RESUMO

In our study, we evaluated whether mean platelet volume (MPV) and neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are predictive values in the diagnosis of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis in patients diagnosed with scoliosis in our clinic. Approximately 15000 patients who applied to our spine outpatient clinic with the suspicion of scoliosis between 2011 and 2018 were reviewed retrospectively. 292 patients were included in the study. The patients were divided into 3 groups. Group 1; control group group 2; group with the possibility of developing scoliosis under follow-upand group 3; the patient group diagnosed with scoliosis. Spinal curvature degrees of the patients were measured using the Cobb method. The MPV and NLR values of the patients were compared with the degree of curvature measured by the cobb method. NLR was 2.17 ± 2.10 K/ul in Group 1, 2.42 ± 1.76 K/ul in Group 2, and 2.72 ± 3.91 K/ul in Group 3. Although the NLR of the 3rd group was higher than the other 2 groups, it was not statistically significant. (p > 0.05). MPV was 7.90 ± 1.07 fL in Group 1, 7.95 ±1.39 fL in Group 2, 8.33 ± 1.37 fL in Group 3.MPV was higher in Group 3 and was found to be statistically significant (p=0.024). After adjusting for the effects of gender and age variables on the groups, the difference in MPV between groups became more significant (p=0.017) . While there was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of NLR, it was observed that MPV was statistically significantly higher in patients with AIS.Could this relationship be a promising inflammatory marker for AIS? We think that this question should be answered by studies involving larger patient and control groups.

RESUMO

Background: Sonographic measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) can reflect intracranial pressure (ICP) indirectly and determine the neurology intensive care unit (NICU) requirement and mortality in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Aim: To demonstrate the effectiveness of ONSD to determine mortality, morbidity, and NICU requirement on patients with the AIS. Methods: The sonographic ONSD measurements were performed on each patient with AIS, over 18 years old. All patients were categorized according to the Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project (OCSP) classification system. MRI images were examined for increased ICP, and the patients were categorized into two groups as increased ICP (i-ICP) and normal ICP. The ONSD results were evaluated in terms of classifications, outcomes, and prognosis of the patients. Results: One hundred and five patients were included and 31 (35.2%) were in the i-ICP group. The median ONSDs were 5.26 mm in the i-ICP group and 4.62 mm in the normal ICP group (P < 0.001). The median ONSDs were 5.13 mm in the NICU group and 4.69 mm in the neurology ward (NW) group (P = 0.001). The total anterior circulation infarction (TACI) subgroup had higher ONSDs than the others (TACI: 5.27 mm; PACI: 4.73 mm; POCI: 4.77 mm; and LACI: 4.64 mm, P < 0.001). The NICU requirements were higher in the TACI subgroup. The median ONSD was 5.42 mm in the deceased group (survived: 4.77 mm, P < 0.001). Conclusion: ONSD may be favorable for predicting the increased ICP and the NICU requirement in OCSP subgroups. Moreover, ONSD can be used to foresee the mortality of AIS.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Lateral epicondylitis (LE) can result in a functional loss in patients because of pain and has recently become more prevalent. This study compared the effects of minimally invasive prolotherapy (PRO) and percutaneous dry needling (PDN) on LE treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were divided into three groups; Group 1 included patients undergoing PDN, Group 2 included those undergoing PRO, and Group 3 included those undergoing PDN+PRO. All these treatments were administered three times and at a 3-week interval in each patient. Data on the visual analog scale (VAS) and patient-rated tennis elbow evaluation (PRTEE) scale scores of the patients were collected at weeks 0, 3, and 6 and month 6 and retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: The VAS and PRTEE scores decreased in all groups. The decrease in Group 3 was higher than that in the other groups (p<0.001). Upon evaluating within-group differences in VAS and PRTEE scores, the scores at week 3, week 6, and month 6 gradually decreased compared with the baseline in all groups (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: PDN and PRO are minimally invasive and can successfully treat LE. A combination of PDN+PRO provides better results than PDN or PRO alone. As the materials we used in these treatments are relatively inexpensive and readily available, we believe our study will help reduce the national healthcare costs allocated for the treatment of LE.

RESUMO

A total of 200 guinea fowl was reared in either barn or free-range systems and slaughtered at 14, 16, or 18 wk of age in order to determine the effects of production system on live weight, feed consumption, and some carcass and slaughter traits. Production system had a significant effect on live weight until 14 wk of age. Live weights were similar between free-range and indoor production systems at 16 (1,150 g vs. 1,152 g) and 18 (1,196 g vs. 1,203 g) wk of age. Guinea fowl reared in a free-range system consumed more feed (7,693 g vs. 6,983 g), and guinea fowl reared in a barn had better feed conversion ratio (5.80 vs. 6.43) (P < 0.05). Production system, gender, and slaughter age did not affect the dressing percentage. Guinea fowl reared in a free-range system had significantly less abdominal fat (P < 0.05).

RESUMO

1. This study investigates the slaughter, carcass and meat quality traits of artificially and naturally hatched geese in intensive and free-range production systems. 2. The study was conducted with 114 naturally hatched and 102 artificially hatched geese. From each replicate of the intensive and free-range systems, one female and one male goose were slaughtered at the ages of 14, 16 and 18 weeks (a total of 32 geese per slaughter week). 3. Artificially hatched geese had higher slaughter weights (5280 vs. 4404 g), carcass weights (3520 vs. 2863), dressing percentages (66.6-65.2% vs. 65.0-63.6%) and carcass part, feather and edible inner organ weights. The ratio of both edible inner organs and abdominal fat was higher in naturally hatched geese. Breast meat L*, a* and pH values and thigh meat dry matter values were higher in artificially hatched geese, whereas thigh meat b* and pH values were higher in naturally hatched geese. 4. Intensively reared geese had higher slaughter weights (4900 vs. 4783 g), carcass weights (3253 vs. 3130 g) and abdominal fat weights (280 vs. 250 g), as well as higher dressing percentages (66.3-64.9% vs. 65.3-63.9%). Breast meat b* and thigh meat L* values were higher in the intensive system, while breast and thigh pH values, dripping loss and cooking loss were higher in the free-range system. Water-holding capacity was higher in the intensive system. 5. In conclusion, artificially hatched, intensively reared geese had the highest slaughter weights; however, both artificially and naturally hatched geese raised in a free-range system reached acceptable slaughter weights and can thus be recommended for use with this type of production system.

RESUMO

1. This study investigated the effect of incubation type and production system on geese growth traits. 2. A total of 216 geese were either naturally (114) or artificially (102) hatched and reared in intensive or free-range production systems (4 replicates each) until 18 weeks of age. 3. Weights of naturally hatched goslings (NHG) were significantly higher than artificially hatched goslings (AHG) at 2 weeks (644 vs. 536 g); however, weights of AHG were significantly higher than NHG at both 6 weeks (3245 vs. 3010 g) and 18 weeks (5212 vs. 4353 g). 4. AHG had better feed conversion ratios (FCRs) than NHG (6.21 vs. 6.46 at 18 weeks). Feed consumption of naturally hatched geese was found higher in first 4 weeks when compared to artificially hatched geese and artificially hatched geese consumed more feed than naturally hatched geese after 8 weeks. 5. Production system had insignificant effects on feed consumption, FCRs, viability and mutilation rates. 6. Slipped wings were more frequent in NHG than AHG (8.32% vs. 1.68% at 6 weeks; 23.84% vs. 5.12% between 7 and 18 weeks) and in free-range production when compared to intensive production (17.88% vs. 11.08% over the course of the production period). 7. The study results indicate that both artificially and NHG can be reared in free-range production systems without any loss in performance and in deference to animal welfare.

RESUMO

1. A total of 400 Alectoris chukar partridges were reared in either barn or free-range production systems and slaughtered at 14, 16 or 18 weeks of age in order to determine the effects of production system, age and gender on carcass traits (live weight, carcass weight, carcass yield, carcass part and edible inner organ percentages at slaughtering) and meat quality (L*, a* and b* meat colour and pH). 2. Production system had a significant effect on both slaughter traits and meat quality. 3. Partridges raised in barn conditions had higher live weights and carcass weights whereas meat quality was better in birds raised in the free-range system.

RESUMO

Measurement of glycosylated haemoglobin has become an essential tool in the management of diabetic patients. A recently developed device allows the rapid immuno-assay of HbA1c in 1 microliter capillary blood obtained by a finger prick. In 100 ambulatory diabetic patients, we compared the results obtained with this method to those obtained in venous blood using a standard affinity chromatography laboratory method. Although both methods correlated (r = 0.88, p < 0.001), the mean +/- SD levels respectively obtained differed slightly (7.6 +/- 1.5 vs 79 +/- 1.4% p < 0.001). The 95% confidence interval of the difference was [-0.41. -0.14]. Considering a cut-off HbA1c value of 8%, as indicative of the need for treatment adjustment, 33 patients with the capillary blood immuno-assay method and 42 with the venous-blood affinity chromatography method were above that limit (Mc Nemar test, p < 0.05). In conclusion, the rapid assay of HbA1c in capillary blood can be useful for the management of some diabetic patients but the results are not readily exchangeable with those obtained from other standardized laboratory methods. Consequently, specific ranges and clinical decision limits must be determined.

RESUMO

The files of 132 patients with Type 2 diabetes were retrospectively studied to characterize the influence of metabolic control and residual insulin secretion on neuropathy and retinopathy, the two most frequent degenerative diabetic complications. Patients were classified according to their metabolic control (mean HbA1C either < or > or = 8%; reference values: 3-6%) and residual endogenous insulin secretion (fasting plasma C-peptide levels either < or > or = 0.600 nmol/l). Neuropathy was more frequent in patients with poor metabolic control (32/64 = 50%) than in those adequately controlled (17/68 = 25%; p < 0.005). In both subgroups, the level of endogenous insulin secretion did not influence the prevalence of neuropathy. Retinopathy was less effected than neuropathy by the degree of metabolic control (37.5% in the subgroup with HbA1C > or = 8% v.s. 25% in the subgroup with HbA1C < 8%; p < 0.10), but was influenced by residual insulin secretion. Indeed, in patients with inadequate metabolic control, the prevalence of retinopathy was significantly increased in those with higher endogenous insulin secretion (51.4 versus 20.6%, p < 0.02) and thus probably higher insulin resistance. Furthermore, higher systolic arterial blood pressure was observed in the subgroups with a higher prevalence of retinopathy. Such conclusions were confirmed using multivariate analysis. Thus, in Type 2 diabetes, neuropathy is essentially affected by the degree of metabolic control, whereas retinopathy is also influenced by the level of residual endogenous insulin secretion and the presence of systolic hypertension.
