Necrotizing histiocytic lymphadenitis (NHL) or Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease is an infrequent seen clinicopathologic entity that affects most frequently young women and individuals of eastern races, and that is characterized by fever and adenopathies (basically cervical) and systemic disease even though occasional patients present extranodal disease. We present two young women with NHL and cutaneous affectation, and with lymphocytic meningitis in one of the patients. We discuss the etiology of NHL, the relation of NHL with collagen-vascular diseases (basically systemic erythematous lupus) the problem of the pathologic diagnosis, and the therapeutic possibilities in these patients.

RESUMO

Contribution of a new case of prostatic mucinous adenocarcinoma of primary origin. Diagnosis was established by histochemical techniques alcian blue, PAS and alcian-PAS) processing the fragments from the prostate transurethral resection (PTUR). Neither the existence of extraprostatic tumoration, local infiltration, or metastasis was recognized. No correlation between preoperative prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) (50) and prostatic specific antigen (PSA) values (3ng/m) was evidenced. After radical prostatectomy both markers remain undetected one year after surgery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Study of the hepatic morphological and biochemical changes in an experimental model of cirrhosis in rat by ligation of the common bile duct before and after bilioduodenal anastomosis. DESIGN: Ligation of the common bile duct in a group of 80 female Wistar rats during 30 days. Liver biopsy for histological studies and staining, blood samples for biochemical determination were taken, and a bilioduodenal anastomosis was constructed. 30 days later new liver specimens and blood samples were taken. A control group consisted of 10 rats. RESULTS: 30 days after biliary obstruction histological changes were characterized by occurrence of bile canalicular proliferation and portal fibrosis that rounded hepatic lobules. No well-defined nodules indicative of cirrhosis were seen. There was cholestasis with an increase in serum bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase and transaminase levels, and a decrease of albumin levels. Survival was 63.7%. Thirty days after biliary diversion (60 days after ligation) the normal lobular pattern was disorganized and regenerative nodules indicative of cirrhosis appeared, separated by narrow fibrous connective tissue septa, in 65% of rats. Bilirubin levels returned to normal values. Alkaline Phosphatase and transaminase levels remained high and albumin levels remained low. Overall survival was 25%. CONCLUSIONS: 30 days after biliary obstruction there are no regeneration nodules indicative of cirrhosis. There is a precirrhotic change, biliary fibrosis. Biliary diversion does not improve the histological changes and regeneration nodules and cirrhosis appear in 65% of animals.

RESUMO

We report on a patient with chronic prostate disease diagnosed as having a pelvic desmoid tumor (abdominal fibromatosis localized to the pelvis) whose presenting features were those of complete acute urinary retention. The findings on initial examination led us to suspect a prostate neoplasm which, however, was discarded by the results of the radiographic work up. The clinical and pathologic findings are presented and attention is drawn to the possibility that these mesenchymal neoplasms can have urological presenting symptoms and signs.

RESUMO

We report on a mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis in a 33-year-old patient. Eleven years following tumor removal, the patient is well and no evidence of tumor has been observed. We describe the pathologic features of the tumor, and discuss the characteristic, constant, but unspecific presenting features of mesotheliomas that are uncommon to this site, and the major difficulties encountered in making a differential diagnosis.
