INTRODUCTION: The use of arch models is essential in diagnosis and planning in orthodontics. The demand for digital and printed models has increased among professionals. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the agreement of horizontal and vertical linear measurements obtained from digital models, printed models, and direct measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Intraoral scans of 30 individuals were obtained. Digital measurements were performed using the STL files. From printed models, the measurements were done using a digital caliper, and the real measurements were done directly to the mouth of respective patients. RESULTS: The one-sample t test showed no discrepancy between the paired sets of measurements, with the value of 0 (p>0.05). The evaluation of the measurements was done using Bland-Altman analysis in pairs. The three methods showed agreement in horizontal and vertical measurements. Linear regression analyses showed no proportional bias in the data (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: The horizontal and vertical measurements evaluated showed agreement when measured on digital models, printed models and directly in the individuals' mouths.

INTRODUCTION: The removal of residual resins is a routine procedure in orthodontic clinics and of great importance to the final result of the treatment. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the main methods of residual resin removal used by orthodontists, and the main reasons for choosing these methods. METHODS: A questionnaire consisting of 21 questions: 6 relating to demographic data and the other 15 relating to two methods used to remove residual resins (drills or pliers) was sent by e-mail to orthodontists registered with the Regional Councils of Dentistry of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) within April and June, 2023. Questionnaires were sent back by 153 professionals. RESULTS: Residual resin removal is always carried out with high speed drill for 44.7% of the sample, and with low speed drill for 28.7%; 61.3% use irrigation. The multi-laminate carbide bur is used by 82.5% of orthodontists. Pliers are always used by 12.4%. Resin-removing pliers with Widia are used in 39% of cases. The use of high speed was justified by the shorter working time, and the choice of pliers was justified by the smaller damage to the tooth enamel. CONCLUSION: The most used residual resin removal method was the multi-laminate carbide bur at high speed with irrigation, justified the by shorter working time.

INTRODUCTION: The use of clear aligners as an alternative to fixed orthodontic appliances has become popular due to the aesthetic demands of adult patients seeking orthodontic treatment. However, orthodontists' lack of knowledge about the legal consequences of their activities, and the lack of solid scientific evidence raise concerns regarding civil liability in this type of treatment. Marketing campaigns of manufacturing companies often exaggerate promises of results, and ignore the lack of scientific evidence. Patients, as consumers, are protected by the Consumer Protection Code, whereas orthodontists are considered treatment providers. Therefore, they can be held liable for damage caused to patients, whether by subjective or objective fault. OBJECTIVE: This article aims to identify the civil responsibilities of orthodontists and aligner manufacturing companies, by means of a literature review, providing basic legal guidance to help professionals protect themselves from possible lawsuits related to treatment with orthodontic aligners. CONCLUSIONS: The study highlights the importance of knowledge of legal notions in treatments with orthodontic aligners by orthodontists, who should legally safeguard themselves through individual written contracts, avoiding obligation of results. In addition, in cases of legal claims, it is possible that the manufacturing companies are jointly and severally liable for possible damages claimed by the patient.

INTRODUCTION: Different types of intraradicular restorations and their insertion have an impact on teeth biomechanics. This study aimed to analyze the biomechanical behavior of maxillary central incisors restored with glass fiber post (GFP) and cast metal post and core (CMP) subjected to buccolingual and mesiodistal orthodontic forces using the finite element method. METHODS: Two models of the maxillary central incisor with periodontal ligament, cortical bone, and trabecular bone were made. One of the models included intraradicular restoration with GFP, whereas, in the other, the incisor was restored with CMP. After creating the tridimensional mesh of finite elements, applying 2 orthodontic forces were simulated: 65 g of buccolingual force and 70 g of mesiodistal force. The forces were applied parallel to the palatal plane in the region of the bracket slot, located 4 mm to the incisal edge. RESULTS: The maximum stresses generated in the GFP-restored root were 3.642 × 10-1 MPa and 4.755 × 10-1 MPa from the buccolingual and mesiodistal forces, respectively. Likewise, the stresses in the CMP restored root were 2.777 × 10-1MPa and 3.826 × 10-1MPa. The radicular area with higher stress on both models was located in the cervical third: on the buccal surface when the buccolingual force was applied and on the mesial surface when the mesiodistal force was applied. The highest stress levels were found on the CMP structure. CONCLUSIONS: The incisor restored with cast metal post revealed lower stress values transferred to the root than the one restored with GFP. The stresses on the structure of the GFP were lower and more homogeneous than the ones found on the cast metal post. The difference among the stress values in the materials is within a safe margin for using both materials in relation to orthodontic forces.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess dentists' knowledge from Minas Gerais, Brazil, about dentoalveolar trauma (DT) and their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and Methods: An online questionnaire with 34 questions was applied to collect personal data, professional training, self-assessment of experience/knowledge about DT, experience in care provided during the social distancing, and knowledge/conduct. The specific responses were evaluated based on the guidelines of the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT). Descriptive analysis and Pearson's chi-square test were performed. The level of significance was set at p≤0.05. Results: Most professionals (97.7%) had received information on DT, and only 4.6% of the participants considered their knowledge poor or very poor. However, 92.7% felt the need for more information on the subject. Regarding experiences during the pandemic, 55.7% provided trauma care during that period. Forty percent of the consultations were performed in person, and 33.3% of the professionals noted an increase in cases during the pandemic; 56.6% reported that the frequency did not change. The overall mean number of correct answers about DT was 5.29±2.11, indicating an acceptable level of knowledge. The mean percentage of hits for the specific questions was 44.1%. Conclusion: Although the level of knowledge of the dentists evaluated was acceptable, some aspects were deficient, with the need for more information about the IADT guidelines.

RESUMO Introdução: A remoção de resinas residuais é um procedimento rotineiro na clínica ortodôntica e de grande importância para o resultado final do tratamento. Objetivo: Avaliar os principais métodos para remoção de resinas residuais utilizados por ortodontistas e os principais motivos para a escolha desses métodos. Métodos: Um questionário composto por 21 perguntas: 6 relativas aos dados demográficos e 15 relativas aos métodos de remoção de resinas residuais (brocas ou alicates) foi enviado por e-mail para ortodontistas dos conselhos regionais de São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro entre os meses de abril e junho de 2023, com o total de 153 respostas. Resultados: A remoção de resinas residuais é realizada sempre com brocas em alta rotação para 44,7% da amostra e em baixa rotação para 28,7%; 61,3% utilizam irrigação. A broca carbide multilaminada é utilizada por 82,5% dos ortodontistas. Os alicates são sempre utilizados por 12,4%. O alicate removedor de resina com Wídea é utilizado em 39% dos casos. O uso da alta rotação foi justificado pelo menor tempo de trabalho e a escolha por alicates, justificada pelos menores danos ao esmalte. Conclusão: O método de remoção de resinas residual mais utilizado foi a broca carbide multilaminada em alta rotação com irrigação, justificado pelo menor tempo de trabalho.

RESUMO Introdução: O uso de alinhadores transparentes como alternativa aos aparelhos ortodônticos fixos tem se tornado popular, devido às demandas estéticas dos pacientes adultos em busca de tratamento ortodôntico. No entanto, a falta de conhecimento dos ortodontistas sobre as consequências jurídicas de suas atividades, e a falta de evidências científicas sólidas levantam preocupações em relação à responsabilidade civil nesse tipo de tratamento. Muitas vezes, as campanhas de marketing das empresas fabricantes exageram nas promessas de resultados e desconsideram a falta de evidências científicas. O paciente, como consumidor, é protegido pelo Código de Defesa do Consumidor, e o ortodontista é considerado um fornecedor de tratamento. Portanto, ele pode ser responsabilizado por danos causados ao paciente, seja por culpa subjetiva ou objetiva. Objetivo: Identificar, por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica, as responsabilidades civis dos ortodontistas e das empresas fabricantes de alinhadores, fornecendo orientações jurídicas básicas para ajudar os profissionais a se protegerem de possíveis demandas judiciais relacionadas ao tratamento com alinhadores ortodônticos. Conclusões: O estudo destaca a importância do conhecimento de noções jurídicas em tratamentos com alinhadores ortodônticos, devendo o profissional resguardar-se juridicamente por meio de contratos individuais por escrito, prevenindo-se de assumir uma obrigação de resultado com o paciente. Além disso, em casos de demandas judiciais, é possível que as empresas fabricantes respondam solidariamente a possíveis danos reclamados pelo paciente.

The social isolation measures adopted during the critical phase of the COVID-19 pandemic led children to spend most of their time at home. Isolation may alter the pattern of traumatic dental injury occurrences, inasmuch as studies point out that most traumatic accidents occur at home. Considering this scenario and the influence of emergency management on the prognosis of the injury, the aim of this study was to evaluate the experience of traumatic dental injuries in children before and during the pandemic, and the knowledge of this topic by the children's guardians. This cross-sectional study was conducted with guardians of children aged 0 to 6 years, residing in Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil. The guardians answered an online questionnaire addressing personal information, traumatic dental injury experience before and during the pandemic, and knowledge of this topic. Descriptive and statistical analyses were performed using Pearson's chi-square test at a 5% significance level. The total sample consisted of 343 volunteers. A total of 95 and 92 injuries were reported before and during the pandemic, respectively; the home was the place of greatest occurrence. Most volunteers (88.1%) agreed that traumatic dental injuries are emergency situations, and were aware that the tooth/fragment had to be taken to the dentist after a fracture or avulsion (97.4%). This study revealed that the traumatic dental injury experience was similar before and during the pandemic, and that the volunteers had satisfactory knowledge, especially in recognizing the importance of immediate attention for a more favorable prognosis of these injuries.

Since traumatic accidents frequently occur at school, it is crucial that teachers be knowledgeable enough to assist an injured child. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of the elementary school teachers of a Brazilian city toward dental trauma in permanent teeth, and its emergency practices. A combination of convenience and snowball sampling methods was used. An online questionnaire was distributed through social media, consisting of three parts: demographic characteristics and professional information; previous experiences and attitudes toward dental trauma; teachers' knowledge of this subject. Descriptive and statistical analyses were carried out. Pearson chi-squared test (p < 0.05) was used. A total of 217 teachers participated in the study. The power of the sample was 95%. Half of the teachers had already witnessed a dental trauma incident involving students, and 70.5% never received any information on the subject. The teachers who were provided previous information were the ones who opted to search for the tooth fragment (p=0.036) in cases of crown fracture, and for the lost tooth (p = 0.025) in cases of avulsion. They were also the ones who chose to wash the tooth in running water (p = 0.018), and look for a dentist in the first 30 or 60 minutes after the trauma (p = 0.026). Most of the teachers assessed did not have adequate knowledge of dental trauma. Having previous information was associated with more assertive practices in trauma management.

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of impacted and transposed teeth is a challenge for clinical practice. A precise assessment of the relative position of the transposed tooth could lessen the risks of adverse effects, such as root resorption and periodontal problems. DESCRIPTION OF THE CASE: An 18-year-old patient went to the Orthodontic Department of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil for a re-evaluation of the orthodontic treatment to which she had been receiving since the age of 12. Attempted traction of an impacted maxillary canine resulted in root resorption, marked mobility and alteration in the position of adjacent teeth as well as loss of alveolar bone in the anterior region of the maxilla. This tooth was not only partially transposed, but it also had ankylosis, external and internal tooth resorption, which indicated the need for tooth extraction. A change was made to the treatment plan, with the extraction of the canine, bone graft and mesial movement of the posterior teeth. RESULTS: All the spaces were closed at the end of treatment, with normal overbite and overjet. At the follow-up, the teeth position, the shape of dental arches, disocclusion guides and dental occlusion were preserved. The bone graft in the maxilla showed height and mineral density stability. CONCLUSION: The presence of the maxillary permanent canines in the dental arch is important for both aesthetics and a functional occlusion. However, despite the importance of their maintenance in the arch, it is well advised that each case be analysed individually.

Recidivas são frequentemente observadas após o tratamento ortodôntico e, com o objetivo de evitá-las e manter a estabilidade das posições dentárias após o tratamento, o uso de contenções superiores e inferiores é indicado. Entretanto, alguns pacientes não as usam de maneira correta, causando uma perda na estabilidade da posição dentária alcançada com o tratamento ortodôntico. Devido ao fato de os pacientes estarem mais preocupados com conforto e estética e o uso de alinhadores ortodônticos ser uma ferramenta viável para pequenas correções, o objetivo deste estudo foi descrever um caso clínico de correção de recidivas 15 anos após o fim do tratamento ortodôntico. As fotografias intraorais mostraram uma relação de má oclusão de Classe I com overjet e overbite satisfatórios, rotação do dente 23, extrusão do dente 11, desgaste incisal do dente 41 e apinhamento anteroinferior. Clinicamente, a paciente apresentava contato prematuro nos dentes 11 e 41 durante o movimento de protusão mandibular. O tratamento foi realizado com 4 alinhadores superiores e 10 alinhadores inferiores. Após este set de alinhadores, foram necessários mais 6 alinhadores inferiores, 2 por refinamento. Após 5 meses, a paciente apresentava boa oclusão, com guias laterais, protrusão sem interferência, além de alinhamento e nivelamento dentários. Esse caso clínico provou que o uso de alinhadores ortodônticos é eficiente em corrigir pequenas recidivas de tratamento ortodôntico.(AU)
Recurrences are frequently observed after orthodontics treatment, and in order to avoid them and keep the stability of dental positions after treatment, the use of maxillary and mandibular retainers are indicated. However, some patients do not use them properly causing the break of stability position obtained with the orthodontic treatment. As patients are more concerned with confort and esthetic and the use of clear aligners is a viable tool for small corrections, the aim of this study was to describe a case of relapse correction wich occurred after 15 years of orthodontic treatment with the use of clear aligners. The intraoral photographs showed a Class I maloclusion with satisfactory overjet and overbite, rotation of 23, extrusion of 11, incisal waste of 41, and mandibular anterior crowding, Clinically, the patient had premature contact with teeth 11 and 41 during protrusion movement. The entire treatment was done with 4 maxillary aligners and 10 mandibular aligners. After this set of aligners, it was necessary other 6 mandibular aligners, 2 per refinements. After 5 months, the patient presented good oclusion, with lateral guides, protrusion with no interferences, the teeth were aligned and leveled. This case report proved that clear aligners are efficient in correcting relapses.(AU)

Aim: Facial orthopaedic treatments based on the stimulation or restrictions of craniofacial bone growth are more effective when carried out during the pubertal growth spurt. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the reproducibility of two cervical vertebrae methods (CVM) with manual tracing and direct visual inspection. Methods: A sample of 60 lateral cephalometric radiographs (10 of each of the 6 CVM stages) was randomly selected from 171 records. 5 orthodontists classified these radiographs according to the skeletal maturation stage in 2002 and 2005, and the application of both methods was conducted by direct visual inspection and evaluation through manual tracing. Results: The average reliability of the two methods determination and the two forms of evaluation was substantial. The direct visual inspection evaluation showed the highest reliability and agreement interexaminer values for both methods, as well as the intraexaminers evaluation. Conclusion: The reproducibility of CVM method was substantial, indicating its clinical use to determine the skeletal maturity and the ideal moment for treatment execution

Abstract The aim of study was to evaluate periodontal conditions of upper canines and second premolars with and without proximal contact of individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment associated to extractions of the upper first premolars. The study selected upper canines and premolars of individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment without extractions (30 hemiarches - control group), or with extraction of the upper first premolars and whose canines and second premolars had interproximal contact (16 hemiarches - group 1) or diastema (17 hemiarches - group 2). Clinical (plaque index, probing depth, gingival bleeding index, height of the gingival margin, clinical attachment loss and gingival clefts) and radiographic (crest height, bone height and bone-crest discrepancy) parameters of the distal surfaces of canines and mesial surfaces of premolars were evaluated. Group 1 had worse results when compared to the control group for the levels of plaque in canines and premolars and for probing depth in canines (distal and mean) and in premolars (lingual and mean), as well as increasing tendency of clinical attachment loss (lingual and mean) in premolars. Plaque level in canines in group 1 was also significantly higher than in group 2. There was no difference between group 2 and the control group. The lack of proximal contact between canines and second premolars did not significantly affect their periodontal characteristics.
Resumo A extração de dentes para obtenção de espaço nos arcos dentários é uma estratégia rotineiramente utilizada em Ortodontia, porém a movimentação de dentes para os locais de extrações pode estar associada à falhas na estabilidade dos dentes e abertura do ponto de contato, gerando prejuízo aos tecidos periodontais. Objetivo: Avaliar a condição periodontal de caninos e segundos pré-molares superiores com e sem ponto de contato entre si de indivíduos submetidos ao tratamento ortodôntico associado à extração dos primeiros pré-molares superiores. Foram selecionados caninos, primeiros e segundos pré-molares superiores de indivíduos submetidos ao tratamento ortodôntico sem extração (30 hemiarcos - grupo controle) ou com extração dos primeiros pré-molares superiores cujos caninos e os segundos pré-molares apresentavam contato interproximal (16 hemiarcos - grupo 1) ou diastema (17 hemiarcos - grupo 2). Nas superfícies distal dos caninos e mesial dos pré-molares foram avaliados parâmetros clínicos e radiográficos para determinar o efeito da movimentação dos dentes para o local de extração e da ausência de ponto de contato interproximal nos tecidos periodontais. Os grupos não apresentaram diferença significativa para a idade e o tempo de pós-tratamento. O grupo 1 apresentou valores mais desfavoráveis em relação ao grupo controle para o índice de placa em caninos e pré-molares e para a profundidade de sondagem em caninos (distal e média) e em pré-molares (lingual e média), além de uma tendência de maior perda de inserção clínica (lingual e média) nos pré-molares. O índice de placa nos caninos do grupo 1 também foi significativamente maior do que no grupo 2. Os grupos 2 e controle não apresentaram diferença significativa. A ausência de ponto de contato entre os caninos e os segundos pré-molares superiores não afetou significativamente a situação periodontal desses dentes.
RESUMO
The aim of study was to evaluate periodontal conditions of upper canines and second premolars with and without proximal contact of individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment associated to extractions of the upper first premolars. The study selected upper canines and premolars of individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment without extractions (30 hemiarches - control group), or with extraction of the upper first premolars and whose canines and second premolars had interproximal contact (16 hemiarches - group 1) or diastema (17 hemiarches - group 2). Clinical (plaque index, probing depth, gingival bleeding index, height of the gingival margin, clinical attachment loss and gingival clefts) and radiographic (crest height, bone height and bone-crest discrepancy) parameters of the distal surfaces of canines and mesial surfaces of premolars were evaluated. Group 1 had worse results when compared to the control group for the levels of plaque in canines and premolars and for probing depth in canines (distal and mean) and in premolars (lingual and mean), as well as increasing tendency of clinical attachment loss (lingual and mean) in premolars. Plaque level in canines in group 1 was also significantly higher than in group 2. There was no difference between group 2 and the control group. The lack of proximal contact between canines and second premolars did not significantly affect their periodontal characteristics.

A disseminação do Sars-CoV-2, agenteetiológicoda COVID-19, se tornou um problema de saúde pública de importância internacional. Dentre as medidas para conter seu espraiamento, está asuspensão das aulas em instituições de ensino.Assim, esta revisão integrativa objetiva apresentar um panorama sobre o impacto da pandemia no ensino da Odontologia nas instituições brasileiras.Foram realizadas buscas nas bases de dados Medline, LILACS e SciELO, utilizando-se descritores nas línguas inglesa e portuguesa. Foram recuperados 60 estudos, sendo 17 elegíveis para leitura integral. Destes, 4 estudos atenderam aos critérios de inclusão e exclusão. Observou-se que o modelo de Ensino Remoto Emergencial (ERE) por meio de ferramentas digitaisfoi a estratégia de ensino não presencial mais utilizada nas instituições brasileiras. O ERE permitiu que o impacto da pandemia de COVID-19 fosse sentido de maneira mais branda pela comunidade acadêmica brasileira, engajando alunos e diminuindo a ansiedade de alunos e professores. Por outro lado, a infraestrutura tecnológica deficiente no Brasil contribuiu para a dificuldade em substituir as atividades clínicas. Fato ainda exacerbado pela dificuldade de adequação da infraestrutura física das instituições durante o planejamento de retorno às atividades presenciais. Apesar de todas as estratégias de superação, desempenhadas pelas instituições brasileiras de ensino odontológico, estas não foram refletidas em literatura científica nas bases de dados indexadas.Assim, enfatiza-se a necessidade de trabalhos sobre esta temática, para que seja possível disseminar as experiências vividas durante o período pandêmico (AU).
The spread of SARS-CoV-2, the etiological agent of COVID-19, has become a public health problem of international importance. Among the measures to curb its spread is the suspension of classes in educational institutions. Thus, this integrative review aims to provide an overview of the impact of the pandemic on dentistry education in Brazilian institutions. The Medline, LILACS and SciELO databases were searched using descriptors in English and Portuguese.A total of 60 studies were retrieved, with17eligible for full reading. Of these, 4 studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. It was observed that the emergency remote education (ERE) model through digital tools was the most used remoteteaching strategy in Brazilian institutions. ERE allowed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to be felt more mildly by the Brazilian academic community, better engaging students and reducing the anxiety of students and teachers. On the other hand, the deficient technological infrastructure in Brazil contributed to difficulty inreplacing clinical activities. This fact is further exacerbated by the difficulty of adapting the physical infrastructure of the institutions whenplanning to returnto in-personactivities. Despite numerousstrategies employedby Brazilian dental education institutions, theywere not reflected in the scientific literature in the indexed databases.Thus, there is aneed for studies on this topic so that it is possible to disseminate the experiences lived during the pandemic period (AU).

OBJECTIVE: The focus of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of ionomer cements modified with ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP) in different concentrations and time intervals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, one hundred and thirty-five male Wistar rats were randomized into nine groups: Control, Groups Meron, and Groups Ketac (conventional, and added with 10, 25, 50% EEP, respectively). Histological analyses of inflammatory infiltrate and collagen fibers, and immunohistochemistry of CD68+ for macrophages (MOs) and multinucleated giant cells (MGCs) were performed. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn (p < 0.05) tests. RESULTS: Intense inflammatory infiltrate was demonstrated in the cements with 10% EEP at 7 days and 15 days (p < 0.05), only Group Ketac 10% EEP (p = 0.01) at 30 days. A smaller quantity of collagen fibers was observed in the cements with 10% EEP (p = 0.01) at 7 days, and Group Meron 10% EEP (p = 0.04) at 15 days. MOs and MGCs showed significant difference for the cements with 10% EEP (p = 0.01) at 7 and 15 days. At 30 days, MOs persisted in the Groups with 10% EEP. CONCLUSIONS: The concentration of 10% EEP had the greatest influence on the inflammatory and tissue repair processes. The concentrations of 25 and 50% EEP demonstrated biocompatibility similar to that of cements that did not receive EEP.

Introduction: The opening of the contact point can happen after orthodontic closure of the site of dental extraction and opened interproximal contacts are considered potential factors for periodontal diseases. Objective: To evaluate the condition of the alveolar bone crest of the interdental site between canines and upper premolars with or without contact points in individuals submitted to orthodontics associated with the extraction of the first premolars. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study selected upper canines and premolars of individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment without extractions (12 hemiarches control group), or with extraction of the upper first premolars and whose canines and second premolars had interproximal contact (11 hemiarches group 1) or diastema (15 hemiarches group 2). The height and the presence of lamina dura in the interproximal bone crest of the distal surfaces of canines and mesial surfaces of premolars were evaluated. Results: Groups 1 and 2 demonstrated the higher and smallest prevailing of the presence of lamina dura, respectively. The control group presented the bone crest positioned more crownly in relation to the others groups. Experimental groups did not present significant differences to the height of bone crest. Conclusion: The orthodontic allocation of teeth to extraction sites was associated with the significant reduction of the height of the marginal bone crest, regardless of the presence or absence of contact point between the teeth. The lack of contact point resulted in a minor prevalence of the continuity of the lamina dura of the alveolar bone crest in these regions.
Introdução: A abertura do ponto de contato pode ocorrer após o fechamento ortodôntico do sítio de extração dentária e os contatos interproximais abertos são considerados fatores potenciais para as doenças periodontais. Objetivo: Avaliar a condição da crista óssea alveolar do espaço interdentário entre caninos e pré-molares superiores com ou sem pontos de contato em indivíduos submetidos a tratamento ortodôntico associado à exodontia dos primeiros pré-molares. Material e Métodos: Este estudo transversal observacional selecionou caninos e pré-molares superiores de indivíduos submetidos a tratamento ortodôntico sem extrações (12 hemiarcos grupo controle), ou com exodontia dos primeiros pré-molares superiores e cujos caninos e segundos pré-molares tiveram contato interproximal (11 hemiarcos grupo 1) ou diastemas (15 hemiarcos grupo 2). Foram avaliadas a altura e a presença da lâmina dura na crista óssea interproximal das superfícies distais dos caninos e mesiais dos pré-molares. Resultados: Os grupos 1 e 2 demonstraram a maior e a menor prevalência da presença de lâmina dura, respectivamente. O grupo controle apresentou a crista óssea posicionada mais coronalmente em relação aos demais grupos. Entre os grupos experimentais, não houve diferença significativa para a altura da crista óssea. Conclusão: Neste estudo preliminar, a movimentação ortodôntica dos dentes para os locais de exodontia foi associada à redução significativa da altura da crista óssea marginal, independentemente da presença ou ausência de ponto de contato entre os dentes. A falta de ponto de contato resultou em menor prevalência de continuidade da lâmina dura da crista óssea alveolar nessas regiões.
