RESUMO

This paper addresses the limitations of using smartphones in innovative localization systems based on audio signal processing, particularly in the frequency range of 18-22 kHz, due to the lack of technical specifications and noise characterization. We present a comprehensive study on signal design and performance analysis for acoustic communication in air ducts, focusing on signal propagation in indoor environments considering room acoustics and signal behavior. The research aims to determine optimal parameters, including the frequency band, signal types, signal length, pause duration, and sampling frequency, for the efficient transmission and reception of acoustic signals for commercial off-the-shelf (COST) devices. Factors like inter-symbol interference (ISI) and multiple access interference (MAI) that affect signal detection accuracy are considered. The measurements help define the frequency spectrum for common devices like smartphones, speakers, and sound cards. We propose a custom signal with specific properties and reasons for their selection, setting the signal length at 50 ms and a pause time of 5 ms to minimize overlap and interference between consecutive signals. The sampling rate is fixed at 48 kHz to maintain the required resolution for distinguishing individual signals in correlation-based signal processing.

RESUMO

In this paper, a report on the development of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based connected university system is presented. There have been multiple smart solutions developed at the university over recent years. However, the user base of these systems is limited. The IoT-based connected university system allows for integration of multiple subsystems without the need to implement all of them in the same environment, thus enabling end-users to access multiple solutions through a single common interface. The implementation is based on microservice architecture, with the focus mainly on system robustness, scalability, and universality. In the system design, four subsystems are currently implemented, i.e., the subsystem for indoor navigation, the subsystem for parking assistants, the subsystem for smart classrooms or offices, and the subsystem for news aggregation from university life. The principles of all implemented subsystems, as well as the implementation of the system as a web interface and a mobile application, are presented in the paper. Moreover, the implementation of the indoor navigation subsystem that uses signals from Bluetooth beacons is described in detail. The paper also presents results proving the concept of the Bluetooth-based indoor navigation, taking into account different placements of nodes. The tests were performed in a real-world environment to evaluate the feasibility of the navigation module that utilizes deterministic fingerprinting algorithms to estimate the positions of users' devices.

RESUMO

This paper proposes energy-efficient solutions for the smart light-emitting diode (LED) lighting system, which provides minimal energy consumption while simultaneously satisfying illuminance requirements of the users in a typical office space. In addition to artificial light from dimmable LED lamps, natural daylight coming from external sources, such as windows, is considered as a source of illumination in an indoor environment. In order to reduce total energy consumption, the smart LED system has the possibility to dim LED lamps, resulting in reduced LED output power. Additionally, various LED lamps' functionality, such as semi-angle of the half illuminance and LED tilting, are introduced as an additional parameter to be optimized to achieve greater energy saving of the designed system. In order to properly exploit external lighting, the idea to reduce overall daylight intensity at a users' location is realized by the option to dim the windows with a shading factor. Based on the users' requirements for a minimal and desired level of illumination, the proposed optimization problems can be solved by implementing different optimization algorithms. The obtained solutions are able to give instructions to a smart LED system to manage and control system parameters (LEDs dimming levels, semi-angles of the half illuminance, orientation of LEDs, the shading factor) in order to design total illumination, which ensures minimal energy consumption and users' satisfaction related to illuminance requirements.

RESUMO

While a vast number of location-based services appeared lately, indoor positioning solutions are developed to provide reliable position information in environments where traditionally used satellite-based positioning systems cannot provide access to accurate position estimates. Indoor positioning systems can be based on many technologies; however, radio networks and more precisely Wi-Fi networks seem to attract the attention of a majority of the research teams. The most widely used localization approach used in Wi-Fi-based systems is based on fingerprinting framework. Fingerprinting algorithms, however, require a radio map for position estimation. This paper will describe a solution for dynamic radio map creation, which is aimed to reduce the time required to build a radio map. The proposed solution is using measurements from IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units), which are processed with a particle filter dead reckoning algorithm. Reference points (RPs) generated by the implemented dead reckoning algorithm are then processed by the proposed reference point merging algorithm, in order to optimize the radio map size and merge similar RPs. The proposed solution was tested in a real-world environment and evaluated by the implementation of deterministic fingerprinting positioning algorithms, and the achieved results were compared with results achieved with a static radio map. The achieved results presented in the paper show that positioning algorithms achieved similar accuracy even with a dynamic map with a low density of reference points.

RESUMO

In recent times smart devices have attracted a large number of users. Since many of these devices allow position estimation using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals, a large number of location-based applications and services have emerged, especially in transport systems. However GNSS signals are affected by the environment and are not always present, especially in dense urban environment or indoors. In this work firstly a Modular Localization Algorithm is proposed to allow seamless switching between different positioning modules. This helps us develop a positioning system that is able to provide position estimates in both indoor and outdoor environments without any user interaction. Since the proposed system can run as a service on any smart device, it could allow users to navigate not only in outdoor environments, but also indoors, e.g., underground garages, tunnels etc. Secondly we present the proposal of a 2-phase map reduction algorithm which allows one to significantly reduce the complexity of position estimation processes in case that positioning is performed using a fingerprinting framework. The proposed 2-phase map reduction algorithm can also improve the accuracy of the position estimates by filtering out reference points that are far from the mobile device. Both algorithms were implemented into a positioning system and tested in real world conditions in both indoor and outdoor environments.
