RESUMO

Despite increased advocacy and investments in mental health systems globally, there has been limited progress in reducing mental disorder prevalence. In this paper, we argue that meaningful advancements in population mental health necessitate addressing the fundamental sources of shared distress. Using a systems perspective, economic structures and policies are identified as the potential cause of causes of mental ill-health. Neoliberal ideologies, prioritizing economic optimization and continuous growth, contribute to the promotion of individualism, job insecurity, increasing demands on workers, parental stress, social disconnection and a broad range of manifestations well-recognized to erode mental health. We emphasize the need for mental health researchers and advocates to increasingly engage with the economic policy discourse to draw attention to mental health and well-being implications. We call for a shift towards a well-being economy to better align commercial interests with collective well-being and social prosperity. The involvement of individuals with lived mental ill-health experiences, practitioners and researchers is needed to mobilize communities for change and influence economic policies to safeguard well-being. Additionally, we call for the establishment of national mental wealth observatories to inform coordinated health, social and economic policies and realize the transition to a more sustainable well-being economy that offers promise for progress on population mental health outcomes.


Malgré une meilleure sensibilisation et des investissements accrus dans les systèmes de santé mentale à travers le monde, les progrès en matière de réduction du degré de prévalence des troubles mentaux demeurent très limités. Dans le présent document, nous estimons que, pour réaliser des avancées au niveau de la santé mentale des populations, il est impératif de s'attaquer aux sources de cette détresse collective. En adoptant une perspective systémique, force est de constater que les politiques et structures économiques constituent les causes potentielles d'une mauvaise santé mentale. Les idéologies néolibérales, qui privilégient l'optimisation économique et la croissance ininterrompue, contribuent à promouvoir l'individualisme, l'insécurité professionnelle, la pression pesant sur les travailleurs, le stress parental, l'isolement social et un large éventail de facteurs associés à une dégradation de la santé mentale. Nous insistons sur la nécessité de faire appel à des chercheurs et défenseurs actifs dans ce domaine, afin de jouer un rôle dans la politique économique en attirant l'attention sur les implications pour le bien-être et la santé mentale. Nous plaidons pour une transition vers une économie du bien-être visant à rapprocher les intérêts commerciaux de la prospérité sociale et collective. L'intervention de personnes ayant été confrontées à des troubles mentaux, de praticiens et de chercheurs est nécessaire pour mobiliser les communautés en faveur d'un changement et influencer les politiques économiques pour préserver le bien-être. Par ailleurs, nous militons pour la création d'observatoires nationaux de la santé mentale qui serviront à orienter des politiques économiques, sociales et sanitaires coordonnées, mais aussi à favoriser l'évolution vers une économie du bien-être plus durable, laissant entrevoir une amélioration de la santé mentale au sein de la population.


A pesar del aumento de la promoción y las inversiones en sistemas de salud mental en todo el mundo, los avances en la reducción de la prevalencia de los trastornos mentales han sido limitados. En este documento, sostenemos que para lograr avances significativos en la salud mental de la población es necesario abordar las fuentes fundamentales de la angustia compartida. Mediante una perspectiva sistémica, las estructuras y políticas económicas se identifican como la posible causa de los problemas de salud mental. Las ideologías neoliberales, que priorizan la optimización económica y el crecimiento continuo, contribuyen al fomento del individualismo, la inseguridad laboral, el aumento de las exigencias a los trabajadores, el estrés parental, la desconexión social y una gran variedad de manifestaciones bien reconocidas que perjudican la salud mental. Insistimos en la necesidad de que los investigadores y los defensores de la salud mental se impliquen cada vez más en el discurso de la política económica para atraer la atención sobre las implicaciones para la salud mental y el bienestar. Pedimos un cambio hacia una economía del bienestar para alinear mejor los intereses comerciales con el bienestar colectivo y la prosperidad social. Para movilizar a las comunidades en favor del cambio e influir en las políticas económicas con el fin de salvaguardar el bienestar, es necesaria la participación de personas que han padecido enfermedades mentales, profesionales e investigadores. Además, pedimos la creación de observatorios nacionales de bienestar mental que sirvan de base a las políticas sanitarias, sociales y económicas coordinadas y permitan la transición a una economía del bienestar más sostenible, que ofrezca perspectivas de progreso en los resultados de salud mental de la población.

Administering anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) at the primary motor cortex (M1) at various temporal loci relative to motor training is reported to affect subsequent performance gains. Stimulation administered in conjunction with motor training appears to offer the most robust benefit that emerges during offline epochs. This conclusion is made, however, based on between-experiment comparisons that involved varied methodologies. The present experiment addressed this shortcoming by administering the same 15-minute dose of anodal tDCS at M1 before, during, or after practice of a serial reaction time task (SRTT). It was anticipated that exogenous stimulation during practice with a novel SRTT would facilitate offline gains. Ninety participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups: tDCS before practice, tDCS during practice, tDCS after practice, or no tDCS. Each participant was exposed to 15 min of 2 mA of tDCS and motor training of an eight-element SRTT. The anode was placed at the right M1 with the cathode at the left M1, and the left hand was used to execute the SRTT. Test blocks were administered 1 and 24 h after practice concluded. The results revealed significant offline gain for all conditions at the 1-hour and 24-hour test blocks. Importantly, exposure to anodal tDCS at M1 at any point before, during, or after motor training failed to change the trajectory of skill development as compared to the no-stimulation control condition. These data add to the growing body of evidence questioning the efficacy of a single bout of exogenous stimulation as an adjunct to motor training for fostering skill learning.

Motor learning involves acquiring new movement sequences and adapting motor commands to novel conditions. Labile motor memories, acquired through sequence learning and dynamic adaptation, undergo a consolidation process during wakefulness after initial training. This process stabilizes the new memories, leading to long-term memory formation. However, it remains unclear if the consolidation processes underlying sequence learning and dynamic adaptation are independent and if distinct neural regions underpin memory consolidation associated with sequence learning and dynamic adaptation. Here, we first demonstrated that the initially labile memories formed during sequence learning and dynamic adaptation were stabilized against interference through time-dependent consolidation processes occurring during wakefulness. Furthermore, we found that sequence learning memory was not disrupted when immediately followed by dynamic adaptation and vice versa, indicating distinct mechanisms for sequence learning and dynamic adaptation consolidation. Finally, by applying patterned transcranial magnetic stimulation to selectively disrupt the activity in the primary motor (M1) or sensory (S1) cortices immediately after sequence learning or dynamic adaptation, we found that sequence learning consolidation depended on M1 but not S1, while dynamic adaptation consolidation relied on S1 but not M1. For the first time in a single experimental framework, this study revealed distinct neural underpinnings for sequence learning and dynamic adaptation consolidation during wakefulness, with significant implications for motor skill enhancement and rehabilitation.

Research has shown that spontaneous visual coupling supports frequency entrainment, phase attraction, and intermittent interpersonal coordination when co-actors are switched from a no-vision (NV) to vision (V) context. In two experiments, co-actors started in a NV context while producing the same or different amplitude movements. The same amplitude resulted in similar self-paced frequencies, while different amplitudes resulted in disparate frequencies. In experiment 1, co-actors were instructed to maintain amplitude while receiving no instructions to coordinate their actions. Frequency and phase entrainment was limited in the V context even when co-actors started the NV context with the same amplitude. In experiment 2, co-actors were instructed to maintain amplitude and intentionally coordinate together, but not at a specific pattern. Significant frequency modulations occurred to maintain amplitude as the co-actors sought to coordinate their actions. With the open-ended instructions, co-actors produced in-phase and anti-phase coordination along with intermittent performance exhibited by shifts between a variety of stable relative phase patterns. The proposed hypotheses and findings are discussed within the context of a shared manifold representation for joint action contexts, with the coordination dynamics expressed by the HKB model of relative phase serving to conceptualization the representations in the shared manifold.

The primary motor cortex (M1) is broadly acknowledged for its crucial role in executing voluntary movements. Yet, its contributions to cognitive and sensory functions remain largely unexplored. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive neurostimulation method that can modify brain activity, thereby enabling the establishment of a causal link between M1 activity and behavior. This study aimed to investigate the online effects of tDCS over M1 on cognitive-motor and sensory-motor functions. Sixty-four healthy participants underwent either anodal or sham tDCS while concurrently performing a set of standardized robotic tasks. These tasks provided sensitive and objective assessments of brain functions, including action selection, inhibitory control, cognitive control of visuomotor skills, proprioceptive sense, and bimanual coordination. Our results revealed that anodal tDCS applied to M1 enhances decision-making capacity in selecting appropriate motor actions and avoiding distractors compared to sham stimulation, suggesting improved action selection and inhibitory control capabilities. Furthermore, anodal tDCS reduces the movement time required to accomplish bimanual movements, suggesting enhanced bimanual performance. However, we found no impact of anodal tDCS on cognitive control of visuomotor skills and proprioceptive sense. This study suggests that augmenting M1 activity via anodal tDCS influences cognitive-motor and sensory-motor functions in a task-dependent manner.

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Northeastern US and Eastern Canada has high economic value for the sport fishing and aquaculture industries. Large differences exist between the genomes of Atlantic salmon of European origin and North American (N.A.) origin. Given the genetic and genomic differences between the 2 lineages, it is crucial to develop unique genomic resources for N.A. Atlantic salmon. Here, we describe the resources that we recently developed for genomic and genetic research in N.A. Atlantic salmon aquaculture. Firstly, a new single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) database for N.A. Atlantic salmon consisting of 3.1 million putative SNPs was generated using data from whole-genome resequencing of 80 N.A. Atlantic salmon individuals. Secondly, a high-density 50K SNP array enriched for the genic regions of the genome and containing 3 sex determination and 61 putative continent of origin markers was developed and validated. Thirdly, a genetic map composed of 27 linkage groups with 36K SNP markers was generated from 2,512 individuals in 141 full-sib families. Finally, a chromosome-level de novo genome assembly from a male N.A. Atlantic salmon from the St. John River aquaculture strain was generated using PacBio long reads. Information from Hi-C proximity ligation sequences and Bionano optical mapping was used to concatenate the contigs into scaffolds. The assembly contains 1,755 scaffolds and only 1,253 gaps, with a total length of 2.83 Gb and N50 of 17.2 Mb. A BUSCO analysis detected 96.2% of the conserved Actinopterygii genes in the assembly, and the genetic linkage information was used to guide the formation of 27 chromosome sequences. Comparative analysis with the reference genome assembly of the European Atlantic salmon confirmed that the karyotype differences between the 2 lineages are caused by a fission in chromosome Ssa01 and 3 chromosome fusions including the p arm of chromosome Ssa01 with Ssa23, Ssa08 with Ssa29, and Ssa26 with Ssa28. The genomic resources we have generated for Atlantic salmon provide a crucial boost for genetic research and for management of farmed and wild populations in this highly valued species.

BACKGROUND: A reconceptualised global strategy is key as nations begin to shift from crisis management to medium- and long-term planning to rebuild and strengthen their economic, social and public health systems. Efforts towards measuring, modelling, and forecasting Mental Wealth could serve as the catalyst for this reconceptualization. The Mental Wealth approach builds systemic resilience through investments which promote collective cognitive and emotional wellbeing. This paper presents the theoretical foundations for Mental Wealth. It presents, for the first time, literature across the disciplines of health and social sciences, economics, business, and humanities to underpin the development of an operational metric of Mental Wealth. DISCUSSION: An approach which embeds social and psychological dimensions of prosperity, alongside the economic, is needed to inform the effective allocation of investments in the post-pandemic world. The authors advocate for a transdisciplinary framework of Mental Wealth to be applied in innovating population-level policy interventions to address the growing challenges brought on by COVID-19. Mental Wealth highlights the value generated by the deployment of collective mental assets and supporting social infrastructure. In order to inform this position, a review of the literature on the concepts underpinning Mental Wealth is presented, limitations of current measurement tools of mental and social resources are evaluated, and a framework for development of a Mental Wealth metric is proposed. CONCLUSION: There are challenges in developing an operational Mental Wealth metric. The breadth of conceptual foundations to be considered is extensive, and there may be a lack of agreement on the appropriate tools for its measurement. While variability across current measurement approaches in social resources, wellbeing and mental assets contributes to the difficulty creating a holistic and generic metric, these variations are now clearer. The operationalisation of the Mental Wealth metric will require comprehensive mapping of the elements to be included against the data available.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the deep links and fragility of economic, health and social systems. Discussions of reconstruction include renewed interest in moving beyond GDP and recognizing "human capital", "brain capital", "mental capital", and "wellbeing" as assets fundamental to economic reimagining, productivity, and prosperity. This paper describes how the conceptualization of Mental Wealth provides an important framing for measuring and shaping social and economic renewal to underpin healthy, productive, resilient, and thriving communities. We propose a transdisciplinary application of systems modeling to forecast a nation's Mental Wealth and understand the extent to which policy-mediated changes in economic, social, and health sectors could enhance collective mental health and wellbeing, social cohesion, and national prosperity. Specifically, simulation will allow comparison of the projected impacts of a range of cross-sector strategies (education sector, mental health system, labor market, and macroeconomic reforms) on GDP and national Mental Wealth, and provide decision support capability for future investments and actions to foster Mental Wealth. Finally, this paper introduces the Mental Wealth Initiative that is harnessing complex systems science to examine the interrelationships between social, commercial, and structural determinants of mental health and wellbeing, and working to empirically challenge the notion that fostering universal social prosperity is at odds with economic and commercial interests.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the research activity and working experience of clinical academics, with a focus on gender and ethnicity. DESIGN: Qualitative study based on interviews and audio/written diary data. SETTING: UK study within clinical academia. PARTICIPANTS: Purposive sample of 82 clinical academics working in medicine and dentistry across all career stages ranging from academic clinical fellows and doctoral candidates to professors. METHODS: Qualitative semistructured interviews (n=68) and audio diary data (n=30; including 16 participants who were also interviewed) collected over an 8-month period (January-September 2020), thematically analysed. RESULTS: 20 of 30 (66.6%) audio diary contributors and 40 of 68 (58.8%) interview participants were female. Of the participants who disclosed ethnicity, 5 of 29 (17.2%) audio diary contributors and 19/66 (28.8%) interview participants identified as Black, Asian or another minority (BAME). Four major themes were identified in relation to the initial impact of COVID-19 on clinical academics: opportunities, barriers, personal characteristics and social identity, and fears and uncertainty. COVID-19 presented opportunities for new avenues of research. Barriers included access to resources to conduct research and the increasing teaching demands. One of the most prominent subthemes within 'personal characteristics' was that of the perceived negative impact of the pandemic on the work of female clinical academics. This was attributed to inequalities experienced in relation to childcare provision and research capacity. Participants described differential experiences based upon their gender and ethnicity, noting intersectional identities. CONCLUSIONS: While there have been some positives afforded to clinical academics, particularly for new avenues of research, COVID-19 has negatively impacted workload, future career intentions and mental health. BAME academics were particularly fearful due to the differential impact on health. Our study elucidates the direct and systemic discrimination that creates barriers to women's career trajectories in clinical academia. A flexible, strategic response that supports clinical academics in resuming their training and research is required. Interventions are needed to mitigate the potential lasting impact on capacity from the pandemic, and the potential for the loss of women from this valuable workforce.

INTRODUCTION: Distinct cortical activities contribute to unilateral and bilateral motor control. However, it remains largely unknown whether the behavior of motor neurons differs between unilateral and bilateral isometric force generation. Here, we first investigated motor units (MUs) recruitment patterns during unilateral and bilateral force generation. Considering that the force control is primarily regulated by low-frequency synaptic inputs to motor neurons, we also examined the relation between MU discharge rate and force output during unilateral and bilateral muscle contractions. METHODS: Using advanced electromyography (EMG) sensor arrays and spike-triggered averaging techniques, we examined a large population of MUs in the right first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle during unilateral and bilateral force tracking tasks. Using the principal component analysis, we analyzed the first common component (FCC) of MU discharge rate to describe the force fluctuations during unilateral and bilateral contractions. RESULTS: We found that MU discharge rate decreased during bilateral compared with unilateral contractions. MU recruitment threshold increased, while the amplitude and duration of MU action potential (MUAP) remained unchanged during bilateral compared with unilateral contractions. We found that the coefficients of variation (CV) for the force and FCC signal increased during bilateral compared with unilateral contractions. Notably, the FCC signal captured a great amount of MU discharge variability, and its CV correlated with the CV of the force signal. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that MU recruitment patterns are altered during bilateral compared with unilateral isometric force generation, likely related to changes at the low-frequency portion of the synaptic drive.

Two experiments were undertaken to examine the spontaneous and intentional formation of interpersonal coordination patterns within dyads. In both experiments, each individual in a dyad was given a pre-set amplitude goal of tracing a 3 cm or 15 cm line to maintain over a trial. Smaller amplitudes were associated with faster movement frequencies compared to larger amplitudes in both experiments. All trials started with the partners in the dyads not seeing each other, and at the half-way point within a trial vision of the partner was provided. In experiment 1, each individual was told to watch their partners hand in the view segment, yet maintain the amplitude goal. The pre-set amplitude goals limited the emergence of spontaneous interpersonal coordination in the form of frequency-locking and phase-entrainment. In experiment 2, the individuals in the dyad were told to intentionally coordinate at either a defined in-phase or anti-phase pattern of coordination when entering the view segment of a trial. All dyads formed the required coordination patterns at a 1:1 frequency-locking across 90% of trials when entering the view segment. However, the pre-set amplitudes still influenced performance of individuals in terms of movement amplitude and frequency modulations when intentionally forming the required coordination patterns. The proposed hypotheses and the interpretation of the results are framed within the coordination dynamics theory of perception-action processes.

Background: Few therapies exist to treat severe COVID-19 respiratory failure once it develops. Given known diffuse pulmonary microthrombi on autopsy studies of COVID-19 patients, we hypothesized that tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) may improve pulmonary function in COVID-19 respiratory failure. Methods: A multicenter, retrospective, observational study of patients with confirmed COVID-19 and severe respiratory failure who received systemic tPA (alteplase) was performed. Seventy-nine adults from seven medical centers were included in the final analysis after institutional review boards' approval; 23 were excluded from analysis because tPA was administered for pulmonary macroembolism or deep venous thrombosis. The primary outcome was improvement in the PaO2/FiO2 ratio from baseline to 48 h after tPA. Linear mixed modeling was used for analysis. Results: tPA was associated with significant PaO2/FiO2 improvement at 48 h (estimated paired difference = 23.1 ± 6.7), which was sustained at 72 h (interaction term p < 0.00). tPA administration was also associated with improved National Early Warning Score 2 scores at 24, 48, and 72 h after receiving tPA (interaction term p = 0.00). D-dimer was significantly elevated immediately after tPA, consistent with lysis of formed clot. Patients with declining respiratory status preceding tPA administration had more marked improvement in PaO2/FiO2 ratios than those who had poor but stable (not declining) respiratory status. There was one intracranial hemorrhage, which occurred within 24 h following tPA administration. Conclusions: These data suggest tPA is associated with significant improvement in pulmonary function in severe COVID-19 respiratory failure, especially in patients whose pulmonary function is in decline, and has an acceptable safety profile in this patient population.

Learning a motor adaptation task produces intrinsically unstable or transient motor memories. Despite the presence of effector-independent motor memories following the learning of novel environmental dynamics, it remains largely unknown how those memory traces decay in different contexts and whether an "offline" consolidation period protects memories against decay. Here, we exploit inter-effector transfer to address these questions. We found that newly acquired motor memories formed with one effector could be partially retrieved by the untrained effector to enhance its performance when the decay occurred with the passage of time or "washout" trials on which error feedback was provided. The decay of motor memories was slower following "error-free" trials, on which errors were artificially clamped to zero or removed, compared with "washout" trials. However, effector-independent memory components were abolished following movements made in the absence of task errors, resulting in no transfer gains. The brain can stabilize motor memories during daytime wakefulness. We found that 6 h of wakeful resting increased the resistance of effector-independent memories to decay. Collectively, our results suggest that the decay of effector-independent motor memories is context-dependent, and offline processing preserves those memories against decay, leading to improvements of the subsequent inter-effector transfer.

Objectives: Australia had one of the most successful early responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. Border closures and effective public health responses to outbreaks kept infection and death rates to amongst the lowest in the world. The strategy was premised on an eventual escape through the development and availability of vaccines. While effective vaccines appeared earlier than many expected, Australia's the next stage of crisis management stalled. Vaccination rates were, in mid-2021, one of the lowest in the OECD. By the end of 2021, however, Australia had a comparatively high vaccination rate. This paper accounts for this paradoxical situation. Methods: The analysis uses Moran and Tuohy's concept of the 'health care state' to show how interlocking elements of consumption, production, governance and statecraft created the conditions for Australia's contradictory response to the crisis. Results: The paper locates problems commonly attributed to 'leadership failure' in an analysis of the evolving dynamics of the Australian healthcare state and the governance regimes concerning collective consumption, the health professions, and technologies. Vaccine supply was delayed by the Federal government's preference for local production. The initial problems of the vaccine rollout arose from a failed experiment with outsourcing, initiated at the height of the crisis. Conclusion: Australia's ultimate success in achieving high vaccination rates emerged from the agile stability embedded in its health care state. This delivered where 'market inspired innovation' had failed.

RESUMO

Training to become a clinical academic is a long and arduous process with many obstacles. Many potential candidates fall by the wayside both during and following completion of the combined clinical and academic training pathway with negative implications for clinical and translational research and teaching. Findings from a recent national multi-funder study, alongside clinical academic experiences and current literature, have led to the creation of this 12-tip paper. The tips are targeted at supervisors and employers of clinical academics, aiming to improve recruitment, experiences, retention, and progression through the career path.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic heavy metal to which humans are exposed on a regular basis. Hg has a high affinity for thiol-containing biomolecules with the majority of Hg in blood being bound to albumin. The current study tested the hypothesis that circulating Hg-albumin complexes are taken up into hepatocytes and processed to form Hg-glutathione (GSH) conjugates (GSH-Hg-GSH). Subsequently, GSH-Hg-GSH conjugates are exported from hepatocytes into blood via multidrug resistance transporters (MRP) 3 and 5. To test this hypothesis, the portal vein and hepatic artery in Wistar rats were ligated to prevent delivery of Hg to the liver. Ligated and control rats were injected with HgCl2 or GSH-Hg-GSH (containing radioactive Hg) and the disposition of Hg was assessed in various organs. Renal accumulation of Hg was reduced significantly in ligated rats exposed to HgCl2. In contrast, when rats were exposed to GSH-Hg-GSH, the renal accumulation of Hg was similar in control and ligated rats. Experiments using HepG2 cells indicate that Hg-albumin conjugates are taken up by hepatocytes and additional experiments using inside-out membrane vesicles showed that MRP3 and MRP5 mediate the export of GSH-Hg-GSH from hepatocytes. These data are the first to show that Hg-albumin complexes are processed within hepatocytes to form GSH-Hg-GSH, which is, in part, exported back into blood via MRP3 and MRP5 for eventual excretion in urine.

Surgical stabilization of rib fractures in an effective technique for the management of bony thoracic trauma. However, rib fractures location or morphology may make the placement of the recommended 6 screws impossible. A retrospective analysis of patients receiving SSRF at our facility from 2009-2019 identified cases where less than the recommended screw placement was used. Respiratory complications and hardware integrity were analyzed using follow-up imaging and examinations when available. A total of 62 patients were identified that used less than the recommended number of screws. The majority of these were in the lateral and posterior chest wall positions. 1 pleural effusion, no pneumothoraces, deaths, or hardware dislodgments were identified. While the authors do not advocate for the routine deviation from manufacture recommendations, we concluded that in select circumstances, adequate fixation can be achieved with less than 6 screws across a plated fracture.

Afferent inputs to the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) are differentially processed during precision and power grip in humans. However, it remains unclear how S1 interacts with the primary motor cortex (M1) during these two grasping behaviors. To address this question, we measured short-latency afferent inhibition (SAI), reflecting S1-M1 interactions via thalamo-cortical pathways, using paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) during precision and power grip. The TMS coil over the hand representation of M1 was oriented in the posterior-anterior (PA) and anterior-posterior (AP) direction to activate distinct sets of corticospinal neurons. We found that SAI increased during precision compared with power grip when AP, but not PA, currents were applied. Notably, SAI tested in the AP direction were similar during two-digit than five-digit precision grip. The M1 receives movement information from S1 through direct cortico-cortical pathways, so intra-hemispheric S1-M1 interactions using dual-site TMS were also evaluated. Stimulation of S1 attenuated M1 excitability (S1-M1 inhibition) during precision and power grip, while the S1-M1 inhibition ratio remained similar across tasks. Taken together,our findings suggest that distinct neural mechanisms for S1-M1 interactions mediate precision and power grip, presumably by modulating neural activity along thalamo-cortical pathways.
