RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity, is often part of interventions targeting childhood overweight and obesity. However, to properly inform the objectives of the intervention, reliable psychometric measures are needed to better understand children's and their families necessities and characteristics. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Physical Activity Parenting Practices questionnaire in a community sample of Portuguese parents of children aged 5-10, assess measurement invariance across children's weight status, and construct validity. METHODS: Five hundred three parents completed the Portuguese version of the Physical Activity Parenting Practices (PAPP) questionnaire, a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire, and the Lifestyle Behavior Checklist. A subsample (n = 125) completed the PAPP questionnaire 1 month later. Data analyses were performed using R's lavaan (version 0.6-12) and psych (version 2.2.9) packages. RESULTS: Confirmatory factor analyses revealed good psychometric properties for the PAPP's single-factor Encouragement scale and the three-factor Discouragement scale. Configural, metric, and scalar invariance were found across parents of children with different weight statuses for both scales' factor structures. Internal reliability ranged from α = .64 to α = .89, and test-retest reliability ranged from r = .57 to r = .74. CONCLUSIONS: The constructs evaluated by PAPP questionnaire revealed adequate validity. The Portuguese version of the PAPP questionnaire is a reliable measure to assess relevant physical activity parenting practices, capable of differentiating the practices of parents with children of different weight statuses, and useful for both research and intervention purposes.

RESUMO

Supporting parents through the delivery of evidence-based parenting interventions (EBPI) is a way of promoting children's rights, given the known benefits to child development and family wellbeing. Group Triple P (GTP) is an EBPI suitable for parents of children aged 2-12 years, who experience parenting difficulties, and/or child behavior problems. Even though GTP has been intensively studied, information lacks on the magnitude of its effects, considering the risk of bias within and across prior research. To address this, a systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registration CRD42019085360) to evaluate the effects of GTP on child and parent outcomes at short- and longer-term was performed. Through a systematic search of a set of databases, 737 research papers were identified, and 11 trials were selected. The risk of bias within and across studies was evaluated. Significant positive effects of GTP were found immediately after the intervention for child behavior problems, dysfunctional parenting practices, parenting sense of competence, psychological adjustment, parental stress levels, conflict, and relationship quality. Six months after the intervention, positive effects were found only for child behavior problems. Data suggest that GTP might be an effective EBPI leading to positive family outcomes. Substantial risk of bias was found, highlighting the importance of improving the quality of research.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the use of information and communication technology (ICT) to deliver parenting and mental health support services to families. This narrative review illustrates the diverse ways in which ICT is being used across Europe to provide family support to different populations. We distinguish between the use of ICT in professional-led and peer-led support and provide implementation examples from across Europe. We discuss the potential advantages and disadvantages of different ways of using ICT in family support and the main developments and challenges for the field more generally, guiding decision-making as to how to use ICT in family support, as well as critical reflections and future research on its merit.

RESUMO

Health literacy can be understood as the set of cognitive and social skills that determine individuals' motivation and ability to make judgments and make decisions about health care, disease prevention, and health promotion. Therapeutic adherence may be related to a set of behaviors that coincide with the prescribed therapeutic regimen. The different capabilities of individuals to use and process health information, as well as to adhere to the proposed therapy, are of special importance in relation to chronic diseases, such as chronic kidney disease. Taking into account the relationship of this triad of concepts, it was important to know the level of literacy and therapeutic adherence in chronic kidney patients in a regular hemodialysis program. The methodology used followed a quantitative paradigm, in a cross-sectional descriptive correlational study. The sample consisted of 100 chronic kidney patients in a regular hemodialysis program at a clinic in the northern region of Portugal. The interview was used to gather information. The results obtained evidenced the existence of low levels of health literacy in 69% of the individuals that correlated with age and level of schooling. Regarding therapeutic adherence, the majority of the sample adhered to the therapy (78%), showing no relation between this and health literacy. As this is a national problem and leads to a deficiency in the sustainability of the health economy and the quality of life of our population, it is considered fundamental to provide the patient with the skills to deal with their health-disease process

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE:: To evaluate professional achievement and factors associated with occupational burnout among health professionals. METHODS:: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 436 healthcare providers, consisting of 101 nurses, 81 doctors and 254 nursing technicians, all meeting pre-established inclusion criteria. Occupational burnout was detected using the Maslach occupational burnout inventory tool. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaires comprising questions concerning socio-demographics, education and training, and the Maslach occupational burnout inventory was used to identify levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and professional achievement. RESULTS:: Emotional exhaustion was associated with education level and work place for nursing technicians. Depersonalization was associated with gender in nursing technicians. For nurses, depersonalization showed a significant association with education level, whereas this factor was associated with number of jobs for doctors. Lower levels of professional achievement were observed for unspecialized doctors compared to those with further training. Higher levels of professional achievement were associated with professionals with postgraduate training compared to those without. CONCLUSIONS:: High levels of emotional exhaustion were found in professionals from the maternity unit as well as in professionals with lower educational levels. Depersonalization was higher in physicians with several jobs and in female nurses. Low professional achievement was found in unspecialized doctors, while high professional achievement was associated with postgraduate training.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the relationship between levels of physical activity, fatigue and quality of life (QOL) in women diagnosed with breast cancer. METHODS: 215 women between the ages of 40 and 65 years were recruited at a cancer clinic. Physical activity levels were assessed by using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), fatigue levels by using the revised Piper scale, and QOL by means of EORTC QLQ-C30 and WHOQOL-Bref. Statistical analysis was performed using Minitab statistical software, version 16. RESULTS: the mean age of subjects was 52.66 years (SD=8.6); patients were mostly white (58.14%) and overweight (55.81%). Most women were fatigued (72.09%) while physically active women showed lower symptoms of fatigue (p<0.001). Mean scores for QOL were significantly lower among fatigued women (p<0.001). More active women scored higher on all scales of QOL (EORTC), especially for functional capacity (p<0.001), compared with the sedentary patients. A significant association was found between level of physical activity and overall QOL (WHOQOL-Bref) for all domains (p<0.001). Climacteric symptoms ranged from mild to strong and did not show any statistically significant results; however, the most active women had the fewest symptoms. CONCLUSION: physical activity appears to positively influence fatigue and QOL in women diagnosed with breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between physical activity level and sexual function in middle-aged women. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with a sample of 370 middle-aged women (40-65 years old), treated at public health care facilities in a Brazilian city. A questionnaire was used containing enquiries on sociodemographic, clinical and behavioral characteristics: the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), short form, and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). RESULTS: The average age of the women studied was 49.8 years (± 8.1), 67% of whom exhibited sexual dysfunction (FSFI ≤ 26.55). Sedentary women had a higher prevalence (78.9%) of sexual dysfunction when compared to active (57.6%) and moderately active (66.7%) females (p = 0.002). Physically active women obtained higher score in all FSFI domains (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain) and total FSFI score (20.9), indicating better sexual function than their moderately active (18.8) and sedentary (15.6) counterparts (p <0.05). CONCLUSION: Physical activity appears to influence sexual function positively in middle-aged women.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the determinants of sexual dysfunction among middle-aged women. METHODS: In a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study of middle-aged women (aged 40-65 years) attending a public healthcare facility in Natal, Brazil, data on sociodemographic, clinical, and behavioral characteristics were collected between May and October 2011. The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), Blatt-Kupperman Menopausal Index (BKMI), International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and WHO quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-Bref) were used to collect data, which were analyzed by relative frequency and percentage of variables, followed by Pearson χ(2) test and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Among 370 study participants, 67% exhibited sexual dysfunction (FSFI ≤ 26.55). Women who were in the oldest age group (56-65 years) (P<0.001), were divorced or separated (P<0.001), were sedentary (P=0.006), had undergone a hysterectomy (P=0.016), had strong climacteric symptoms (P<0.001), or had low quality of life (P<0.001) had a significantly higher incidence of sexual dysfunction. Logistic regression showed that the eldest group of women (55-65 years) (95% CI, 3.4-15.7; P<0.001), with the strongest climacteric manifestations (95% CI, 3.4-15.7; P<0.001) and lowest quality of life (95% CI, 3.2-13.8; P<0.001), were most likely to develop sexual dysfunction. CONCLUSION: Sexual dysfunction was found to be substantially influenced by sociodemographic, biologic, and behavioral variables.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of climacteric symptoms on the sexual function in middle-aged women. METHODS: A cross-sectional population study was conducted on a sample of 370 middle-aged women, aged 40 to 65 years-old, cared for at the Basic Health Units in Natal, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. We used a questionnaire containing questions on sociodemographic, clinical, and behavioral characteristics. Sexual function was evaluated by the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), while the menopause symptoms by the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). RESULTS: In the studied group, 67% of the women reported risk for sexual dysfunction (FSFI≤26.5). All FSFI domains (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain) were lower in women with risk for sexual dysfunction (p<0.001). The arousal, orgasm, and pain domains were most likely to contribute to lower FSFI scores. All somatovegetative, urogenital, and psychological MRS symptoms were more elevated in women with risk for sexual dysfunction, being significant for all comparisons (p<0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that the likelihood of women with risks of sexual dysfunction to present hot flushes, depression, sexual problems, and vaginal dryness was, respectively, 2.1 (95%CI 1.2 - 3.5); 2.4 (95%CI 1.5 - 4.1); 2.3 (95%CI 1.4 - 3.8), and 2.2 (95%CI 1.3 - 3.6) times higher, respectively, compared to those without any risk. CONCLUSION: Climacteric symptoms seem to influence the sexual function in middle-aged women.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of physical activity on climacteric symptoms among middle-aged women in Brazil. METHODS: A population-based sample of women aged 40-65 years was recruited from Natal, Brazil. Enrollment took place in basic health units in each health district of the city from June to September 2011. Data were collected while women waited for routine appointments at the health units. Climacteric symptoms were assessed using the Menopause Rating Scale and the Blatt-Kupperman Menopausal Index. The level of physical activity was assessed via the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. It was classified as low, moderate, or vigorous. RESULTS: The mean age of the 370 participants was 49.8 ± 8.1 years. They were predominantly white (72.7%), married (61.6%), non-smokers (93.5%), and had undergone high-school education (70.5%). All domains of climacteric symptoms were significantly affected by physical activity: psychological (P<0.001); somatovegetative (P<0.001); and urogenital (P=0.008). Significant differences were found between the IPAQ groups of physical activity and the Blatt-Kupperman Menopausal Index for the following symptoms: hot flashes (P<0.001); paresthesia (P=0.022); insomnia (P<0.001); impatience (P<0.001); depression (P<0.001); vertigo (P<0.001); fatigue (P<0.001); arthralgia/myalgia (P<0.001); and palpitation (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Physical activity improved climacteric symptoms among middle-aged women in Brazil.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of physical activity on the quality of life of middle-aged women. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 370 women aged 40 to 65 years-old recruited from a population-based sample. Enrollment took place in Basic Health Units in each health district of the city (North, South, East, and West) from June to September 2011. According to the Municipal Health Department of the City, 20,801 women were assisted at the Basic Health Units during a one-year period. The sample size calculation was stratified by district and based on a 95 percent confidence level with a power of 80 percent, as well as an error estimate of 5 percent and it was considered proportional to the number of patients classified as having adequate quality of life (indicator >26) in the general population. Data were collected while women waited for their routine appointment at the Health Unit. WHOQOL-Bref was used to evaluate the quality of life, and menopause rating scale (MRS) was used to determine climacteric symptoms. The level of physical activity was assessed by means of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). To obtain the classification of PA levels, we used three categories: sedentary, moderately active, and very active. Statistical analysis was performed using the Minitab software, version 16. RESULTS: The mean age of the subjects was 49.8 years-old (±8.1) and they were predominantly Caucasian (72.7 percent), married (61.6 percent), non-smokers (93.5 percent), and had High School education (47.8 percent). Using the WHOQOL, mean scores were found to be significantly different between the groups (low, moderate, and vigorous physical activity), classified according to the domains of quality of life (p<0.01). Concerning physical activity and climacteric symptoms, significant differences were found for all domains: psychological (p<0.01), vegetative-somatic (p<0.01), and urogenital (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Physical activity improves quality of life in middle-aged women.

RESUMO

The aging process is a universal, multi-factorial and unavoidable process. Physical activity is considered an important factor in the prevention of diseases caused by aging. The authors propose a review on the theme, evaluating the beneficial effects of physical activity and the risks of oxidative stress in menopausal women. Nowadays, is known that regular physical activity associated to antioxidant supplement is one of the most effective strategies to prevent cardiovascular disease, neoplasia, and chronic illnesses specific to old age. The authors concluded: the greatest benefits associated with physical activity are attained through moderation, since excessive exercise can bring about oxidative stress and diseases related to the latter, including death.

RESUMO

A requirement of many surface science studies is the capability to alter a sample temperature in a controlled mode. Sample preparation procedures such as heating or cooling ramps, high temperature spikes, fast annealing, or simply maintaining a sample at a very high, or very low, temperature are common. To address these issues, we describe the design and the construction of a multipurpose sample holder. Key points of this design are operation in an extended temperature range from liquid nitrogen (LN(2)) temperature to approximately 1300 K, temperature control during heating and cooling, low thermal inertia with rates up to 50 K s(-1) (heating) and -20 K s(-1) (cooling), and small heated volume to minimize background problems in thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) spectra. With this design the sample can be flash heated from LN(2) temperature to 1300 K and cooled down again in less than 100 s. This sample holder was mounted and tested in a multitechnique apparatus and adds a large number of sample preparation procedures as well as TDS to the list of already available surface analysis techniques.

RESUMO

The results of a detailed study of Li(+) neutralization in scattering on Ag and Au clusters and thin films supported on TiO(2) are presented. A very efficient neutralization is observed on small clusters with a decrease for the smallest clusters. These results closely follow the size-effects observed in the reactivity of these systems. The energy dependence of the neutralization was studied for the larger clusters (>4 nm) and observed to be similar in trend to the one observed on films and bulk (111) crystals. A general discussion of possible reasons of the enhancement in neutralization is presented and these changes are then tentatively discussed in terms of progressive modifications in the electronic structure of clusters as a function of reduction in size and as it evolves from metallic-like to discretised states. The highest neutralization efficiency would appear to correspond to clusters sizes for which a metal to nonmetal transition occurs. The relative position of the Li level and the highest occupied molecular orbital in the molecular cluster can be expected to strongly affect the electron transfer processes, which in this case should be described in a molecular framework.
