BACKGROUND: Hand washing is an important targeted hygiene intervention for limiting the spread of infectious agents, including the Ebola virus, which continues to re-emerge. We have assessed the virucidal efficacy of a commercially available liquid hand wash product (LHW) for inactivating Ebola virus. METHODS: The ASTM E1052-11 Standard was used to evaluate the efficacy of an LHW containing the microbicidal active salicylic acid for inactivating Ebola virus - Makona variant suspended in an organic load. Three concentrations (12.5%, 25%, 50%) of three lots of LHW prepared in 440 ppm hard water were evaluated at room temperature for 20, 30, and 60 s contact time. RESULTS: A 25% solution of the LHW caused 4.5 log10 and 4.8 log10 reduction in Ebola virus titer within 20 and 30 s, respectively. The efficacy of a 12.5% LHW solution was lower (1.9 and 2.0 log10 reduction in titer within 20 and 30 s, respectively). The efficacy of the 50% LHW solution could not be measured, due to inability to sufficiently neutralize the LHW at the end of exposure. CONCLUSION: These results suggest the potential utility of an appropriately formulated liquid hand wash agent during Ebola virus disease outbreaks for use within healthcare, community, and home settings. Such an LHW should also be effective against other enveloped viruses, such as the pandemic coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

Lightning increases the atmosphere's ability to cleanse itself by producing nitric oxide (NO), leading to atmospheric chemistry that forms ozone (O3) and the atmosphere's primary oxidant, the hydroxyl radical (OH). Our analysis of a 2012 airborne study of deep convection and chemistry demonstrates that lightning also directly generates the oxidants OH and the hydroperoxyl radical (HO2). Extreme amounts of OH and HO2 were discovered and linked to visible flashes occurring in front of the aircraft and to subvisible discharges in electrified anvil regions. This enhanced OH and HO2 is orders of magnitude greater than any previous atmospheric observation. Lightning-generated OH in all storms happening at the same time globally can be responsible for a highly uncertain, but substantial, 2 to 16% of global atmospheric OH oxidation.

The ground state properties of CeFePO, a homologue of the new high temperature superconductors RFePnO1-xFx, were studied by means of susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, and NMR measurements on polycrystals. All the results demonstrate that this compound is a magnetically nonordered heavy fermion metal with a Kondo temperature TK approximately 10 K, a Sommerfeld coefficient gamma=700 mJ/mol K2, and a mass enhancement factor of the order of 50. Analysis of the susceptibility data and of the spin relaxation time indicates that the strong electronic correlation effects originate from the Ce-4f electrons rather than from Fe-3d electrons. An enhanced Sommerfeld-Wilson ratio R=5.5 as well as a Korringa product S0/T1TK2 approximately 0.065 well below 1 indicate the presence of ferromagnetic correlations. Therefore, CeFePO appears to be on the nonmagnetic side of a ferromagnetic instability.

To clarify on what level of gene expression estrogen represses albumin synthesis in Xenopus hepatocytes, we have analyzed nuclear RNAs and the transcriptional rates in isolated nuclei. Since in nuclear RNA the quantity of albumin mRNA and its precursors does not change and the transcription remains constant during estrogen treatment, we conclude that a posttranscriptional control, possibly involving destabilization of cytoplasmic mRNA, is responsible for the repression of albumin synthesis by estrogen. This post-transcriptional control is in contrast to the well-known transcriptional induction of vitellogenin gene activity. The results can be reproduced in liver cube cultures thereby establishing that estrogen interferes directly with hepatic albumin synthesis. In these liver cube cultures albumin mRNA levels are reduced compared with the liver used to set up the culture whereas the transcription of the albumin genes is not influenced. This reveals another post-transcriptional control of hepatic albumin synthesis.
