Silica plays a key role in the growth of silicifying primary producers (e.g., diatoms) and hence the ocean carbon pump. The Mediterranean Sea's eastern Levantine Basin (ELB) is a low silica (and low N and P) ultra-oligotrophic basin. Before 1965, Nile autumn floods were a major source of dissolved silica (DSi) and other nutrients to primary producers of the ELB continental shelf, also known as the Nilotic cell. The construction of the Aswan High Dam (AHD) in the mid-1960s, blocked these floods, drastically diminishing the autumn-diatom blooms offshore the Nile delta. However, the far-reaching and long-lasting effects of the Nile damming on the Si cycle in the ELB remain unclear. Here, we studied the changes in DSi in the surface water offshore Israel and the distribution of biogenic silica in deep-sea short sediment cores, collected hundreds of kilometers from the Nile outlet, at depths range of 1100-1900 m, offshore the ELB Israeli coast. We show post dam reduction and termination in flood related seasonality of DSi and a concurrent decrease (of up to 79 %) in biogenic silica (BSi) accumulation rates in surficial sediments relative to underlying sediments. These changes reflect the effects of Si (dissolved and particulate) retention by the AHD on diatoms production, export and burial in the ELB. This far-field effect was demonstrated in deep-sea areas subjected to intense lateral transport of resuspended sediments from the shelf via intermediate nepheloid layers and to coastal water intrusions, along the path of the pre-dam, flood plumes. Our core records show that the AHD worsened nutrient-diminished, exceptionally unfavorable conditions for diatoms that persisted in the deep ELB at least during the last four millennia.

Ship-generated oil pollution is a significant threat to the Mediterranean Sea. We present a geostatistical analysis of oil spills using three databases for the Mediterranean Sea: REMPEC (1977-2000) with 385 spills (17/year), ITOPF (1970-2018) with 167 spills (3.5/year) and EMSA (2015-2017) with 2066 detections (688/year). It was found that 88% of spills reported by REMPEC occurred near coastline areas, while 65% of the spills detected by EMSA occurred within a range of 22-100 km from the coastline. At the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) level, EMSA oil spills densities were positively correlated with shipping and port activity. We conclude that there is a need to develop an open-access database of oil spills that will be based on both reports and remote sensing acquisition methods. Such a database will facilitate more efficient enforcement of international conventions in offshore areas and will increase the likelihood of effective response.

We have assessed the redistribution of a secondary source of sedimentary anthropogenic mercury in the Haifa bay (HB) area (SE Levantine basin), which is the northern sink for Nile-driven sand. A long-term (30years) ~80% decrease of the total sedimentary mercury concentrations (THg) was recorded in the inner bay, while an up to 3-fold increase was recorded in the top sediments of the outer bay. Sedimentary THg depth profiles and their temporal variability were used to model the main re-distribution processes, mainly resuspension associated with winter storm-derived transport. This mechanism transforms a secondary, sandy and well-aerated sink into a tertiary, more silty and hypoxic source at adjacent peripheral areas, affecting mercury bioavailability. We revisited the concept of environmental relaxation, i.e. the rate of return of a polluted environment to an acceptable state, showing that sedimentary transport processes may affect the associated ecological risks, mainly at shallow-water coastal sites.
