Introduction: The incidence of squamous carcinoma of the oropharynx (OPSCC) has presented an increase worldwide, a fact that occurs along with a phenomenon of epidemiological transition, whose pathogenesis is linked to human papilloma virus (HPV) in a significant part of the cases. Published evidence at the Latin American level is scarce. The present study aims to evaluate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with oropharyngeal cancer treated in a public oncology reference centre in Chile. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out. Patients with histological confirmation of OPSCC aged 18 years or older, referred to the National Cancer Institute of Chile between 2012 and 2023 were included. The association with HPV was determined by immunohistochemistry for p16. Results: 178 patients were analysed, most of them in locoregionally advanced stages involving the palatine tonsil. Seventy-seven percent were male, with a median age of 60 years. Sixty-seven percent of patients were positive for p16, with a progressive increase to 85% in the last 2 years of the study. The p16(+) patients were younger and had fewer classical risk factors. Primary treatment was radiotherapy in 94% of patients. Conclusion: The epidemiological profile of patients with OPSCC treated in a Chilean public oncology referral centre reflects the epidemiological transition observed in developed countries. This change justifies the need to adapt health policies and conduct research that considers the characteristics of this new epidemiological profile.

In this article, we propose a simple photochemical method to synthesize pure La2Ti2O7 films and La2Ti2O7 films doped with silver at 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0 mol%. After annealing the photo-deposited films at 900 °C, XRD, SEM, and XPS analyses showed the formation of a monoclinic La2Ti2O7 phase and the presence of Ag and AgO in doped samples. Photocatalytic tests for Congo red degradation demonstrated that pure La2Ti2O7 achieved 25.4% degradation, while doped samples reached a maximum of 92.7% degradation. Moreover, increasing silver doping on La2Ti2O7 films significantly reduced the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, indicating potential antibacterial properties. The enhanced photoactivity was attributed to the formation of a type I heterojunction between La2Ti2O7 and AgO, and a degradation mechanism was proposed based on Congo red degradation.

Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) are effective treatments for severe knee and hip osteoarthritis. Historically, TKA has been associated with lower satisfaction than THA, but recent advances in knee surgery have led to lower dissatisfaction rates. This study aimed to compare the satisfaction and self-reported improvement in the quality of life of two cohorts of patients who underwent TKA and THA, respectively. Methods: This observational study compared two previously published cohorts of patients who underwent THA and TKA in a single university center. The Goodman scale was used to assess satisfaction and self-perception of improved quality of life after TKA and THA at a minimum one-year follow-up. Propensity score matching was used to balance age, gender, and follow-up between groups. Significance was set at 0.05. Results: The study included a total of 105 THAs and 131 TKAs. Both groups had high levels of satisfaction with pain relief, ability to do house/yard work, and overall satisfaction, with above 90% satisfaction rates. Regarding improvement in quality of life, both groups had 86% of patients reporting improvement as "much better." After propensity score matching, no significant difference was found between THA and TKA for any of the comparisons made using the Goodman scale. Conclusions: The study showed that both TKA and THA resulted in high levels of satisfaction and improvement in quality of life. There was no significant difference in satisfaction rates between TKA and THA, contrary to the historical trend of lower satisfaction rates for TKA.

Background Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a cost-effective treatment for the end-stage of knee osteoarthritis. Despite the improvements in this surgery, a significant percentage of patients still report dissatisfaction after knee arthroplasty. Radiological results have been used to predict clinical outcomes and satisfaction after knee replacement. This study aims to evaluate the concordance of a set of radiographic views to assess alignment on total knee arthroplasty. Methods A concordance study was designed with 105 patients (130 TKA) that underwent conventional total knee arthroplasty cruciate-retaining design recruited for the study and scheduled for their annual radiograph control. Measurements were performed on the following radiograph after total knee replacement: full-length standing anteroposterior and lateral radiograph, anteroposterior standing, lateral and axial knee view, and the knee "seated view". A musculoskeletal radiologist and a knee surgeon were recruited to perform the radiological measurement and then estimate the interobserver agreement.  Results There was an excellent correlation between Limb Length (LL), Hip-knee-ankle angle (HKA), Sagittal mechanical tibial component alignment (smTA), extension lateral and medial joint space (eLJS and eMJS), 90º flexion lateral and medial joint space (fLJS and fMJS) and Sagittal anatomic lateral view tibial component alignment (saLTA); the good correlation between Mechanical lateral femoral component alignment (mLFA), Sagittal anatomic tibial component alignment (saTA), Sagittal anatomic lateral view femoral component alignment 2 (saLFA2), Patella Height (PH); and moderate to poor correlation for the rest of measurements. Conclusion Excellent and good concordance can be achieved for radiographic measurements in different knee views to assess results after TKA. These findings must encourage future studies to address functional and survival outcomes using all knee views and not just one plane.

La diabetes mellitus tipo 2 representa uno de los principales problemas de salud pública a nivel mundial hoy en día. Entre las principales complicaciones generadas por esta enfermedad se encuentra la retinopatía diabética, la cual puede conducir a pérdida de la visión de manera permanente, por lo que investigaciones sobre tratamientos para esta patología van en aumento. Es por esto que tratamientos en base a químicos obtenidos de plantas medicinales están siendo ampliamente investigados debido a que podrían proveer una alternativa más segura, de menor costo y menor toxicidad que la medicina estándar para el tratamiento de esta patología ocular de alta incidencia mundial. El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar los principales fitoquímicos con potencial para ser usados como tratamiento de la retinopatía diabética. Para lograr este cometido se llevó a cabo una revisión de la literatura publicada entre el enero 2017 y de junio 2021 utilizando las bases de datos WOS, PubMed y Scopus en inglés y español, con el fin de recopilar evidencia científica actualizada sobre el uso y efectos de fitoquímicos en la retinopatía diabética. Diversas familias de fitoquímicos útiles fueron identificadas, entre estas las más comunes fueron las de origen fenólico, aunque menos comunes también se encontraron carotenoides, terpenos y preparaciones constituidas por varias especies de plantas y fitoquímicos. Sus mecanismos de acción también fueron identificados, siendo los más comunes la supresión de la neovascularización mediada por VEGF, la protección y restauración de la barrera hematorretinal, la reducción en la actividad de las especies reactivas del oxígeno y el efecto antiinflamatorio. Dada la evidencia respecto a la utilidad de los fitoquímicos para el tratamiento de la retinopatía diabética, mayores investigaciones deben ser realizadas(AU)


Type 2 diabetes mellitus represents one of the main public health problems worldwide today. Among the main complications generated by this disease is diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to permanent vision loss. For this reason, research on treatments for this pathology is increasing. This is why treatments based on chemicals obtained from medicinal plants are widely investigated as they could provide a safer, less costly and less toxic alternative to standard medicine for the treatment of this eye disease of high incidence worldwide. The aim of this study was to identify the main phytochemicals with potential to be used as treatment for diabetic retinopathy. In order to achieve this purpose, a review of the literature published between January 2017 and June 2021 was conducted using the WOS, PUBMED and Scopus databases in English and Spanish, in order to compile updated scientific evidence on the use and impact of phytochemicals in diabetic retinopathy. Several families of useful phytochemicals were identified. Among these, the most common were those of phenolic origin, although less common were also found carotenoids, terpenes and blends consisting of various plant species and phytochemicals. Their mechanisms of action were also identified, the most common being suppression of vascular endothelial growth factor-mediated neovascularization, protection and restoration of the blood-retinal barrier, reduction in reactive oxygen species activity and anti-inflammatory effect. Given the evidence regarding the usefulness of phytochemicals for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, further research should be conducted(AU)

Stand-off magnetometry allows measuring magnetic field at a distance, and can be employed in geophysical research, hazardous environment monitoring, and security applications. Stand-off magnetometry based on resonant scattering from atoms or molecules is often limited by the scarce amounts of detected light. The situation would be dramatically improved if the light emitted by excited atoms were to propagate towards the excitation light source in a directional manner. Here, we demonstrate that this is possible by means of mirrorless lasing. In a tabletop experiment, we detect free-precession signals of ground-state sodium spins under the influence of an external magnetic field by measuring backward-directed light. This method enables scalar magnetometry in the Earth field range, that can be extended to long-range remote sensing.

Temporal spiking of directional infrared and ultraviolet cooperative emission from sodium vapors excited to the $4D_{5/2}$ level with a continuous-wave resonant laser pump is analyzed. Mirrorless lasing at 2207 and 2338 nm on cascade population-inverted transitions and radiation at 330 nm generated due to four-wave mixing demonstrate a high degree of intensity correlation.

The pharmacokinetics, PK/PD ratios, and Monte Carlo modeling of enrofloxacin HCl-2H2 O (Enro-C) and its reference preparation (Enro-R) were determined in cows. Fifty-four Jersey cows were randomly assigned to six groups receiving a single IM dose of 10, 15, or 20 mg/kg of Enro-C (Enro-C10 , Enro-C15 , Enro-C20 ) or Enro-R. Serial serum samples were collected and enrofloxacin concentrations quantified. A composite set of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of Leptospira spp. was utilized to calculate PK/PD ratios: maximum serum concentration/MIC (Cmax /MIC90 ) and area under the serum vs. time concentration of enrofloxacin/MIC (AUC0-24 /MIC90 ). Monte Carlo simulations targeted Cmax /MIC = 10 and AUC0-24 /MIC = 125. Mean Cmax obtained were 6.17 and 2.46 µg/ml; 8.75 and 3.54 µg/ml; and 13.89 and 4.25 µg/ml, respectively for Enro-C and Enro-R. Cmax /MIC90 ratios were 6.17 and 2.46, 8.75 and 3.54, and 13.89 and 4.25 for Enro-C and Enro-R, respectively. Monte Carlo simulations based on Cmax /MIC90  = 10 indicate that only Enro-C15 and Enro-C20 may be useful to treat leptospirosis in cows, predicting a success rate ≥95% when MIC50  = 0.5 µg/ml, and ≥80% when MIC90  = 1.0 µg/ml. Although Enro-C15 and Enro-C20 may be useful to treat leptospirosis in cattle, clinical trials are necessary to confirm this proposal.

We report experimental on-sky observations of atomic spin precession of mesospheric sodium driven by polarization modulation of a continuous-wave laser. A magnetic resonance was remotely detected from the ground by observing the enhancement of induced fluorescence when the driving frequency approached the precession frequency of sodium in the mesosphere, between 85 and 100 km altitude. The experiment was performed at La Palma, and the uncertainty (0.2 kHz) in the measured Larmor frequency (≈260 kHz) corresponded to an error in the geomagnetic field of 0.3 mG. The results are consistent with geomagnetic field models and with the theory of light-atom interaction in the mesosphere.

We demonstrate backward-directed continuous-wave (cw) emission at 2.21 µm generated on the 4P3/2-4S1/2 population-inverted transition in Na vapors that are two-photon excited with resonant laser light at 589 and 569 nm. Our study of power and atom-number-density threshold characteristics shows that lasing occurs at sub-10 mW total power of the applied laser light. The observed 6 mrad divergence is defined mainly by the aspect ratio of the gain region. We find that mirrorless lasing at 2.21 µm is magnetic field and polarization dependent and this may be useful for remote magnetometry. The presented results could help determine the requirements for obtaining directional return from sodium atoms in the mesosphere.

Magnetic-field sensing has contributed to the formulation of the plate-tectonics theory, mapping of underground structures on Earth, and the study of magnetism of other planets. Filling the gap between space-based and near-Earth observations, we demonstrate a remote measurement of the geomagnetic field at an altitude of 85-100 km. The method consists of optical pumping of atomic sodium in the mesosphere with an intensity-modulated laser beam, and ground-based observation of the resultant magneto-optical resonance near the Larmor precession frequency. Here we validate this technique and measure the Larmor precession frequency of sodium and the corresponding magnetic field with an accuracy level of 0.28 mG Hz-1/2. These observations allow the characterization of atomic-collision processes in the mesosphere. Remote detection of mesospheric magnetic fields has potential applications such as mapping magnetic structures in the lithosphere, monitoring space weather, and electric currents in the ionosphere.

A 22-year-old man with foot pain was referred for evaluation of sesamoiditis. A Tc-99m methylene-diphosphonate bone scan was performed which revealed increased radiopharmaceutical uptake in the big toes, but also showed curious abnormal thoracic activity. Normal activity at sternoclavicular joints and sternum mimics ears, head and body of a bat, and the pectorals mimic the wings. The patient mentioned that he had started lifting weights a few days earlier. Clinical and echographic evaluations were diagnostic of pectoral inflammation suggesting rhabdomyolysis.
