RESUMO

High-altitude pregnancy increases the incidence of fetal growth restriction and reduces birth weight. This poses a significant clinical challenge as both are linked to adverse health outcomes, including raised infant mortality and the development of the metabolic syndrome in later life. While this reduction in birth weight is mostly understood to be driven by the hypobaric hypoxia of high altitude, the causative mechanism is unclear. Moreover, it is now recognized that highland ancestry confers protection against this reduction in birth weight. Here, we analyze the evidence that pregnancy at high altitude reduces birth weight and that highland ancestry confers protection, discussing mechanisms contributing to both effects.

Restoration efforts often focus on changing the composition and structure of invaded plant communities, with two implicit assumptions: (1) functional interactions with species of other trophic levels, such as pollinators, will reassemble automatically when native plant diversity is restored and (2) restored communities will be more resilient to future stressors. However, the impact of restoration activities on pollinator richness, plant-pollinator interaction network structure, and network robustness is incompletely understood. Leveraging a restoration chronosequence in Pacific Northwest prairies, we examined the effects of restoration-focused prescribed fire and native forb replanting on floral resources, pollinator visitation, and plant-pollinator network structure. We then simulated the effects of plant species loss/removal scenarios on secondary extinction cascades in the networks. Specifically, we explored three management-relevant plant loss scenarios (removal of an abundant exotic forb, removal of an abundant forb designated a noxious weed, and loss of the rarest native forb) and compared them to control scenarios. Pyrodiversity and proportion of area recently burned increased the abundance and diversity of floral resources, with concomitant increases in pollinator visitation and diversity. Pyrodiversity also decreased network connectance and nestedness, increased modularity, and buffered networks against secondary extinction cascades. Rare forbs contributed disproportionately to network robustness in less restored prairies, while removal of typical "problem" plants like exotic and noxious species had relatively small impacts on network robustness, particularly in prairies with a long history of restoration activities. Restoration actions aimed mainly at improving the diversity and abundance of pollinator-provisioning plants may also produce plant-pollinator networks with increased resilience to plant species losses.

Follicular helper T (Tfh) cells are essential for germinal center (GC) B cell responses. However, it is not clear which PD-1+CXCR5+Bcl6+CD4+ T cells will differentiate into PD-1hiCXCR5hiBcl6hi GC-Tfh cells and how GC-Tfh cell differentiation is regulated. Here, we report that the sustained Tigit expression in PD-1+CXCR5+CD4+ T cells marks the precursor Tfh (pre-Tfh) to GC-Tfh transition, whereas Tigit-PD-1+CXCR5+CD4+ T cells upregulate IL-7Rα to become CXCR5+CD4+ T memory cells with or without CCR7. We demonstrate that pre-Tfh cells undergo substantial further differentiation at the transcriptome and chromatin accessibility levels to become GC-Tfh cells. The transcription factor c-Maf appears critical in governing the pre-Tfh to GC-Tfh transition, and we identify Plekho1 as a stage-specific downstream factor regulating the GC-Tfh competitive fitness. In summary, our work identifies an important marker and regulatory mechanism of PD-1+CXCR5+CD4+ T cells during their developmental choice between memory T cell fate and GC-Tfh cell differentiation.

Community gun violence disproportionately impacts youth in low-income urban neighborhoods. Integrating trauma-informed mental health care in community-based out-of-school time (OST) programs is an innovative method of service delivery for these youth. This article provides justification for integrating evidence-based, trauma-informed services in OST programs within communities characterized by high rates of violent crime to minimize the impact of violence exposure on youth mental health. We describe the initial feasibility of a model program, the Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) Initiative, implemented in a small city in southeastern Pennsylvania. Within the first six months of the VIP Initiative, 95 community residents (90% under age 18; 51% Hispanic) received intervention services, primarily through single-session and short-term weekly group intervention in OST programs, and 80% of OST youth development staff participated in at least one trauma-informed professional development training. Recommendations to enhance and expand the delivery of trauma-informed services in the novel setting of OST programs are provided.

Recognition and rejection of chemically defended prey is critical to maximizing fitness for predators. Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) which strongly inhibit voltage-gated sodium channels in diverse animal taxa are produced by several species of the bloom-forming algal genus Alexandrium where they appear to function as chemical defenses against grazing copepods. Despite PSTs being produced and localized within phytoplankton cells, some copepods distinguish toxic from non-toxic prey, selectively ingesting less toxic cells, in ways that suggest cell surface recognition perhaps associated with non-polar metabolites. In this study LC/MS and NMR-based metabolomics revealed that the non-polar metabolomes of two toxic species (Alexandrium catenella and Alexandrium pacificum) vary considerably from their non-toxic congener Alexandrium tamarense despite all three being very closely related. Toxic and non-toxic Alexandrium spp. were distinguished from each other by metabolites belonging to seven lipid classes. Of these, 17 specific metabolites were significantly more abundant in both toxic A. catenella and A. pacificum compared to non-toxic A. tamarense suggesting that just a small portion of the observed metabolic variability is associated with toxicity. Future experiments aimed at deciphering chemoreception mechanisms of copepod perception of Alexandrium toxicity should consider these metabolites, and the broader lipid classes phosphatidylcholines and sterols, as potential candidate cues.

Covering: January 2015 through December 2017 This review focuses on recent studies on the chemical ecology of planktonic marine ecosystems, with the objective of presenting a comprehensive overview of new findings in the field in the time period covered. In order to highlight the role of chemically mediated interactions in the marine plankton this review has been organized by ecological concepts starting with intraspecific communication, followed by interspecific interactions (including facilitation and mutualism, host-parasite, allelopathy, and predator-prey), and finally the effects of plankton secondary metabolites on community and ecosystem-wide interactions.

Introduction: Predictive equations (PE) are used in lieu of indirect calorimetry (IC) due to cost and limited resources; however, these equations may not be as accurate as IC in estimating resting energy expenditure (REE) in critically ill patients, putting them at risk of malnutrition. The purpose of this study is to compare predicted and measured energy expenditure (MEE) in critically ill adults with acute brain injury. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective review of adult patients admitted to the Neurosciences ICU with acute brain injury between May 1st, 2014 and April 1st, 2016 who had IC performed. The Harris Benedict (HBE), Penn State University, and Mifflin St Jeor (MSJ) PE were used in comparison to IC results. Subgroup analyses stratified patients based on BMI and type of acute brain injury. Results: One hundred and forty-four patients met inclusion criteria. Comparing predicted and MEE found no significant difference (p = 0.1). High degrees of interpatient variability were discovered, with standard deviations ranging from 17 to 29% of each PE. Pearson's correlations indicated weak associations when HBE, Penn State, and MSJ were individually compared to MEE (r = 0.372, 0.409, and 0.372, respectively). A significant difference was found between predicted and MEE in patients with a BMI < 30 kg/m2 (p < 0.01) and in those with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (p < 0.01). Discussion: Due to interpatient variability that exists among REE of critically ill patients with acute brain injury, IC should be used when feasible.
