RESUMO

The increasing use of pesticides has caused global concerns about the toxic effects and adverse consequences of pesticides on humans and the environment. Among the ways to understand the impact of pesticides, the Allium cepa bioassay stands out. This test is suitable to evaluate different toxic, cytotoxic, genotoxic, and mutagenic outcomes. In this context, the present review aimed to summarize the history of using the A. cepa bioassay to investigate pesticide damages. Data on the experimental conditions were also discussed. The reviewed studies showed the toxicity profile of 113 active ingredients primarily tested in the laboratory, using water for exposure. The most used biomarkers were the mitotic index, chromosomal aberrations, and nuclear abnormalities. All active ingredients caused some toxicity levels in A. cepa, showing the efficiency and sensibility of this bioindicator and the adverse effect of pesticides on humans and the environment. Furthermore, it was evident that pesticides have great potential to damage the mitotic spindle and DNA because almost all active ingredients tested induced chromosomal aberrations and nuclear abnormalities. The current review showed that the A. cepa bioassay is an effective and appropriate model to evaluate pesticide toxicity, and it might indicate research gaps and recommendations for further studies.

RESUMO

As part of the most used herbicides, glyphosate is the most successful ingredient of agrochemical companies. The main objective of this study was to demonstrate research trends related to the glyphosate toxicity and its main effects on human and environmental health. For this purpose, 443 articles published, from 1995 to 2020, on the platform Web of Science™ Thomson Reuters were selected. The main toxicity results related in literature are genotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and endocrine disruption. The environmental effects come mostly from the contamination of groundwater and soils. Several studies have concluded that herbicide concentrations right below the official safety limits induced toxic effects. The results presented a highlighted harmful effect of glyphosate on both human and environmental health. It has been observed that countries where publish the most about the glyphosate toxicity are great investors in large-scale agriculture. It is important to ponder that these countries are in a route of ecosystem exploitation that includes not only fauna and flora, but also human beings. Unfortunately, science does not provide concise data for these pesticide disapproval in the global consumer market. It is necessary to search sustainable global interest alternatives to increase agriculture production based on peoples' food sovereignty.

RESUMO

Abstract: The multiple uses of aquatic ecosystems by humankind and the continuous interference of their activities have contributed to the emergence of potentially toxic cyanobacteria blooms. Here, we firstly created a database of occurrences of cyanobacteria blooms in Brazil through a systematic review of the scientific literature available in online platforms (e.g. Web of Science, Capes Thesis Catalogue). Secondly, we carried out ecological niche models with occurrence data obtained from these studies to predict climatically suitable areas for blooms. We select 21 bioclimatic variables input environmental data. We used five modeling methods for the current climate scenario: (1) Maxent; (2) Support Vector Machines; (3) Random Forest; (4) Maximum Likelihood e (5) Gaussian. We found that the number of publications about bloom events was higher in 2009 with a decline in the years 2012, 2013 and 2017. Furthermore, the years with the higher records of blooms in freshwater environments were 2005, 2011 e 2014. These events occurring mainly in public supply reservoirs and are mostly of the genera Microcystis Lemmermann, 1907, Dolichospermum (Ralfs ex Bornet & Flahault) P.Wacklin, L.Hoffmann & J.Komárek, 2009 and Raphidiopsis F.E.Fritsch & F.Rich, 1929. Modeling the potential distribution of blooms, we found sampling gaps that should be targeting for future researches, especially in the Amazon biome. Overall, the models did not predict highly suitable areas in the /north of Brazil, while other regions were relatively well distributed with a higher number of occurrence records in the Southeast region.

Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) has been widely used in the assessment and monitoring of aquatic environments. Local and regional factors can influence Chl-a concentrations; moreover, the connection between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems is a major paradigm within aquatic ecology. Here, we investigate the spatial distribution of Chl-a concentrations in a tropical savannah floodplain in Central Brazil using a broad spatial data set (a 900-km north-south transect; 30 lakes). We determine the relative importance of local environmental variables (limnological and morphometric) and regional (land use) and spatial distances (spatial eigenvector) on Chl-a concentrations using partial linear regression. We evaluate the direct and indirect effects of local and regional variables on Chl-a with a path analysis. Our results indicate spatially autocorrelated patterns wherein lakes in closer proximity showed more similar levels of Chl-a than more distant lakes. Local environmental factors explained most variance in Chl-a (R 2adj = 0.28; P = 0.02); more specifically, both lake area and total nitrogen significantly (P < 0.05) explained Chl-a concentrations (direct effects). Meanwhile, regional factors neither directly nor indirectly predicted Chl-a. Thus, internal processes, such as the resuspension of sediment (which is frequent in tropical floodplains), rather than external influences, were the main factors that explained Chl-a concentrations in this study. The importance of local variables in structuring Chl-a concentration may be used to guide the conservation of the aquatic ecosystems in these tropical floodplain lakes.
