RESUMO

Leptospiral organisms have long been presumed to be associated with the presence of equine recurrent uveitis. This project was undertaken to determine the presence of Leptospira spp. in the aqueous humor of horses with uveitis to determine if there was an association with inflammation. Thirty horses were determined to have recurrent uveitis based on clinical evaluation or history. Sixteen horses were judged clinically and historically to be free of uveitis and were used as controls. Aqueous humor samples were cultured and evaluated by PCR for the presence of Leptospira DNA. Serum was collected and evaluated for the presence of antibodies against five serovars in a leptospirosis panel. Twenty-one of 30 horses with recurrent uveitis and one of 16 uveitis-free horses were positive by PCR for the presence of Leptospira DNA. Six of these 21 horses with uveitis were culture positive for leptospires from the aqueous humor. Serologic results did not correlate well with the presence of Leptospira DNA or organisms in the aqueous humor. Leptospira spp. are present in a high percentage of horses with naturally occurring recurrent uveitis.

RESUMO

Thirty-six formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded enucleated globes from cats with a diagnosis of diffuse anterior uveal melanoma were obtained. Sections of tumor were excised, deparaffinized, and subjected to nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify proviral DNA sequences from the feline leukemia virus (FeLV)-feline sarcoma virus (FeSV; 36 eyes), and the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV; 18 eyes). All samples tested were negative for FIV DNA. Three samples were positive for FeLV-FeSV DNA. This is the first reported evidence of a possible link between naturally occurring feline anterior uveal melanoma and the presence of FeLV-FeSV DNA.

RESUMO

Tear production, evaluated every 2 hours from 8 AM to 8 PM by use of the Schirmer tear test over a 3-day period, was not significantly different between left and right eyes in 12 dogs. However, a significant diurnal pattern was evident. Tear production was lowest at midday and highest in the late afternoon/early evening. After pilocarpine HCl ophthalmic solution (0.25, 1.0, or 2.0%; 1 drop) was administered topically to the left eye of each dog at 7 AM on days 4, 6, and 8, respectively, tear production was determined for both eyes every 2 hours from 8 AM to 8 PM on the day of treatment. Analysis of tear values between eyes and between each eye's treatment and pretreatment values did not reveal significant change for the treated eye, but tear production was significantly less in the untreated eye, compared with its pretreatment values and with values in the treated eye. On day 10 (48 hours after the last treatment), tear production values were not significantly different between left and right eyes, and for both eyes, were not significantly different from the mean pretreatment tear production values. Topical application of 0.25, 1.0, or 2.0% pilocarpine HCl consistently caused blepharospasm, conjunctival hyperemia, and miosis of the treated eye, without significant increase in tear production. We concluded that topical application of pilocarpine, at the concentrations used, may have little value in treating disorders involving reduced tear production.

RESUMO

An applanation tonometer was used to estimate intraocular pressure in normal eyes of several species of raptors. No bird had active injury or illness, though some were nonreleasable to the wild because of previous injury. Mean (+/- SD) intraocular pressure was 20.6 (+/- 3.4) mm of Hg in red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis, n = 10), 20.8 (+/- 2.3) mm of Hg in Swainson's hawks (Buteo swainsoni, n = 6), 21.5 (+/- 3.0) mm of Hg in golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos, n = 7), 20.6 (+/- 2.0) mm of Hg in bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus, n = 3), and 10.8 (+/- 3.6) mm of Hg in great horned owls (Bubo virginianus, n = 6). There was no significant difference in intraocular pressure between hawks and eagles. Mean pressure in great horned owls was significantly (P < 0.01) lower than pressure in hawks or eagles. Reliable intraocular pressure readings could not be obtained in barn owls (Tyto alba).

RESUMO

Baseline tear production values were established for both eyes of 19 dogs, using the Schirmer tear test. Atropine sulfate, 1% solution, was administered topically in the left eye of each dog once daily for 14 days. Tear production was then determined for both eyes at 15, 30, 60, 120, 180, 240, and 300 minutes, and 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 days. A final Schirmer tear test reading was obtained for each eye 5 weeks after the last atropine treatment to check for the possibility of prolonged effect. Both eyes had statistically significant (P less than 0.05) decrease in tear production that was most marked at 120 minutes after atropine instillation, then returned to baseline values by 300 minutes after instillation. Although atropine was placed in the left eye only, statistically significant difference was not apparent in Schirmer tear test values between the left and right eyes. Tear production continued to decrease in both eyes over time, becoming statistically significant (P less than 0.05) on day 9. However, on days 12 and 15, tear production in the untreated eye plateaued, but that in the treated eye continued to decrease. Five weeks after the last treatment with atropine, both eyes still had a statistically significant (P less than 0.05) decrease in tear production, although Schirmer tear test values had increased from day-15 values and appeared to be returning to baseline. Association was not evident between age or body weight and magnitude of response to topically applied atropine.

RESUMO

Mass-like lesions of the iris were evaluated in 15 horses or ponies of various ages and breeds. Breed or gender predilection was not found. These lesions were most often found in blue irides at the 12 o'clock region. Because the lesions transilluminated and changed shape rapidly with changes in pupillary size, they were hypothesized to be zones of iris hypoplasia. Histologic evaluation of one specimen supported this interpretation. The lesions were not associated with any other ocular or systemic abnormality.

RESUMO

Four unrelated cockatiels had various degrees of maldevelopment of the eyelids. Only 1 eye of the 8 was normal. The condition had features compatible with ankyloblepharon or cryptophthalmos. Attempts were made to surgically establish an artificial palpebral fissure. Despite extensive surgical intervention and postoperative topical administration of corticosteroids, the skin over the orbit reverted to the preoperative state in all birds. Anecdotal information along with our findings suggest that this condition, although uncommon, is widespread in the cockatiel population in the United States.

RESUMO

Bilateral conjunctival masses in 2 dogs were excised. In one dog, the masses represented hemangiomas that may have been related to exposure to UV radiation. In the other dog, they represented conjunctival inclusion cysts of probable congenital origin.

RESUMO

Sixteen raptors, including one eagle, two falcons, five hawks and eight owls, were found to have developmental ocular lesions. The most common lesion was microphthalmia. Other findings included cataract, microphakia, retinal dysplasia, malformation of the ciliary body, choroid and pecten, and lentoid formation. Specific causes for these lesions could not be determined. It is hypothesized that developmental ocular disease probably is more common than available reports indicate.

RESUMO

Hamsters were inoculated intracerebrally with the 22C, 79A, and ME7 strains of the scrapie agent to compare the effects on the retina with those caused by strain 263K. The animals developed clinical signs of encephalopathy. Photoreceptor degeneration occurred in all experimental animals. The changes were similar to those seen in animals infected with the 263K strain of scrapie although somewhat more variable and less extensive.

RESUMO

Hamsters were inoculated intracerebrally with the agent of transmissible mink encephalopathy and developed clerical signs of encephalopathy. Photoreceptor degeneration occurred in all animals examined histologically. The changes were similar to those in scrapie, although less extensive. The findings suggest that either transmissible mink encephalopathy is a mink-adapted form of scrapie or, in rodents, photoreceptor degeneration is a characteristic of infection with agents of the spongiform encephalopathies.

RESUMO

Ocular tissues from 13 dogs with naturally-occurring blastomycosis were examined histologically. Choroiditis and separation of the sensory retina from its epithelium were the most prominent lesions, although all three coats of the eye were always involved. Severe panophthalmitis was associated with a marked exudative reaction within the ocular tissues. Whereas inflammation of the anterior ocular tissues was often intense, it was rarely associated with the presence of B. dermatitidis. Sequelae to the ocular inflammation included cataract, synechiae, rubeosis iridis, and closure of the drainage angle. The last of these resulted in glaucoma and resulting degeneration of the optic nerve.

RESUMO

The mydriatic effect of 10% phenylephrine was evaluated in 9 horses. Base-line pupillary size in mesopic conditions and during light stimulation was ascertained before application of pharmacologic agents. In study 1, 10% phenylephrine was applied to each eye (n = 5 horses). After 15 minutes, the pupillary size was determined in both lighting conditions. Phenylephrine was again applied to each eye, and after an additional 15 minutes, the pupillary size was determined. In study 2, 1% tropicamide was applied to each eye (n = 4 horses), and after 30 minutes, the pupillary size was determined in both lighting conditions. Tropicamide and phenylephrine were applied to each eye immediately after determination of pupillary size, and after an additional 30 minutes, the pupillary size was determined. There was no significant change (P greater than 0.9) in pupillary size when phenylephrine was used alone or when phenylephrine was used in an eye that had been dilated with tropicamide.
