RESUMO

A field survey in a transitional environment (lagoon of Venice, Italy) and a laboratory exposure experiment were carried out to validate the use of polychaetes, Perinereis rullieri, as indicators of PCB and PAH contaminants in the sediments. Results from the field study showed that PCBs, predominantly the hexa- and hepta-chlorinated biphenyls, were promptly bioaccumulated in the tissues of P. rullieri, whereas PAH levels were generally low and fluctuating among seasons. Organisms experimentally exposed to natural polluted sediments bioaccumulated all the examined PCB congeners, whereas those exposed to the reference sediments were able to reduce them, at least to some extent. A PAH depletion was always observed, although the time variations for the single compounds differed from each other. The biomarker malondialdehyde (MDA), evaluated both in native and in treated organisms, was helpful as a supporting parameter in elucidating their oxidative stress condition, although depending on numerous natural confounding factors.

RESUMO

This study examines whether plankton of the Lagoon of Venice could be considered as a bio-indicator of areas subjected to various anthropogenic influences. This study was a two year hydrochemical and biological survey in five areas of the Lagoon of Venice, each with different environmental conditions due to pollution from urban, industrial, thermal and agricultural wastes. Phytoplankton associations did not show any promising species. In the different lagoonal areas, this community was differentiated into its major groups. In contrast, the copepod Acartia tonsa Dana could be considered as a target species in highly eutrophic areas.

RESUMO

A number of rules, often considered as dogmas by some, made it possible for oral implants to achieve a high success rate. However, some of these concepts have been questioned. Indeed, the submerged fashion of implant placement, the arbitrary 3 to 6 months healing period, bicortical anchorage, placement of the longest possible implants, as well as implant placement in strict sterile conditions have been scientifically challenged. The aim of this article is thus to give a critical review of these concepts, in order to further simplify and rationalize oral implantology, putting this field in the reach of a bigger number of patients and practitioners. However, procedural simplification in oral implantology is not synonymous to poor patient preparation. On the contrary, an in-depth knowledge and experience in both the surgical and prosthetic aspects of oral implantology are of utmost importance in order to achieve a high success rate.

RESUMO

Proteus syndrome, a disorder which consists of skeletal, hamartomatous and other mesodermal malformations proves to be tremendously variable. Although most of the patients show deformities at birth, the diagnosis is usually made later in life as the phenotype develops over time. We report on the case of a fetus presenting in utero, with a cystic abdominal mass and malposition of the fingers, which was found to have additional features of Proteus syndrome after termination of pregnancy. This case demonstrates that severe cases of Proteus syndrome can be detected prenatally.

RESUMO

We report a case of hyperestrogenisation which showed itself by the presence of a haematocolpometra in an elderly lady which could be attributed to prolonged and continuous treatment with Promestriene cream. Haematocolpometra is due to intra-uterine haemorrhage (itself due to hyperplastic endometrial polyps) with vaginal stenosis caused by vaginal atrophy that existed before local treatment was started. The Pomestriene is an estrogenic substance which works locally and does not seem to cause much in the way of general effects when used for short courses. If when it is used in large doses over a prolonged period of time, however, it is necessary to look for generalised hyperestrogenisation. Further studies are needed to confirm these finding.
