RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: to update understanding of the effectiveness of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on motor dysfunction in Parkinson's disease, since the last review was published in 2016. METHODS: in order to identify suitable publications for inclusion, an online search of the Pubmed, Scopus and Cochrane databases was carried out. Searches of relevant full-text articles were performed through specific keywords. The final database check was performed in July 2019. Papers were restricted to studies investigating motor rehabilitative effects of tDCS in adult patients with Parkinson's disease. Studies involving either single or repeated tDCS sessions with a sham or controlled trial type design (which incorporated outcomes on motor performance measures) were considered. As studies varied widely in terms of methodology, a qualitative analysis of the selected studies was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale or the Delphi list (depending on the study design). RESULTS: twenty-nine studies were retained in this systematic review. Of the studies included, fifteen involved single tDCS session (patients = 256) and fourteen involved repeated tDCS sessions (patients = 294). Eight investigations of single tDCS and ten investigations of repeated tDCS demonstrated significant results. Studies involving multi- target stimulation demonstrated significant improvements on mobility (p=0.006), balance (by 50.9%), gait velocity (by 29%), fall reduction (p0.05) compared to mono-target stimulations. CONCLUSIONS: despite increasing evidence that tDCS may improve motor symptoms, the results showed that fully optimized tDCS protocols are not yet established.

RESUMO

The aim of this trial was to analyse the environmental impact of the rabbit production system, through a cradle to-slaughterhouse gate using a life cycle approach. Since in a rabbit farm the production efficiency depends on the feed conversion and quantity of meat produced, scenarios characterized by different slaughter weights and dissimilar level of mortality during the fattening phase were hypothesized. Climate change determined in the standard rabbit resulted in 3.86 kg CO2 eq/kg live weight, slightly higher than that of broilers and not different from that of pork. High and Low mortality scenarios resulted in impact changes from +5.22 and -2.31%, respectively, compared with the standard system. An increase of environmental impact values (up to 36%) was registered when live weight enhanced from 2.7 to 2.9 kg for standard and heavy rabbits. The results obtained underline the strict link between the ability to convert feed into meat and the environmental sustainability of meat production also in the rabbit system.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between alexithymia scores and biological markers of adherence in dialyzed patients. The hypothesis was that higher scores of alexithymia would be associated with lower adherence to treatment. METHODS: Fifty-four adult dialyzed patients were enrolled during a follow-up visit. Participants were asked to complete a self-report questionnaire, namely, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Moreover, biological markers levels of adherence to treatment (phosphorus, creatinine, and serum uric acid) were measured. RESULTS: A positive correlation was found between phosphorous levels and TAS-F2 (r = 0.28; P = .04) and TAS-F3 (r = -0.31; P = .02). Stepwise regression with TAS-F2 and TAS-F3 as predictors of adherence to treatment showed a significant model, adjusted R(2) = 0.08, F(1,52) = 5.4; P < .02, where only TAS-F3 was able to predict phosphorous levels (P = .02). CONCLUSIONS: Findings showed that external oriented thinking was able to predict a biological marker of adherence to treatment in dialyzed patients.

RESUMO

The current trial was carried out on a commercial poultry farm to study the effect of skim milk powder (SMP) added to a diet containing Lactobacillus acidophilus on performance and egg quality of laying hens from 20 to 49 wk of age. A total of 2,400 Hy-Line W-36 laying hens were housed in 600 unenriched cages (4 hens each) located over 4 tier levels. Animals were assigned to 1 of 3 experimental treatments (0, 3, and 4). The laying hens assigned to treatments 3 and 4 received a diet enriched respectively with 3 and 4% SMP, whereas the animals in treatment 0 were fed a diet without SMP. All diets, moreover, were supplemented with L. acidophilus D2/CSL. Hen performance was determined throughout the experimental period and egg quality was measured on 30 eggs per treatment every week. Results showed that productive performance in terms of egg production, egg weight, and feed conversion ratio was not influenced by SMP at 3 or 4% of the diet. Egg quality was significantly affected by SMP included at 3 or 4% of the diet. Eggs from treatments 3 and 4, in fact, displayed higher shell thickness than those from treatment 0 (P < 0.0001). Likewise, specific gravity, Haugh unit, and shell percentage were significantly affected by the addition of SMP. In conclusion, in our study, SMP added to a diet containing L. acidophilus had no significant effects on the productive parameters of hens during the laying period, whereas significant improvements were found in certain egg quality characteristics.

RESUMO

The influence of genetic origin on lipid content, lipolytic activities and fatty acid composition of rabbit leg meat and perirenal fat was studied and changes in free fatty acids and oxidative parameters during refrigerated storage evaluated. Three rabbits lines were used, line R selected for growth rate and lines V and A selected for litter size at weaning. Line R had higher fat contents and higher lipolytic activities in the meat of the hind leg than lines A and V. Differences between lines were found in the fatty acids of the meat and perirenal fat. Lower SFA and higher PUFA percentages were found in line A. Free fatty acids and oxidative parameters were little influenced by rabbit line. Animals were measured at the same stage of maturity, thus it can be considered that differences found between lines are genetic differences and not differences due to the degree of maturity.

RESUMO

A mini-tissue-equivalent proportional-counter (TEPC) has been constructed to study the possibility to manufacture mini-counters without field-shaping tubes for radiation therapy. The mini-TEPC can be assembled with and without field-shaping tubes. It can be equipped with a mini-alpha source for a precise lineal energy calibration. After the positive conclusions of this study, a slim TEPC has been designed and constructed. The slim TEPC has an external diameter of only 2.7 mm. It has been tested with therapeutic proton beams and gamma ray sources.

RESUMO

This paper illustrates a tissue-equivalent proportional counter designed to have high gas gain and good energy resolution at nanometric simulated site sizes. Microdosimetric neutron and gamma spectra were measured in dimethyl ether and in propane-based tissue-equivalent gas mixture down to 35 nm. The comparison of experimental data with the results of Monte Carlo calculations shows a satisfactory agreement.
