RESUMO

Literally, reproductive immunology was born in bovine on-farm reproduction where seminal experiments intended for developing methods for embryo transfer in cattle were performed. Actually, these experiments led to two of major concepts and fundamental principles of reproductive immunology using the bovine species as a model for biomedical research, namely the concept of acquired immunological tolerance and the paradox of the semiallogeneic bovine foetus whereby such organism can develop within an immunologically competent host. Peter Medawar, a scientist who together with Frank Macfarlande Burnet shared the 1960 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for discovery of acquired immunological tolerance, while studying dizygotic cattle twins, thereby giving birth to reproductive immunology. Also, these findings significantly influenced development of organ transplants and showed that using farm animals as models for studying transplantation immunology had general relevance for mammalian biology and health including those of humans. However, the interest for further research of the fascinating maternal immune influences on pregnancy and perinatal outcomes and of the prevention and treatment of immunologically mediated reproductive disorders in viviparous mammals of veterinary relevance by veterinary immunologists and reproductive clinicians have been very scarce regarding the application of nonspecific immunomodulatory agents for prevention and treatment of subfertility and infertility in pigs and cattle, but still broadening knowledge in this area and hold great potential for improving such therapy in the future. The aim of the current overview is to provide up-to-date information and explaining/translating relevant immunology phenomena into veterinary practice for specialists and scientists/clinicians in reproduction of animals.

RESUMO

Historically, intra-articular calcaneal fractures have been managed, as a rule, nonsurgically, although surgical treatment has more advocates in the past 20 years. Even today many high specialized orthopedic surgeons have a lot of controversies relating the indications fields of nonsurgical and operative treatment of these fractures. For getting correct decision adequate preoperative evaluation of fracture type, overall patients health and his Generally, elderly patients with sedentary habits, without or with minimal fracture displacement, might be treated successfully with nonsurgical management. Good result after surgical treatment might be predicted in patients younger than 40 years, with a simple fracture pattern and high probability of achieving anatomic reduction. Highly precise and good surgical technique is necessary for getting a good final result with a long learning curve of the surgeon. Smoking, diabetes, chronic medical illness, peripheral vascular disease as well workers compensation claim (!) markedly increase the risk of surgical complications.

RESUMO

In prospective study, in 160 injured with diaphyseal gunshot fractures (DGF), in secondary treatment phase, there were applied rigid osteosynthesis by AO plate and spongioplasty with iliac graft by Phemister assuming that this method would provide good functional results. The average age of injured was 32.25 years, and average postsurgical follow-up period was 32.5 months. The fracture healing was achieved in 93.7% injured while pseudoarthrosis developed in 6.25%. Osteomyelitis, as the second significant complication, appeared in 8.12% cases. Good functional results were achieved in 55.62%, satisfying in 36.25% while the poor result was noticed only in 8.12% cases. The applied method in DGF treatment proved to be very successful, it led to faster fracture healing, shortening of hospitalization time of the injured with better functional results and less complications compared to the other treatment methods in the secondary phase.
