days at 5,050 m). Blood samples for serum leptin, plasma insulin and 24-h urinary epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE) were collected at sea level (SL), at the arrival at HA (A) and after 12-16 days (C) of stay. Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) were evaluated using the Lake Louise score and the results showed there was no relationship with leptin concentrations. During the stay, both body mass index and leptin levels significantly decreased in both groups [leptin from 1.88 (1.12) to 1.21 (1.04) ng/ml, P<0.008, in A; and to 1.06 (0.74) ng/ml, P<0.003, in C]. Acute HA exposure induced a clear-cut significant increase of NE ( P<0.001 in A, P<0.003 in C) while E and insulin levels were unchanged in both phases. Moreover, a significant correlation between leptin and NE absolute values, and leptin and insulin variations was found ( r 0.359, P<0.034 and r=0.560, P<0.007, respectively). Exposure to HA induces a decrease in fasting serum leptin concentrations in men. These changes are not linked to symptoms of AMS but to hormonal and energy balance variations, suggesting that leptin is involved in the endocrine and metabolic adaptations occurring during HA exposure.

RESUMO

Among the various models proposed to meet requirements for metrological performance in clinical laboratory measurements, that most widely used is intra- and inter-biological variation. However, this model has weaknesses: a) in some cases, intra-individual biological variation is so small that requirements based on such data may not be met by routine methods; b) there is great variation among the intra- and inter-individual biological variations themselves. We therefore propose integration between "state-of-the-art" methods to minimize imprecision, and also suggest that requirements calculated on the basis of biological variations should be used in setting requirements for minimizing imprecision. Furthermore, we describe a new scale for setting requirements from biological variation data and suggest that systematic error should be corrected whenever it is statistically significant.
