BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The long-term impact of gadolinium retention in the dentate nuclei of patients undergoing administration of seriate gadolinium-based contrast agents is still widely unexplored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of gadolinium retention on motor and cognitive disability in patients with MS during long-term follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, clinical data were obtained from patients with MS followed in a single center from 2013 to 2022 at different time points. These included the Expanded Disability Status Scale score to evaluate motor impairment and the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for MS battery to investigate cognitive performances and their respective changes with time. The association with qualitative and quantitative MR imaging signs of gadolinium retention (namely, the presence of dentate nuclei T1-weighted hyperintensity and changes in longitudinal relaxation R1 maps, respectively) was probed using different General Linear Models and regression analyses. RESULTS: No significant differences in motor or cognitive symptoms emerged between patients showing dentate nuclei hyperintensity and those without visible changes on T1WIs (P = .14 and 0.92, respectively). When we tested possible relationships between quantitative dentate nuclei R1 values and both motor and cognitive symptoms, separately, the regression models including demographic, clinical, and MR imaging features explained 40.5% and 16.5% of the variance, respectively, without any significant effect of dentate nuclei R1 values (P = .21 and 0.30, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that gadolinium retention in the brains of patients with MS is not associated with long-term motor or cognitive outcomes.

BACKGROUND: While low testosterone (T) was described as a predictor of unfavorable coronavirus-disease 19 (COVID-19) outcome in men, data concerning the role of T in women with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection are scant and limited to small cohorts. This study investigated the relationship between serum T values and outcomes of COVID-19 in a large female hospitalized cohort. METHODS: One-hundred-sixty-eight adult women (median age 77, range 18-100 years; 154 in post-menopause) hospitalized for COVID-19 were assessed for PaO2/Fio2 ratio, serum T and inflammatory parameters. RESULTS: Median duration for hospital stay was 14.2 days (range 1-115) with overall mortality of 26% (n = 44). Subjects who died were significantly older (p < 0.001), had significantly more comorbidities (p = 0.015) and higher serum T (p = 0.040), white blood cells (p = 0.007), c-reactive protein (CRP; p < 0.001), interleukin-6 (IL-6; p < 0.001), procalcitonin (PCT; p < 0.001), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH; p = 0.001), D-dimer (p = 0.035), fibrinogen (p = 0.038) and lower serum free-triiodothyronine (FT3; p < 0.001) and luteinizing hormone (LH; p = 0.024) values. In post-menopausal women, significant associations were observed between T levels and serum CRP (rho: 0.23; p = 0.002), IL-6 (rho: 0.41; p < 0.001), LDH (rho: 0.34; p < 0.001), D-Dimer (rho: 0.21; p = 0.008), PCT (rho: 0.26; p = 0.001) and HDL cholesterol (rho: - 0,22, p = 0.008). In multivariate regression analyses, serum T maintained the significant association with mortality after correction for age, coexistent comorbidities and serum LH and FT3, whereas it was lost after correction for inflammatory parameters. CONCLUSION: In females, high serum T levels might be a mirror of inflammatory phenotype and worse COVID-19 course.

Quantitative MR imaging techniques allow evaluating different aspects of brain microstructure, providing meaningful information about the pathophysiology of damage in CNS disorders. In the study of patients with MS, quantitative MR imaging techniques represent an invaluable tool for studying changes in myelin and iron content occurring in the context of inflammatory and neurodegenerative processes. In the first section of this review, we summarize the physics behind quantitative MR imaging, here defined as relaxometry and quantitative susceptibility mapping, and describe the neurobiological correlates of quantitative MR imaging findings. In the second section, we focus on quantitative MR imaging application in MS, reporting the main findings in both the gray and white matter compartments, separately addressing macroscopically damaged and normal-appearing parenchyma.

PURPOSE: There is emerging evidence that radiomics analyses can improve detection of skeletal fragility. In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated radiomics features (RFs) on computed tomography (CT) images of the lumbar spine in subjects with or without fragility vertebral fractures (VFs). METHODS: Two-hundred-forty consecutive individuals (mean age 60.4 ± 15.4, 130 males) were evaluated by radiomics analyses on opportunistic lumbar spine CT. VFs were diagnosed in 58 subjects by morphometric approach on CT or XR-ray spine (D4-L4) images. DXA measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) was performed on 17 subjects with VFs. RESULTS: Twenty RFs were used to develop the machine learning model reaching 0.839 and 0.789 of AUROC in the train and test datasets, respectively. After correction for age, VFs were significantly associated with RFs obtained from non-fractured vertebrae indicating altered trabecular microarchitecture, such as low-gray level zone emphasis (LGLZE) [odds ratio (OR) 1.675, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.215-2.310], gray level non-uniformity (GLN) (OR 1.403, 95% CI 1.023-1.924) and neighboring gray-tone difference matrix (NGTDM) contrast (OR 0.692, 95% CI 0.493-0.971). Noteworthy, no significant differences in LGLZE (p = 0.94), GLN (p = 0.40) and NGDTM contrast (p = 0.54) were found between fractured subjects with BMD T score < - 2.5 SD and those in whom VFs developed in absence of densitometric diagnosis of osteoporosis. CONCLUSIONS: Artificial intelligence-based analyses on spine CT images identified RFs associated with fragility VFs. Future studies are needed to test the predictive value of RFs on opportunistic CT scans in identifying subjects with primary and secondary osteoporosis at high risk of fracture.

Growing evidencehas described a correlation between aldosterone, obesity, and insulin resistance, suggesting that adipocyte-related factors and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) overactivation may alter aldosterone secretion, potentially leading to obesity and glucose intolerance. Preclinical studies showed that pharmacological antagonism of MR prevents white adipose tissue dysfunction(s) and expansion, activates brown adipose tissue, and improves glucose tolerance. The clinical use of nonsteroidal MR antagonists has been shown to reduce the risk of diabetic kidney disease progression and cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes. This review aims to summarize the effects of pharmacological MR blockade on obesity and its associated metabolic comorbidities, with a particular focus on the therapeutic implications of nonsteroidal MR antagonists in the management of patients with diabetes.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Modifications of magnetic susceptibility have been consistently demonstrated in the subcortical gray matter of MS patients, but some uncertainties remain concerning the underlying neurobiological processes and their clinical relevance. We applied quantitative susceptibility mapping and longitudinal relaxation rate relaxometry to clarify the relative contribution of atrophy and iron and myelin changes to deep gray matter damage and disability in MS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Quantitative susceptibility mapping and longitudinal relaxation rate maps were computed for 91 patients and 55 healthy controls from MR images acquired at 3T. Applying an external model, we estimated iron and myelin concentration maps for all subjects. Subsequently, changes of deep gray matter iron and myelin concentration (atrophy-dependent) and content (atrophy-independent) were investigated globally (bulk analysis) and regionally (voxel-based and atlas-based thalamic subnuclei analyses). The clinical impact of the observed MRI modifications was evaluated via regression models. RESULTS: We identified reduced thalamic (P < .001) and increased pallidal (P < .001) mean iron concentrations in patients with MS versus controls. Global myelin and iron content in the basal ganglia did not differ between the two groups, while actual iron depletion was present in the thalamus (P < .001). Regionally, patients showed increased iron concentration in the basal ganglia (P ≤ .001) and reduced iron and myelin content in thalamic posterior-medial regions (P ≤ .004), particularly in the pulvinar (P ≤ .001). Disability was predicted by thalamic volume (B = -0.341, P = .02), iron concentration (B = -0.379, P = .005) and content (B = -0.406, P = .009), as well as pulvinar iron (B = -0.415, P = .003) and myelin (B = -0.415, P = .02) content, independent of atrophy. CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative MRI suggests an atrophy-related iron increase within the basal ganglia of patients with MS, along with an atrophy-independent reduction of thalamic iron and myelin correlating with disability. Absolute depletions of thalamic iron and myelin may represent sensitive markers of subcortical GM damage, which add to the clinical impact of thalamic atrophy in MS.

PURPOSE: Hypovitaminosis D has emerged as potential risk factor for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in the general population with variable effects on the outcome of the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). The aim of this retrospective single-center study was to investigate the impact of hypovitaminosis D and secondary hyperparathyroidism on respiratory outcomes of COVID-19. METHODS: Three-hundred-forty-eight consecutive patients hospitalized for COVID-19 at the IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital, Rozzano, Milan (Italy) were evaluated for arterial partial pressure oxygen (PaO2)/fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) ratio, serum 25hydroxy-vitamin D [25(OH)D], parathyroid hormone (PTH) and inflammatory parameters at study entry and need of ventilation during the hospital stay. RESULTS: In the entire population, vitamin D deficiency (i.e., 25(OH)D values < 12 ng/mL) was significantly associated with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure at the study entry [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 2.48, 95% confidence interval 1.29-4.74; P = 0.006], independently of age and sex of subjects, serum calcium and inflammatory parameters. In patients evaluated for serum PTH (97 cases), secondary hyperparathyroidism combined with vitamin D deficiency was significantly associated with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure at study entry (P = 0.001) and need of ventilation during the hospital stay (P = 0.031). CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence that vitamin D deficiency, when associated with secondary hyperparathyroidism, may negatively impact the clinical outcome of SARS-CoV-2-related pneumonia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Changes of brain structure and function have been described in peripheral neuropathies. The aim of our study was to systematically investigate possible modifications of major large-scale brain networks using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) patients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 3-T MRI brain scans were acquired of right-handed genetically confirmed CMT1A patients and age- and sex-comparable healthy controls. Patients also underwent clinical and electrophysiological examinations assessing neurological impairment. RS-fMRI data were analysed using a seed-based approach, with 32 different seeds sampling the main hubs of default mode, sensorimotor, visual, salience (SN), dorsal attention, frontoparietal, language and cerebellar networks. Between-group differences in terms of functional connectivity (FC) with the explored seeds were tested voxelwise, correcting for local grey matter density to account for possible structural abnormalities, whilst the relationship between FC modifications and neurological impairment was investigated using robust correlation analyses. RESULTS: Eighteen CMT1A patients (34.0 ± 11.4 years; M/F 11/7) were enrolled, along with 20 healthy controls (30.1 ± 10.2 years; M/F 11/9). In the CMT group compared to controls, clusters of increased FC with the visual cortex (P = 0.001), SN (P < 6 × 10-4 ), dorsal attention network (P < 8 × 10-5 ) and language network (P < 7 × 10-4 ) were found, along with a single cluster of reduced FC with the visual cortex in the left lentiform nucleus (P = 10-6 ). A significant correlation emerged between neurophysiological impairment and increased FC with right temporal language areas (r = 0.655, P = 0.006), along with an association between walking ability and increased FC with the left supramarginal gyrus (SN) (r = 0.620, P = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: Our data show evidence of diffuse functional reorganization involving multiple large-scale networks in the CMT1A brain, independent of structural modifications and partially correlating with peripheral nerve damage and functional impairment.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility and sensitivity of multimodality PET/CT and MRI imaging for non-invasive characterization of brain microglial/macrophage activation occurring during the acute phase in a mouse model of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RR-MS) using [18F]DPA-714, a selective radioligand for the 18-kDa translocator protein (TSPO), superparamagnetic iron oxide particles (SPIO), and ex vivo immunohistochemistry. METHODS: Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) was induced in female SJL/J mice by immunization with PLP139-151. Seven symptomatic EAE mice and five controls underwent both PET/CT and MRI studies between 11 and 14 days post-immunization. SPIO was injected i.v. in the same animals immediately after [18F]DPA-714 and MRI acquisition was performed after 24 h. Regional brain volumes were defined according to a mouse brain atlas on co-registered PET and SPIO-MRI images. [18F]DPA-714 standardized uptake value (SUV) ratios (SUVR), with unaffected neocortex as reference, and SPIO fractional volumes (SPIO-Vol) were generated. Both SUVR and SPIO-Vol values were correlated with the clinical score (CS) and among them. Five EAE and four control mice underwent immunohistochemical analysis with the aim of identifying activated microglia/macrophage and TSPO expressions. RESULTS: SUVR and SPIO-Vol values were significantly increased in EAE compared with controls in the hippocampus (p < 0.01; p < 0.02, respectively), thalamus (p < 0.02; p < 0.05, respectively), and cerebellum and brainstem (p < 0.02), while only SPIO-Vol was significantly increased in the caudate/putamen (p < 0.05). Both SUVR and SPIO-Vol values were positively significantly correlated with CS and among them in the same regions. TSPO/Iba1 and F4/80/Prussian blue staining immunohistochemistry suggests that increased activated microglia/macrophages underlay TSPO expression and SPIO uptake in symptomatic EAE mice. CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary results suggest that both activated microglia and infiltrated macrophages are present in vulnerable brain regions during the acute phase of PLP-EAE and contribute to disease severity. Both [18F]DPA-714-PET and SPIO-MRI appear suitable modalities for preclinical study of neuroinflammation in MS mice models.

PURPOSE: To compare the performance US and MR in identifying placental adhesion spectrum (PAS) in placenta previa (PP) and to establish a potential method of image interpretation. METHODS: US and MR examinations of 51 patients with PP were selected. The presence of imaging signs commonly used to detect PAS was assessed. Penalized logistic regression was performed considering histology as standard of reference; only signs statistically significant (p < 0.05) were considered for ROC and multivariate analysis. The probability of PAS according to the presence of US and/or MR signs was then assessed. RESULTS: At univariate analysis, loss of retroplacental clear space, myometrial thinning (MT) and placenta lacunar spaces on US, intraplacental dark bands (IDBs), focal interruption of myometrial border (FIMB) and abnormal vascularity (AV) on MR were statistically significant (p < 0.01). Three diagnostic methods for PAS were then developed for both US and MR when at least one (Method 1), two (Method 2) or three (Method 3) imaging signs occurred, respectively. Method 2 for MR showed a significantly (p < 0.05) higher accuracy (91%) compared to the other methods. When MR IDBs and AV as well as IDBs and FIMB were present in combination with US MT the probability of PAS increased from 75 to 90% and from 80 to 91%, respectively. CONCLUSION: MR demonstrated a higher diagnostic accuracy than US to detect PAS. However, since the combination of MR and US signs could improve the probability to detect PAS, a complementary diagnostic role of these techniques could be considered.

Ultrasound is a noninvasive routine method that allows real-time monitoring of fetal development in utero to determine gestational age and to detect congenital anomalies and multiple pregnancies. To date, the developmental biology of Chinchilla lanigera has not yet been characterized. This species has been found to undergo placentation, long gestation, and fetal dimensions similar to those in humans. The aim of this study was to assess the use of high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) and clinical ultrasound (US) to predict gestational age in chinchillas and evaluate the possibility of this species as a new animal model for the study of human pregnancy. In this study, 35 pregnant females and a total of 74 embryos and fetuses were monitored. Ultrasound examination was feasible in almost all chinchilla subjects. It was possible to monitor the chinchilla embryo with HFUS from embryonic day (E) 15 to 60 and with US from E15 to E115 due to fetus dimensions. The placenta could be visualized and measured with HFUS from E15, but not with US until E30. From E30, the heartbeat became detectable and it was possible to measure fetal biometrics. In the late stages of pregnancy, stomach, eyes, and lenses became visible. Our study demonstrated the importance of employing both techniques while monitoring embryonic and fetal development to obtain an overall and detailed view of all structures and to recognize any malformation at an early stage. Pregnancy in chinchillas can be confirmed as early as the 15th day postmating, and sonographic changes and gestational age are well correlated. The quantitative measurements of fetal and placental growth performed in this study could be useful in setting up a database for comparison with human fetal ultrasounds. We speculate that, in the future, the chinchilla could be used as an animal model for the study of US in human pregnancy.

Evaluation of cellular thermodynamics has recently received a high interest because of its implication in many mechanisms related with function, structure and health of cells. Recent literature reported significant efforts to provide affordable intracellular thermal components of absorption, such as thermal conductivity, to overcome the lack of experimental data. Herein, we provide lines of evidence towards the fabrication of an electronic system, using a rapid thermoelectric technique based on infrared-induced pyroelectric effect for in-vitro cell model characterization. Results demonstrated that the assessment of the average single cell thermal conductivity, sample concentration, and information on cell viability is possible over a wide concentration range. The proposed electronic system establishes a different analysis paradigm if compared to those reported in the literature, with consistent results, demonstrating that the adopted technique can provide cell-specific information and knowledge, closely linked to cell viability and its vital functions.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Deep gray matter involvement is a consistent feature in multiple sclerosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between different deep gray matter alterations and the development of subcortical atrophy, as well as to investigate the possible different substrates of volume loss between phenotypes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-seven patients with MS (52 with relapsing-remitting and 25 with progressive MS) and 41 healthy controls were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. MR imaging investigation included volumetric, DTI, PWI and Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping analyses. Deep gray matter structures were automatically segmented to obtain volumes and mean values for each MR imaging metric in the thalamus, caudate, putamen, and globus pallidus. Between-group differences were probed by ANCOVA analyses, while the contribution of different MR imaging metrics to deep gray matter atrophy was investigated via hierarchic multiple linear regression models. RESULTS: Patients with MS showed a multifaceted involvement of the thalamus and basal ganglia, with significant atrophy of all deep gray matter structures (P < .001). In the relapsing-remitting MS group, WM lesion burden proved to be the main contributor to volume loss for all deep gray matter structures (P ≤ .006), with a minor role of local microstructural damage, which, in turn, was the main determinant of deep gray matter atrophy in patients with progressive MS (P ≤ .01), coupled with thalamic susceptibility changes (P = .05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirms the diffuse involvement of deep gray matter in MS, demonstrating a different behavior between MS phenotypes, with subcortical GM atrophy mainly determined by global WM lesion burden in patients with relapsing-remitting MS, while local microstructural damage and susceptibility changes mainly accounted for the development of deep gray matter volume loss in patients with progressive MS.

RESUMO

Intrasellar plasmacytoma is a rare pituitary tumor, which originates from monoclonal plasma cells in a single lesion. Knowledge of its features comes from case reports only. Here, we present an interesting case of a 77-year-old woman with a presumptive diagnosis of non-functioning pituitary adenoma, as based on both clinical and radiological examinations. Following endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery, the definitive diagnosis of intrasellar plasmacytoma was made by immunohistochemical analysis of the sellar mass. Intrasellar plasmacytoma is rare, but it should be evaluated in the differential diagnosis of a pituitary mass due to its different therapeutic approach and prognosis, since it can frequently progress to multiple myeloma.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate MRI accuracy in assessing placental adhesion disorders (PAD) in patients with placenta previa correlating imaging results with histological findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one patients who underwent abdomino-pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for ultrasound suspicion of PAD were prospectively evaluated. T1- and T2-weighted images, with and without fat suppression, were obtained in the three conventional planes using a 1.5 T MRI scanner. MRI accuracy to evaluate the presence of PAD was assessed on the basis of the occurrence of the following abnormal MRI signs: 1) intraplacental dark bands; 2) focal interruption of myometrial border; 3) intraplacental abnormal vascularity; 4) uterine bulging; 5) tenting of the bladder and/or 6) direct visualization of adjacent tissues invasion only in case of percretism. Imaging results were classified as suggestive or not of PAD using histological data as standard of reference; two methods of imaging analysis were used represented by the presence of at least one (Method A) or two (Method B) abnormal MRI signs; the correlation between the presence of each abnormal MRI sign of PAD and the corresponding histological finding was also assessed. RESULTS: The accuracy, as the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, was significantly (p = 0.001) higher for Method B (0.92, C.I. 95%: 0.82-0.97) compared to Method A (0.764, C.I. 95%: 0.64-0.86). Among the abnormal MRI signs, intraplacental dark bands and focal interruption of myometrial border were those highly correlated with histological proof of PAD (ρ > 0.71, p < 0.001, for both); as result, a modified version of Method B (Method C) was identified considering as criterion for PAD the combined presence of the two abnormal MRI signs highly correlated with histologically proven PAD; however, the accuracy of Method C was significantly (p = 0.005) lower (0.80, C.I. 95%: 0.67-0.89) than Method B and comparable to Method A. CONCLUSIONS: MRI is a useful imaging technique to assess PAD in patients with placenta previa; in particular, the presence of at least two among all the abnormal MRI signs represents the most accurate criterion (Method B) to identify PAD. Although intraplacental dark bands and focal interruption of myometrial border showed the highest correlation with histological proof of PAD as well as this association was the most frequent in PAD, the combination of these latter MRI signs along with other abnormal signs should be considered diagnostic for PAD.

RESUMO

All living organisms emit, detect, and respond to chemical stimuli, thus creating an almost limitless number of interactions by means of chemical signals. Technological and intellectual advances in the last two decades have enabled chemical signals analyses at several molecular levels, including gene expression, molecular diversity, and receptor affinity. These advances have also deepened our understanding of nature to encompass interactions at multiple organism levels across different taxa. This tutorial review describes the most recent analytical developments in 'omics' technologies (i.e., genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) and provide recent examples of its application in studies of chemical signals. We highlight how studies have integrated an enormous amount of information generated from different omics disciplines into one publicly available platform. In addition, we stress the importance of considering different signal modalities and an evolutionary perspective to establish a comprehensive understanding of chemical communication.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The pulvinar sign refers to exclusive T1WI hyperintensity of the lateral pulvinar. Long considered a common sign of Fabry disease, the pulvinar sign has been reported in many pathologic conditions. The exact incidence of the pulvinar sign has never been tested in representative cohorts of patients with Fabry disease. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of the pulvinar sign in Fabry disease by analyzing T1WI in a large Fabry disease cohort, determining whether relaxometry changes could be detected in this region independent of the pulvinar sign positivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed brain MR imaging of 133 patients with Fabry disease recruited through specialized care clinics. A subgroup of 26 patients underwent a scan including 2 FLASH sequences for relaxometry that were compared with MRI scans of 34 healthy controls. RESULTS: The pulvinar sign was detected in 4 of 133 patients with Fabry disease (3.0%). These 4 subjects were all adult men (4 of 53, 7.5% of the entire male population) with renal failure and under enzyme replacement therapy. When we tested for discrepancies between Fabry disease and healthy controls in quantitative susceptibility mapping and relaxometry maps, no significant difference emerged for any of the tested variables. CONCLUSIONS: The pulvinar sign has a significantly lower incidence in Fabry disease than previously described. This finding, coupled with a lack of significant differences in quantitative MR imaging, allows hypothesizing that selective involvement of the pulvinar is a rare neuroradiologic sign of Fabry disease.

RESUMO

The clinical and public health relevance of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is widely debated due to its increasing incidence, the resulting negative economic impact, and the potential for severe GDM-related pregnancy complications. Also, effective prevention strategies in this area are still lacking, and controversies exist regarding diagnosis and management of this form of diabetes. Different diagnostic criteria are currently adopted worldwide, while recommendations for diet, physical activity, healthy weight, and use of oral hypoglycemic drugs are not always uniform. In the present review, we provide an update of current insights on clinical aspects of GDM, by discussing the more controversial issues.

Synchrotron-based XRD spectra from rat bone of different age groups (w, 56 w and 78w), lumber vertebra at early stages of bone formation, Calcium hydroxyapatite (HAp) [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] bone fill with varying composition (60% and 70%) and bone cream (35-48%), has been acquired with 15keV synchrotron X-rays. Experiments were performed at Desy, Hamburg, Germany, utilizing the Resonant and Diffraction beamline (P9), with 15keV X-rays (λ=0.82666 A0). Diffraction data were quantitatively analyzed using the Rietveld refinement approach, which allowed us to characterize the structure of these samples in their early stages. Hydroxyapatite, received considerable attention in medical and materials sciences, since these materials are the hard tissues, such as bone and teeth. Higher bioactivity of these samples gained reasonable interest for biological application and for bone tissue repair in oral surgery and orthopedics. The results obtained from these samples, such as phase data, crystalline size of the phases, as well as the degree of crystallinity, confirm the apatite family crystallizing in a hexagonal system, space group P63/m with the lattice parameters of a=9.4328Å and c=6.8842Å (JCPDS card #09-0432). Synchrotron-based XRD patterns are relatively sharp and well resolved and can be attributed to the hexagonal crystal form of hydroxyapatite. All the samples were examined with scanning electron microscope at an accelerating voltage of 15kV. The presence of large globules of different sizes is observed, in small age groups of the rat bone (8w) and lumber vertebra (LV), as distinguished from, large age groups (56 and 78w) in all samples with different magnification, reflects an amorphous phase without significant traces of crystalline phases. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the morphology and crystalline properties of Hap, for all the samples, from 2 to 100µm resolution.
