RESUMO

OBJETIVO: Descrever a participação em casa atual (frequência, envolvimento) e o desejo do cuidador por mudança na participação em casa de crianças e adolescentes com síndrome de Down, bem como fatores ambientais da casa, e explorar as associações de fatores pessoais e ambientais com a participação atual e o desejo do cuidador por mudança. MÉTODO: Oitenta e dois cuidadores (média de idade = 45 anos e 10 meses) de crianças e adolescentes com síndrome de Down (média de idade = 10 anos e 7 meses) foram entrevistados sobre a participação em casa da criança e fatores ambientais utilizando a Medida de Participação e do Ambiente ­ Crianças e Jovens. Além disso, foram coletados fatores pessoais e ambientais das crianças. Os resultados são relatados por meio de análise descritiva e correlações (coeficientes de correlação de Spearman ou teste U de Mann­Whitney) para descrever a relação entre a participação atual e o desejo do cuidador por mudança, com fatores pessoais e ambientais, para as variáveis ordinais e nominais, respectivamente (p < 0,05). RESULTADOS: A participação das crianças foi maior em cuidados pessoais e menor em atividades relacionadas à escola. A maioria dos cuidadores desejava mudança nas lições de casa e nas tarefas domésticas. Maior frequência de participação foi associada ao sexo masculino, distanciamento social menos rigoroso do cuidador devido à pandemia de covid­19 e crianças recebendo terapia. O maior envolvimento na participação foi associado a uma idade mais jovem nas crianças e a um maior apoio do ambiente. A idade mais avançada das crianças foi associada ao maior desejo por mudança do cuidador. INTERPRETAÇÃO: Fatores pessoais e ambientais são correlacionados com a participação de formas específicas. Devem ser realizadas estratégias criativas para promover a participação e que considerem os desejos do cuidador.

Deep brain stimulation has revolutionized the treatment of movement disorders and is gaining momentum in the treatment of several other neuropsychiatric disorders. In almost all applications of this therapy, the insertion of electrodes into the target has been shown to induce some degree of clinical improvement prior to stimulation onset. Disregarding this phenomenon, commonly referred to as 'insertional effect', can lead to biased results in clinical trials, as patients receiving sham stimulation may still experience some degree of symptom amelioration. Similar to the clinical scenario, an improvement in behavioural performance following electrode implantation has also been reported in preclinical models. From a neurohistopathologic perspective, the insertion of electrodes into the brain causes an initial trauma and inflammatory response, the activation of astrocytes, a focal release of gliotransmitters, the hyperexcitability of neurons in the vicinity of the implants, as well as neuroplastic and circuitry changes at a distance from the target. Taken together, it would appear that electrode insertion is not an inert process, but rather triggers a cascade of biological processes, and, as such, should be considered alongside the active delivery of stimulation as an active part of the deep brain stimulation therapy.

Maladaptive avoidance behaviour is often observed in patients suffering from anxiety and trauma- and stressor-related disorders. The prefrontal-amygdala-hippocampus network is implicated in learning and memory consolidation. Neuroinflammation in this circuitry alters network dynamics, resulting in maladaptive avoidance behaviour. The two-way active avoidance test is a well-established translational model for assessing avoidance responses to stressful situations. While some animals learn the task and show adaptive avoidance (AA), others show strong fear responses to the test environment and maladaptive avoidance (MA). Here, we investigated if a distinct neuroinflammation pattern in the prefrontal-amygdala-hippocampus network underlies the behavioural difference observed in these animals. Wistar rats were tested 8 times and categorized as AA or MA based on behaviour. Brain recovery followed for the analysis of neuroinflammatory markers in this network. AA and MA presented distinct patterns of neuroinflammation, with MA showing increased astrocyte, EAAT-2, IL-1ß, IL-17 and TNF-ɑ in the amygdala. This neuroinflammatory pattern may underlie these animals' fear response and maladaptive avoidance. Further studies are warranted to determine the specific contributions of each inflammatory factor, as well as the possibility of treating maladaptive avoidance behaviour in patients with psychiatric disorders with anti-inflammatory drugs targeting the amygdala.

PURPOSE: To describe the perspective of caregivers about physical therapy (PT) during the COVID-19 pandemic and the effect of social distancing on the health of children with physical disabilities. METHODS: This survey research used a remote questionnaire to identify the perceptions of caregivers about the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health of children and adolescents with physical disabilities and on PT services. Data were analyzed using the frequency of responses; open-ended questions were analyzed through a hybrid approach to thematic analysis. RESULTS: Caregivers of 47 children with cerebral palsy were included. Although most received regular PT services during the pandemic, worsened children's physical conditions and anxiety were prevalent. Caregivers believed that they lacked technical skills. CONCLUSIONS: Social distancing impacted the health of children with physical disabilities, especially their physical conditions. Identifying facilitators and barriers for PT services can be helpful in future similar scenarios.Video abstract Supplemental Digital Content available at:http://links.lww.com/PPT/A503.

Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF1α) attenuates mitochondrial activity while promoting glycolysis. However, lower glycolysis is compromised in human clear cell renal cell carcinomas, in which HIF1α acts as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting cell-autonomous proliferation. Here, we find that, unexpectedly, HIF1α suppresses lower glycolysis after the glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) step, leading to reduced lactate secretion in different tumor cell types when cells encounter a limited pyruvate supply such as that typically found in the tumor microenvironment in vivo. This is because HIF1α-dependent attenuation of mitochondrial oxygen consumption increases the NADH/NAD+ ratio that suppresses the activity of the NADH-sensitive GAPDH glycolytic enzyme. This is manifested when pyruvate supply is limited, since pyruvate acts as an electron acceptor that prevents the increment of the NADH/NAD+ ratio. Furthermore, this anti-glycolytic function provides a molecular basis to explain how HIF1α can suppress tumor cell proliferation by increasing the NADH/NAD+ ratio.

The importance of addressing the problem of biofilms in farm, wild, and companion animals lies in their pervasive impact on animal health and welfare. Biofilms, as resilient communities of microorganisms, pose a persistent challenge in causing infections and complicating treatment strategies. Recognizing and understanding the importance of mitigating biofilm formation is critical to ensuring the welfare of animals in a variety of settings, from farms to the wild and companion animals. Effectively addressing this issue not only improves the overall health of individual animals, but also contributes to the broader goals of sustainable agriculture, wildlife conservation, and responsible pet ownership. This review examines the current understanding of biofilm formation in animal diseases and elucidates the complex processes involved. Recognizing the limitations of traditional antibiotic treatments, mechanisms of resistance associated with biofilms are explored. The focus is on alternative therapeutic strategies to control biofilm, with illuminating case studies providing valuable context and practical insights. In conclusion, the review highlights the importance of exploring emerging approaches to mitigate biofilm formation in animals. It consolidates existing knowledge, highlights gaps in understanding, and encourages further research to address this critical facet of animal health. The comprehensive perspective provided by this review serves as a foundation for future investigations and interventions to improve the management of biofilm-associated infections in diverse animal populations.

The mechanical forces experienced during movement and the time constants of muscle activation are important determinants of the durations of behaviours, which may both be affected by size-dependent scaling. The mechanics of slow movements in small animals are dominated by elastic forces and are thus quasistatic (i.e. always near mechanical equilibrium). Muscular forces producing movement and elastic forces resisting movement should scale identically (proportional to mass2/3), leaving the scaling of the time constant of muscle activation to play a critical role in determining behavioural duration. We tested this hypothesis by measuring the duration of feeding behaviours in the marine mollusc Aplysia californica whose body sizes spanned three orders of magnitude. The duration of muscle activation was determined by measuring the time it took for muscles to produce maximum force as A. californica attempted to feed on tethered inedible seaweed, which provided an in vivo approximation of an isometric contraction. The timing of muscle activation scaled with mass0.3. The total duration of biting behaviours scaled identically, with mass0.3, indicating a lack of additional mechanical effects. The duration of swallowing behaviour, however, exhibited a shallower scaling of mass0.17. We suggest that this was due to the allometric growth of the anterior retractor muscle during development, as measured by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scans of buccal masses. Consequently, larger A. californica did not need to activate their muscles as fully to produce equivalent forces. These results indicate that muscle activation may be an important determinant of the scaling of behavioural durations in quasistatic systems.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the role of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) bacterial load in adults with pneumococcal meningitis. METHODS: We quantified bacterial load in CSF samples from the diagnostic lumbar puncture of adults with community-acquired pneumococcal meningitis. We also measured CSF concentrations of complement component 5a (C5a), and determined associations between bacterial load, clinical characteristics, C5a and unfavourable outcome (Glasgow Outcome Scale score <5). RESULTS: Bacterial load was quantified in 152 CSF samples. Median age of these patients was 61 years (interquartile range [IQR] 51-68), and 69 of 152 (45%) were female. Median CSF bacterial load was 1.6 × 104 DNA copies/mL (IQR 3.4 × 103-1.2 × 105), and did not correlate with CSF white cell count nor with CSF protein concentrations. Median CSF C5a concentration was 35.8 mg/L (IQR 15.9-105.6), and was moderately correlated with CSF bacterial loads (Spearman's rho = 0.42; p < 0001). High bacterial loads were associated with development of complications, such as circulatory shock (OR per logarithmic increase: 2.4, 95% CI: 2.0-2.9; p < 0.001) and cerebrovascular complications [OR: 1.9, 95% CI: 1.6-2.3; p < 0.001]). High bacterial loads were also associated with unfavourable outcome (OR: 2.8, 95% CI: 2.4-3.3; p < 0.001) and death (OR: 3.1, 95% CI: 2.6-3.8; p < 0.001). In a multivariable regression model including age, immunocompromised state, extrameningeal infection focus, admission Glasgow Coma Scale score and CSF C5a concentration, CSF bacterial load remained an independent predictor of unfavourable outcome (adjusted OR: 2.5, 95% CI: 1.6-3.9; p < 0.001). DISCUSSION: High CSF bacterial load predicts the development of complications and unfavourable outcome in adults with pneumococcal meningitis.

Methicillin-resistant (MR) Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and others, except for Staphylococcus aureus (SOSA), are common in healthcare-associated infections. SOSA encompass largely coagulase-negative staphylococci, including coagulase-positive staphylococcal species. Biofilm formation is encoded by the icaADBC operon and is involved in virulence. mecA encodes an additional penicillin-binding protein (PBP), PBP2a, that avoids the arrival of ß-lactams at the target, found in the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec). This work aims to detect mecA, the bap gene, the icaADBC operon, and types of SCCmec associated to biofilm in MRSA and SOSA strains. A total of 46% (37/80) of the strains were S. aureus, 44% (35/80) S. epidermidis, 5% (4/80) S. haemolyticus, 2.5% (2/80) S. hominis, 1.25% (1/80) S. intermedius, and 1.25% (1/80) S. saprophyticus. A total of 85% were MR, of which 95.5% showed mecA and 86.7% ß-lactamase producers; thus, Staphylococcus may have more than one resistance mechanism. Healthcare-associated infection strains codified type I-III genes of SCCmec; types IV and V were associated to community-acquired strains (CA). Type II prevailed in MRSA mecA strains and type II and III in MRSOSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococci other than Staphylococcus aureus). The operon icaADBC was found in 24% of SA and 14% of SOSA; probably the arrangement of the operon, fork formation, and mutations influenced the variation. Methicillin resistance was mainly mediated by the mecA gene; however, there may be other mechanisms that also participate, since biofilm production is related to genes of the icaADBC operon and methicillin resistance was not associated with biofilm production. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen surveillance to prevent the spread of these outbreaks both in the nosocomial environment and in the community.

Pain control after deep brain stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains unclear. Following six months, subthalamic (STN)-DBS reduced sensory complaints related to parkinsonism and bodily discomfort, increasing central beta-endorphin level. Pallidal GPi-DBS decreased bodily discomfort and beta-endorphin levels. Unexplained pain by other conditions and bodily discomfort were negatively correlated with beta-endorphin levels. Thus, DBS regulates central opioids, and prioritizing STN is important for PD patients with significant sensory complications.

BACKGROUND: Older people are the fastest-growing age group, with the highest risk of cognitive impairment. This study assessed the prevalence and associated factors with cognitive impairment in community-dwelling older people. METHODS: Older people were interviewed and accomplished through sociodemographic and health questionnaires. The quantitative variables were described by mean and standard deviation or median and interquartile range. The significance level adopted was 5 % (p < 0.05). The association between the quantitative variables was evaluated using the Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficients. RESULTS: The research population comprised 165 long-lived adults aged ≥80. The youngest one was 80, and the oldest one was 94 years old. The participants were 84.8 ± 3.6 years old, female (63 %) with a mean of education of 2.9 ± 1.8 years. A poor performance in the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was found in 58 (35.2 %) individuals when adjusted for educational level. After adjustment for confounding factors, body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.09), total older adults' income (up to 1 minimum wage [mw], p = 0.023; over 1 to 2 mw, p = 0.023), functional disability (Moderate dependence 75 %, p = 0.038; Moderate dependence 50 %, p = 0.081; Moderate dependence 25 %, p = 0.054), and the anxiety scale (p = 0.032), remained associated with cognitive impairment. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that BMI, total older adults' income, functional disability, and anxiety are related to cognitive impairment in long-lived adults. This study has some limitations, such as the fact that it is a cross-sectional study, the reduced number of individuals, and the fact that there were no comparisons among different ages and populations.

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this present paper was to evaluate the results and outcomes of patients with acute limb ischemia (ALI) submitted to pharmacomechanical thrombectomy (PMT) endovascular surgery with Angiojet, regarding the number of cycles/pumps. METHODS: Prospective, consecutive cohort study of ALI patients submitted to PMT endovascular intervention subdivided into two groups according to the number of cycles in the Angiojet technique: Group 1 higher than 150 cycles/second and Group 2 lesser than 150 cycles/second (cycles/s). RESULTS: Overall, 92 patients with ALI submitted to PMT were evaluated. Two groups of patients were identified: Group 1 higher than 150 cycles/s with 60 patients and Group 2 lesser than 150 cycles/s with 32 patients. The overall mortality rate (OMR) was 15.1% (13 patients) in total cohort within the first 30 days. Group 1 had a higher OMR than Group 2 (16.1% vs 9.3%, p = 0.007). There were 4 cases of hematuria (4.3%), all of them in Group 1. We have performed a Kaplan-Meier regarding limb salvage rates: Group 1 had 85% and Group 2 had 95.7% at 1057 days. P = 0.081. Among the factors evaluated, the following were related to overall mortality rate: PMT with higher >150 cycles/s (HR = 7.17, p = 0.007, CI: 1.38-8.89), COVID-19 infection (HR = 2.75, p = 0.010, CI = 1.73-5.97), and post-operative acute kidney injury (HR = 2.97, p < 0.001, CI = 1.32-8.13). Among the factors evaluated, the following was related to limb loss: post-operative acute kidney injury (HR = 4.41, p = 0.036, CI: 1.771-7.132), probably because patients experiencing limb loss have a higher incidence of acute renal insufficiency due to higher circulating myoglobin higher hemolysis from the increased Angiojet cycles inducing rhabdomyolysis. CONCLUSION: PMT with Angiojet is a safe and effective therapy in patients with ALI. However, patients receiving greater than 150 cycles/s were noted to have higher rates of acute kidney injury and mortality. This is likely reflective of increased thrombus burden and higher rates of hemolysis. Acute kidney injury, greater than 150 cycles/s, and COVID-19 infection were the variables with the strongest association to perioperative mortality.

Gastric squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a rare and puzzling entity that challenges conventional paradigms of gastric malignancies, especially in young adults. This case report presents a 22-year-old male with invasive SCC of the stomach, emphasizing the rarity of such occurrences and their diagnostic challenges. The literature review underscores the scarcity of information on gastric SCC, necessitating a critical examination of its clinical implications, etiological factors, and optimal management. The patient's complex medical history, diagnostic journey, and treatment course are detailed, highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration and advanced diagnostic techniques. Immunohistochemistry is a crucial tool for precise tumor characterization, and the absence of established risk factors emphasizes the enigmatic nature of gastric SCC. This case report contributes to the understanding of gastric SCC, prompting further research into its unique features, etiology, and therapeutic strategies in the context of gastric cancer.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an emerging therapy for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Although adverse effects have been reported in early-phase and a few randomized clinical trials, little is known about its overall safety profile, which has been assumed to be similar to that of DBS for movement disorders. The objective of this study was to pool existing safety data on DBS for TRD. Following PRISMA guidelines, PubMed was searched for English articles describing adverse outcomes after DBS for TRD. Studies were included if they reported at least 5 patients with a minimal follow-up of 6 months. After abstract (n = 607) and full-article review (n = 127), 28 articles reporting on 353 patients met criteria for final inclusion. Follow-up of the studies retrieved ranged from 12 to 96 months. Hemorrhages occurred in 0.8% of patients and infections in 10.2%. The rate of completed suicide was 2.5%. Development or worsening of depressive symptoms, anxiety, and mania occurred in 18.4%, 9.1%, and 5.1%, respectively. There were some differences between targets, but between-study heterogeneity precluded statistical comparisons. In conclusion, DBS for TRD is associated with surgical and psychiatric adverse events. Hemorrhage and infection occur at rates within an accepted range for other DBS applications. The risk of suicide after DBS for TRD is 2.5% but may not represent a significant deviation from the natural history of TRD. Finally, risks of worsening depression, anxiety, and the incidence of mania should be acknowledged when considering DBS for TRD.

AIM: To describe current home participation (frequency, involvement) and caregiver's desire for change in home participation of children and adolescents with Down syndrome, as well as home environmental factors, and to explore the associations of personal and environmental factors with current participation and caregiver's desire for change. METHOD: Eighty-two caregivers (mean age = 45 years 10 months) of children and adolescents with Down syndrome (mean age = 10 years 7 months) were surveyed about the child's home participation and environmental factors using the Participation and Environment Measure-Children and Youth. Furthermore, children's personal and environmental factors were collected. Results are reported using descriptive analysis and correlations (Spearman's rank correlation coefficients and Mann-Whitney U test) to describe the relationship between current participation and caregiver's desire for change, with personal and environmental factors as ordinal and nominal variables respectively (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Children's participation was highest with regard to personal care management and lowest with regard to school-related activities. Most caregivers desired change in homework and household chores. Greater frequency was associated with male sex, caregiver less rigorous social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and children receiving therapies. Greater involvement was associated with younger age in children and higher environmental support. Older age in children was associated with caregiver's greater desire for change. INTERPRETATION: Personal and environmental factors correlated with participation in specific ways. Creative strategies to promote participation that consider caregiver's wishes should be undertaken.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric causes are classified as direct (complications of pregnancy, childbirth or the puerperium) or indirect (caused by pregnancy but not directly caused by it). This study aimed to analyze maternal mortality from obstetric causes in Brazil from 2011 to 2021. METHODS: This was an ecological study on mortality and live births. The outcomes were the specific risk of mortality from direct and indirect cause adjustment and death during pregnancy and the puerperium. Binary and multiple linear logistic regressions were used to assess the influence of sociodemographic factors and maternal and child health indicators on maternal mortality and time of death (pregnancy and puerperium). RESULTS: Regarding mortality during pregnancy and during the puerperium, increased (p = 0.003) and decreased (p = 0.004) mortality over the years, respectively; residing in the northern region was associated with lower (p < 0.05) and greater (p = 0.035) odds; and the Maternal Mortality Committee was the primary and least active source of investigation, respectively (p < 0.0001). The number of deaths from indirect causes increased with age (p < 0.001) and in the northern region (p = 0.011) and decreased in the white (< 0.05) and stable union (0.002) regions. Specifically, for mortality risk, the age group [women aged 15-19 years presented an increase in cesarean section (p < 0.001) was greater than that of women who had < 4 antenatal visits (p < 0.001)], education [women who completed high school (8 to 11 years) was greater when they had < 4 prenatal visits (p = 0.018)], and marital status [unmarried women had more than 4 antenatal visits (p < 0.001); cesarean birth (p = 0.010) and < 4 antenatal visits (p = 0.009) were predictors of marriage; and women in a stable union who had < 4 prenatal visits and live births to teenage mothers (p < 0.001) were predictors]. Women who had no education (p = 0.003), were divorced (p = 0.036), had cesarean deliveries (p < 0.012), or lived in the north or northeast (p < 0.008) had higher indirect specific mortality risk. CONCLUSIONS: Sociodemographic factors and maternal and child health indicators were related to different patterns of obstetric mortality. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the environmental factors of children and adolescents with Cerebral Palsy (CP) in the state of Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study involving 164 caregivers of children/adolescents with CP, aged 1-14 years. The Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and the Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) were used to classify the participants' functioning, and environmental factors were evaluated by an on-line questionnaire that examined products and technologies, physical environment, services, and systems. A descriptive analysis was performed using percentage and frequency. RESULTS: Most participants had bilateral CP (66.9%) and 45% of them were spastic. Levels II and V of the GMFCS and MACS were the most frequent. About half (49.4%) used anticonvulsants, 27.4% underwent botulinum toxin application, and 29% went through orthopedic surgery in the lower limbs. Among the participants, 71.3% used orthoses in the lower limbs, and 51.8% used the public health care system. Most had access to physiotherapy (91.5%), but found difficulties to access interventions with other professionals, such as psychologists (28%) and nutritionists (37.8%). The school was the most frequently adapted environment (78%), and had the highest level of structural adaptation (42.7%). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that the barriers to access health services and barriers to the physical environment may impact participation and social inclusion.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Moringa oleifera Lam. (M. oleifera) is a tree species of Indian origin popularly known as the "tree of life". In various cultures, it is used by pregnant women to increase milk production, yet studies on its effects during pregnancy and lactation are lacking. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the nutraceutical aspects of flours produced from the leaves and seeds of M. oleifera, and to evaluate the effect of supplementation of pregnant Wistar rats during the gestation and lactation period, with the aim of studying the weight gain and neonatal parameters of the pregnant rats, as well as effects on the neurobehavioral development and memory in their offspring. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The flour supplementation was conducted at a concentration of 100 mg per kg of animal body weight. For the memory tests, the Open Field Habituation test was performed and repeated after seven days. The Object Recognition test was conducted with the animal exposed to the open field in short and long familiarization sessions. The data obtained were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis tests for non-parametric data and one-way and two-way ANOVA for parametric data. RESULTS: Flour produced from both the leaf and seed of M. oleifera was found to contain significant amounts of nutrients (protein, fibre, carbohydrates, etc.), making them suitable for supplementation. The exposure of pregnant rats to M. oleifera leaf and seed flours did not affect weight gain, did not have harmful effects on the birth of offspring, and did not result in abortions or mutations in the offspring. Regarding the supplemented group's offspring, early maturation of the senses in the offspring compared to the control group was observed in all tests were conducted; indicating that supplementation positively impacted cognitive development. Further, the offspring of the supplemented rats presented reduced locomotion and greater exploration of new objects compared to the control group offspring, indicating positive effects on learning. CONCLUSION: This study describes for the first time the beneficial effects on pregnant Wistar rats and their offspring of maternal supplementation with flour products from the leaves and seeds of M. oleifera.

PURPOSE: To explore the feasibility of an intervention using modified ride-on cars in terms of acceptability and potential changes in goal attainment, mobility, social function, and participation of children with Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A pre- and post-intervention feasibility study was conducted with children with CZS, levels IV and V of the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). The intervention consisted of 12 weeks of training (3 times a week for 40 min per session) and 4 weeks of follow-up. The primary outcomes included adherence, satisfaction, and learning in mobility. Secondary outcomes encompassed goal attainment, mobility, social/cognitive function, and participation. Descriptive statistics were performed. To explore potential individual changes with the intervention, Wilcoxon test was used to analyze Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory - Computer Adaptive Test (PEDI-CAT) data and Young Children's Participation and Environment Measure (YC-PEM)/Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth (PEM-CY), along with standard error measurements of the PEDI-CAT domains. RESULTS: Four children participated (median age 4.75 years; two females: three at level V on the GMFCS). Adherence was 75% of the total intervention time, and family members reported being satisfied or very satisfied. Children showed gains in learning the use of the modified ride-on cars and an increase in goal attainment after the intervention. Individual changes were observed in the PEDI-CAT domains (mobility and social/cognitive), but there were no significant changes in participation outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Children with CZS at GMFCS levels IV and V can learn to use motorized ride-on cars, attainment goals, and experience satisfaction.


Motorized mobility for children with Congenital Zika Syndrome and severe physical and cognitive disabilities is feasible and can encourage future interventions focused on activities and participation.This research contributes to the understanding of the potential changes that motorized mobility can have on goal attainment, satisfaction, and learning.Motorized mobility can be a means to enable children with Congenital Zika Syndrome to have opportunities for participation and guarantee their rights.

RESUMO

Early and accurate diagnoses of pathogenic microorganisms is essential to correctly identify diseases, treating infections, and tracking disease outbreaks associated with microbial infections, to develop precautionary measures that allow a fast and effective response in epidemics and pandemics, thus improving public health. Aptamers are a class of synthetic nucleic acid molecules with the potential to be used for medical purposes, since they can be directed towards any target molecule. Currently, the use of aptamers has increased because they are a useful tool in the detection of specific targets. We present a brief review of the use of aptamers to detect and identify bacteria or even some toxins with clinical importance. This work describes the advances in the technology of aptamers, with the purpose of providing knowledge to develop new aptamers for diagnoses and treatment of different diseases caused by infectious microorganisms.
